The castle is a must visit when you're in Gent.. The city view from above is captivating.. Reserve your ticket online to avoid the tickets line. If you have a stroller, get ready that you will have to leave it by the gate and carry your child along the castle.. The Audio Guide there is one of the best audio guides i ever listened to!! The story is very well written and told.. Overall, i enjoyed my visit very much.

This was a really cool castle and one of my favorites outside of Spain and Germany. There is a great view from the roof and alot of great items within the castle/museum. Tour guides are not necessary in my opinion as audio guides were sufficient for the wife and me.

My visit to Gravensteen in Gent was an unforgettable journey through time, and I can't recommend this historical gem enough to fellow tourists. From the moment I stepped through the imposing gates, I felt transported to a bygone era of knights, royalty, and medieval mystique. The castle's architecture is awe-inspiring, with its well-preserved turrets, drawbridges, and defensive walls. Every corner seemed to tell a story, providing a captivating glimpse into the rich history of Gent. The audio-guided tour was both informative and engaging, offering fascinating insights into the castle's past and the lives of those who once walked its halls. The highlight of my visit was the panoramic view of Gent from the castle's tower. The breathtaking scenery provided the perfect backdrop for photos, capturing the city's charm and blending seamlessly with the castle's ancient allure. The staff at Gravensteen were friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about sharing the castle's history. Their enthusiasm enhanced the overall experience and made the visit even more enjoyable. The well-maintained grounds and thoughtful exhibits added depth to the tour, ensuring that every moment was both educational and entertaining. Whether you're a history buff, architecture enthusiast, or simply looking for a unique tourist experience, Gravensteen is a must-visit destination in Gent. It offers an enchanting journey into the past that will leave you with cherished memories of this medieval masterpiece.

It is a quite old castle and the main function is a castle to protect the city. The audio guide is free but it speaks too long before entering the point, so don't pay much attention to it. The castle is very cold, please prep your gear accordingly. At night it is quite beautiful too. If you stay around here, you can come by and get some pictures at night.

Great castle, strangely built in the centre of the city. If you take the audio guide tour, you will understand why. It gives you some insights into the history of Ghent and the Counts of Flanders.

I had the opportunity to visit this mystery castle around walking and in a boat and the experience was fabulous. I could not do the interior of the Castle tour and the torture museum but the exterior tour was totally majestic. All the surrounding areas was very clean and in good condition.

Very pleasant visit! I cannot stress how important is the audio guide! It is free and extremely funny. Go visit the castle with some spare time and enjoy the experience!

Honestly, to say that I love this castle is an understatement. It's so absolutely perfect. Not just the castle, but the experience. You get an audio player that has the best narrators I've ever come across in any museum ever. The guy is absolutely hilarious and his storytelling is second to none. Further, the tour is organized in kind of like a numbered 'waypoint' based system. So you kind of feel like being inside a medieval adventurer game or a simulation. Needless to say it was extremely entertaining and full of fun facts about the castle's history and the Count and related people that lived in this castle. Highly recommended to visit. 100% worth the money.

Amazing medieval castles with lots to see and amazing art inside! I paid €7 for a student price. They offer a free audio tour guide. You can spend 1-2 hours inside! Make sure you go all the way to the top for an amazing view of Ghent!

A beautiful old castle. Incredibly well kept. The audio tour was interesting and very humorous, although at times quite dark (depictions of torture and death) so not always suitable for younger children or sensitive adults. The place is really well kept, and there's a lovely gift shop on site which is in a beautiful old hall within the castle itself. I recommend taking your time here, don't just rush around it, especially as it operates on a one-way system so once you've left a part you won't be able to return to it.

Visit on: July 1, 2023 --- Reason to visit this castle? I already knew this fantastic castle but my girlfriend had never been there. Always talking about it with her, but never visiting, we decided to visit the Gravensteen. Unfortunately it was a slightly grayer day, but that didn't take away the feeling. The castle, which has been present in Ghent for a long time, and has been used and reused by many, is magnificent to visit. My girlfriend could enjoy the view and the way the castle was built for a long time. The visit itself was super good and the staff was always friendly and helpful. From the top of the castle you have a great view over the city of Ghent. Visit it and let yourself be surprised! Well worth a visit!

