A gem on Armenian Street. If you want to see masterpieces in batik just step in. Colours, patterns, humans, nature, modern interpretations, they are all there. Spread over three floors, this beautifully laid out museum features the work of artists from Malaysia and abroad. There's also an informative video you can watch. The host was warm, friendly and welcoming and made our visit worthwhile.

Great exhibitions, really beautiful artwork. Explanations are given for each piece, which really helps you to appreciate the artwork. The gentleman who works there is very nice, and there are all the amenities you need to make your visit comfortable - plenty of seating, clean bathrooms and fans. I would definitely recommend, especially for 10 RM

Such a nice and quiet place to hang out while viewing the painting. This place is more like a gallery and it really is classic! As an art lover, i really enjoyed this place and the best part is we did received a complimentary postcard when we paid for the entrance fee 😍

Armenia Street in Penang piqued my curiosity the most as one wanders and wonders, how did Armenians end up here? This vibrant stretch has 13 wall arts (much like how Banksy would do it). I was not OC enough to check off all 13 on my list for FOMO but rather had a more laidback mindset. If I chance upon it, then that is the beauty of the discovery, like stumbling upon the Batik Painting Museum, which offers a cool respite on a hot humid day. A virtual shrine to the father of modern Batik Painting, Chuah Thean Teng, by an art patron who was an elementary student of his when he was teaching art then. The lady of the house kindly sat by and gave a first hand account of his works while I watched a short video that showed the painstaking process of creating a brilliant piece by layering wax and creating gradations of colours from light to dark. Going back to my curiosity of the Armenians, the curator then shared a story of how they were brought because they were skilled workers who worked on the grand Eastern & Oriental Hotel (a must see for architecture buffs along Jalan Farquhar). Alas, none remained but the street is named where they resided before. Walking further, drop by the Ming Xiang Tai pastry shop, its a must.. for the best flaky buttery mind-altering pastry of sweet and savoury - try the chicken floss with lotus paste. Hint: an artwork of a boy and girl reaching for a basket adorns it’s wall outside. End the day with curry mee and iced lemon tea at White Coffee Penang or peruse the night market at Chulia Street.

If art painting isnt artistic /tough enough, imagine painting in a piece of clothing with great attention to detail that created these masterpieces on display here. Truly mesmorised by what I have witnessed here. Rm10 entry ticket price per person. Slowly bide your time to immerse yourself the incredible feat of what amazing humans are capable of.

We found this Batik museum by accident and went in to take a look. Tickets weren't expensive. We were shown a video on how Batik was made with much time and effort, each color had to be dyed separately and the painter had to apply wax to waterproof undesired area. I found it really interesting how similar Batik is to the African cloth dye trade even though the two countries are so far apart. The place wasn't that big, you can probably finish it in 15 mins if you aren't an art person. Take some time to appreciate the different paintings up close and marvel at how intricate each art piece is.

Absolutely wonderful museum! I never was exposed to Batik before and wondered what could be so special about it compared to a brush and canvas, but seeing the fine detail, depth and texture this method gives made the reason obvious. I wish they had much more space and less reflective glass covers, but overall, fantastic!

The museum has a unique take as it brings local and international artists that uses batik medium to create art. There is an entrance fee between RM10-RM15. If I’m not mistaken and if you are a student you can get RM5 for the entry.

Nice staff who put on informative video just for me and 1 other person in the gallery. 3 levels of beautiful Batik paintings, a true Malaysian discovery for me! The museum is not that big but worth a visit if you want to learn about a traditional art form :)

Really insightful experience, for art appreciators. It is a museum of exquisite art pieces by famous artists, meant for viewing purposes - the exhibited paintings are not for sale, though there are prints and other batik paintings for sale. This isn't a batik museum about the history of batik patterns on clothing. As explained by the staff, there is a difference between the commercialised batik pattern printing on cloth, and batik painting as a wax-and-dye art technique. The owner established the museum for the purpose of educating the public on the niche art form, and unique culture and history of Batik painting in Penang, Malaysia - which unknown to many, is apparently the first known origin of painting using the batik technique. There are no batik classes at the moment, though the owner is considering adding that in the future. Set on Armenian Street a few doors down from the famous bicycle mural, this museum is a gem for art lovers.

If you are an art lover, this place is a must go! A lovely uncle is very helpful to let you know the basics of the batik painting, and he let you watch the video about it (about 5-10mins I remember), then you can see all the art works from local artists to international artists exhibited on 1st to 3rd floor! It was such a great time and I definitely fell in love with batik painting!

Small art gallery over three floors with some beautiful artworks. The skills shown by some of the artists are amazing (check out how batik is done on youtube is you havent seen it).

I enjoyed looking at the paintings, there’s a good variety and evidently a lot of talented artists. It would be nice if the museum provided some information on how batik painting works, but to be fair other art museums don’t usually explain the process behind artwork e.g. oil paintings

The Batik Paintings are very impressive as is the collection in the three story gallery in the heart of Georgetown. The directors were there when I visited and they are passionate and offer a wealth of information. Well worth a visit.

A small spot with various batiks dating from 100 years ago. More of a gallery, but it's worth a visit if you like this art. An older man was working and was very happy to explain the art and a bit of history to me.

Fantastic place to explore the art of batik. Our tour guide, Charissa, has a great knowledge on the backgrounds of each art piece, 88/8 would recommend

What a cool museum of batik art. Every art have their own story and meaning. The entree fees is worth the price. What I enjoy the most is the layout and the art is so authentic. At first I never expect there is batik museum but when I got into it I just said wow it is 3 storey museum so a lot of art painting inside it.

A small world class gem of a museum. 100 “paintings” by batik masters going back to the 1950’s, representing a range of artistic styles, representational thru abstract. But what is stunning is that many of the “color planes” in a normal painting are finely crafted batik textile patterns and colors. Gorgeous. For me it was reminiscent of Matisse, but taken to another level.

If you are interested in this form of art then there is a wonderful selection of paintings. Very informative video explaining the process of Batik painting. It is a truly aaazing process that goes into making these works of art. It's a private collection so there is a very small entrance fee well worth it.

Amazing place to learn about batik painting. An art that receives in my opinion far too less recognition. Beautiful exhibition right in the heart of Armenian street.

Went on a weekday afternoon, the place was rather empty. Got the student price of RM5/student. The place is a private collection from Dr Tan Chong Guan, featuring batik pieces from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, China (and Thailand if I'm not mistaken) in a 3-storey shophouse. Was surprised that we were allowed to take photos. Started off with a 20 minute video featuring artist Chuah Thean Teng and the process of making the batik. Following that, we were free to roam around the house by ourselves. The descriptions are not always informative, but they are definitely funny at times. The batik were in an interesting variety of styles.
