Awful and upsetting. Ruined the holiday. I came once in 2018 and recently in 2022 and the standard has dropped dramatically. Falls far below a 4 star standard, almost unbearable to stay in. 1. Very Dirty rooms - thick and black mould and stains on sink and shower - dusty, dirty floor carpets and corners - mattress corners heavily stained with brown blood? stains - our ‘fresh’ towels were grey or stained with black spots 2. Room service staff stole our belongings. We requested to change rooms after the front desk staff got our bed choices wrong, left a personal water bottle in the first room. When we changed we immediately went down to ask if we could go back in to take our bottle. Staff said they will find it for us but said they could not find it in any of the rooms. Second instance was when we were preparing to check out. We realize that a fabric shopping bag we had was missing. We clearly left it in the room. We went down to request the staff to find it. We came back some hours later and the staff found it in the room service office and returned it to us. This is outright theft. 3. Rude service I requested for 2 king beds and got twins instead. I went down to request a change and was treated with impatience. The front desk insisted that I said I wanted twins. They changed my room in the end but their attitude was quite poor. 4. Gym was small and insufficient in terms of equipment, it was also inaccessible. Pool is full of green mould.

Best place to stay in town. The hotel hv swimming pool and gym. Nice room (however it's quite small), thanks God it's clean. (View from my room was not really nice but still acceptable) Foods at the restaurant very nice during breakfast. Plus their staff was very helpful.

It's worth staying here. Nearby to the attraction spot, just walking distance. Surrounded by heritage buildings even the hotel building itself. Good breakfast buffet provided here. Clean & comfortable room with partial port view because this hotel is really nearby to the jetty & port. We came here by bike & felt safe to park because parking was guarded by security guards 24 hours. Easy & fast check in out too. Overall we were very satisfied to stay here.

Disappointing stay! We were here for a family vacation and booked 3 rooms. Upon check-in, the receptionist who we later found out was the manager told us that our request to have 2 out of 3 booked rooms to be connected rooms will not be accommodated. We told him that we are returning customers and to our surprise he unprofessionally replied: “Returning customers or not, there is no difference” So apparently loyalty means nothing to their own management. We were then assigned to rooms on the same floor which we happily accepted but the condition of the rooms were sad to say the least. See pictures for untidy housekeeping and stains on bedding. In addition to that, the rooms that we were given on the 5th floor were very noisy during the day (we thought it was just maintenance and would be over in the evening). To our surprise, when we returned after dinner, the noise was still there (refer to video). We went down to reception and informed them of this and the night staffs were surprised that these rooms even got assigned to guests as they were supposed to be blocked due to the noise issues coming from the ballroom’s compressor units. Kudos to the night staffs who reassigned us to new rooms on a different floor. Overall, take your money elsewhere as there are better hotels within the same price range in Penang especially when their own manager displayed unprofessional behaviour.

I had mixed feelings about the experience staying there. What I love was the attentive front desk who did his best to be friendly and helpful. I can see they are under staffed. I see the same person day and night. The beds and pillows are big and comfortable, fit for a king and they have very nice art pieces though I felt needed some touching up. I also love feeling I get at the lobby and in the room. Very cosy and comfy. Here are some things I hope the management, can look into and improve. In terms of facilities, there are a lot of work to be done. The gym was not available due to maintenance. I notice a drop in hygiene and cleanliness, the pool felt dirty, looked slightly yellow and smelt sour. I noticed small details on the room that showed they had insufficient cleaners. The rooms were comfy however I feel it had not been used in a long time. There was a smell when I entered the room. However, when as I stayed longer and I believe the air could flow, the smell was less noticeable. The buffet was alright. Not impressed but at the same time not underwhelming. It had just enough. I know that the hotel industry has really suffered and it takes time to recuperate and start gaining back it's past glory. However, I am hopeful that the next time I come and get better service.

