Church-chapel
at
the
Bishop's
House
of
the
Saratov
Bishops.
Beginning
of
the
20th
century
The
church-chapel
at
the
Bishop's
House
was
built
under
the
care
of
the
holy
martyr
Hermogenes
(Dolganev;
†1918),
Bishop
of
Saratov
and
Tsaritsyn.
Its
design
in
1903
(according
to
other
sources
-
in
1904)
was
made
by
the
Saratov
architect
Pyotr
Mitrofanovich
Zybin.
Construction
soon
began,
ending
in
1906.
The
stone
tented
church
is
a
2-2.5
times
smaller
copy
of
the
Intercession
Cathedral,
slightly
different
from
the
original,
located
on
Red
Square
in
Moscow
and
popularly
called
St.
Basil's
Cathedral.
There
was
only
one
throne
-
in
honor
of
the
icon
of
the
Mother
of
God
“Consolation
in
Sorrows
and
Sorrows.”
According
to
legend,
the
temple
icon
was
commissioned
by
Bishop
Hermogenes
on
Holy
Mount
Athos
and
was
an
exact
copy
of
the
miraculous
Athonite
prototype.
People
also
called
the
church
“Quench
My
Sorrows.”
Divine
services
in
the
church-chapel
were
performed
daily
by
the
monastic
brethren
from
the
Bishop's
House.
At
the
beginning
of
the
20th
century,
the
brethren
included
16
monks
and
13
novices.
During
the
years
of
Soviet
power,
the
building
was
preserved
almost
in
its
original
form,
however,
like
many
other
churches
in
Russia,
it
was
not
used
for
its
intended
purpose.
By
a
resolution
of
the
Presidium
of
the
Lower
Volga
Regional
Executive
Committee
of
the
Soviets
of
the
Republic
of
Kazakhstan
and
Co.
of
Deputies
dated
January
28,
1930,
the
church-chapel
was
closed
and
its
building
was
converted
into
a
club
of
the
Mother
and
Child
Home.
The
building
then
housed
various
organizations,
the
last
of
which
was
a
planetarium.
The
building
has
been
preserved
almost
in
its
original
form.
In
2007,
repair
and
restoration
work
was
carried
out
in
the
temple:
the
roof
was
replaced,
the
tent
of
the
main
tower
was
made
and
installed,
crosses
were
installed
on
the
small
towers,
the
vault
and
walls
in
the
altar
of
the
temple
were
repaired,
the
roof
of
the
chapel
of
St.
Sergius
of
Radonezh,
facade
of
the
temple
and
refectory.
In
2008-2009
a
fire
protection
system
was
installed
in
the
temple,
the
heating
system
was
replaced,
the
roof
of
the
temple
was
repaired,
ventilation
in
the
refectory
was
repaired
and
two
altars
and
the
altars
“Quench
My
Sorrows”
and
Sergievsky
were
repaired
and
painted,
the
facade
of
the
building
was
repaired.
The
temple
in
honor
of
the
icon
of
the
Mother
of
God
“Quench
My
Sorrows”
is
a
cultural
heritage
site
of
regional
significance.
