🙏The Temple of the Tooth, nestled by the beautiful Kandy Lake, stands as one of the most captivating attractions in Kandy. This ancient temple is said to safeguard a sacred tooth relic of Gautama Buddha. The temple's rich history and intricate architecture make it a must-visit destination for tourists and devotees alike. 🕌 While the relic itself remains hidden from public view, the temple's ornate interior, along with the devoted worshippers, offers a deep understanding of the relic's significance to Buddhists worldwide. 🏛️ The temple's architecture is a masterpiece, adorned with intricate golden decorations and carvings that reflect the profound cultural heritage of Sri Lanka. 🙏 Inside the temple, a serene ambiance and the rhythmic chants of prayers create a tranquil atmosphere, allowing visitors to partake in a spiritual experience. 👗 To pay respects to this sacred site, it's important to dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees. 🏞️ Don't miss the opportunity to ascend to the upper floor of the temple, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Kandy. The sight of the city, nestled amid misty hills, is nothing short of breathtaking. 🌳 Surrounding the temple, you'll find lush, beautifully landscaped gardens. A leisurely stroll in these gardens offers moments of serenity, often shared with the playful monkeys that call the temple grounds home. 🌍 In 1988, UNESCO recognized the temple as a World Heritage Site, further underscoring its cultural and historical importance. Visiting the Temple of the Tooth is an immersive experience that allows you to appreciate both the spiritual and aesthetic beauty of this remarkable site. 👍 If you found this review helpful, please mark it as such to encourage more elaborate reviews that assist others in discovering and appreciating more wonderful places ! ✅

‘Dalada Maligawa’, Temple of the Tooth Relic is located in the Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Lord Buddha. It’s a world Heritage site, mainly due to the temple and the relic also the Kandy lake. Faces with a beautiful view and with the lake breeze it’s an amazing place to be. Such a calm place when there’s less crowd. It feels good both mentally and physically to be in that magical place.

An early start to observe the 5:30am (and least crowded) ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth. The impressive temple complex houses the single most important relic in the Buddhist faith, the tooth of the Buddha, and devotees turn up in great numbers with offerings and prayers as the casket containing the tooth is briefly displayed. It was a real privilege to witness this special moment (although you don’t actually get to see the tooth) and later explore the riches the temple complex has to offer.

Beautiful place! Separate entrance for foreign tourists (both for screening and entrance). We hired a guide which was worth the money. We were inside for about one hour. Getting tickets is easy, even during a public holiday (which it was). Inside is quite crowded of course.

Kandy's main attraction is the Church of the Tooth. In the complex of buildings often used by the locals, we can also admire wonderful statues, a shrine and the beautiful ceremony of the flower offering of the believers. It’s worth going there for the morning opening because the COVID situation has gathered a serious crowd in the morning. The doors to the relic open when we were there at 10:30, or even sometime in the afternoon. Seeing the commitment of the believers, it was not by chance that the local rulers fought for the possession of the tooth. What is so enchanting is the way the people of Sri Lanka await their line in front of the altars with quiet reverence, respect and discipline. The picture with the two monks is one of my best photos :))

A real beauty of Srilanka.. Before visiting here I was not know about such a temple, my friend suggested me to visit this place in my trip to Srilanka.. Tooth of Buddha, just even by imagining it gives me a peace and calm inside.. I am no one to judge the beauty of this temple. You simply visit here and get blessings of Buddha.. Ticket to the temple are affordable to Indian’s compare to tourists. Average time you will spend here is around 2-3 hours as you will see through other structures inside the temple. Best time to visit is the evening where you can attend the day closing ceremony.

Went for the ceremony with drums and key openings of the doors. A great experience of Buddhism, with true worship with people traveling far to join this event with their family. As a tourist, you ofc pay more - but it is a great place and well worth it if you want to see and learn more about the beliefs and the history. This temple was built in 1595 during the reign of King Vimaladarmasuriya I, and it holds the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha and is important for the Buddhists from all corners of the world. It is also an UNESCO world heritage site. I would recommend it mainly for an experience, looking for a ceremony rather than using it as another photo location. Enjoy!