Great place to stay as it is near to everything. My room was good too - very spacious, the bed was comfy and the toilet big! The only problem was that there was no space for cars to make a proper exit after dropping passengers at the lobby. Cars had to make an awkward u-turn to exit.

-Travelled all the way from kl to penang but couldnt check in on time because the room was not ready. Wt type of service is it? The check in time suppose to be 3pm but our room was only ready at 6pm, this is total unprofessional behaviour for a such a famous hotel brand in Malaysia. -During parking the guard told got free parking for guest at level 2 but ended up i had to drive till the top floor but no free parking instead(information given not valid), cant u guys even provide one parking spot for guest who's travelling all the way ? - In the room , i was not provided with bathing towel, even after request i had to call again to request for my towel! - My bed comforter was not clean at all ,it has stains on it I wouldnt even rate 1 start for this place and i wouldnt recommend anyone to stay hereafter

Thanks for the great service won't be back again no matter how, was arrived at 11.45am 4/11/2021, was told the room is not ready yet, which I understand.. And we went for a walk back again at 4pm the line for check in is very long, 20minute later, I have been told the room is still not ready yet, and I request to talk to the manager, 10minute later manager show up and the answer he give is I don't know when will you can get the room.. And if you can wait then you wait if not I will refund it to you.. Which mean take your money and get lost.. There is at least 30 family around lobby, lounge, and cafe siting waiting for check in.. Some of us travel far to this hotel many of us come with kids and older people, how irresponsible.. This is serious issues. And I will not stay in in hotel anymore no matter how.. If any of you wanted to try rude and bad service hotel.. Please try!

random holiday on last January. We decided to go on vacation in penang and stay at royale chulan penang. once you enter the hotel you’ll feel relaxed immediately because the fragrance is filled with aromatherapy. We love fragrances so much so, we fell in love at first sight. the rooms are very spacious and luxurious, very comfortable. The bed size also the real king size bed it’s so big for three person (me, my husbnd and my son). Royale chulan penang also has strategic location in the middle of the historical city of Georgetown. the location is great for a leisurely walk. Breakfast varies from Malay, Asian, to Western food. The pool is huge located between the building so eventough swim during the day we’re not getting sunburn. My son really like to swim there. hotel staff also very helpful despite the different culture which is a bit stiff. overall stay here is very satisfied even it still rings in our heads the smell of the hotel. too bad we forgot to ask what aromatherapy l they use 😅 . liburan secara acak pada januari lalu. saya, suami serta anak saya memutuskan untuk berlibur di penang dan menginap di royale chulan penang. begitu masuk hotel yang terasa langsung relax karena wangi dipenuhi aromaterapi. kami sangat menyukai wewangian jadi kami jatuh cinta pada pandangan pertama. kamarnya sangat luas dan mewah, sangat nyaman. lokasi strategis berada di tengah kota historis georgetown. lokasi nya sangat bagus untuk berjalan santai. sarapan bervariasi mulai dari makanan melayu, asia, hingga barat. staff hotel juga sangat membantu meskipun berbeda budaya yang agak sedikit kaku. secara keseluruhan menginap di sini sangat puas bahkan masih terngiang di kepala kami wangi hotelnya. sayang sekali kami lupa menanyakan aromaterapi apa yang digunakan 😅

Great small size hotel but with big hospitality. Good facilities but only managed to use the swimming pool. Just put a night there after wedding dinner. Too much eat and drink. The next day, continue eating. Can't resist the wonderful breakfast from east to west.

Very disappointed and surprised that this still remains as a 4-star hotel. Room was incredibly run down. The moment we opened the door, we were greeted by an onslaught of a musty scent. Furnitures are dated and old, which is understandable. But what was not is the state of cleanliness. There were hair on the bed, and the carpet edges were filled with dirt and dust. The toilet door could not close and there were stains randomly on the wall. Our room also faced the pool directly so we could not open up the curtains. We checked out late at night to another cheaper No star hotel that was in a far cleaner and newer state than this. Spend your money elsewhere until they renovate and fix the rooms.

