Touching and well designed exhibition into conflict around the world and the courage and bravery displayed by photojournalists to document the darkest parts of human history. A brilliant, educational experience and a must-visit for photography and modern history enthusiasts.

It's not easy to write a review of a museum dedicated to such a difficult topic as war. However, we found that the museum managed it really well - no belittling, but also no unnecessary emotional overload. The basement contains photos from the war in Ukraine, the upper level is dedicated to the violent end of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. The pictures do not hide any of the horrors of war and were very moving. It is so important to remind everyone that despite all different viewpoints and beliefs there are no winners in war. Just desolation and pain.

Great museum for a small price (70). Really liked that you get a small booklet explaining all the pictures and giving a bit of background information. When we visited there was a temporary exhibition about the Iraq Iran war, great exhibition!

My favorite museum that we visited in Dubrovnik! I was surprised that I enjoyed it so much, but the photos they have are well curated and there are 3 different main exhibitions. A big bonus is the strong air conditioning, which makes it a great off the beaten path to escape the heat and crowds in the summer. I would budget 30 min if you are just browsing, 1.5 hours if you are a detailed readers.

Forces a powerful confrontation with the brutality of and suffering caused by war. Saddens, angers, and makes one grateful that your life is characterized by safety and comfort. A stunning set of exhibits in a quiet environment that facilitates introspection and reflection.

Insane experience. Some of the most incredible photos I have ever seen…. The sheer willingness of the photographers is very clear and the portrayal of history in the Yugoslav section of the museum is very moving. I had no prior knowledge of the ‘91-‘95 war before now, and I’m glad I visited and learned this important part of history.

Fantastic gallery. Amazing photography and writing that acknowledges the suffering of war on humanity. They kindly let me in even though they were closed at the time. 10/10 must see.

On the one hand it’s a great selection of war photos, on the most important subject, and a good source of reflection on what happened in former Yugoslavia and what has been going on in Ukraine for almost ten years now. On the other hand, it’s pricey, and and obvious cash grab on the war that went over Dubrovnik three decades ago. I didn’t like some chaos in the exhibition e.g. photos from Vukovar siege of 1991 in Bosnian war 1993 section. I think that despite declarations the role of Croats in this war was not fully explained.

Located down a narrow side street in the Old Town, this is a very informative and moving exhibition of war photos. The permanent exhibition is about the various Balkan conflicts and at the moment (May 2023) there is also a temporary exhibition about the war in Ukraine. Loan guidebooks are available that explain the photographs. There is also a voucher on their website for a 10% discount off the admission charge. Note that they do not have any toilet facilities.

Lots to read to catch up with history of this region. First photo show the old town during Croatia War of Independence 1991-1995

Hard-hitting, to say the least. The photographs are well presented and the exhibition is viscerally effective in illustrating the tragedies of war. I found it extremely moving. As others have said, it's also useful to get a better understanding of the history of the region.

Very moving and a must see to understand the people of the Balkans. Also a quiet escape from the hoardes of tourists to reflect and contemplate their recent trauma in a very calm space. Excellent exhibition

you know when you visit a photo gallery and think this could've been uploaded/published on insta or tumblr? this not the same, it's moving and touching and RARE.

Incredibly good photo gallery - a must visit. Powerful and moving, the mantra that a picture tells the story of a thousand words couldn't be more relevant.

Sobering experience that should not be missed. The selection of photos from the Jugoslavian war, Ukraine and various other conflicts. A good level of detail provided on each photo and should be taken in and absorbed in order to get the full effect.

One of the most interesting museums I’ve ever visited. You get a booklet which takes you through each photography, really weaves an interesting/heartbreaking story for those eager to learn more about the breakup of Yugoslavia.

Not a wholly negative experience, but there were some issues worth mentioning. It might be more accurate to call it a gallery and not a museum. It is a bit small, and there was quite minimal information about the conflicts depicted. In some cases, the short descriptions of the photos did not help much to contextualize. I also felt it was missing some information from the photographers themselves (there was one short description about one photographer in the special exhibition section). Also, this is just my opinion, but I found it a bit off-putting seeing prices to purchase prints of some of the photos in the information booklet they give you at the entrance. Lastly, it is obviously a very sombre place to visit, and unfortunately while I was there, there was a rather loud discussion about global politics going on among a group of people at the front desk. The sound carried through practically the whole place, so it was difficult to properly focus and reflect.

Really powerful, and worth a visit. They're keeping it current with photos from the war in Ukraine as well as the 1991-95 Homeland War. 20% off entry if you have a Dubrovnik Pass - even one for a previous day.

