Great for history lovers. We did the guided tour and it was a wonderful experience. Some of these one star comments are insane. The emotions around this place are deep but those who forget history are certain to repeat ir

We went with a guided tour with Radius Tours. From Munich, we traveled by train and bus to get to the memorial site. We were with 'German Mark' ...not to be confused with the other Mark 😉 and he provided a lot of insight to the history and development of this memorial site. We came to Munich for Oktoberfest and spent the following morning here. It was sobering, though provoking, impactful, and necessary. You could easily spend the majority of the day here. They do provide self guided audio tours. Someone that we met at our hotel did the audio tour and enjoyed the content. You get a lot of content in the various areas and it's great to see that they are utilizing the space to remember what happened there. It was a very powerful experience.

Definitely worth visiting, but a somber day relative to most tourist experiences. The displays are very informative and in English and German. We used the virtual tour on our phones and felt like we for a great overview between that and the extensive museum. Audioguidesare available, but we did not use. Be prepared to walk a bit but it is flat. First thing when you arrive, check on the time of the documentary movie in your language as it fills fast and we never got in. Plan on spending at least 2-3 hours. Facilities like WC and Cafe were clean and good quality. The muffin I had and strudel we ate was fabulous.

A truly humbling and somber experience. One of those places that isn't fun but it is important to remember our history as not to repeat it. For the most part visitors were very quiet and respectful, speaking only in whispers. I was appalled at a few visitors who were making jokes about the gas chambers and taking irreveerant pictures. It took everything in me to only say, "Please stop." I'd highly recommend visiting with the understanding there isn't anything funny about the history of this place.

Saddening and thought provoking place. This was the concentration camp that set the example for all the other camps around the country and was also the longest lasting one. This is dedicated to the memory of the 43,000 or so who died here as well as the many others who survived. No tickets are needed for entry. Please take time to read the material displayed or listen to the audio guide.

Everyone over the age of 13 should visit here. Read the excellent displays - every word. Allow plenty of time to really understand what happened here and why. It must not be allowed to happen again anywhere in the world to anyone. Only by understanding how and why something happened can you learn how to stop it from ever happening again. This could have been hidden from public view or diminished in scope. Instead, this memorial over the years has become better, more complete, and more accurate to the reality and horrors occurring here. Spend the time necessary to learn from these events at this historic location. Plan on 4+ hours.

I don't know how to be descriptive , sensitive and informative at the same time. This was quite frankly the most eye opening experience of my life. The horrors which I was sheltered from came over like an avalanche . This is definitely something that everyone ought to see with their own eyes. The tours were really good and recommended . My tour guide was very informative and knowledgeable (highly recommended) .Even though the level of horrors you see in this tour were frankly out of this world I left it being a better person, someone who's more aware of what can become of mere rumors and what they can snowball into.

Worth going and worth checking it out for lots of reasons. It has a canteen for lunch, a book shop, a Carpark. You can follow guided tour by the centre, just head to the reception to join the tour (think is 3 euro per person) when you get there, this can’t be booked online. There are one at 11am and one at 1pm I think (in English). There are also some in German. You can walk into a small gas chamber used for testing poison on people, and see the crematorium used to burn the bodies. Scary but real. All in front of your eyes. And many more scary details. A lesson not to be missed and always be remembered. The visit is free if you don’t follow the tour. You can do the visit using audio guide too.

It feels somewhat awkward to rate a former concentration camp as 5 stars; however, thus location acknowledges its dubious place in history while teaching to help ensure the past is not repeated. The memorial museum is an attraction all its own. This was my second visit after (first was 19 years ago) and both visits taught me so much. I highly recommend a visit, however somber.

Very sobering place. We arrived early in the morning around 0930hrs and left around 1100hrs —we could have spend more time here but our little ones were getting restless! Right when we were leaving several buses were arriving packed with people. My suggestion is if you’re looking to have a solemn visit go early! The parking lot is €3 bring cash. If you go in the information center they have headphones to translate. I also saw groups with a host but I’m not sure if you are able to sign up before hand or at the information center.

Arrive early and sign up for tour at the visitor center. Entry to memorial is free but tour was about 11 euros per person. The limited group size English led tour is at 11 am and takes about 2 hours. There is a lot of information in the museum and take the extra time (since you arrived early) to go through the material on your own (tour will not spend time with exhibits). Dress appropriately for walking and the weather. There is a small cafeteria in the visitor center.