I booked 2 Deluxe bedrooms for 2 nights, check-in on 4 November 2021 and check-out on 6 November 2021. We arrived for check-in at 2.40 pm and we were told that the rooms were not ready and that they would be ready after 3.00pm. By 4.00 pm, the rooms were still not ready. The queues were long and there were guests all over the ground floor waiting to get their rooms. When we asked, we were told that "ALL the rooms were not ready." When we asked how long would it take to get them ready, we were further told. "We really do not know how long it will take." A Manager came down and said as-a-matter-of-factly, "If you want to wait, you can wait. Otherwise, we will give you a refund." The same statement was repeated to a few other guests, including me. I was even suggested to go and look for another hotel, All this while, there were only 2 personnel at the front desk, rushing to check everyone in, but unable to let anyone have their rooms, or give any kind of assurance that we would be getting our rooms any time soon. The Front Desk Personnel even said, "This is the first time this has happened. We didn't expect this." and "We were having full house yesterday and some of our guests haven't checked out yet .... at close to 5.00 pm!" At 5.00pm, 2.00 hours after checking-in and not getting my room, I decided to ask for a refund and leave for another hotel. Even then, I was just told to call a certain Ms Khoo of Finance on Monday, 8 November 2021 to follow up on the refund. No written note, just a verbal suggestion and a Royal Chulan blank business card with 'Khoo' handwritten on it. I have had many experiences checking in to hotels around the world, but his experience is by far the worst I have ever had. The Royale Chulan Penang was and is just not ready to open for business and influx of guests. They should have anticipated the Public Holiday crowd and take necessary preparatory actions to face it. Sorry, The Royale Chulan Penang is now on my blacklist. Note: I quickly booked another similar-rated hotel nearby through Agoda, got 2 rooms, checked-in and got my rooms within 5 minutes of check-in.

Access road to the main entrance easily missed from the main road. It is via a small back lane. Rooms and facilities have excellent lay-out. Front desk reception n the concierge are excellent. Room is clean and well appointed with nice white n blue wall tiles. However some fittings lack maintenance; towel hook fell off n wardrobe doors hang lose, appear in danger of falling off! Toiletries provided are a little meagre. Perhaps "bean counting" cost saving taken too far ? Towels appeared "worn off". Bed n pillow paltry. We had to run out of our room; bare footed, upon hearing the fire alarm. Access doors with "Fire Escape" signs were locked. Only to be told it was a false alarm! Management clearly inadequate. Walk ways had no aircond, warm n humid. Covid SOP implementation lacking enforcement; guests and visitors walked around not masked. Overall the property is well designed with a connecting car-parks block, excellent location in the historic Georgetown. The disappointing point is the Maintenance and Operation that need some improvement.

Terrible place for parking on a weekend. Brought my family here for buffer dinner. Choices were limited and options for international flavours were limited. The lamb was dried and hard. The seafood especially the crayfish was NOT fresh at all. Had better! Hope the hotel improves its service with the front entrance forgein workers. Buffet staff has better service than the hotel.

Absolutely disastrous stay here in the Royale Chulan Penang. I have been a patron of this hotel over the years and sad to say this is my LAST TIME here. To the management of Royale Chulan hotels, if you cannot cope with the high bookings over the peak period, stop the bookings, its a pity to see your staff overworked and looked defeated on the front desk. Here is my story: 1. 3.30pm - Arrive at the hotel to check in, there was already a long que all the way to the front entrance door. 2. 4.00pm - Managed to reach the front desk to give my details to check in. Front desk staff told us rooms are NOT READY. Front desk staff told us to wait at the side and will inform us once the room is ready. 3. 4.35pm - Waited nearly 40 minutes and still no news, had to go forward to ask again if the rooms are ready, and front desk told us that they were short of staff for cleaning services. At this point of time, we were a little frustrated , who wont be?! 4. 4.50pm - Got a room, and the room was not even tidy. Debris were everywhere on the carpet floor, hair from previous patron were all over the toilet floor. No face towels, no robes. Bed was not made properly. 5. Car park was always full , cars had to park at the intersections blocking pathways. This is not a fake review, real case scenario, last stay here in the Royale Chulan. Doubt they will do anything and just respond to our case with a standard customer service apology template with no sense of human touch at all. Well royale chulan hotel u have one less customer to worry about and this review will remain here till the end of days. Thank you and goodbye.