A very beautiful well restored castle. The audio guide was very helpful and you could chose and stop it whenever you like. The narrative is very funny. I went here around 1:30 pm. After I finished, the cue was long to enter the castle. So I suggest if you are visiting Ghent on a day trip to come here when they open at 10 am. I was able to get good pictures of the city of Ghent up in the tower. The stairs going up is quite narrow and lots of stairs.

Super fun self guided tour with the voice of a local comedian imparting all sorts of knowledge about this imposing structure. The holiday decorations added to the ambiance of the place. We went right at opening and were glad we did cause when we were leaving 2 hours later there was a wait to enter.

It's a very beautiful castle!! We visited during weekends and was very busy. The entrance is allowed only on time intervals of 20 minutes. We bought our tickets at 12:00 and we had to wait until 12:40 to enter. The ticket's price is normal, just 13 euros per adult. The view from the top is great! It's better to buy your tickets online and arrange in advance for the time you can enter to the museum.

Being in castle always feels amazing, right? Well here is the same feeling + free audio guide that you need to get from the gift shop. Be prepared that the one who tells you the story of the castle is joker and doesn't take it serious so you can relax instead! Worth visiting for sure!

The castle itself on the outside is impressive as well as the views from the top but the interior there is no original furniture etc... It was just built by a rich count... No history or wars were fought here..nice to look around but not much of interest regarding the castle interior...

Nice location to visit and get to know more about the history behind the place. You discover it with an audioguide at your own pace. You use it as a mobilephone or with headphones (which you can buy there). The way the teller tells the history and small stories makes it really fun and enjoyable.

This is a wonderful fortress and a lovely museum with an audio guide included in the entrance ticket (12 euros). The audio reader has a great voice and intonation to incite and inform you. There is also a small gift shop there. One star was deducted for tiny toilets with no hooks for tourists' bags. Please expand on these very important objects. Thank you.

What a beautiful structure in the middle of the city. It is beautiful, it is big, it is strong, it is boastful. This fort is at its best. You can go in for a small price. You can see the interior and the medieval parts inside. The view from outside is also amazing. From different parts of the city, it looks really different. One of the most famous place in Ghent.

A gem of Ghent! The castle is a must see. You can book online or in person. It's a popular tourist site and if you book ahead of time you can skip the line. The guided audio tour was a riot! There is a ton of history at this castle and it's not to be missed!

This was the first location we visited in Gent and we couldn’t be happier with our choice! If you are visiting DO NOT miss out on the audioguides (included in the price of the ticket) - there isn’t much written information around the castle so not only are they essential to understanding the place’s history but they are wildly entertaining. I’m usually impatient with audio guides but I couldn’t help but listen to each point with this one - funny, engaging, well-written and delivered, a highlight of the experience in this beautiful castle.

Extremely scenic and well-kept little castle. Nice of them to make a fun audio-guide narrative out of what I imagine are mostly exaggerated stories. Takes half an hour to walk around, another half to sit, relax and absorb it's beauty.

Ideal place to visit with or without kids! The audiotour is funny and educational for kids while still being entertaining for adults. You get a great view of Ghent when you get to the top. We even saw staff fully dressed as knights taking pictures with kids. When you get a ticket for the 'Gravensteen' you get a free video tour of the 'Sint Pieters abdij' which is a couple minutes away, I would certainly recommend doing this as well!

Spent a brilliant afternoon here, enjoying the amazing castle and the wonderful accompanying audio guide! The audio tour was full of interesting facts and was really brought to life by the humour of the narrator. We were laughing constantly as we walked around. Some lovely views from the top too. Unexpectedly very funny! Not only the castle is beautiful and the story around it is interesting but they hired a comedian to record the audio-guide and it’s a brilliant idea! You can see that everyone is carefully listening to the guide and it makes the whole learning part of the experience so much easier when you’re not so much into the historical facts.

