This is a fabulous museum rich with local history that is largely overlooked in history classes, including but not limited to the critical nature of the battles in southwestern Netherlands. There is an array of World War II memorabilia, guns, tanks, and clothing. There are also several real bunkers and a rebuilt church. The only room for improvement is that some of the descriptions could be better translated in English and the introductory video did not have subtitled.

In this incredible museum you will mainly learn about the Battle of the Scheldt which was the longest and fiercest battle that was fought in the Netherlands which actually played out from October 2 until November 8, of 1944. But being such a important battle it's pretty odd that museums on this important event are rare in this region, only for a few privately owned Atlantic wall museums, this is the only one in this scale that focuses on the eventful history of Zeeland during the Second World War. But I really enjoyed this museum, and I will say this museum is in the Top 5 together with the Museum in Overloon and I would recommend you plan a visit if you're in the area, you will not regret it.

An excellent museum telling the history of one of the lesser-known battles of WW2. I would urge anyone nearby to pay a visit, but particularly Canadian and British visitors like me, who may not be aware of the pivotal part that their country's forces played in this area. There are English translations for nearly all of the displays. I particularly appreciated the documentary films, hearing first-hand testimony from some of those who were there. The additional photos on display on the electronic displays were also very interesting and moving.

I visited this place ones, this museum getting bigger and bigger by time and they had awesome collection. Some veterans especially from zeeland battalion used to gathered in this museum, but time by time their number getting less and less. I personally knows the couple behind the museum, both of them very helpfull person.

(Translated by Google) For the real enthusiast a must see about the history of the Second World War and the province of Zeeland. An interactive tour about the events told by people who have experienced everything up close. Ironic if you compare it with the freedoms that we as Dutch people now have in this Corona time during the occupation. I thought the museum was very beautiful and spacious. The artifacts from that time are beautifully displayed. A very impressive experience to see all equipment, vehicles and stuff in real life, instead of in a blockbuster movie or black and white documentary.

A comprehensive account of the German occupation and the Battle for Zeeland, Walcheren and the Scheldt estuary – of course with some references to the Matthijs van Heijningen 2020 film. Local history at its best. You are always learning something new. For example, I was surprised about the connection to Franklin D. Roosevelt and found the somewhat tragic post-WW2 deployment of Dutch soldiers to (what is now) Indonesia highly interesting. The collection and the vehicles are outstanding.

the best ww2 museum i have ever been to. the exhibition was very educational besides that there were a lot of things to look at there were also electronic information boards to help you understand the history behind the things on display. the owner and his son were very friendly and the owner even took extra time to talk to me because i still have to wait for my parents. all in all a very good museum

I visited this museum with veterans from 47 RM Commando. Excellent exhibits with a story to tell. Invited to walk around the vehicle restoration hangar and see the work being done to restore vintage military vehicles. I would recommend a visit to this museum.

Lovely place, cannot recommend it more; the exposition is easy to follow and there is many audiovisual content to accompany the expo pieces. On top of that, there is QR codes that offer information on the items alongside historical text in both English, Dutch and German. You will be greated by a 20minute introduction (sadly, there is no subtitles, but you get the idea if you know the basics of the language) and later on you will go through the history of the region from 1939 to the later 1940s. There are items and mannequins of various nature, daily life items, as well as tanks, armored carriers and even a ball turret from a Mitchell bomber! On top of that, the staff is of the most friendly type and eager to share their knowledge and chat. Later, you can visit the park where they have fortifications (Tobruk, AA emplacements and other historical densive structures as well as some sherman tanks). Wouldn't miss the chance to visit this museum if you're running around Middleburg. Friendly advice: Better come early, as it takes 2-3 hours to see everything in detail!

Whilst well set up, more could have been done with all the available space. I've visited many war museums but found this one to be one of the more average (and somewhat boring) ones. Also numerous fake items on display, which most people might not notice, but really annoying when you do.

Had a great day at the Liberation Museum today. Lots of artifacts and just the right amount of reading explaining the Battle of the Scheldt. Added bonus of being able to take dogs into the Museum and there is a lovely café. Not expensive and as mentioned by previous reviewer - it is worth allocating at least three hours if visiting the café. The staff are very welcoming and speak excellent English. Receptionist explains the process of moving around the museum and gave a warm welcome. There are many disabled lifts to allow for wheelchair access to the whole museum. Excellent parking on site.

Fantastic museum with so much to see! We spent half our afternoon there, not expecting the huge amount of relicts from WW II. The tour through the museum starts with a film that gives you a short overview. Footprints on the floor show the way through the building. Everything is well explained (Dutch, English, German and some French) and there are short videos of contemporary witnesses. If you'd like to get further information on some of the items displayed, you can scan a QR code which gives you access to a catalogue. There's also a little shop and a restaurant, on the parking lot you'll find charging stations for electric cars. Outside you'll even find some bunkers and tanks. The place is well structured, highly maintained and perfectly clean. We enjoyed our stay here (as far as you can enjoy a museum about war). It's frightening to see how history repeats although places like these constantly warn us of what happened and how badly it ended.

Well worth a visit! The museum is full of interesting items from World War II and tells the history of the German occupation of Holland, specifically focusing on Zeeland and the battle for the Schelde. Lots of interesting information at the exhibits, with photos and film. They have a wide range of artifacts and many wartime vehicles. It's spacious and modern and houses a restaurant where you can get lunch or a snack, which can be eaten inside or outside on their terrace and a museum shop. There are bunkers and vehicles outside in the large grounds of the museum. Plenty of parking space available.

Empfehlenswert!

  • 4/5 Markus S. 10 months ago on Google

We had an excellent visit. One of the volunteers at the museum took the time to lead us through every exhibit telling us the stories behind the objects (in English too) and at the end showed us some of the other items in the museum's collection. I would highly recommend it and I'm sure next year there will be even more to see. Army volunteers are recreating bunkers and bridges from the liberation of Walcheren.