Visiting the Dachau Concentration Camp was a profound and sobering experience. This historical site stands as a powerful reminder of the atrocities of the past and the importance of remembering them. The museum and exhibits are informative and thought-provoking, providing insight into the lives of those who suffered here. The preserved barracks and grounds offer a haunting glimpse into history. It's a somber but essential visit, promoting understanding and remembrance. The guided tours are highly recommended for a deeper understanding. A visit here is a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit and a commitment to ensuring that such horrors are never repeated.

Anyone from anywhere should make time to come and visit Dachau when you're nearby. We study this in school, but being there, stepping in the rooms where 1000s suffered is just a something you must experience if you can. The descriptions and installations in the maintenance building is excellent. Be mindful of going here on very hot days or very rainy days as there's a lot of open space you'll have to walk through. Do try and go for one of the guided walking tours. They don't have enough English walking tours! And do spend the 4 bucks on the audio guide. Overall plan for 2.5 to 4 hours to walk around this place. If you do have back problems or knees problems, there are enough places to sit and catch your breath. There is free parking nearby.

The entrance and parking neat and well signposted. Entry cost us €3 for parking no cover charges. Visitor centre open with restaurant and clean toilets. Free to use wheelchairs available and English books available in the bookshop. Entrance no longer as original and small ''Arbeit Macht Frei'' sign on a small entrance gate. Enter and the entire site is covered in coarse rough gravel which made pushing a wheelchair a gargantuan task. Saw the barrack field and then to the old SS admin building- entrance to the start of the exhibition NOT wheelchair friendly with steps only. Centre building had a ramp but a bit steep for anyone alone in a chair as even I battled to get my wife over and up. Exhibitions are nicely laid out and quite comprehensive. Sound guides available at the centre. All-in-all a comprehensively laid out experience of a terrible chapter of the inhumanity of man to his own kind.

A good place to revisit history although some parts of the camp were remodelled or modernized, some parts to place an exhibition others probably because of conservation. The entrance was free but places like the barracks were closed. I would advice to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon, specially during hot days.

This place is a must visit. Take the guided tour. It costs money but it is worth it. Totally surreal, horrifying and shocking experience. Couldn't avoid tears in my eyes. The quality of the tour given by the guides is exceptionally good. The museum has all the information regarding the concentration camp and the inhumane atrocities people were subjected to here. It pains the heart to see the sights in the museum. The guided tour takes 2 hours 30 minutes. You can also take the audio guide, but would recommend the guided tour over the audio guide on any day. The tour is offered in both English and German. Absolutely must visit place.

The camp, the bunks are mostly recreated as everything was destroyed after World War II but still very heart wrenching to read all the accounts of torture they had to undergo in the very room and ground. Those brave brave souls... It's a good reminder of what humankind has been through and a homage to those who fought for their lives and others'.

(Translated by Google) This building is the camp museum. I found that it was quite empty and that the museographic choice to deal with the subject of camps in general is not a wise choice. I would have liked to learn more about this camp in particular... The audio guide does not bring a very big benefit to the visit, most of the time it simply repeats what is on the explanatory panels with a small few more details. That's a shame.

I personally think that every single person who has a common sense and healthy conscience MUST pay respect to the victims of the Holocaust. My personal way of doing that is visiting Dachau Concentration camp. First of all, you don’t have to pay expensive tours from Munich and you can get here by yourself (S2 from Munich + short bus ride), since the entrance is free and audio guide costs only 4,5€. Plan to stay here for at least 2 hours, because the exhibition in the main building is huge, informative and educational. You can even attend the cinema in which you can watch the documentary about Dachau (45–50mins). P.S. Please be respectful during your visit, victims deserve that much.

A very interesting and sobering day visit. Learned a lot. People need to know what happened in the historical context. Had an excellent English speaking tour that was very good value when bought from the visitor centre. We made our own way from Munich railway station and bus from Dachau rail station.

Absolutely incredibly powerful place to visit. It’s very well presented and managed - combination of extensive museum exhibits with text (multiple languages), artifacts, real life stories, videos, and pictures. Be sure to read as much as possible as you tour. There are memorials and public art throughout the site that represent many different backgrounds of the victims impacted. Careful reconstruction has been done on a few buildings, some original buildings remain, and much of the open ground is there from where original buildings once stood. We spent nearly 4.5 hours there and could have easily spent longer as learned lots. Audio guides in different languages are available.

What's to say? It's a concentration camp. It's compelling; it's disgusting. My daughter is 14. She would not recommend it. No fee for admission. The S2 train stops in Dachau, bus 726 will deliver you right to the entrance. Expect to spend a couple hrs there at least. Lots of tours going on, but easily navigatable on your own.

