Nice museum on the outskirts of town covering the geology, flora, fauna, culture, and history of the Faroes. Definitely worth a visit as a primer to your trip.

A local museum, that is traditional is shown. Do you see then how cruelly the whales are slaughtered ... is after all a tradition !!

This is a great museum. It's not too big and so offers a concise overview of the geology, history and culture of the Faroes. Your ticket includes admission to the open air museum nearby which is also worth noting.

(Translated by Google) The experience of the Faroe Islands would be incomplete without a visit to the National Museum. Here is information about the history of the emergence of the islands, their settlement, life and traditions of the inhabitants. Collected many artifacts and photographs, presented national costumes. It's very interesting here))) (Original) Впечатление о Фарерских островах было бы неполным без визита в Национальный музей. This is what you need. Its very easy to get caught in the virtual splendor of the Faroe Islands. You need to hear the story of the people who have come to love and live here. This is your chance to get to knwo the why and not that it simply exists. a look at the natural inhabitants and a understanding of how the people and place have come together over the centuries.. Well done.

Good museum to go to on a rainy day. Really helps to understand the local population better and have some understanding for the history and natural land formations. Child friendly and easy to visit under 2 hours. I particularly enjoyed the chairs from the church - beautiful! Definitely worth a quick visit.

This museum describes the history of the Faroe Islands from it's geological origins, the arrival of the first Faroese people, and their lives up through modern times. Admission is not expensive. It's a nice way to kill 2-3 hours on a rainy day in Torshavn, but I wouldn't say this was my favorite museum nor my favorite spot on the islands. I thought the exhibits on Faroese church artifacts and Faroese wool were the most interesting.

Lovely museum with lots of information about the Faroe Islands fascinating culture and history. Would definitely recommend spending an hour or two here, especially on a rainy day. If it's dry, check out the open air section at the bottom of the hill as well! Very friendly and knowledgeable staff.

Lots of very well put info, great expositions! We found answers to many questions we were asking ourselves when travelling around Faroe Islands. Very cheap compared to other tourist places. We've spent almost three hours on the indoors part of the museum alone.

Highly recommend a visit to the Museum before you visit the rest of the islands. You will gain several key insights that will make the rest of your stay here even better. The museum provides you with a backdrop to all the historical, religious, cultural and economic goings-on in the Faroe Islands, making your visit to a Viking farmhouse or a cathedral ruin all the more impressive because of your previously gained knowledge. Your ticket also gives you access to the open air museum, which is a short walk away and the open air Whaling station, which is only open during the summer months on Saturday and Sunday. Great value for money, that! Staff were super friendly and welcoming, as always on these islands.

I don't usually visit museums on my vacations, but this one was very interesting. You will learn about the formation of these islands, the history of the people, and how fishing, shipping, and sheep farming shaped the islands economy. A good way to spend a rainy day in Tórshavn. There is an outdoor portion to the museum that I did not have time to visit.

A lot of information, some of it repeats in different sections of the museum. Interesting to learn about history, fishing and sheeps in Faroe islands. Suitable for rainy days, but good enough for when you visit the capital :) Free water and candy for everyone in the lounge section.

Small but well done national museum of the Faroes. Can do it in about 90 minutes. Good exhibits on the geology, flora, and fauna of the islands. In addition nice exhibit on fishing history. The highlight though is the pew ends from St. Olaf in Kirkjubør which are presented very well and are magnificent. Some very interesting archeological exhibits as well. Good gift shop. It will rain while you’re in town so good place to spend some time inside!

So interesting museum with information about history, flora, fauna and traditions of FI. There is a place to take your own food. And don’t forget to visit also open-air museum which is 5 min walk from main museum. There is a local farmhouse from 19th century here. Just take your tickets from National museum with you.

Although we were told when buying the tickets that there's a lower floor, which seemed obvious (see the whale skeletons), we were unaware of the size of the rooms below. Sadly we had only 10 minutes to rush through (loads of interesting panels on the main floor too!). Especially sad that there were multiple activity options in the subground floor, which we had to leave out due to our schedule. Don't follow our mistake! I hope I can return another time and learn more about that part of Faroese culture and history 🙂🇫🇴

Very much enjoyed the history stayed three hours. English written words was very much appreciated. Only fault is when the class of a dozen school children arrived they ran and made so much noise it was hard to concentrate on reading. Date visited 21 St Sept 2022 at 10am to 1pm

(Translated by Google) Museum on the history of the islands (cultural, geological, flora and fauna) from ancient times until today. It can be seen in about an hour and a half and is full of explanatory panels (also in English). One section is dedicated to the geological history of the islands, another to the flora and fauna (very interesting, with numerous reproductions of birds, fish and mammals), and another to the cultural and economic history of the island from the Vikings to the present day. The ticket includes a visit to the open-air museum (5 minutes on foot; ask for directions at the museum ticket office because there are no signs): it is a large well-preserved 19th century farm, with several buildings, from which it also enjoys a beautiful view over the gulf and the island of Nolsoy.

One of my favourite places in Tórshavn / Hóyvik. A deep insight into the history and phenomena of and connected to the Faroe Islands. The joint open-air museum is bringing you back over a century, immerse your self in the lives of rich Faroese people back in the day. Reserve a lot of time / the entire afternoon for the visit. You can also walk the old road from the lagoon below to get a sense of means of travel before the automobiles and tunnels.

The museum is quite outside of the center of Tórshavn. It looks smaller than it actually is and we were surprised to find new rooms and corridors in the lower floors. We really enjoyed our visit and bought alot of small presents from the museum shop as well.