The Tooth Temple in Kandy is a special place with a Buddha relic. You need security checks and modest clothing. The temple has a cool history, nice design, and quiet inside with prayers. Go upstairs for a nice view. Gardens around are calm with playful monkeys. It recognised by UNESCO. It's an old, crowded temple, but it's cool, especially with museums inside.

One of the beautiful temples in Kandy. There’s a entrance ticket for foreigners. Also, remember to dress appropriately as they wouldn’t allow inside otherwise. Many antique buildings, furniture etc. you can see here. There is a big history behind the temple. Tickets for foreigners is Rs.2000. The ticket machines do not give change. Peaceful and respectful place which is located in Kandy, Sri Lanka.

This location is a place of worship and reverence, with its own set of rules, particularly regarding attire, such as wearing white. I believe it's acceptable, considering this place isn't intended for nature observation but holds cultural significance. If you disagree with the rules, it's preferable to avoid it instead of criticizing, given that there are numerous other places in Kandy without strict regulations.

The temple itself is really nice and unique, but the way they manage the tourist flows is frustrating. Infinite queues, not a single sign to direct the visitors (we had no idea where to go), ATM for donations in the middle of the temple (I found it inappropriate for a self declared spiritual and “non-materialistic” place). Also we didn’t have the chance to see the tooth because there were too much people and the line was too long.

Temple of tooth is located in Kandy, and houses the relic of the left canine tooth of the Gautama Buddha. Declared by UNESCO as a World heritage site in 1988, temple of tooth is usually crowded by devotees and worshippers both local and foreigners. Any tourist who visits Sri Lanka, Temple tooth is a definite stop. Site also holds historical importance and has 2 museums which consists important materials such as ornaments, equipments, weapons and dresses used in Kandyan Kingdom centuries ago. Located in the heart of Kandy and scenic view of a lake adds more beauty to the temple.

Just a scam! Nothing else to say about it. Online the price is 1500 a person and we payed 4000 for 2 people. After you have to pay ( donation) to get back your shoes… than there are the guide that are bothering all the time. I understand it’s an important place for the Buddhism’s but for the tourists is just a place were you lose money for nothing in return.

A excellent place situated in Kandy Sri Lanka, which is famous for lord Buddha and it's said that the left tooth is enshrined inside this premises. There's a security check at the entrance. The temple is designed in a beautiful way which gives a visual treat. Visitors should leave their shoes/slippers and go in barefoot. This place is well maintained by the administration. They conduct some sort of ritual ceremony by 6pm daily, it was excellent to watch. Dress code is important, one should cover the shoulder and knees before entering this temple. The climate is cool in Kandy so it is highly recommended to visit. Ppl wear white dress as a symbol of Buddhism. Very calm and peaceful place.

the splendor of the city in its stunning location, an abundance of greenery, a lake in which lizards, fish, snakes swim, huge bats hang in clusters on the trees, which are invisible in the evening, but you just feel that the whole crown of the tree is moving, and in the morning a wild movement begins on trees. a very beautiful Temple, where it smells of lotuses, where they pray to the Tooth of the Buddha ... The spectacle is beautiful, but depressing. The abundance of fruit in Kandy's central market is astounding. In the evening, when the city is a little empty, on the streets you can taste the food of the poor, which is prepared by barefoot vendors right on a sheet of iron, using chicken eggs, some noodles, some skinless chicken meat. very cheap - only 10-12 rupees for a large portion. I also have to try deep-fried pea pies with pepper inside for 5 rupees per piece. in the evening there is a performance near the temple, but it is always so stormy, chaotic, it takes place every two hours, it seems, in the evenings, but you shouldn't pay so much attention to it - everything is designed for tourists and nothing more. If you visit Kandy, be sure to go to Mount Singeria, and not to the unfortunate elephants in chains. a very depressing sight - huge elephants in chains! this is terrible.

