Well, the less I say about this place, the better. An utterly poor place to visit and far from the true reflection of a 'free society' that I would expect. The contrast is interesting too, went down a road filled with Copenhagen's finest urban drug dealers selling unregulated rubbish, with young tourist girls who could be no older than 12 being offered drugs. To top it all off, drunk men all over the place at 1pm on a Saturday, and the rundown nature of this park meant that I high tailed it out of there very, very quickly after getting pictures. Don't bother visiting, it's just a rundown slum at this point. A shame really after all of the amazing stories that I heard about this place over the years.

What an amazing place. Great people, interesting shops and restaurants and the best Christmas market in town. Was such a cool experience to see how the town works and to support such an incredible ethos.

A very interesting place to see especially if you read about the history of this place. I was there very early in the morning so Christiania was virtually empty. Shame the place is a bit run down, but the original concept of the community is still worth knowing about. Visit if you like graffiti, want to buy smth or simply enjoy the atmosphere of places like this.

it’s really interesting considering they are actually in the middle of the town. easy access via public transport. some very interesting and good graffiti as well as houses! worth a visit if you have time.

Colourful neighbourhood close to the city centre. Although it is known for drugs selling and there is a street where pictures are not allowed, the place is incredibly nice to walk through. There are beautiful murals and funky sculptures, and the houses are all full of personality. There are also cafes and restaurants. Recommended

This is a beautiful place if you are open minded, and believe in peace and unity. This place is like a country inside of a country. They are leaving by their own laws and rules, and one of the most important things is not to run inside of this place. It is not true that here you can smoke weed and bass on punished because it’s still not allowed, but is it easier here to get it? Yes definitely it is. During the daytime here you can find a lot of tourists coming to visit even guided groups, but at night time it turns out that this neighborhood becomes something like an open air stage with concerts and music shows. Unfortunately, in the past few years, this place has become violent but not by its residents but by visitors. In one part of the community it is not allowed to take photos so please do respect this. Entrance is free and it is well-connected with public transportation.

Maybe I got overhyped about the place, but it was something else from what I had imagined. It's rather small, and it's easy to stick out as a tourist here. Our guide warned us about possible police raids, and we might have seen one. If it was a raid though, it was the chillest one I've ever seen (not that I've seen many, or at all, but still): the police were chatting cheerfully with the vendors, and you wouldn't think they have only 20 minutes to search the place (according to the guide). Anyway, it was nice to take a stroll around there.

Nestled near the city center, a colorful neighborhood with a kaleidoscope of artistic expressions awaits. While its past may cast a shadow, venturing beyond the superficial reveals a vibrant tapestry of murals, sculptures, and quirky houses. Amidst the vibrant colors, cafes and restaurants offer respite, while the neighborhood's raw energy and artistic soul remain an intriguing destination.

Interesting place to visit with lots of vibrant graffiti and artwork. Felt very safe as tourists in most areas, pusher street had a less safe atmosphere and you cannot take pictures there but that was only one small area and you don’t have to go through it.

It is such an interesting place to visit. I loved the art! I think my only problem was that it just looked like a very dirty place in general, I saw many drunk people and didn’t feel the vibe that everybody kept talking about I would definitely like to go again during the summer time, maybe it will different.

On a weekend in Copenhagen, we had to go to Christiania. Main place is cool with activity and animation but streets are more full of dealers than authentic people. I would still recommend to go there just to see if you have time.

It is its own community so try to be respectful. They do not always allow photographs so always ask. The art in itself is beautiful and they have an interesting ideology. They also have an open hash market so if you are not comfortable do not enter Christiania.

Visiting Christiania was like stepping into a whole other universe right in the heart of Copenhagen. The vibe is all about self-governance and accountability, with no central government breathing down your neck. It's a fascinating experiment in human behavior, let me tell you. Topping it off, shops here are something else – unique, quirky, and full of character. And the graffiti and art? It's like an ever-evolving outdoor art gallery, each piece telling its own story. Christiania is a place where creativity and freedom intertwine, making it a must-see for anyone visiting Copenhagen.

It’s an interesting place and I would definitely pay a visit if you are in Copenhagen. But if you do go there definitely take cash with you if you want to buy anything there because there is no card payment. I found the people to be very nice and friendly and did not encounter any unwelcome behavior. Me and my friend walked around the whole Christiania and felt completely safe and comfortable within that environment.

Great place to explore and very different to the surrounding city. A fascinating example of community governance and organic urban development. Be mindful and respectful of the fact that people live and work in Christiania - it’s not a theme park!

