Had the pleasure chatting with the founder, Nigel and learnt some interesting facts about the history of this shop. 1. There is a painting by the entrance taken over 150 years ago of Beach Street and one taken recently (hung in middle of the shop). Check it out! 2. There wooden beams on the roof of the shop is original from over 100 years ago. Survived both World Wars. Was one of the few remaining shops standing that survived the bombings. You will notice the shops next to it is built further in (they didn’t survive bombings) and by requirements when rebuilt are further in from the street. 3. Had one of the tastiest and most delicious pasta: Truffle Alfredo Pasta. Try it and believe me. It’s the best. If u do, give me a thumbs up for this review. Else, challenge this review. 😆 The owners are sometimes managing the shop themselves. Check if they are in, as they are well trained from the Melbourne school of coffee and can probably elevate your coffee connoisseur experience. 😊

I wanted to try this place, but to my surprise it was an horror. Checked in for breakfast at 11.20am. A few table occupied at that time. Took a while to check on the menu mainly because theres not much to order (mostly N/A). We ordered caeser salad, poke bowl and croissant sandwich. Coffee of coz. Coffee came 1st. After 45mins of wait. I went and check for our order. The waiter said to check and siad that its on the way. We waited again and this time asked the guy waiter and he said its preparing and they are plating. Just refer to my pics here, they took 45mins to serve me this!

Surprisingly big and really nice designed place! Have a big and good choice of cakes, croissants. Good coffee and you can also have dinner / lunch here. Small choice, but enough. Therefore I would take this as a quality sign. In addition the coffee is really good as well

Let's talk about the good things first. - Service: the staff is nice and friendly - Atmostphere: spacious and quiet cafe. A good place if you wanna sit for long hours to work. They have plug points at many seating areas. Now the ugly truths. - Food: don't be deceived by the photos on the menu. 1. Omega Feast - the dish came with 4 slices of white bread hidden underneath (which was not written in the description or shown in the menu). Clearly we didn't touch the bread at all. It looks pathetic. The poached eggs were hard and rough. The whole dish was pretty bland. 2. Tartine - the sourdough was so dense and mushy. I don't even know how to describe it. It's just bad. - Price: it's definitely on the high side for the quality of food that they serve.

Came here on Google's recommendation as it was in the top 10 cafes to visit. I can say it was definitely not the best experience I've had. Croissant came cold, flat and not even crispy, we asked for it to be warmed up but it came back only 2°C warmer. It's extremely disappointing when you have a sign posted outside that you have the best pastry in town only to have cold, tough and flat pastries Drinks were disappointing as well. Ice latte was weak and barely has any coffee taste. My wife ordered the chocolate matcha and you taste the ingredients separately rather than a harmonious taste Lastly, service was very slow. I understand that there were many customers, though I'm only seeing one girl running the floor. The man, who greeted us at the door, barely speaks English and only stays at the front. 3 people behind the bar and not one even comes out to help the poor girl running solo Only saving grace was the ragu spaghetti which was better than everything else we ordered. Money could have been better spent elsewhere

Stopped here for a cup of coffee after a heavy breakfast. A very nice and cozy place with loads of delicious looking pastries. Wished I wasn’t so full that I couldn’t try some. Will swing by again later to check it out. The flat white and double espresso were good!

Food is nice and environment is relatively quiet and conducive for conversations or work. Staffs are responsive to requests. There's plenty of tea selections which can be refilled upon request. I particularly liked the chicken main dish. There's also a wide pastry selection, though I wish there were more varieties. An improvement would be cleaner toilets but that's not enough to influence the 5-star rating this place deserves. Kitchen closing time for dinner is 6.30 which is very early for dinner. Edit: I think they changed the closing time!

We stumbled across The Black Kettle while on holiday in Penang. Honestly the chicken Rendang was THE most delicious and flavourful dish EVER. It was that special we came back the following day and ordered it again! It’s very popular and had sold out but the very kind waitress had mentioned to the chef we had returned and she made it for us. How amazing. I would HIGHLY recommend visiting as they do amazing juices and desserts and a tempting array of giant filled croissants with some very delicious and unique flavours. The staff are all very friendly and helpful and it’s such an amazing space inside with a variety of areas to dine from little nooks, large shared eating spaces and areas to eat and work. I can’t recommend this place enough! Thank you to everyone at The Black Kettle for your delicious food and very warm welcome. ❤️❤️

