Visiting Ghent with a group of first timers. Decided to finally check out the famous altarpiece inside St. Bavo’s cathedral. It was my first augmented reality tour and while it took some getting used it (only a couple of minutes) it was quite impressive. The augmented reality tour for €16 granted access to the underground floor of the cathedral where while wearing augmented reality goggles patrons are given the history of the famous lamb altarpiece. An audio clip plays for each part of the visit and then directs you to the next step. What was convenient was when someone bigger or taller stepped in front of you it was no problem as you saw the image playing at the time. The tour then ended with you returning the goggles and going upstairs to the cathedral to see the altarpiece in person. Having done the tour before made seeing the famous panels of the altarpiece that much more special. Highly recommend! Also we went on a hot summer day and we were grateful that it was very cool inside. Also, there are free lockers to store your cameras, purses or backpacks right outside the entrance to the augmented reality tour. All you need is to pick an available locker and then choose a code. Super easy and extremely convenient.

Lovely and unique among the Gothic Cathedrals I have visited, and there have been many. The altar piece is my favorite part of this cathedral, featuring a stunning painting by Van Eyck (Adoration of the Lamb). There is also a great observatory near the top of the Cathedral for stunning views of the city.

The cathedral is free to go in and look around. To see the Ghent altarpiece you may need a reservation if it’s busy. Buy tickets online before or walk up to the desk and buy them there. The fee is 12.50 euro to see the altarpiece, the virtual reality headset tour costs more. The altarpiece is absolutely breathtaking. The latest restorations finished in 2020 have made it seem magical with the case it’s in and the lighting. Wow! There are souvenirs near the entrance to help you remember the altarpiece :) History at its best!

We’ve been in France and Belgium for a week now, and this was undoubtedly the best thing we’ve done so far. The cathedral offers a virtual experience tour for children, and my four kids LOVED it. My husband and I were also impressed! We then were able to see The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb (The Ghent Altarpiece), and it was beautiful beyond words. I cannot say enough positive things. The artistry and architecture of the building moved me to tears. Absolutely worth a visit!

An amazing cathedral to visit. Free entry for the General area but you have to pay 12,50 for adults if you want to see the ghent alterpiece / Adoration of the Mystic Lamb which is a world treasure and a masterpiece of European art. Although it is behind glass, I highly recommended. The architecture is beautiful and you can easily spend 1.5 hours here or more. You can also buy your tickets online. English versions of the flyers and free lockers are available. Staff was friendly.

Amazing, it's like a small Vatican, the art and sculpture are quite simply superb. It is clearly much loved and cared for. Ghent is quite possibly the most beautiful medieval city in northern Europe. The architecture is astonishing. We will be returning for a longer stay.

Just to see the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb is worth a visit. It is a very beautiful altarpiece painted by Van Eyck's brother. But the panel opens only once in the morning so if you want to see it open please check for the time. They also have the painting of the Conversation of Saint Bavo by Peter Paul Rubens here too.

One of the most beautiful cathedrals I’ve ever been to in Europe. The detailed work is just amazing, the structure and up keep is impressive. I was just so amazed by the interiors of the church and the grotto of mother Mary is beautiful. Parking is 5 minutes away at Centrum Parking and is reasonable. If you’re in Gent, it’s a must visit. They do have paid tours but they’re timed.

Impressive gothic cathedral in Ghent. You can take a VR tour and also see an exceptionally well restored Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. This altarpiece was created in the 15th century by the Van Eyck brothers.

Too many things to see to list. Come for the Ghent Altarpiece, stay for everything else. The virtual reality tour is nothing like that have in the USA and I highly recommend it. Don't forget to go in the chapels to see all the art work!

According to guides and recommendations, this place is one of the top ten things to see in Gent - and they were right. Well worth the stop, but I hope you like stairs...lol (but well worth it). Lots of great views from the top and interesting pieces.

Absolutely worth it to get the VR headset and learn the history of the Van Eyck altarpiece before viewing. We would have missed so much info if we hadn't. Advised to get tickets online ahead of time. If they have enough slots open, they'll let you in day of. So beautiful in person. Just breathtaking. No photo ever does it justice.

Saint bavo cathedral, wow what a fantastic architecture and has huge history for this cathedral, spent around an hour just to see the architecture. Such a huge building in the middle of the city . So quite and nice to be here , amazed by the construction, must visit place when you are in gent , no tickets for the front hall , but to visit more inside then you need ticket , prices 9 euro per person . But I don’t recommend to get ticket. You can see from the hall itself .

Great and historical location in Belgium. We visited and purchased tickets to view the Ghent alter peice. The church is a wonderful experience to walk through and view all the art works. We visited and was done in less than. 1 hour and that was more than enough time to view the historical artworks.