Freetown Christiania sits in the borough of Christianshavn and, despite the controversy around it, is a beautiful place – a prime example of modern architecture without architects. It's one of Copenhagen worst kept secrets, since it's one of it's largest attractions. This is partly because it's something uniquely Danish that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. It's a place for diversity and acceptance.

I think is worth visiting and you should expect what it is in fact. I see a lot of reviews saying that the place is not that clean or even saying that the smell of weed was too much for them. But guys, that’s what you are supposed to find in Christiania 😅 so I don’t know what people are expecting… I really enjoyed the vibe of the place, because in every restaurant or shop that I’ve been, everyone was super welcoming and friendly. I also tried a potato toast and it was very nice, first time to eat potatoes on a toast lol. It’s easy to get there either cycling or by public transport and it’s not far from the city centre.

The whole area seemed to have a relaxed feeling, and also felt very safe and welcoming. Cards and cash were almost universally accepted for food and other non-weed products. Pusher street can feel a little intimidating as you approach, but also really good vibe, nobody was pushy or aggressive. Saw lots of different types of people, all ages and for all different reasons to visit.

It seems like a cool hangout for the young crowd. There's a nice area for skateboarders. Most of the vendors weren't open when I was there. Wonder what the vibe is like at night?

The Hop on Hop Off tour description was so enticing we jumped off at the nearest stop and headed to walk around Christiana. Between the geocaching app and the Adventure Lab app we did our own self guided walk around the village. We were guided to parts of Christiana that others may not find as easily but that’s the magic of a community led tour. After completing the Adventure Lab we found lunch and then headed towards the next stop on the Hop on Hop off your.

Interesting place to visit that has been a commune since 1971. Worth a visit to see what it's all about, but most likely whether you like or dislike this place will be based on your attitude towards what it is. Didn't spend much time here but it was fun to just walk through and see what it's about.

The history and idea behind this section of the city is interesting, and some of the murals and architecture are pleasing to the eye, but that's where it stops. The place is seedy and the bathrooms are gross at best. Overpriced and not really worth more than an hour's stroll. Don't believe the hype. Go to the beach instead. Visit one of the many beautiful parks.

I know that Christiana by many is considered a unique experience where people have pulled the plug and try to live a parallel to normal Danish society, which I to some extent understands and respect. I cannot however, tolerate a place where drugs are accepted so easily and distributed so openly right in front of you, like it is a widely accepted health mineral. For that alone, I think Christiania should be closed down, although I understand that the trade will just continue in other parts of Copenhagen instead.

Freetown is a beautiful place to hang out a d smoke up. Very relaxing atmosphere. There are many amazing graffitis and the lake is good for just silent relaxation. Usually crowded on weekends

We had a blast here, the place rocks. It's like a parallel country. The downsides, however, are that at each step one is 100% aware of being just a tourist (not a feeling we particularly enjoy) and also, we were warned against "staring too long at anything and anybody," which caused a bit of an unnecessary stress at such a beautiful and relaxed place.

very interesting experience. i was looking forward to this city, as i had read a lot about it and i was wondering if what was being written was true. it turned out that it was. in some people, this city may leave an unpleasant feeling, maybe even fear, but i have positive emotions, as it aroused interest in me. i didn't have time to explore it the way i wanted, and that's why my interest is growing. people looked very pleasant, although maybe not all of them, but it just works that way. graffiti, paintings and drawings on the walls, interesting sculptures and works of art stare at you all around. i want to visit again.

Absolutely beautiful artsy area, wandering around at night you get people asking if you wanna buy hash or weed but besides that it’s pretty peaceful! A lot of people are scared of anarchist communes, and they’re not for everyone, but everyone is typically chill and nice. Also tons of public 24 bathrooms throughout

  • 4/5 Teresa M. 10 months ago on Google
Definitely worth a visit, it's a real eye-opener in terms of alternative ways of life. To be honest, I didn't feel safe walking there alone, but that may be just due to my own traumatizing experiences with people on drugs. Overall the vibe was very chill.

  • 4/5 Noel E. 7 months ago on Google
This place was cool to visit. It is very artsy. The main part where you enter people will look at you really hard and they do not allow pictures or video recording at all. There is a shop that has art and live music with poets in the entrance. You can take pictures here and record. The other parts of Christiania don’t have much to see just many small art shops and a horse stable with horses. Just be careful with the locals who do not like to get photographed.