You can sit for hours and hear the hymn coming from the temple in the evening. It's peaceful and divine. Sitting on the Kandy hill this temple will bring you peace of mind if you allow it. In the entrance guards/sellers kind of force you to buy offerings at higher prices. But don't let this ruin your experience in this holy temple. Ps. Must wear decent clothes preferably knee length for everyone. Or else you have to buy clothes outside of the temple at a higher price to enter

Temple of the Tooth The Tooth Relic of the Supreme Buddha is deposited here. The Tooth Relic was brought to Sri Lanka from India by Princess Hemamala and the Dhantha Prince in the past. According to ancient rituals, the person in charge of the Tooth Relic was accepted by the people as the king of the country. For that reason, this Tooth Relic has been preserved very safely and reverently by the previous kings.

The royal palace is situated to the north of the temple. [10] John Pybus, who was on an embassy in 1762, gives a detailed description on the royal palace.[11] Vikramabahu III of Gampola (r. 1356-1374) and Sena Sammatha Wickramabahu of Kandy (r. 1469-1511) built royal palaces on this site. Vimaladharmasuriya I of Kandy undertook various decorations to the palace. The Dutch orientalist Philippus Baldaeus visited the palace with General Gerard Pietersz Hulft in 1656. The royal residence was known as "Maha Wasala" in Sinhalese starting in the Polonnaruwa period. The royal palace is also known as "Maligawa." There were three Wahalkadas and an 8 feet (2.4 m) high wall used as main entrances. The section of the palace facing the Natha Devale is said to be the oldest. During the beginning of the British period, it was used by government agent Sir John D'Oyly, 1st Baronet, of Kandy .[10] Successors of D'Oyly have continued to use it as their official residence. Today it is preserved as an archeological museum. Ulpen Ge and Queens Palace are the associated buildings of the palace. The audience hall or magul maduwa is where the Kandyan kings held their court. It was completed during the reign of Sri Vikrama Rajasinha. The carvings of the wooden pillars which support the wooden roof are an example of wood carving of the Kandyan period. Sri Rajadhi Rajasinha of Kandy built it in 1783. The hall was renovated for the reception of arrival of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales in 1872. Originally the hall was 58 by 35.6 feet (17.7 m × 10.9 m); after renovation, its length was extended by an additional 31.6 feet (9.6 m). [14] Other nearby building to the halls believed to be demolished during the British rule. The audience hall was the venue where the Kandyan Convention was drawn up, it was where the convention was read out to the people and where the conference, about the convention was held on 2 March 1815.That space was later used to erect the Kandy Kachcheri and Kandy Supreme Court. Today it is used for state ceremonies and conserved under the department of archaeology.

Locals and the guide informed us In the olden times there is a belief who ever holds the relic holds the governance of the city. The temple unlike the other Buddhist temples have a different architecture and the architecture of the temple was immaculate. The word work was one of the best i have seen. Nestled close to the Udawattakele Sanctuary, The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is one of the most important shrines of Sri Lanka. Also named as Dalada Maligawa, this temple is based in the royal palace of the Kingdom of Kandy. Housing the legendary Budda tooth, the temple is a World Heritage site though very little are the remnants of the original temple built around 1600. Amazing ornamentation with golden fence and extravagant Canadian architecture makes it a blissful sight for the visitors. Dedicated monks unanimously chant the prayers of Malwatte and Aegirine, three times every day, during dawn, noontime and evening at the inner temple. Every Wednesday a holy symbolic bath of the Relic is done is fragrant water and that water is distributed among the visitors known to have healing powers. Location: Royal Palace, Kandy Price: Approximate price starts from 1000 LKR to 2134 LKR Timings: 5:30 AM to 8:00 PM

