Mirisawetiya Stupa at Night The Mirisaweti Stupa (Sinhala: මිරිසවැටිය, Mirisavæṭiya) is a memorial building, a stupa, situated in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.[1] King Dutugamunu (161 BC to 137 BC) built the Mirisaveti Stupa after defeating King Elara. After placing the Buddha relics in the sceptre, he had gone to Tissa Wewa for a bath leaving the sceptre. After the bath he returned to the place where the sceptre was placed, and it is said that it could not be moved. The stupa was built in the place where the sceptre stood. It is also said that he remembered that he partook a chilly curry without offering it to the sangha. In order to punish himself he built the Mirisavetiya Dagaba. The extent of this land is about 50 acres (20 ha). Although the king Kasyapa I and Kasyapa V renovated this, from time to time it was dilapidated.

One of the ancient architectures in the era of King dutugamunu. The stupa has being built in tribute to Buddhist monks as king dutugamunu has not been able to donate a chili (known as miris in sinhala) meal to the monks.

Mirisawatiya stupa one of the great stupas built by King Dutugamunu. There is a nice folklore on the reason for building this stupa. This place is calm and quiet during weekdays. But on weekends it can be somewhat crowded. The breeze from Tissa wewa and Basawakkulama wewa make this place cool and relaxing during night.

The magnificent shupa 'Mirisavetiya' is situated at Anuradhapura Srilanka. The height of this archaeological marvel is 192 feets and is about 141 feet in diameter to the present. This Dtupa is considered as the 2 nd Stupa, built in SriLanka and the very 1st Stupa built by king Dutugamunu. According to the oldest written history book of the Srilanka, The 'Mahawanshaya', king Dutugamunu's sacred simbol of kingship with Load Buddha's sacred relics inside (Jayakonthaya) was magically stuck to mother earth, exsacly at this place. In order to memorize this magical event, the king has built 'Mirisawatiya Stupa' surrounding that. The Stupa was named as 'Mirisavetiya', to memorize the chille curry that the king forgot to offer as arms to Bikkus. The beautiful shapes of the stone carvings that are more than 1900 years old, can already be seen clearly up to date among ruins and its unimaginable how eligent those were look like at that time. The huge 'Salapathala Maluwa' (the sourrounding stone paved area around the Stupa) gives us a hint about how large the Stupa would have been at the time of completion. Its totally all our responsibility to protect these ancient marvels to the future.

Do not visit here from 11am to 4pm , if you are unable to walk on hot walking paths around the Stupa without slippers or shoes. Specially for kids, Free parking available Washroom facility available , but very poor cleaning. You can purchase statues, toys and drink some cool drinks . recommended to visit in the evening or morning hours before 11am to avoid hot walking paths due to sunlight

Mirisawetiya Dagaba has been built by King Dutugamunu (161-137 BC) and this belongs to Mahavihara Complex. King Dutugamunu is the great king who defeated the Tamil invaders who ruled the country for 30 years and brought the country under one ruler. When the great king Dutugamunu was going to the water festival after his consecration he left his sceptre (kunta) which had a scared relic of Buddha inside, on this location. When he returned the kunta was stuck and nobody could remove it. So the king seeing this miracle constructed a Dagaba here. It is said that he called this dagaba “Mirisavatiya” because the king forgot to present a food made out of chilli (miris) to the Buddhist priests before he consumed it. It was the practise of the king to present a portion of all the food which is cooked in this castle to the priests before he consume it. The Dagaba was restored in the in the 1980’s but the whole construction collapsed in 1987.

Mirisaweti Dagoba was built by King Dutugamunu (161-137 BC), after defeating King Elara and was the first monument built by the king following his consecration. The location of the great stupa, according to the great historical narrative, Mahavamsa, is of exceptional significance. The story behind the creation of this splendid stupa is that after the king had successfully completed the war with the Cholas, the sceptre that contained the Relic of Buddha was stored by the king in a place before leaving for the water festival at Tissa Wewa. When he returned, he found the sceptre to be immovable. He then decided to provide shelter to this relic to safeguard it. Having completed the construction in three years, the king donated the Viharaya to the Buddhist monks. The extent of this land is about 50 acres (20 ha) and the dome, enshrining the sacred relic, rises above the ground to 192 feet. Although the king Kasyapa I and Kasyapa V renovated this, from time to time it was dilapidated. What stands today is the renovation done by the cultural Triangle Fund in the 1990s.