Food taste : Quite good. Tried the fish, fried calamari with curry leaves, spaghetti, matcha blender and hot macha (dont really remember the specific names but I got pictures though 😊. There are also pastries and cakes available. Pro: The deco and ambiance was nice to chill with family or friends. Those like to take pics probaby like this place too. Cons : Its by the roadside so no place to park your car. Not sure if there was place to park nearby but probably does or just use ehailing service

It's my third visit since the first a few years back. Don't get me wrong. Nothing to do with the food. Simply because the pocket hurts =P Well, that's because this place serves dishes that're really pleasant to your taste buds compared to averag-ish western food choices in other cafes. Also, their Aussie Iced Caffe Latte is second to none on the island. Initially I was hesitated to order because it's priced at RM18, but my gawd, the first sip blew me away. It could taste a tad sweet, however, for people without a sweet tooth. The cafe is spacious and has a lightwell, making it a great place for catch-ups. There are also local reads about Penang's history for sale =) No comments about the presentable bakeries and confectionaries as I haven't tried them. I'm keeping that one star for their room of improvement. 'Cause I hope that they'll lower the food price or come up with affordable dishes that are good as the ones on the menu =P

Lovely cafe with a good selection of meals, pastries and bread. It’s a place where I would love to just bring a laptop and work for hours while enjoying a few cups of coffee. The burger is just alright but the fish n chips had pretty generous servings. Can’t wait to stop by again the next time I am in Georgetown 😄

This place is friendly with the staff and very welcoming to us. We always come back. Recently realized they changed the menu presentation and the French fries got more flavor now than they did before. I am a content creator/art director and when we noticed the change I was impressed. Thank you for the hospitality, good coffee and nice WiFi

Atmosphere is great. A lot of socket plugs available for laptops & chargers. There is a small performance corner for gig shows as well. There are tables fit for different groups, from 2 pax up to big group of 8-10. Parking is hard to find as usual since its the middle of Georgetown Heritage site. Food overall is nice, I definitely recommend the BK periperi chicken 👌 I tried the salmon spinach pie, it has a unique flavour though it's a bit dry. Pumpkin soup is dense & creamy 👌

You will be greeted with an entire display case of delicious looking croissants upon entering the cafe. The overall ambiance was great and I love the facade of the place. I tried the almond chocolate croissant, which tasted delicious. The açai bowl was good as well. Good place to chill and relax or to hide from Georgetown’s scorching sun. Accurate as of August 2023.

A premium coffee joint in Penang - we wanted to go somewhere a bit upmarket for brunch and were pleased with the decor and space. Even the way the food was presented on the plate was attractive to eat. However, the food just wasn't up to par and it was below average. I had a chicken burger and fries but the texture of the chicken wasn't pleasant to eat. The fries were nice but that's it. They have a nice bakery section but again, the food is average at best and for this reason, it's overpriced.

Good ambience and atmosphere. You will find the food is surprisingly nice. The pasta is delectable and make me want to have second dishes. The lunch set meal is quite worth it. Soup of day with main course and a dessert only cost RM30+. The mushroom soup is palatable. Sourdough and croissant are available too. The place is spacious compare to other cafe. The only downside is the car park. Have to find own car park and walk there.

Especially like the deco and it’s spacious environment. Really cozy. The food was really good though the price of cake gave me a small shock that I felt it was kinda pricy for its size. I felt the berth cushion seat is a bit too low for the table. I always love the restaurants put the WiFi pw either at a prominent spot or straight on the table 🤭 the WiFi here was also good speed 😌

Great food and vibes! The Ayam Penyet was incredible. Roasted to perfection. You’d have to wait for around 20 mins though. The Pesto Pasta was incredible too. Macarons aren’t too sweet… and their peppermint latte is great! Service is incredible! Staff was really friendly!

Had a seafood bouillabaisse and avocado matcha milkshake, waited 23 mins for the bouillabaisse, which was just slightly warm. The avocado matcha milkshake was nice, though I also waited 10 minutes for the drink. My lunch mate had oxtail stew with rice (only coconut rice) which was pretty nice as the beef was very tender. They seemed to have pretty nice croissants, wanted to try but was rather turned off by the wait. Perhaps will be back to have the almond croissant, avocado matcha milkshake and oxtail stew. Price is subject to service charge and gst. —————————————————————- I was back for the avocado matcha milkshake and almond croissant, just wanted to fulfill my craving on my last day in Penang, and I did not regret. The croissant was buttery, not dry, not flaky, and topped with generous serving of almond flakes 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩.

