Galle International Stadium is a cricket stadium in Galle, Sri Lanka, situated near Galle Fort and fringed on two sides by the Indian Ocean. It is considered to be one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world. Before being brought up to international cricket standards, it was known as 'The Esplanade', and is the home ground of the Galle Cricket Club. This Stadium is identified as one of the luckiest venues for the Sri Lankan national cricket team. The ground was built in 1876 as a race course. There was no permanent pavilion until 1892, when a 'grand stand' was built according to a suggestion of P. A. Templer, the then Secretary of the Galle Municipal Council. Eventually the racing ceased and the ground was used for cricket matches more than races. The ground conditions generally favours spin bowling, and as such is considered favourable to the Sri Lankan side which has several good spin bowlers and also a batting line up that is good at playing against spin bowling. This idea is supported by the fact that Sri Lanka has won 12 of the 23 Test matches that have been held at the stadium. The ground is adjacent to a Dutch built fort and is bordered by the sea on two sides.

According to my opinion this is The most beautiful cricket play ground in the world. Around the ground there are sea , harbor, historically valuble dutch fort and galle bus stand. Very beautiful and photogenic place. very easy access. The pitch is close to stadium.

The Galle ground was built in 1876 (in the former Ceylon) as a racecourse but cricket became the dominant user of the facility over time. With the Indian ocean visible on two sides of the ground and the famous clock-tower of the 16th-century Dutch fort towering above, Galle's international stadium was one of the most scenic venues in the world. The ground hosted its inaugural first-class-cricket match on 29-Feb-1984 and was a regular part of the International Cricket circuit until Sri Lanka & the stadium was devastated by the tsunami of 26-Dec-2004. After a bit of ‘toing & froing’ it was agreed to rebuild the Sri Lanka venue from the ground up & that work was completed in time for the visit of the England Test Cricket team in 2008. STOP PRESS 14-Jan-2021: happily the England test team is able to tour Sri Lanka again this year & their first Test Match venue is at Galle. Also just heard somebody say on TV that Galle is the closest test cricket ground to the equator . . . who knew?

Galle Cricket Stadium, a compact arena nestled amidst the embrace of Galle Fort and the ocean, presents a unique cricketing experience. This small yet captivating ground is a lush expanse of green, where the game's essence mingles with natural beauty. While the setting is picturesque, the facilities stand in need of an upgrade to align with modern stadium standards. However, the pitch itself holds its ground – well-maintained and perfectly centered, setting the stage for thrilling matches. The juxtaposition of history and sports adds a distinct charm, as the Galle Fort and ocean provide an enchanting backdrop. It's an intimate space that fosters an unparalleled connection between players and spectators. Visiting the Galle Cricket Stadium offers more than just a cricket match; it's a rendezvous with history and a celebration of the sport. Amidst its scenic beauty, a sense of nostalgia lingers, creating a memorable experience for both sports enthusiasts and explorers of the past.

Galle Cricket Stadium is an iconic venue for cricket enthusiasts and a must-visit for sports fans. My recent visit to this historic ground was truly memorable. The stadium’s picturesque location, right next to the ocean, provides a stunning backdrop for cricket matches. The atmosphere during a game at Galle Cricket Stadium is electric. The passionate fans, both locals and tourists, create an incredible energy that adds to the excitement of the match. The seating is comfortable, and you can get a good view from most areas of the stadium. The staff at the stadium were friendly and accommodating, making the overall experience enjoyable. The facilities, including restrooms and food options, were convenient and well-maintained. The only drawback I noticed was the occasional rain delays, which are not uncommon in this region. However, it’s a minor inconvenience considering the overall experience. If you’re a cricket fan, a visit to Galle Cricket Stadium is a unique opportunity to witness the sport in a historic and breathtaking setting. Whether there’s a match happening or not, the stadium is worth a visit for its cultural and sporting significance.

One of the iconic and most sought after Cricket Stadiums in the world. Used majorly in test cricket. Famously known as one of the best hunting grounds of Sri Lankan team. The Dutch Fort, Clock Tower & the ramparts add colour to this iconic stadium. Was destroyed by the 2004 Tsunami, but was later rebuilt with better facilities.

Galle International Stadium is a cricket stadium in Galle, Sri Lanka, situated near Galle Fort and fringed on two sides by the Indian Ocean. It is considered to be one of the most picturesque cricket grounds in the world. Surrounded by the historical and colossal Galle fort and crowded Galle city, this ground gives you the best of cricket. Many dining places, hotels and B&Bs are there. There's a cruel beauty to Galle Cricket Ground's magnificent location. Fringed on two sides by the Indian Ocean and overlooked by the ancient walls of Galle 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🖤

A very famous and beautiful cricket ground, situated in the middle of Galle town and next to Galle fort. The best view of the ground is from top of the fort 😉 Mostly test cricket is played here because there are no lights in the stadium. Should be improved with more seats and other facilities as well.

One of the few international venues in Sri Lanka to hold Test Cricket matches. Cleanliness is good inside the wings and pavilions. The grass bank has plenty of space to enjoy matches. The Galle fort, which is situated right behind, is quite unique as far as the surrounding environment goes. Light is plentiful as the ground is surrounded by the Great Indian Ocean. It's always a pleasurable experience here!

Galle International Stadium can be considered as the best and the most picturesque one in the world. This is used mostly for Test Cricket Matches and there have been only a few One Day Internationals so far. As this is situated in the centre of the city, it is easier for the fans to reach there. The stadium is surrounded by the World Heritage Site, Dutch Fortress and the beautiful Indian Ocean. Galle International Stadium is considered as The Paradise of Spinners. Muttiah Muralitharan, the spin legend took his 800th test wicket against India here in 2010.
