Beautiful and huge building. We visited it for 2,5 hours but it felt we could have stayed for two more. You can go out for lunch and come back to keep enjoying every piece. Audio guides available in different languages.

The Unterlinden Museum (French: Musée Unterlinden) is located in Colmar, in the Alsace region of France. The museum, housed in a 13th-century Dominican religious sisters' convent and a 1906 former public baths building, is home to the Isenheim Altarpiece by Matthias Grünewald and features a large collection of local and international artworks and manufactured artifacts from prehistorical to contemporary times. It is a Musée de France. With roughly 200,000 visitors per year, the museum is the most visited in Alsace.

Nice museum with beautiful paintings and artifacts from the 13th to the 15th century. The style of that era seems to be bright and colorful paintings. Beautiful and and stone work. This museum used to be a convent in the 13th century but now houses these amazing bits of history, which explains the lovely style of architecture. Apparently this museum is the most visited museum in Alsace with over 200,00 thousand visitors a year.

Love the museum! The museum is huge, divided into three parts of building. Inside there are collections of arts and objects from 1200s to modern arts. Loved the architecture of the museum too. Make sure to plan more time to visit here if you want to see all the collections since the museum is SUPER big.

Beautiful museum which is definitely a must if you are visiting Colmar! Its art collection can easily entrain you for a couple of hours. However, if you are in a hurry and don't have much time, then try to enjoy Isenheim Altar - the masterpiece of this museum!

The entry price is pretty high. If you are not into Christian stuff you will not like this museum: there is a lot of old Jesus fan art. The other sections are ok, one about archeology, another with nice paintings, another with really abstract paintings. This museum was not for me (23 y/o), but it is for older people that care about religious paintings. The art is well preserved and explained too, but I did not appreciate my visit.

I rarely give five stars, but I really liked the variety of art and architecture here. I had a few hours to spare while on a visit to Colmar, and found it open on a Monday( as I remember!). There is a huge range of art here, from medieval ( which leaves me cold) to the modern ( more stimulating), with many pieces by local Alsace artists. But the star of the show for me is the huge preserved convent cloister with garden and ancient wells. It brings a touch of history, mystery and airy space to the museum. So I recommend a few hours wandering around these amazingly restored rooms and spaces for anyone arriving in Colmar.

Stunning collection in a beautiful and well maintained building. Far exceeded my expectations. I don't understand comments by some reviewers suggesting the museum being too religious. You can be a complete atheist but still value and be impressed by these paintings. Their historic relevance in the development of European art is unmeasurable. The subject matter is religious as this (with aristocratic portraits) were the main source of work and inspiration for the artists of the time.

Sehr schönes Museum in historischen Räumen.

Nicely organized, well-kept and especially interesting museum. I would recommend to consider at least 1h30 for the visit and if you include the audio guide (2€) even more. The audio guide is very well-made and clear, although it doesn’t cover very well the most modern parts.

Very beautiful museum. the wonderful Issenheim altarpiece. A must see

  • 4/5 Ava B. 4 years ago on Google
The Issenheim altarpiece on its own is a reason to visit the museum. Its location and courtyard are also valuable aspects. The rest of the collection seems a bit arbitrary, though I can recommend the art from the middle ages and the large closets in the design department upstairs. The modern art seems like an afterthought and I wouldn't bother with it if you're as impressed by the older arts as I am.

  • 4/5 Barnabáš P. 4 years ago on Google
A pretty good museum, it has a lot of floors and lot of artworks. Although i am not an art fan i enjoyed it a lot. The reason i am giving only 4 stars are the missing pieces of the altar and some pf the staff were also quite rude. I would especially recomend the top floor which has a lot of bug artworks and of course the main attraction the altar.

Home of the Isenheim Altarpiece, set in the perfect location and surrounded by just the right extras. There are also other works by Grunewald including engravings. The recent renovation had modernized the experience without destroying the feel of such an important destination.

A beautiful museum with artwork from the Medieval age to modern art. Best known for Le Retable d'Issenheim, I think it is worth it just to see the attention to detail on that one painting. There were also some beautiful landscapes by Ortlier and Hertrich that I enjoyed.

A visiter absolument.

It is interesting for religious and cultural documentation of the cloister and the region, at a bit more interactivity would be nice for the children. The information is provided in three languages, French, German, and English. The bluish and whitish arrows should guide you through the full exhibition. But at the end it left the feeling we missed something as between the floors it was a little confusing.

Don't overdo it, they don't push the wagons to the bottom of the mine either .... Only one named Fatima smiled and was welcoming The worst is the one that throws people at the door 20 minutes before the end .... Sad all the same this mentality ... The museum is organised very confusing. The plates explaining certain pieces of art are placed randomly at walls and not at the art itself and I actually had to go find the right plate for some prices. On top of that the different areas are not really thematically connected and you sometimes stumble into a room and wonder why there are suddenly completely different kinds of exhibits.