Coffee was nice. Nice cafe/restaurant inside. We ordered breakfast, sourdough with toppings. The portions were incredibly small, barley any avocado on the toast and the poached egg wasn't cooked (the white was still a bit runny). The food was edible but not what I would expect for the price.

High-ceiling, modern and spacious, I can imagine groups of friends catching up with one another in this space. The cafe has powerplugs and free Wi-Fi, encouraging for the loungers and family goers alike. The food was average, matcha latte sub-par, and service speed was very slow. It took us a good half an hour before food was served, and another half an hour just to get attention for our pre-ordered dessert. I would say it was a nice place to pop-in for the chill atmosphere. 🤘 Don't go in anticipating good food.

Service needed to be more energetic. My pumpkin soup is good by adding a little lemon juice into it. The atmosphere is quite quiet which is suitable for me. Just really too pricey for a pumpkin soup n a cup of latte white.. They were cost about Rm 35 in total... Anyhow my list is checked.

Ambience: Good environment and vibe. Spacious and comfortable. Food: Poulet roti- 45min waiting time. Chicken is well seasoned, juicy and very tender. The sauce has some touch of unique taste. Good for 2 person. If service can include the cutting of chicken, then that would be even great. Truffle Alfredo- Finger licking good. Truffle scent is just nice. Slight touch of cheese make the whole dish even more delectable and captivate you to order another round. Flat white+Cappuccino: not too much milk and not too much coffee. The blend is just nice. Great coffee. Service: Warm, attentive and very polite. Well trained Price: Worth the penny. Things to improve: Should pay some attention on toilet as well. If this part is covered, then everything would be perfect.

Pretty decent cafe with good tasting food and coffee. Ordered vanilla French toast and blue cappuccino. The toast can be more 'vanilla' imo, but the coffee looks and tastes good. Classic nutty flavor with caramel on top. Also the fruits taste fresh and sweet. Environment can get a bit warm when sunny. Good experience overall.

I asked for a hot latte. I really got a hot latte to sip and not a warm or luke-warm latte. That's a winner for me and it came with a cookie. I ordered a salad and asked if they could add chicken and they did. I don't usually like balsmatic dressing but this was just right and not too tart. The salad also had radishes, oranges, tomatoes and I was so happy to see red and green lettuce! There is so much lovely space and areas here that I am so relaxed I don't want to leave. I just started on my 2nd latte in an actual glass! Oh and buy the way, check my photo out of free filtered water cold and room temperature with nice water cups - not paper.

I ordered: - Tiramisu canelé Slightly better than the usual one, still okay - Vanilla canelé (Usual one with alcohol) The worst, don't have any good aroma of rum, instead, it tastes like it has been placed in refrigerator for few days. The texture is also not right, which makes it taste worse. And both are not crispy at all! - Hot Latte Still okay, nothing special Interior design and atmosphere here is good. More of a place for insta.

COFFEE and PASTRY review only. Their chillout sometimes almost eery music ambiance got me biased, love it and wasn't too loud. I would totally see myself work for hours here thanks to electric plugs available. Staff was very friendly, it's sad we have to specifically mention this but it's not the case in all coffee/bar/restaurant as you probably realized already or you will soon. The coffee: I went for espresso as usual when trying a new place, it's the hardest technically, no milk or sugar to hide your mistakes. The good news is it wasn't bad, and that's already an achievement in espresso. Now the price (8RM) is very honest compared to other places and I've had way worse of espresso for almost 15RM. It seems to be a traditional dark roast with the usual bitter, chocolatey notes, that will please everyone but won't surprise coffee nerds. They have bean bags of lighter roast to sell.. maybe ask if you can chose something spicy? I would still be happy to pull this shot on a first try at home so no worries, 4/5 stars. The bakery: it has been said in other reviews, yes it's expensive, yes it's delicious. The cake portion is generous however and I don't feel robbed, mission succeeded, 4/5 stars because damn the price though.

Lunch menu is not ‘lunch friendly’ and took ages for food to be served. I ordered the lasagna and was not told in advance that it’ll take more than 30mins to be served, this is with other mains n dishes all finished by then. The menu looked promising but execution was utterly disappointing. I guess there’s a reason why other cafes are packed and this one is not. Will not be coming back.

I understand that the best thing on your menu was the truffle oil Mac and cheese and it was my fault for not trying it. But when you’re charging RM 20 ++ for 3 crab rice paper rolls, at least use real crab. Y’know ? 🥲 Otherwise the coffee was not bad.