(Translated by Google) Mirisawetiya Stupa (Historical Stupas in Sri Lanka) *** King Devanam Piyatissa considered the place where the earthquake occurred when he poured water from the golden jug during the offering of the Mahamevna Uyana in honor of his father King Mutasiva and the lands where the flowers were sprinkled by Arahant Mahinda as ancient Atamasthana The first symbol of King Dutugemunu's Sasana service that united Sri Lanka from 161-137 BC was the Mirisawetiya Chaitya which he built for the first time. After uniting all the three Sinhalese and being anointed as the Chief King of Sri Lanka, he came to Tissawewa to participate in the traditional water sports festival with the King's Sadhatuka Jaya Kontha King Dutugemunu kept this victory wreath near him even at the battlefield. It was safely buried somewhere north of Lake Tissa. Looking at it again after a water bath is a miracle. It has not even been able to shake from where it was placed. Eventually the king closed the place where the victory wreath was placed and made a dagoba. That's it. It is said that it took King Dutugemunu 3 years to complete the Mirisaweti Dagoba and the temple. It is said that one hundred thousand monks and ninety thousand monks came to this sacred place and offered this dagoba. According to folklore, the Mirisawetiya Chaitya built around the Jaya Kontha is named after the king who was a great devotee of the Trinity and regularly paid alms to the Maha Sangha. Once, when he had finished eating, the king remembered that he had forgotten to offer one of the chili curries to the monks. The king was shocked and named his first dagoba Mirisawetiya as compensation. The Mirisaweti Dagaba built by King Dutu Gemunu in Anuradhapura is the first attempt at a huge architecture. At first it was 192 feet high and at the bottom of the ruins it was 141 feet in diameter. Today, the height of the pagoda is 209 feet and the circumference is 536 feet. It is said that the amount spent on the construction of the Mirisawetiya at that time is around Rs. 19 billion when combined today. The Chuda Manikya of Mirisawetiya is 1 foot, the tower is 11 feet, the tower is 42 feet, the deity box is 14 feet, the square box is 19 feet, the womb is 100 feet, the pesa ring is 12 feet and the total height is 209 feet. Route - When passing the first roundabout on the Chittampalam road near the Anuradhapura police station, turn left at the roundabout near the clock tower (the road leading to the Tissa Lake) and see the Mirisaweti Dagoba on the right. At present Ven. Ethalawetunawewa Gnanatilake Thero is the Chief Incumbent of the Mirisawetiya Chaitya. More than 2100 years old, Mirisawetiya is one of the most ancient Dagabas in Sri Lanka . Built by the great king Dutugemunu, this Maginficant Structure is a must see for any visitor to the sacred city of Anuradhapura . It is believed that the great king Dutugemunu made many wishes here that have come true during his lifetime. King Dutugemunu built it as a Dagoba of the “Mahavihara” fraternity but as the monks started living there, it sees that Mirisawetiya developed as a separate monastery. The Creator of Mirisawetiya It is rumored that the King once forgot to offer a pod of chillie to the Monks before eating . As a token of apology, it is said that the King named the Dagaba Mirisawetiya. Another theory is that ‘Mirisawetiya‘ is the ancient name of the village on which the dagoba was built (Ref: “Ancient Anuradhapura by Prof. Anuradha Seneviratna”). The Dagaba’s Period of Ruin. The next centuries saw the complete disintegration of the dry zone civilization which lead to the shifting of the Rajarata Kingdom . For the next seven hundred years, the Dagaba lay in ruins. When the Englishman Henry Parker saw the Mirisawetiya in 1873, he saw nothing but a mound covered with large trees and tangled undergrowth. Anuradhapura’s first government agent J.F Dixon , with the help of Mr Smither, first cleared the area surrounding the Dagaba. In the process Smither examined the dagaba and found a magnificent ?Vahalkada?(frontpiece) and measured the dagaba at a height of 200 feet. At that time they found an image house to the west of the Dagaba. Later on Dixon became the president of the Royal Asiatic Society’s Ceylon Branch and with the help of a Rs. 1000 donation from the Society, enabled excavations around the Dagaba under the supervision of Mr Burrow. The unparallel artistic value of the “Vahalkada” is said to be the main reason that so much notice was taken of Mirisawetiya. During the excavations they hoped to find image houses similar to what they found on the Western side, on the other three sides too . However, when they found that the image house on the eastern side was destroyed, they got discouraged and stopped the work. Excavations started again in 1883 and at that time they found the ruins of two image houses in the northern and southern sides of the dagaba. Using a grant obtained from the King of Siam (Now Thailand),for Rs. 12,500, a renovation was begun in 1888 but could not be completed.

One of the Stupa's made by King Dutugamunu after his victory over king Elara. It is said that the king made this stupa to seek forgiveness for eating a chili curry without offering to the clergy. Although this stupa is situated to close to the famous Ruwanweli Stupa, this place is less crowded and one can experience inner peace and serenity. One could hear a lot of birds chirping if you could visit the place early in the morning.

After placing the Lord Buddha's relics in the sceptre, he had gone to Tissa Wewa for a bath leaving the sceptre.

Construction of Mirisewatiya was started by King Dutugemunu and completed by King Saddathissa. It is one of the temples which belongs to 'Atamasthanaya'(8 temples of worship). The temple has a relatively less crowd when compared to other stupas belonging to 'Atamasthanaya'.

Mirisawetiya is a sacred Buddhist place. According to history, this was built by King Dutugamunu to punish himself because of his inability to serve “Chili Sambal” for the “Sanga” (Buddhist monks). I visited here a year ago with my parents. Compared with other stupas in Anuradhapura, Mirisawetiya is not too big, but it is beautiful and tiny.

Another ancient Buddhist archeological place situated in the historic city of Anuradhapura. Built by King Dutugemunu (BC. 161 - 137). The reason behind this Stupa was the king's mourn due to consuming a chili-meal without offering to Sangha. Subsequently, king Gotabaya has expanded this Stupa further.

This also destroyed one of the best Vahalkada structures of Anuradhapura Era. The Dagaba you see now was completed in the 1993 and is enclosing the remains of the original Dagaba and has lost all historic features of the original. The present dagaba is 192 feet (59 metres) in height and 141 (43 metres) feet in diameter. A British scholar who examined this monument in the late 19th century recorded the diameter of the original stupa 168 feet (51 meters) and the height about 200 feet (61 meters) .

(Translated by Google) Mirisawetiya is one of the Atamasthana. There are two main views regarding the construction of the Mirisawetiya Chaitya. The most famous and historically accepted view of this is the story of the chili fish. According to the Mahavamsa, king Dutugemunu had eaten a chilli fish without accepting the apex. The other view is that King Dutugemunu fought with King Elara and anointed Jayalabaya and landed at Tisa Wewa on the seventh day of the waterfall. The work of the stupa and the monastery was completed in three years and it is said that nearly 200,000 bhikkhu bhikkus participated in the Mirisaavati ceremony. May the Triple Gem Bless You !!! Infinite Blessing will bring comfort to all three worlds. May we all be enlightened and enlightened beyond all limits !!!