We arrived at 9 am (right when they opened) and there was no line. When we went to leave at 1 PM we saw a line. We would suggest getting there right at 9 AM or the opening time. we had a plane to catch or we would’ve stayed even longer. We were there 4 hours and were racing at the end.

An extremely interesting and educational experience on the horrors of concentration camps. They have done a great job with the audio guided tour. The last part of the visit is structured as an exhibition with objects, documents, pictures and interesting description. Although this is a strong experience, I would definitely recommend it. The camp can be easily reached from Munich by train.

It's heavy but worth it. I'm a history buff, and there were things on this visit I didn't even know. People say you need 2-3 hours, and it was my second time there and going thriving the whole thing (not enough time the first time). You need way more than 3 hours if you want to see everything, read everything and do the walk of remembrance.

Incredible experience! There's limited parking out front, but they're building parking lots now. There's also a bus from town you can take right to the entrance. I would only recommend the audio tour if you can't read English or German, or if you want to hear much more detail (to visit all the areas and read all the plaques is at least 2 hours, so plan on 3+ to listen to all the extra content). Incredibly moving. Don't miss the bunker in the back or the film that's played every 30 minutes.

I was blown away by how well the memorial (with the help of a tour guide) was able to depict this dark piece of history. I learned many things that history class left out. It is a hard thing to stomach, understanding just how much suffering happened at this place, but as the memorial says, "honor the dead by warning the living." I will never forget what I saw/learned here and I think it's important for us to see how bad things can get so that we don't allow it to happen again.

A good place for history and European lovers. Everything is kept so well. And through the real displays, we can get to know more about how the life of the “prisoners” were like during the time of 1938-1945. When entering the “toxic gas” room, you can have an imagination of how it was like at that time. The place is so big and it’s very nice that it’s free of charge for entrance.

Dachau Concentration Camp was one of the bigger camps during WWII. This memorial site speaks true testaments to the efforts of all the people to make this into a place of healing. This is a powerful place to visit, as the museum depicts many images and videos of prisoners during their time. Be prepared to have some feelings felt while going through here, as some people struggle through it which is totally fine, because it's great to understand what our world went through at a certain point in time and be educated on the matter to help avoid it in the future. Would highly recommend coming to visit here as it's something everyone should see.

Hard to give a five star review on a concentration camp, but it is a really impactful sight. Didn't take many photos as it didn't seem that type of place. Went without a guide and many signs were in German and English. Easy trip i from Munich if you have even basic knowledge of their metro. Worth having lunch or dinner in Dachau after. It is a great little city that unfortunately still shares it's name with the attrocoites of the camp.

Great Experience - I don't really recommend getting the audio (€4.50). Just something else to keep up with. It's just as easy to read the posters all around. Will you do one person working the line? The line was out the door. One person working the line to return the speakers while one person was standing in the information booth. Not doing anything., And wouldn't assist. Other than that small snafu - Great place to reflect on our past and try to remember not to repeat history.

Memorial for the future generations not to forget the human tragedies, and never repeat them. The installations are well maintained. Despite being in the suburbs of Munich, easy access by train plus bus. Not difficult to get there, and a nice glimpse in Dachau town as a bonus. The memorial has a free admission.

Awesome. Frightening. Thought-provoking. The memorial site is huge, the information available is comprehensive, detailed, and laid out in an easy to follow chronological order. Audio guides are available to rent (though not essential, imho). We spent 4 hours on site.... and could easily have spent more time had my feet and back not been killing me by then!! Entry is FREE and I think this is a great decision; money should not prevent anyone and everyone from witnessing this traumatic display.

This is a sad reminder of one of the darkest moments in human history, preserved and presented to help us never forget and never repeat. As this is a somber place, there is no food on the grounds, so eat either before or after you visit. Photos and videos may be upsetting, and one should consider this before coming. The town of Dachau is a lovely residential neighborhood. The grounds surrounding the camp are wooded, grassy, and pleasant: a surprising contrast. Worth a visit. Plan on spending some hours reading the placards and contemplating the meaning of this memorial.

We had a short trip to the memorial site. It is impressive although not many of the original elements are left. The space and the prison part gives you that feeling of hopelessness. It is humbling and creates awareness on the horrors man can inflict on others and how much can one indure. We should be grateful that we don't know any of it.