Interesting museum. €10 entry fee is okay. Could easily spend a hour viewing and rwading about the photos. Educational look at the side of war most don't want to see or accept.

Amazing photography documenting the savage nature of war. Must visit if you are a photographer, or into combat photography. They give 20% discount with the city pass.

Like all war exhibits, there are the good and bad sides (of having an exhebition). Right now, Oct 2023, the Dubrovnik présentation in 50% Ukrainian, 50% "Yougoslavia no more"; not quite what i expected in Dubrovnik. However, all the photos are an excellent reminder why humanity should have learned by now that war only has loosers. (Any) gains should have been discussed around the table, lives saved. Some of the photos are the hard, true cliches of what war in a prosperous town shouldn't be. I left humbled. Saddened by what saw, glad that things, in western Europe at least, stable. Wishing stability will return ASAP to the people of Ukraine 🇺🇦.

Very interesting place. My only advice would be to relocate some lights or paintings because sometimes the photos reflect the light and can be hard to appreciate them from a certain angle, but despite this it is an excellent exhibition

A unique "museum" that is worth a visit. You get a book that has the narrative of all the photos of the exhibition so you can read the story behind all of them on your own pace and with ease (you return it afterwards).

Very moving and informative museum. Definitely worth a visit. The photographs are so honest, it was very emotional to see many of them. I found the Ukrainian war photos particularly poignant.

As emotive and good quality the photos are, I feel the way the venue is set up could be better in order to really get the stories across and really pull you in a bit more. There is an app you can use to give yourself a self guided tour but I don't think this is conducive to a fully immersive experience. I recommend giving yourself enough time to browse in here as there is a huge volume of content.

very informative and well organized. i wish the captions were given right under or next to the photos though, because it gets a bit park in some spots of the exhibition room, making it difficult to read from catalog. the last section about wars from many other parts of the world could be better organized chronologically.

Amazing collection of photos from the war in the 90's, the whole world should see what war does to families and how much heartbreak it causes. We entered as a family 👪 and when we left we sat outside and reflected together on what we had just seen and how families had been torn apart and left with heartache and grief. It only takes one mans greed to start a war as is what is happening today and I feel sorry for all the families that are hurting today.

Photographs charting the ward triggering the break up of Yugoslavia and other significant conflicts around the world. The photographs come with a guide to explain each one of them. Very eye opening

A small and interesting museum with a permanent (I think) exhibition of pictures of the Yugoslav civil war, and, on my visit, a temporary exhibition of the civil war in Lebanon. Some heartbreaking pictures of the effects of war on the lives of ordinary people. Visited by only a tiny percentage of visitors to the city, and it would be a peaceful refuge if it wasn't for the subject material.

A sobering but necessary part of any visit to Dubrovnik. As the name of the museum suggests, this is a museum exhibiting war photography from some of the world’s most fearless war photographers. Downstairs are revolving exhibitions, and upstairs there’s a permanent collection which displays images from the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s. Though the images are harrowing, this is a visceral and challenging way to learn more about the Balkan conflicts, and discover the human tragedy behind news headlines. I thoroughly recommend stopping by.

I hated it but I think that's what you're supposed feel after seeing this. Just one thing.... I'd like to see more local photography than international. But I'd highly recommend this.

Powerful, striking photography. This is quite a disturbing and difficult experience. The civil war photographs are particularly striking because of the recency if the conflict. It made me think that the children in the war scene photographs were probably amongst the people in the streets outside. So, it is a shocking but important reminder of war. The closeness of the war images of the civil war make the other photographs from conflicts around the world much more harrowing than they might be if you encountered them in a different context. The photographs of child soldiers in Africa and the photographs of refugees in Myanmar are particularly emotive. The dramatic and thought provoking nature of the exhibition content make the quality of the photography seem secondary but that is just a reflection of the photographers' skills. The photography is quite brilliant and there are some compositions which are stunning in their technical genius. This is an exhibition which should not be missed for so many reasons. It is probably too harrowing for younger children but, apart from the quality of the photography, it is a powerful and evocative use of art.

Worth learning the history of the region and the conflict. The setting has amazing views of the city and adds to the impact of the stories told. You cannot remain unaffected by what you read and see.

Very large gallery, which affects and excites. Talk about the wars of Yemen, Yugoslavia and Kosovo. The museum is easily accessible: it is located in the street next to the entrance to the walls and is well signposted. Absolutely worth a visit!

Moving and educational. Incredibly sad to see and given the current situation in Ukraine you can only imagine there will unfortunately be more photos to go into this gallery.