What a stunning Cathedral with one of the most iconic artistic pieces the ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ painted by the van Eyck brothers. A must see! Keep in mind to see the Mystic Lamb, there is an entrance fee of €12.50 per adult. Can book a ticket online or pay on site. Price is the same.

If you compare other places with it, this is a scandal for such a world famous painting. My recent visit to Saint Bavo's Cathedral was nothing short of a transcendent experience, earning this majestic landmark a well-deserved five stars. Nestled in the heart of Gent, this cathedral is an architectural masterpiece that effortlessly marries centuries of history with breathtaking artistic achievements. Walking through the grand entrance, I was immediately struck by the cathedral's awe-inspiring Gothic architecture. The towering spires and intricate details create a sense of reverence that sets the tone for the cultural feast that awaits inside. The interior is a sanctuary of tranquility, inviting visitors to marvel at the exquisite stained glass windows, ornate chapels, and the celestial echo of sacred music. The true highlight of Saint Bavo's Cathedral is undoubtedly the Ghent Altarpiece, a masterpiece that commands attention with its sublime beauty. The intricacy of the Van Eyck brothers' work is beyond compare, and witnessing it in person is an art lover's dream come true. The cathedral staff were not only welcoming but also well-versed in the history and significance of the artifacts within. Their passion for sharing the cultural richness of Saint Bavo's Cathedral enhanced my visit, providing valuable insights and making the experience all the more enriching. For any tourist seeking a profound connection with Gent's history and art, Saint Bavo's Cathedral is an absolute must-visit. It is a spiritual and aesthetic journey that promises to leave an indelible mark on anyone fortunate enough to step through its sacred doors.

nice place but a little bit overcrowded for todays "covid" time, partly free, partly paid, I've already seen more beautiful churches in Belgium, it's not possible to sit quietly because people are walking around permanently, it's slightly more commercial than could be, there is even a shop inside?

It goes without saying that this cathedral is most famous for the stunning Adoration of the Mystic Lamb panels, created more than 500 years ago by the Van Eyck brothers. Other than that, there is a very long corridor on the other side of the altar, containing some beautifully decorated chapels as well as a makeshift studio where one can sometimes catch glimpses of the painting's panels when they are being restored. On the side, there is a small but well-stocked shop that has some lovely Christmas decoration during November and December.

Ticket Charge 16euros. The Ghent Altarpiece is not the only masterpiece that is housed within the old walls of the Ghent cathedral. From the in 1536 abolished Saint Bavo’s Abbey, the monks transferred various objects to the former Saint Bavo’s Church. One of the most special is Livinus' manuscript which contains the four Gospels. It is one of the oldest preserved books in Belgium, since it dates from the 9th century. Most of the masterpieces on display were made after the church became a cathedral when the diocese of Ghent was founded in 1559. Here you can already find some of them.

Fine cathedral, lots of interesting artwork around. Didn't bother with the Alter-piece, we've seen many, you can overdose in Antwerp on them, but there is a clothed version of Adam and Eve on display to suit 19th century sensibilities, which rather missed the point I guess. The crypt is worth a quick peek, showing old foundations and brick coffins, no bodies I'm afraid.

Sint-Baafs is stunning. You can take a tour in augmented reality that takes you to the Mystic Lamb and explains its history wonderfully. But the main attraction, I must say, is the Cathedral in itself. It has so much art and details that you could easily spend half a day there and get lost in its splendor.

This cathedral is a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles and is one of the city's must-sees. It contains several works of art such as "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb". These works of art are in a separate paying section. Don't miss it, it is impressive and you can also visit it with 3D glasses that allow you to learn about the history of the painting and its artists.

You should go there! The inside of the cathedral is beautiful already, but the highlight is of course the altarpiece. I highly recommend the VR experience to get more details about the work and the cathedral’s history. It is not much more expensive than just seeing the work and you get much more out of it. I did the 40 minute one which was good but if I had more time I would have liked to do the 60 minutes.

The cathedral itself is rather dark, particularly with the reduced windows and abundance of black stone, compared to many other gothic or baroque churches, but this is still a "must see" for anyone hoping to complete the experience of European art due to the recently-restored Gent Altarpiece, the masterpiece of the van Eyck brothers, which is exhibited in its own room.

  • 5/5 Suneela I. 1 year ago on Google
It is one of the most prominent visual art of Ghent. This 89 meter high catholic gothic cathedral is certainly not to be missed. Needless to mention the amazing architecture and beautiful paintings that would leave you mesmerized. You can witness the Ghent altarpiece or the decorations of the mystic lamb here which is seen as the first major oil painting to gain global fame. The cathedral is open until 5:30pm and the entry is free so plan your visit accordingly. However there is a fee to view the altarpiece which is priced at 12,5 Euros.

