While visiting San Diego, you must take the time to visit Border Field State Park. Not only is it cool to say you have been to the furthest southwest corner of the USA, you can also see this beautiful beach that feels very “remote” despite being so close to a major metropolitan area. But the most important reason to visit is to experience the humanity of it all, realize Mexico is our friend and ally and just over that wall. It’s sad how militarized the wall is on our side - we can’t get anywhere near it while on the Mexico side they are enjoying life and walking right up to it. It really helps give you perspective!

Nice under used park with a decent beach, trails, and interesting views of the border wall. The parks currently only open on weekends to cars ($7), but you can park at the entrance and walk to the beach which is about a mile from the entrance. Usually it’s pretty empty including the beach. There is a big area for horse back riding. There’s even a place nearby which will take you out for a ride in the beach. It looked like a fun thing to do. Lots of law enforcement in the area including Border Guards, Sherries deputy’s, and Law enforce the Rangers. I found some of the navy’s trash (manuals) and phosphorus ordinance of some kind. They were a decent size being about a foot long and about 8” around. I thought it was strange that when I reported them to the lady (Ranger)at the entrance she was indifferent. Hopefully they aren’t dangerous.

I wouldn’t necessarily consider this a park per se but more of a hiking trail along the road that gives you views of the border and will lead you to the beach.

The most southwestern land in the continental United States. If you’re in San Diego, this short detour is worth it just for the experience. Details follow. This is a California State Park and costa around 7$ to enter. There are bathrooms, picnic tables, and areas to relax and look at the water. I don’t advise swimming here as the current is strong and there is runoff pollution from the nearby TJ river. Confirmed by border patrol. There are CBP agents patrolling here so it’s relatively safe. You can hear the music playing across the border wall and if you look, there are friendly faces looking back at you as they’re also looking into the United States as you look into Mexico! Worth the trip!

Definitely worth the time to check this place out. If you go during the week you can take a long beautiful walk from the main parking lot to the border fence at the beach. Very quit, and secluded. The beach is beautiful and the area is surprisingly very clean. Lots of Border Patrol agents, who are all very nice. You can also rent horses and ride along the sandy beach. Cool place to explore, and the new wall system separating the United States and Mexico is impressive.

Interesting border zone. Kinda eerie. Not many Americans around but the beach on the Mexico side looked busy. Not a very appealing prison like fence.

It was a fun, productive morning walk from the parking site to the actual border wall. The actual park is closed due to Covid (even on the weekends from 10-2) but it’s a spectacular view from there. There is a buffer and you cannot touch the fence. There is constant border patrol all around but it’s quite interesting to see the party and people on the Tijuana side. We had one border patrol agent come up to us and talk to us about the current situation and what usually goes on and it was the highlight of the walk. I would recommend coming down from San Diego if you have the chance.

The good: there was a path, flowers were in full bloom. The bad: the road way was flooded. The ugly: the ranger station was closed and once you get walking there is one bathroom at the beginning of the trail. Friendship park was closed.

This places is opened for foot traffic all week! But of you want to drive to the park, there is a small fee to bring your car and you can only do so on Friday-Sunday. The walk is not bad, maybe a mile and a half each way. Once we got there... just seeing the wall was impressive. The scenery of the beach was something else. The park is well maintained and bathrooms were clean. Next time I’d go on the weekend when cars are allowed to pass.

Really cool walking along the road that goes right up to the border wall. Currently some of the road/path is flooded due to recent rainfall so be advised and follow signage that indicates an alternative route to beach etc.

This place is such an amazing place to explore. The beach is clean and really quite secluded. If you go on the weekend you can drive up to Friendship Park or if you're hauling horses you can station right there at the horse corrals that are near the beach.

One of the few places in the west coast to catch a-frames, solo. It’s a cold water break, and wind can shut it down quick. Get there early. Worth it. State park is usually closed, ( floods, mud, quail crossing, u name it), but worth the hike. Can access by walking south of sea coast, ib, but along the journey u may find the sloughs. Which is a deep water break and can tower.

Cool trip to the border that isn't advertised anywhere in California. Stay away from the fence though.

Very cool place for tourists to visit. In fact, it is a tourist place cuz most of the cars in the lot had out-of-state license plates. Note that the road ends at some point, and you'd have to walk to the beach, and to the border.

Quite a touristic place. The trails South to the parking lot are prohibited unless you don't mind a little excitement like me. Border Patrol will stop you all of the time but gently ask you to keep moving because of motorcycle activity and patrolling. The 2 mile walk to the park is a must to enjoy the full experience. Like always when walking trails take some food and water and enjoy your stepping. 👍

Very humbling to see this area. The Tijuana side is vibrant and full of life. The American side is empty.

Quite hidden away from the rest of the city. Not well kept but still provides some very nice views of the beach and estuary. There were only a couple people beside me, which makes for a rare southern California beach experience.

One of the most underrated beaches in SoCali. Maybe it's due to the depressing wall that separates Cali & Mexico. Maybe its due to people feeling uncomfortable being watched by USA military helicopters roaming the sky to spot illegal citizens. In spite of the odds, if you look past those i guarantee that you'll enjoy the beach at this park. its very beautiful and pretty empty. Perfect place to get away from humanity to clear your thoughts. The houses and buildings across the broder looks nice. The wall becomes see thru as it touches the sandy beach where you can see peaceful mexicans having a good time. On the American, there are only a handful of people. I went on a Wednesday and there was nobody on the american side of the border. Through the odds, the beach is beautiful. If you come with a clear mind not thinking political, you'll enjoy it.

There is really not too much to this state park but I liked it. First time seeing the mexican border was something different to see. There is some dolphins every now and then, not too close to the shore. I found the park to be a little bit small for my liking specially since you are paying 7 dollars if you drive. Beach is quieter than the other side of imperial beach, the other side of the mexican border might not be.

Very quiet and nice to see the waters of the ocean. There are a lot of border patrols but they do not interact unless you get to close to the boarder. It was a good experience. The park was nice and clean. They also have a trail which is nice for bike rides and walks.

Beautiful and lots of trails. That’s you right to the beach and you can walk to the boarder. Found lots of shells on the beach. Peaceful beach, can’t swim though, sadly lots of trash and if it’s flooded lots of the trails are closed. Would be an awesome park if they’d clean it up! It’s terrible to see all the trash from when it floods.

Interesting area. Park west of Hollister St. along the nat'l border. Enviromentalists are doing great things here with the plastic trash from the ocean. Trails can be muddy and are certainly used by animals. Amazing to see Nasturtiums growing wild along the road.

I'm only writing this review to let people know you probably don't want to swim along this stretch of beach. The Tijuana River flows into the ocean nearby and has a lot of waste water and chemical run off from Mexico. You can smell it sometimes when you drive over the nearby bridge before you get into the park. I know they are trying to get a treatment plant to help with the smell but I still wouldn't want to swim.

Park here to walk to the border fence that's goes into the water, 6 rows of razor wire & a closed friendship park. Used to be nicer many years ago but most left overgrown n uninviting. Still see heaps of wet clothes in this area from folks who have crossed via ocean. They change into dry clothes n then move north into the system unseen.
