Eye opening to see something different from your conventional tourist attractions. Merkato is huge, wild, crowded, warm, colourful, busy, chaotic and more. There is a vast array of products here and you need patience to browse and find what you are interested in. You may feel exhilarated or overwhelmed depending on your appetite for adventure and curiosity.

Even though different media's and website claims different marketplace names to be the largest marketplace in East Africa or Africa as whole; many financial and marketing researchers from different part of the world actually discover that Merkato is the largest and multi sector sells places in the in the entire continent and (the place can serve a very small amount of transaction which is less than $1 to huge importers and exporters million dollars market deals) many features of the market made it a very diversified location in the city and a place which won't let you, if you are looking for anything, something or everything. If you actually dropped by around that area, you might understand what I am saying!!

You can find anything in this market and at the same time lose everything, be aware of the thieves. The best market in town.

I placed an order online the items were never delivered. I tried to contact the phone number listed on the site both in Addis & the US and was never able to get in touch with anyone. The office location listed on the site was also closed. This site is a scam now and you will loose your money if you tried to order and pay online.

Had a great experience going around Merkato with our tour guide Yared who does a fantastic local tour inclusive of a coffee and snack stop. I would definitely recommend going with a local who can show you around as it can be chaotic. We found Yared’s WhatsApp number off trip advisor based on good reviews there so posting here for more exposure - +251963727196. A great tour guide worth the price! Thanks Yared :)

Addis Mercato Market is the biggest market in Africa. It is a large open-air market situation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It has different kinds of sight. Small and big alleys, many people carrying heavy load on their heads, ever-moving vehicles, humans and animals. The traffic here is crazy! You just have to catch fun at the sights of the heavy and never-ending streams of pedestrian traffic. It is a place to get all you need.

It was such a fantastic journey to the hall of market The Google has provided directions , intersections and all quite well Although , one should be kept in mind is that there are a lot of items and a lot of people with hustle and bustle everywhere . It feels like you are going through a maze and can be quite overwhelming to process lots of information at once , so I recommend you go there with a person you know , who knows the place very well or/and has good communication ability with people

Sunday might not be the best day to go... lots of people but not many shops or vendors open. But it's obviously a big market area for anything and everything.

I think its the largest open market in east Africa and it is possible to get from small item retails to large whole sales. Besides you can get any thing with a reasonable price and if you are a foreigner's take care of your properties sometimes even for folks its hard to be not deluded by bad guys. So to some up if you are going to visit mercato I advise you to go with people you know from Addis Ababa.