(Translated by Google) VARIOUS VALUE SECURITY - REMOVAL OF BUDDHA 🌻🌻🌻 The island nation of Sri Lanka is in the shape of a teardrop and many people think it is the shape of a teardrop Buddha. But this is the tear of a blessed nation, with the boundless wisdom of a true enlightened Buddha, the fact that he used divine powers to make 3 visits to this country, it must have a long meaning. for exactly 5,000 years to protect the life of the Dharma as He predicted. Buddhism in Sri Lanka really had a far-reaching influence, carrying more valuable value than property, fame, power or temples and pagodas. It is the way of life and the system of belief towards universal values of truth, goodness and beauty. And most incomparable, is a vast avenue of the elimination and cessation of suffering, due to the comprehensive domination of the impermanent nature, destroys everything in this universe. Buddha's relics, guarded by a king of Ashoka, was invited to Sri Lanka. Before being defeated in a war, the king transferred relics to his niece. The niece put the relics in a bun and brought them to the king of Sri Lanka. The king of Sri Lanka built a palace and worshiped relics. Kandy became the capital of Sri Lanka in 1591, and Buddha tooth relics are worshiped in the temple. It was located in the royal palace complex of the former Kandy Kingdom. The place of worshiping Buddha Tooth Relic is very beautiful and dignified in this Buddhist country of Sri Lanka, anyone who comes to the temple grounds must leave their shoes outside and must not stand with their back to the tower and Buddha statue. . Every day three monks here chant prayers and opened the door to the main stupa for worship. Ordinary pilgrims who cannot enter the place of worshiping the stupa are pointed outside towards the temple to worship the stupa. If you want to go inside where the stupa is located, you must register in advance. It's not easy to sign up kaaaa. If you want to open the golden tower that surrounds this relic, there must be four keys kept by four people: the President of Sri Lanka, the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the High Priest of Sri Lanka and the abbot of the place of custody. Relic Buddha Teeth. The room to worship the stupa is quite small, just enough for one person at the ceremony. There are two monks standing on either side instructing a monk to give a pinch of jasmine flowers to the stūpa to make offerings to the stupa. The beautiful golden stupa is placed in a glass frame approximately 1 meter high in the Buddha's tooth relic that is worshiped inside which few people see.

You have to take a boat ride to go to the island. Once you get there, there are some nice views within the island. Specially, the lighthouse area is nicely maintained. The view of the mainland from the island is also scenic.

This place was in the centre of my attraction as this the place of lord Buddah. I heard that, relic tooth of Buddah was kept there and this the most important place of worship. When I went there, I saw a lot of pious people was there for worship. I stayed there for a long time together with the local people. Then I saw other part of the temple and came back to Colombo. It was really a memorable time of my life. I’m from Bangladesh 🇧🇩.

Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings and is a World Heritage Site mainly due to the temple.

“Dalada” is a holy name for the tooth relic of the ‘Gautama Buddha’ who lived 2600 years ago in India. According to the legend a single tooth was remained after the cremation of Buddha and many fought to keep the tooth, since whoever has it, has the divine power to rule. After successfully smuggled to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD, tooth relic is securely deposited in Kandy, in the palace where Sri Lankas last king lived. Every year in August, Tooth relic is displayed to the people with a big pageant marching throughout the city with colorful dancers, drum beaters, hundreds of decorated elephants which is one of the biggest cultural events in Sri Lanka that attracts locals and tourists all over the world.

Said to be the tooth of Lord Buddha himself, it is enshrined in the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. Visiting this sacred site was an awe-inspiring experience. The relic is beautifully displayed within its golden casket, draped in layers of delicate and vibrant fabrics. The atmosphere in the temple is serene and peaceful, making it a perfect place for reflection and spiritual connection. Possibly the most important temple in Sri Lanka, which houses the sacred tooth of Buddha. The temple isn't signposted all to well, so it might be worth getting a guide outside at a reasonable cost of course. For those that want to see elephants, there is a stable at the back, which houses 2-3 elephants, which you can ask to feed and wash.