MUST SEE! The whole place is amazing - the castle is in good shape, everything is well preserved. You can see most of the castle, where you can find swords, knights armour and other weapons that were used. The audioguide is probably the best thing about it! You can easily follow the tour through numbers that are displayed around the place. The story is told with humour, guide feels more like a real person that lived there in medieval times, he has his own opinions and makes comments on certain matters. It gives an entirely different perspective on the whole experience! Also - top five deaths ranking? Amazing!

Pretty cool place, very nice you can just roam around at your own pace. Audio tour that you can follow of course. When I went there were time periods, and the day was completely booked. You can schedule online or there in person, there was availability the next day for me thankfully. The location is also pretty neat, as you are close to lots of places to eat and relax. Also, boat rides are here, and the one we went on gave us a water-side view of the castle as well, so that's another idea to get perspective.

Amazing tour with audio guides. Quite comical and engaging for all ages. Unfortunately, the castle is not accessible for those with walkers/wheelchairs. Still had to pay a full price ticket when my MIL could only sit in the garden and do the few steps up to the castle wall. She couldn’t do all the stairs into the castle. Still a great tour and amazing photo ops throughout. 🏰

I had a really nice visit to this place. I don’t think I can say much more compared to the other 21k reviews! But I will try. So here’s my update. The place is not that big, and it is ideal to get some history about Ghent and the castle. You can get an audio guide without extra cost that has about 25 stops. I spent there about 1h and I had listened to all of them, and stopped on every room! In a nutshell, you will see some old armory weapons and armors. You will walk through very well conserved and also refurbished different rooms. You can see a torture chamber when you go outside during the tour. Is not that big. There are some still in progress excavations or unidentified rooms below the castle that you can explore. They look in progress or recent, so no info about them. Regarding the audio guide, it is in multiple languages and it has a really nice storytelling. I believe there are about 25 stops that you can do in 1 hour or so. It has no extra cost. From the top, there’s a really nice view of the city, ideal for some photos! You can pay cash or card. There are guided tours, but you have to find out when are those. One fact that I learned during a guided tour: if you pay close attention to the wall stones outside, you will notice that multiple kinds of stones were used. The government rushed during the refurbishing and rebuilding of the castle and used whichever rock or stone they found. 😅 on my opinion it makes the castle loose a bit of its charm. Regardless, I really recommend to visit it

Fascinating history. We were so glad we had a chance to visit the castle but the audio tour could have been much better. It tried to entertain, and I understand that no one knows exactly what went on in each of the rooms, but the droning on about everything but the actual castle's history was a waste of time. Regardless, it's fun to wind up and down the staircases, imaging what it must have been like to live here. And we loved the armory and dungeon. There are lots of steps, but worth it for the great views from the top!

We visited here during the weekday, the views were outstanding. I would of given this 5 stars, however, due to the amount of stairs, this could be a put off for those not so steady on their feet / disabled. Also, the edging of the castle could benefit from some railing, as it is not very safe. We had to walk past a mother, with her child. If the child stepped backwards, we would of easily fallen off of the edge. I would also suggest parents to keep a close eye on their children. Despite the amount of stairs and the edging, this is the best castle I have visited. The staff were friendly & plenty of beautiful photos were taken. We purchased our tickets at the front desk, waiting in line all of 10 minutes. We toured the full castle, so much history to view. We also did a boat tour, which had taken us around the castle, which was breathtakingly picturesque.

My favourite part of our daytrip to Ghent. The audio tour was entertaining even though I usually prefer exploring without audio but it was included in the ticket price and was indeed a great addition as it felt like listening to a story. If you like history, Gravensteen is a must. Their audio tour is amazing and included in the entrance fee. You will get to walk to each room in the castle and in each room, the audio tour will describe what the room was for, what happened in there. The story is amazing but not too heavy to get you bored.