Its curator is a remarkable, competent and passionate person. She listened to her and knew how to share her passion by spicing her brilliant presentation with anecdotes. The altarpiece through the centuries is a chapter in itself. Suddenly, I could not have asked for better than to extend the visit with such a guide. Some works are just amazing. My sincere congratulations to the architects who redesigned the building without destroying anything around it. It is a beautiful place in every sense of the word. (Translated by Google) Rich collection and beautiful museography, with the absolutely extraordinary restored Issenheim. But the dramatizing staging for the outing is unnecessary and a little grotesque, given the health emergency, and the low attendance. When you go out for lunch you have to repeat this whole long journey through the underground passages. Outside (and rightly so) nobody wears a mask in the street ... so urgently need to be changed ..... (Translated by Google) Exceptional collection, varied and perfectly placed. The highlight is obviously the Isenheim altarpiece, but don't think there is just that. Allow at least 2 hours for the visit. The museum covers a period which goes from prehistory to the present day, without forgetting the cloister, the popular arts, the Alsatian cellar and the arts deco swimming pool .... Small complaint on the legibility of the direction of visit. Located in the silence of the walls and the garden of the cloister of an ancient monastery, the museum houses a collection of works and artifacts from prehistoric and contemporary eras. Really beautiful, to visit absolutely. Interesting museum in the center of the city. There are permanent and temporary exhibitions. Constant is interesting for its history. Contemporary extraagant artists are usually chosen as temporary. Be sure to visit the courtyard, it is incomparable!

Neat museum. There was no order however in how everything could be seen. Went across the building multiple times to see rooms which we havent seen. Top would be to put up some signs in which order everything could be seen. Interesting things however. Only the temporary exposition did not make sense.

A fascinating museum with just a few pieces from each artist/period, well-displayed and explained. I don't like large museums and this was the perfect size (took about 1.5hours to see everything). The collection of Alsacian housewares on the second floor can be skipped if pressed for time.

This museum is on the edge of Colmar old town, next door to the Colmar Theater. The museum is set in a 13 c Dominican monastery and it's main attraction is German's master Grunewald altarpiece. However, you'll find also antique art, as well world famous masters such Monet, Goya, Picasso, etc...

I can understand that some would travel to this museum. But I would only recommend it if you are extremely fond of seeing representations of a white Jezus. There are some other interesting works, but you'd be better of going to other museums for such things.

The Unterlinten museum has a well-curated collection but the signage is awful. We didn't even realize we missed a whole wing of the museum until we had already exited the exhibit area and couldn't go back in. Make sure you fully explore to make sure you see all of the parts of the museum you might care about.

Small collection but very diverse. Includes things such as medieval lock sets, silver hoards, wonderfully made old furniture, musical instruments over 300 years old n more.

This is a great museum. At first I thought it was just the chapel, but there's a huge art museum as well. It will take you a few hours to explore it all but it's well worth it.

This museum was larger than expected. They have alot of relgious paintings, only one I found interesting: the large altar piece with folding panels. They also have some musical instruments, wardrobes, pottery, free standing heaters. They have audio recordings, but they lack alot. They would only narate about one item in a room and leave you guessing about many others.

A great museum ( 3 levels ) with lots of art pieces from Alterpiece to Archeology to modern arts . A must visit while you are in Colmar . We have enjoyed the visit here !

I was a bit unsure whether this museum would be worth it but I was blown away by the exhibition integrated throughout with Fabienne Verdier's pieces inspired by the museum collection. It was incredible, the extensive beautiful old Dominican building had many rooms and floors emphasising different periods, as well as the famous Isenheim alterpiece. Absolute must to get the audioguide. Highly recommend not to miss this during your visit to Colmar!

This Museum is a "must" for everybody visiting Colmar! It shows the famous " Isenheimer Altar" which is unique cultural Art piece of the artist Mathis Grunewald or Gothart Nithart Beginning 16th Century of International importance. Furthermore his fellow artists of the same epoque and modern artist until very current artist like Fabienne Verdier, bridging the Altar with actual current history as well as the life of humans and Stars in her exhibition "Le chant des étoiles". Have fun and get the Audio guide !

First halls gives a false impression. We thought it's a relatively small museum. Than it got bigger and wider, we discovered new halls when we thought it was finished. In the end, we found ourselves at another building across the one we entered. And there is a small creek between two buildings. The collection is definitely rich and beautiful. But you can also enjoy the labyrinth-like structure. We spent at least 3 hours there. If you like to examine the details of the drawings and read the explanations, be there on full stamina.

Museum was very interesting and nice to visit. The staff working at the entrance was super friendly but the Person working on -1 was very unnice to us. Dont visit with children. They are not welcome. The normal visitor is way over 70. Sad but true i would not recommand. But the exhibiton itself is very interesting