Has had a few issues with gang related violence but hasn't made a difference with the police presence. Spent the after noon having some hemp beer and wandering round soaking in the sunshine and the atmosphere , definatly a favorite place

A landmark in Copenhagen, where pretty much any tourist will go through out of curiosity. The further you get from Pusher street, the more interesting/relaxed it becomes. A lot of street art to be seen.

If you're looking for a unique, quirky but artsy place around Copenhagen you should check Christiania out. You're not supposed to take any pictures but I managed to get a couple a few years ago.

This place was everything I expected it to be. 1. They claimed to be independent from Denmark. However, it’s not the case all the vital services are provided by the city of Copenhagen, water, sewer, electricity, and garbage collection. 2. They claim they don’t pay taxes not true. They do pay taxes to the city of Copenhagen and Danish government for the services above just like any other citizen. On top of that, they also pay taxes to their “country” of Christiania. If you know a little bit of how the world works, you know where that money goes as I have not noticed anything that would resent resemble a working society. 3. Many people rent from the government so they do have to pay property tax just like the rest. 4. Graffiti and trash is everywhere. Falling leaves have not been cleaned from the previous year’s foliage. 5. Main thing that people are fixating on is the drug use and selling of drugs, however, coming from the United States I am not surprised whatsoever. It is, so to speak, by design. All and all it looks like a cute government social experiment that can be ended any moment if needed. However an interesting way to deal with a homeless population.

You need a little bit of information when you visit this place to understand it, otherwise you could think that is just a hippie settlement more.

If you’re expecting some clean, hippy, bohemian community town on your trip to Copenhagen, then it is not here! My advice would be stay away unless you want the novelty of walking by scary looking gangs of men in puffer coats who are selling drugs. I’m sure in the 70’s it would have been a wonderful, clean place to visit - however in 2024, it’s dirty, rundown and unsafe - do not bring children!

Nice, and artistic place. You can find many murals and one of the wooden giants. Also you can buy many things tax free

The controversial free town has a lot to offer. Other the illegal cannabis trade going on here, you have a skating board rink and lots of shops. You have a vast plaza where you can have drinks and something to eat. If you go up a small hill, you can check a serene lake. It feels pretty hippy in here

An independent community in Copenhagen. A must see while visiting, and the home of singer Lukas Graham. A great community with art, food and entertainment in the summer. Make sure you read signs of where you can take pictures and where you can't.

We visited with kids (8-11 years old), I'm generally fairly relaxed but found it really not suitable for a family visit. Lots of weed being smoked, and hordes of dealers approaching everyone selling harder drugs too. They get pretty aggressive if you try to take even a general photo of the streets. Adults with an open mind might enjoy.

An unique environment difficult to come by and experience anywhere else. A lot of smoke around at the Pusher St. and the central area with the bars and such so if you find the smell of cannabis revolting, it might not be for you.

Place becoming a major tourist destination, with gift-shops, ability to take international credit cards etc. I have been coming there since 1975 and the difference is stark. Still a really nice place, and I keep coming back.

  • 1/5 Judith K. 1 year ago on Google
Aside from the graffiti art (which looks better on these pictures here than what I saw myself). This place is trash. It smells bad, of weed yes, but also just bad. It isn’t really a tourist attraction. It’s just a bunch of sheds/ houses with unpaved walkways and strange people. I can’t imagine that this became one of Denmark’s biggest tourist attractions for any other reason than that people can buy drugs here.

  • 3/5 Nicholas 8. 1 year ago on Google
Charming but can be unsafe. Muggings not uncommon and some people are like scary looking hardcore gangsters selling drugs and not friendly hippies... Be safe.

Visiting Christiania in Copenhagen was truly an amazing experience. The beautiful lakes and sunny weather added to the charm of the place, making it an ideal destination for a relaxing day out. The community at Christiania is warm and welcoming, and the people we met there were some of the nicest we have ever encountered. The unique atmosphere of Christiania is one that simply must be experienced. The colorful houses and street art create a visually stunning backdrop, while the laid-back vibe of the community makes it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The independent shops and cafes add to the overall charm of the place, offering a range of interesting and unique items for purchase. Overall, our experience at Christiania was incredible and one that we will never forget. The combination of the natural beauty of the area and the warm and friendly people we met made it a truly unforgettable experience. We highly recommend a visit to Christiania to anyone visiting Copenhagen who is looking for something a little out of the ordinary.

We took the daily tour. It was ok. I would have done it again for the Instagram post. That being said, I would have loved to hear more history and stories about what it is like living in Christiania. I felt the tour was just surface level. Murals and photos are very fun. It's a great walk around town, as well. Enjoy if you go!
