Space
and
air.
The
history
of
Burgplatz
begins
simultaneously
with
the
history
of
DĂĽsseldorf.
In
1288,
the
fishing
village
received
the
status
of
a
city
on
the
banks
of
the
Rhine,
and
DĂĽsseldorf
Castle
was
built
to
protect
the
city
and
collect
taxes.
The
square
inside
the
castle
is
called
the
“Town
Square”
(Burgplatz),
which
has
never
changed
in
its
entire
history.
For
several
centuries
this
square
was
the
central
square
of
the
city.
In
the
19th
century,
the
castle
was
destroyed
many
times
and
completely
disappeared
at
the
beginning
of
the
20th
century.
But
the
square
remains
and
is
expanded
with
a
promenade
and
access
to
the
Rhine.