Impressive experience. I already knew about the things that happened there but to hear it again and be in the place where it happened is hard to describe. However, being there and hearing about it is not understanding. Picturing all the movie scenes about the camps I saw I can’t place an emotion on it. Disbelief in what men is capable of and being overwhelmed, not knowing how to understand the gravity of the events while still fully understanding the enormity of them... it is a MUST see place. Definitely book a guided tour, look for English tours in advance. The tour was excellent. 6 out of 5 stars. And it is all cheap too. And that is good because money should never be a reason to skip this place when you are in the neighborhood.

Great facilities. You could spend a solid hour or more just in the museum part in the main camp building as many sequential displays explaining the Geo political background after WWI leading up and after WWII. The barracks were recreated from historical pictures, the courtyard and surrounding fence & wall with look out towers gave view of confinement. The crematory and gas chambers were very sorrowing place to see.

A must visit location to pay respects and learn about history. Dachau was so moving, I had to hold back tears while walking through the museum. This is an incredible location with vast amounts of knowledge on the tragic holocaust. Please make a visit if you can. I did bring my 2 young children with me and it was fine. Plenty of parking available early on a Saturday morning, parking was 3€ or so, stroller friendly location and good information center where you can rent an audio tour. Also, private group tours in your language are available. I enjoyed my visit here.

Absolutely worth visiting when in Münich. I would advise buying the audio guide, as it is very clear and also has witnesses from that time telling about their experience and describing how it was. It's very interesting and very well organized. There is a bus stop very close to the memorial, so you can get there very easily from the train station in Dachau. Free entrance, you only need to pay for the audio guide or the tour guide.

Reverting to a place in time filled with ruthless and deplorable events. The panic, fear and poverty is felt on Dachau's atmosphere.

Dead prisoners piled up in a room adjacent waiting to be incinerated. These bodies were discovered by the American 45th infantry division when they liberated the Dachau concentration camp on April 29th 1945. The discovery of these bodies was one of many instances American soldiers used to justify the Dachau liberation reprisal executions, where they executed an unproven number of German camp guards.

Well preserved concentration camp. Free to visit. The museum inside the main building is very complete, lots of information and artifacts. Very worth it to go through it in detail to understand the history fully. All descriptions in English and German. Audio guides are available with additional languages at the visitor center. Guides are sitting at locations around the camp and they'll tell you about them. Great experience visiting this memorial. Parking is 3 euros

There are places, such as the redwoods, that feel blessed. They feel like cathedrals and speak to the good in us. Dachau feels like the very ground has been poisoned by the pain and suffering that was inflicted there. I wonder if it will ever feel cleansed. Go to Dachau, and to places like them wherever they are in the world. Say a prayer for the people that suffered there. They stand as indictments against tyranny, and as a reminder of what happens when men and women of conscience remain silent. Never forget.

Definitely a heavy trip. A lot of history is contained here, and my only complaint of the day was that I did not have more time to spend here soaking everything in and learning more. Definitely a must have for any history buffs, or just anyone who wants to see one of the sites of the darkest depths that humanity has ever sunk to.

This was the first concentration camp created. It served as a model for all other concentration camps. If you like history and are willing to choke up your tears, definitely go. It’s not as graphic, but if you read and hear the stories there you will realize that evil does exist. I recommend everyone to visit this place. It’s worth the time and travel. :) I’m not posting more pictures due to the graphic nature of it.

This is a place that everyone should visit once in their lifetime. Learn from history to avoid repeating it. My advice to you is to take a whole day for it, read all the boards. Look carefully at the whole room. There are many details.

Amazing experience but here’s some help for any English speaking tourists. Tour Group tickets are sold the day of. They will sell all day tickets starting when they open, not exactly what their info says on the website. If you don’t use a tour guide, I recommend not using the audio guide, it seems like you can walk and read better than you could by clicking buttons.

  • 5/5 Nathan S. 10 months ago on Google
A moving experience. It's challenging to comprehend all that happened and how it came to be. Highly recommend a visit here. They speak perfect English as they deal with thousands of tourists each day. The information is also in English so no need for translation. Additionally, they have movie times and tour guides who will walk you through the location in English.

Dachau is the first constructed concentration camp and if you want to gain a different perspective in life, you must definitely visit here. Note: Free entry but I highly recommend to buy an audio guide machine. Leverages the whole experience to a higher level.

Somber museum. Great memorial, good historical reminder for the whole world to exist in peace rather than hatred ✌️. It was totally Worth $4 getting the audioguide for the tour.

Sure does open your eyes as to what went on, not a visit for the feint of heart. I have mixed feelings about the place and part of me wished that it was demolished never to be seen again, but after visiting It was made clear to me that ex-inmates of the camp had fought for it to be opened as a memorial, so that's just the way it goes I guess.