Castle is well perserved, and offers plenty of things for exploring. It is located in the middle of the city, which was convenient for us. I would advice you to buy tickets in advance. Time on the ticket should match the actual time when entering, otherwise they will not let you in (or maybe they would, but better to be on time). Nice views from the top.

What am interesting castle, or rather, not castle. It was built as a manor but used for lots of things, like as a factory, and was quite really a castle. It also advertised itself as a torture museum, but there's pretty much none of that there besides a small dungeon. The audio tour that comes with the ticket is full of sass and opinions from the narrator, best audio tour I've heard recently, really humorous.

The audio tour is narrated by a Belgian comedian, focusing on the lives of the people who lived in the castle and a light-hearted way that blends history and comedy. You can move through the castle at your own pace, instead of traipsing through with a guide. We were there on a late July weekday, and there were no crowds. I would highly recommend buying tickets online ahead of time though to avoid having to stand in line at the gate. While the castle isn't furnished, there is a torture chamber downstairs that still has some of the implements. Overall, this was a really interesting and fun to her of a really spectacular piece of medieval architecture that lets you get a glimpse into life in another era. Loved it!

After ceasing to be the residence of the counts of Flanders, the castle entered a decline. It was used as a court and prison until the 18th century. From 1353 to 1491, it was the site of Ghent's mint and private buildings were later constructed on or around the Medieval remains. During the Industrial Revolution, the Gravensteen was converted into a cotton mill by an industrialist who purchased the site. It was even scheduled for demolition. Parts of the castle were bought up gradually by the City of Ghent which began a major restoration in a romanticising Gothic style between 1893 and 1907 under the architect Joseph de Waele. De Waele was inspired the approach of the French architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and attempted to restore the castle to its imagined appearance in the 12th century. Many details added during this period, such as the flat roofs and the windows of the eastern outbuilding, are not thought to be historically accurate. The Gravensteen was the centrepiece of the Ghent World Fair of 1913 during which the city centre was significantly reshaped. It remains open to the public. In 1949, a group of college students from Ghent seized the castle and occupied it in protest of an increase in local beer taxes. The students pelted police besieging the castle with fruit. Eventually, they were removed from the premises. Due to popular support for the students from townsfolk, nobody was charged for the boozy rebellion. Wikipedia

This place is a must see! You can do the tour on your own, but be prepared to climb up and down a lot of steep concrete steps! The views at the top are incredible and SO worth the walking. They have signs to lead you to the next stop, and every room has information about what it served as. They also have old tools and chains to look at.

(Translated by Google) Tourist in your own city! Friendly service at the reception and in the shop. A super fun audio tour followed with Wouter Deprez as commentator. Especially when the weather is nice outside. It was cozy and pleasant, we enjoyed the beautiful views of Ghent and the nice stories. The stories are told in Dutch via a small mobile phone. The only thing that could be communicated about is the fact what has happened to the Castle of the Counts since the Middle Ages until now, or by whom or what it was still occupied and why certain choices were made or not. We missed some info there. The stories that are now being told are about things from the 15th and 16th centuries. What the top time was of course for the Gravensteen 🎉 It takes you about an hour to an hour and a half on the tour. Enjoy it! And then go and get a hot drink or snack at In Choc Gent. (Original) Toerist in eigen stad!

Probably my favourite sight in all of Ghent. While the entire city is picturesque, the Castle of the Counts does full justice to its name. I have actually been three times now and full credit to the management for the maintenance they carry out as well as the steps they have taken to make the visit far more interactive and interesting for people of all ages. Ghent can normally be visited in 1-3 days (take your pick) but make sure that you do not miss this particular place because it is pretty much the point from which the entire city developed in the 12th century.

A fun early morning visit including a stunning audio tour. The castle has been impeccably maintained considering that it's a12th century relic. This Gothic style castle may not have a lo of intricate work as compared to other similar architectural landmark but has a very strong history behind it. An audio guide is much recommended to compliment your tour and an early visit makes it easier to navigate the full extent of the tour without fatigue. Do remember to check your headphones before stepping off from the counter. Do make the effort to pull yourself up till the roof. There are some great city views possible from there.