The Tooth Temple, situated on the picturesque shores of Kandy Lake, stands as one of the city's most significant attractions. This ancient temple is famous for safeguarding a sacred tooth believed to be that of Gautam Buddha. Its historical and architectural beauty, along with the numerous museums within its campus, make it a compelling destination. While it can get quite crowded, especially during the rainy season, and walking barefoot can be a challenge, the experience of visiting this temple is undeniably worthwhile.

The tooth temple is one of the biggest attractions of Kandy. Situated on the beautiful Kandy Lake, this ancient temple claims to preserve a tooth of Goutam Buddha. It's an old and beautiful structure, and there are several museums within the temple campus. It's usually crowded and it's difficult too walk around bare foot especially in the rainy season, but it's certainly worth visiting.

The temple is impressive! We visited during the evening ceremony, which was beautiful! Lots of flowers. Hightly recommend! The ceremonial music is performed throught, which adds a special touch. The drum players at the temple are better and more authentic than at the Kandian dance performance that we visited prior. Beautiful views over Kandy lake. Price 2000 rupees per adult, which is well worth it. Shoe check is 100 rupees per storage box

The sacred Temple of Tooth is a world renowned place of worship where the left canine tooth of the Lord Buddha is placed. This holy place, which is venerated by local and foreign devotees every day, was named as a world heritage in 1988 by UNESCO The Temple of Tooth at the final location of the Sacred Kandy is Tooth (Left Canine) of the Buddha, which was brought to Sri Lanka during the reign of King Kirtisri Megahavanna (301-328) by Prince Danta and Princess Hemamala from the kingdom of Kalinga, India. It became the paladium of the Sri Lankan Kings and was preciously guarded in a special Shrine built within the precincts of the royal palace, wherever the capital was located. The ruins of such edifices remain in ancient capitals of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambabeniya, Yapahuwa, Kurunegala, Kotte and Gampola, while at Kandy, the last capital, the Sacred Tooth Relic Temple continues to be the greatest Shrine that receives the utmost veneration of the Buddhist world.

(Translated by Google) Diving and snorkeling paradise, a bit away from the tourist hotspots. For a little money we had a fisherman drive us to the island, then we went to the old, small harbor on the north-east bank to swim and snorkel. One cuts the coconuts, the other collects them by swimming. Adventurous. (Original) Tauch- und Schnorchelparadies, etwas abseits der Touristenhotspots. (Translated by Google) Barberry Island Lighthouse, Beruwala | BARBERYN ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE (BERUWALA) Prior to the use of modern technologies such as GPS, navigation around the world was carried out using lighthouse light signals. The Lighthouse on Barber Island, located near the Beruwela area, can be described as a lighthouse used in Sri Lanka in the past. It takes about 10 minutes by boat to reach here. This white lighthouse is built on a rocky outcrop very close to the shores of an island that has been eroded by the sea for hundreds of years. Being an isolated island away from the main island of Sri Lanka, Barber Island is a quiet paradise. Well-grown coconut trees and other trees can be seen all over the island, and the white lighthouse tower that rises in the middle of the green island during the boat ride to this place is a beautiful sight in the distance. Built by the British government several years ago, the lighthouse is 110 feet high and has yellow stones embedded in the side walls of the tower. The lighthouse, which remained in operation until the end of the Royal Lighthouse service in 1972, is a masterpiece of British architecture and engineering. Also about an hour away from Colombo, this beautiful place has attracted the attention of foreign tourists more than local tourists due to the beauty, historical value and unique location of Barber Island. 👉 Barberyn Lighthouse (also known as Beruwala Lighthouse) is a lighthouse located on Barberyn Island. Barberyn Island a 3.25 ha (8.0 acres) island situated 0.8 km (0.50 mi) offshore from the town of Beruwala on the south-west coast of Sri Lanka, 56 km (35 mi) south of Colombo. The lighthouse is a 34 m ( 112 ft) high round white conical granite tower. Went to the Sacred temple on the Independence Day. There was fairly large crowd. But the police and the temple staff managed to control the social distancing. Sometimes there are some official who spoil it by trying to form two lines. 😁 as my wife entered before me she offered both pathras of milk rice. Later found her near the oil lamps. We are fine with it as this the new normal.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic; commonly known as the ශ්‍රී දළදා මාළිගාව (Glorious Tooth Temple), is a Buddhist temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It is located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of Kandy, which houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha. Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country. The relic was historically held by Sinhalese kings. The temple of the tooth is a World Heritage Site mainly due to the temple and the relic. [Wikipedia]