  • 2/5 Andrew G. 10 months ago on Google
The Cathedral is really beautiful and fulfilled with art masterpieces. Thatʼs fine. Nevertheless, literally no one, no one person said that more than a half of the Ghent Altarpiece is on the restoration. Only the central piece is original and the rest is copy. Tickets cost 16 EU (!), but for this price you can see only the part of Van Eyckʼs masterpiece. People, please go to the Ghent Art Museum and observe original parts as I did for way more acceptable price. I am profoundly disappointed in this house of God.

I’ve seen many churches in my travels, as I always enjoy visiting them out of love of history, so when I say this is one of the most impressive I’ve seen, is quite a big statement. There is something about the contrasts between the blacks and whites, the beautiful sculpted pulpit, and the most impressive feature of all, the painted altar piece, for which you have to prebook and pay for, but it’s 100% worth it. It is one of the most beautiful paintings I’ve ever seen, I’m so happy I decided to do it.

A very well-built beautiful cathedral in the city of Gent! If you are already here, definitely visit the mystic lamb painting. It does cost something, but you still shouldn't miss this masterpiece. We also got some flyers which explained the different parts of the polyptychon. The people were extremely friendly and spoke German and English to us. The architecture here is just astonishing, wow!

Great to visit with polite, enthusiastic volunteers and staff. We did not book as we didn't know that option was available, still no idea on how to. Take the VR tour (the full €16) and see the crypt, plus the Jaan Van Eyck Gent altarpiece. I haven't included a picture of the altarpiece as it would just not do it justice. More iconography than you can throw a stick at

OK, OK, wait, it's been a week since I visited St bavos, I've just started to process seeing the mystic lamb with my own eyes, I have to say I was blown away just looking at it this painting, the level of detail is absolutely unbelievable this is thee masterpiece! The augmented reality tour was also fantastic and a must when you visit. The cathedral also has a painting by Rubens, and that is also a thing to see, although it's totally overshadowed by the altarpiece by Van Eyck because it is the greatest painting in existence! So in summary, go!

My husband and I stumbled across this cathedral during our visit to Ghent. We were so pleased we popped in as we ended up being entertained by a choir from Wales. Definitely worth the visit. Impressive architecture and obviously... The Altar. MIND YOU - the whole upper half of the altar is being renovated and is replaced by a 1:1 photo (originals returning in 2026). At first it is difficult to spot and there is obvious information available. To see the upper pieces - visit the City' Museum.

A cathedral in the middle of the market, a good calm place to sit outside. A large seating space available inside. On the outside, there are a lot of small shops for souvenirs and truck stalls to grab a quick bite. The timings depend on the days of week and holidays. Extremely beautiful interiors.

The location of the world, famous altarpiece “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb“ which was painted in the 15th century by Van Eck. The altarpiece was described in the movie “monuments men“ but that is not its claim to fame. It has been stolen by a variety of invaders, including Napoleon, Austrians and Nazis, so it is a wonder that it is still intact and now in Sint Bavo (Baafs). It is currently undergoing a multi year restoration, sponsored by the Getty Museum from Los Angeles. It is in the final stage of that restoration so some of the panels have been removed, and can be observed being restored in the Ghent fine arts Museum. Which is located in another place in town in addition to the altarpiece, which requires a separate admission fee, there are numerous beautiful sculptures and final resting places of bishops and popes, rulers of Belgium, and saints. One of the nice things about visiting is that Belgium has beautiful, artwork and cathedrals, but you don’t have the crowds here that you encounter visiting equally famous places in Paris, Munich, Berlin, or other places. If you are truly interested in European and renaissance masterpieces, this would be a must stop visit on your explorations. The altarpiece is ethereal and breathtaking. It has an aura about it. The cathedral has beautiful stained glass and is well worth 2 to 3 hours each time you visit. The local neighborhood has plenty of beer bars that you can quench your thirst after you visited.

  • 5/5 Max O. 3 years ago on Google
It's obvious that the Van Eyck altarpiece in the cathedral is one of the central reasons Ghent is on traveller's map. So yes, it is an amazing painting. Nevertheless St Baafs is also a great cathedral. Anyone who appreciates gothic religious architecture will visit with great joy.

Beautiful old cathedral, with famous van Eyck "Lamb of God" altarpiece. Augmented reality guided tour is excellent. Cathedral entry is free, but not the AR guided tour, or entry to view the altarpiece.

Must visit in Ghent. You will be amazed at the architecture and how artistic everything was made of Inside this Church. Located right at the center of the city and surrounded by many restaurants. You can start your itenary plan from here.

This is one beautiful cathedral. Location wise also it is very good starting point to roam around the Ghent as the Castle, Graffiti street , St.Michels bridge are hardly 10-15 mins by walk.