Wonderful tour, large castle and a funny Audioguide that explains the history in an entertaining way. Didn’t expect that. Beautiful view over the city. Hopefully we will be able to come again in a few years. My recommendation for everybody who likes castles and history. The full hour takes some time but it is worth it. No waiting times, but specific time slots. Partly outside. Didn’t book tickets in advance which was no problem.

Beautiful castle and very popular so they seem to have a limit of people to enter and when we arrived they were selling tickets for the next hour and at 4 they were not selling more tickets so plan ahead accordingly. Also make sure you get the audioguide at the entrance as inside the castle is completely empty so you mainly see rooms and the structure.

Hands down the best audio tour I’ve ever had!! Maybe not the “best” in terms of dry history and most widely spanning factual, but still informative and super fun, different, and engaging to listen to. Be sure to look at the screen right after each sound bite - there’s a fun little visual with your rabbit tour guide matching the story you’ve just been told. Great view from the top and generally speaking a pretty cool “little” castle. Honestly, I don’t even know how much time we spent in the castle, but I definitely feel like it was worth it. Listened to every stop of the tour. Don’t think I’ve ever done that before… oh, and the audio tour is free when you’ve paid the entry fee.

The tour of Count Phillips castle was fascinating and surprisingly entertaining. The audio guide narration was informative, funny and painted a great portrait of life in this castle. The history of the region really came to life in the stories and exhibits of the castle. On top of this the views of the city were amazing from the top of the towers. I have to warn you though. There are a lot of stairs and some are quite steep so 8f you have mobility issues you should probably skip the tour.

It’s a must visit when in Ghent. The medieval fortress was very well maintained. The ticket includes an audio guide which offers multiple languages. It appears Ghent really welcomes international tourists. The audio guide is well curated with a touch of humor to tell the story of the history of the castle and its former owner. The tour follows a well organized and clearly directed route. At the end it leads you to the top of the fortress which provides a fantastic bird’s eye view to the charming city of Ghent. Allow yourself a 60-90 minutes for the visit.

A must-visit castle in Ghent! The voice guides helped us to carry on with the tour of the castle at our own place. Watching the interior of the castle while following it’s story was quite interesting. The views from the top of the castle were beautiful. The place is also surrounded by restaurants and cafés, which makes it a great touristic spot. Overall, definitely recommended, if one is visiting Ghent!

After visiting countless museums and castles, this one will be remembered best. As a history freak, I was loving every step of it. The castle was already beautiful, an amazing view and much more. And to top it? The audio was great. It was not boring. As someone with adhd I often only listen to half of it but here I was focused all the time. It had a very interactive way of presenting the museum, while making it very knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend, with or without kids

Wonderful experience. The museum on it’s own is not mind blowing but when you pair it with the storytelling of the audio guide is superb. One of the best experiences I ever had. This is a good example on how to go extra mile to tuen something good in superb. Can’t recommend it more 🤪🎉

It was a beautiful experience, the view of the city from the top of the castle is wonderful. I liked the place a lot and the scene of hummer they use in telling you the story of the castle is very nice and appealing. Gravensteen Castle is one of the major attraction points for tourists. It's old and beautiful Of course it gives an eerie feeling no doubt it has a dark history attached to it.... As the guide shared Gravensteen's name refers to a castle that is made out of stone. From the time of 1180 till roughly 1353 Gravensteen housed several counts of Flanders, that's how its other name is 'Castle of Counts'. It's good to buy the tickets in advance. It would cost 12 euro for adults, don't forget to take the free audio guide when you start the tour

  • 5/5 Sue N. 10 months ago on Google

Your ticket will also include an audio guide which you must use - one of the best audio guides I have experienced, super informative yet funny! Here you are taken on a fascinating journey through medieval times and learn a little bit about the history of the Counts of Flanders.