This monumental temple is worth a visit when you are in Kandy. It was interesting to see the hords of people revering the old shrine where the sacred tooth is said to be, and the newly built shrine is worth a visit too. I spent 3 hours here including visiting the nearby World Buddhism museum and the many other temples nearby.

It was beautiful. I had read that tourists got hassled a lot to have a guide etc. And that it was expensive to get in, but that wasn't true. I didn't get hassled and it wasn't as much as I thought to get in (can't remember!). I went to 6.30 ceremony, when they open the doors so you can see the gold shrine where the tooth is encased. Very lovely.

One of the most important Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. There is a Buddha's tooth in it. The ceremonies are held three times a day, in the evening at 6:30 PM. Tickets for foreigners 2000 Rs. The ticket machines do not give change. Be careful, in front of the temple they try to convince you that your clothes are inappropriate and they want to sell you scarves.

  • 5/5 Gopal Kumar M. 2 years ago on Google
Stunning in all ways. Keep 3-4 hours in hand to discover the whole place. The ticket price is 1500(SARC)/2000 SLR. If you don't want to pay you can also visit the temples outside the ticket zone.

I recently had the privilege of visiting the Dalada Maligawa, also known as the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, in Kandy, Sri Lanka. It was an experience that left me awe-inspired and deeply connected to the rich cultural and religious heritage of the country. From the moment I entered the temple complex, I was captivated by its grandeur and serenity. The beautifully adorned entrance gate, the meticulously maintained gardens, and the overall sense of tranquility created a welcoming atmosphere. The temple's architecture, with its intricate carvings and splendid craftsmanship, is a testament to the remarkable skills of ancient Sri Lankan artisans. Upon entering the main shrine, where the sacred tooth relic of Lord Buddha is enshrined, I was enveloped in a palpable sense of reverence and spirituality. The devotion and respect displayed by the pilgrims and devotees were truly inspiring. The atmosphere was filled with the soothing chants of Buddhist prayers and the fragrance of incense, creating a truly immersive experience. The inner sanctum, where the tooth relic is kept, is a sight to behold. The ornate golden casket housing the relic is surrounded by offerings of flowers and devotional items. The sanctity and significance of the tooth relic, believed to be a relic of Lord Buddha himself, cannot be overstated. It is a deeply revered symbol of faith for Buddhists worldwide, and being in its presence evokes a sense of profound spirituality. The museum within the temple complex offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural significance of the tooth relic. The collection of artifacts, ancient manuscripts, and intricate artwork provides a deeper understanding of Buddhism and its impact on Sri Lankan society. The Dalada Maligawa not only serves as a religious site but also as a cultural hub. The temple complex hosts various festivals and processions, including the grand Esala Perahera, which showcases traditional music, dance, and beautifully adorned elephants. These festivities bring together people from all walks of life, fostering a sense of unity and cultural appreciation.

The temple of the tooth is one of the most sacred places for the Buddhists around the world. It’s very important that you dress appropriately to enter the temple. While in the temple, it’s important to be respectful and quiet since there are a lot of people praying. The architecture is incredible.

The tooth temple is one of the biggest attractions of Kandy. Situated on the beautiful Kandy Lake, this ancient temple claims to preserve a tooth of Goutam Buddha. It's an old and beautiful structure, and there are several museums within the temple campus. It's usually crowded and it's a very nice walk around bare foot especially in the rainy season, and it's certainly worth visiting.