Chain mail casting deep shadows on stone wall of The Gravensteen (Castle of the Counts), Ghent Belgium The castle and the surrounding moats are great for photos throughout the day but inside is also not to be missed. It gets creepy and freaky nearing the torture chambers but the chain mail on the wall and its shadow are pretty iconic. A wide and fast lens will do wonders here

The castle is built on a mound and is surrounded by a moat. It has a central keep, which is 70 feet tall, and a number of other buildings, including a chapel, a prison, and a dungeon. The castle is known for its torture chambers, which are now on display to the public.

This castle makes the difference between Brugge and Gent! • 5/5 Jane T. 7 months ago on Google
Visited this beautiful castle and was blown away by the building itself and the spectacular views you have access to. Had an audio aid that was useful for getting factual information with a humorous edge and really enjoyed it. The one important thing to know before visiting is that there are a lot of stone spiral stairs to climb up and down so be aware they are quite narrow and steep. Also some places are quite slippery due to the stone being worn smooth. There are toilets and a souvenir shop here and I thought it worth the €13 per person individual tour. Check prices and book tickets online during busy times although we did not have to queue today.

  • 5/5 Wouter 7 months ago on Google
Very cool and good looking castle in the middle of the city. Although some voice memos are kind of long it is a very smart idea to give everyone a device with which they can listen to a tour. However, i am not sure if i am incapable or blind, but the route seemed fairly vague. Anyhow, even though it was very warm, i had a good time here!

  • 4/5 Katie K. 5 months ago on Google
Considering it was raining very heavily, I enjoyed going round the castle. There is a lot of rooms inside thankfully. Audio guides were good but could have included more history and fewer jokes. The outer wall had no hand rails and we did worry that people and especially children could fall, the drop is quite considerable.

  • 4/5 Vinnie I. 6 months ago on Google
A fascinating castle let down by an over zealous audio guide. I'm generally a big fan of audio guides but the attempted comedic guide here ends up being overly long, light on facts, and often rife with incorrect information. I appreciate the opportunity to take your time seeing the castle, especially as some of the stairways can be quite steep and tiring, but I would have appreciated a way to learn more without having to parse someone trying to make jokes. Still definitely worth a visit just to see such a terrifically recreated medieval castle and the fantastic views from the top. You can even grab an audio guide (for free!) but feel free to set it down when you have your fill and just enjoy the view.

In one word Amazing! This castle is beautiful, the museum inside and the audioguide are fantastic. The audioguide is made by a comedian and is just brilliant with a lot of humour. The castle and the museum inside are extremely interesting to see and the audioguide guides you through all the different rooms. The view from the top is also amazing.

Gravensteen Castle is a great morning out and a should be on everyone’s list when visiting Ghent. Especially in December when it’s given more depth with festive decorations. A must is the audio guide, full of info, wit and dry humour - found myself laughing throughout

Beautiful castle both on the outside and inside and well maintained. The audioguide, mixes both history and some funny stories so is not getting boring and is easier to digest them. We visited during Christmas so each room had also decoration to add on the atmosphere. The ticket costs 13 euro for adults and the audioguide is included.

Fun audio tour (a lot of dark humour, and some swearing, so if you're easily offended, you might want to skip it, but I had a blast). Probably not really suitable for people with mobility issues - lots of spiral staircases, uneven cobblestone courtyard, and I didn't see ramps.

Highly recommend picking up the audio guide (free with entry) as the narrator was highly engaging and hilarious to listen to as you walk through the walls of the castle. The rocks of the castle was also incredibly fascinating and if you have time, do examine them in search of fossils and proof of the carbonate shelf that Belgium is. It should be noted that there is a student price for entry (on presentation of a valid ID). Go before lunch though - the wait is a lot shorter and the site is less busy.

Very nicely conserved castle from the middle ages. Very funny but also informative audio tours available in many languages. Worth while to visit during your stay in Ghent. Ticket price 13 euro.