Hotel that used to be a 4-5 star business hotel 20 years ago but now quite run down and in need of maintenance and upkeep. On the upside, the price was quite cheap and it is relatively conveniently located and close to a good foodcourt just in the parking lot of the hotel. There is a swimming pool, but it also needs some upkeep.

Checked in at middle of the night as the flight got delayed. The staff wasn't attentive. I know its late night but they work night shift anyway. Check in process was quick. Before coming to the hotel, we called. Before fly, we called too many times too. But never picked up. Not sure why but its rang. During our stay, the bar is not open probably due to pandemic still. Room smells damp. Entey light need fixing but fixed after reported. Overall stay, 3.5 star

The lobby is actually behind the main road. Interestingly, during the night the light signage would be projected onto the wall and road to show the direction to the hotel lobby. I always liked a hotel with parking complex facilities. It is so convinent. The lobby is truly simple but looks luxurious with marble wall. Service at the reception was efficient. The hotel is not a high rise. As we got into the lift, it had a security feature. The room was definitely 1st class. From the moment you entered the room, the finishing such as wall paper, checkered flooring gave the room the sense of luxury. However there were slight drawback. The rainshower pump was quite loud and water would spill over the glass screen. But overall a great experience and a great stay at this hotel. Kudos to the staffs of the hotel.

The Superior room with a king sized bed is one of the better hotel rooms I have seen. It's spacious and quiet, thus easily creating a romantic atmosphere I would recommend to couples out there. The bathroom appears to be very well maintained, luxurious and clean, making it a joy for staycations. One negative feedback though, would be on the location. The way to the hotel is slightly misleading as a quick left turn is needed immediately from the main road or what we refer to as the Pengkalan Weld. Moreover, it is recessed deeply opposite the Chew Jetty. Another aspect that could be improved is the parking location and design. It's a separate block from the hotel building itself and it looks pretty shady overall. It's similarly as bad as many other places on the Penang island, an island which tourism and investment outlook appeals to others partly because of the rapid land reclamation. Well, let's hope the Gen-Z engineers stick to their professions after they graduate.

The staff are super friendly and the bed were super comfy. The breakfast was decent. Apart from that, I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. The hotel is in desperate need of refurbishment. For a 4 star hotel, the standard is below par. The bathroom was peeling off and mouldy, shower door looked like it wasn’t cleaned for years, the carpet and chairs had crumbs.

Terribly rundown and in need of repairs. Firstly, we requested a family room for 4 and paid extra for this. Upon check in, we were given a room with 3 single beds. When we asked to change the room, we were told there were no others available. The wooden parts of the floor were crumbling and scattering pieces across the floor. The carpeted section in front of the bathroom was soggy, so my guess is that water is seeping from the shower into the main bedroom. I don’t even want to know what type of mould is growing under the carpets. The room itself is clean enough, so the housekeeping team are doing the best they can. However another traveller in our group had a massive cockroach in their room. The worst of all is the club across the road is pumping loud music until 3.30am so if your room is facing the road, good luck getting a good night’s sleep. All in all a pretty bad experience - this hotel is not just showing it’s age, it desperately needs repairing.

Horrible experience. The sheets smells of VOMIT! hot water was barely hot and water pressure was low. The breakfast will get your whole shirt and pants smelly from cooking, no proper ventilation. Dont even deserve any star on this hotel. The worst part is the receptionist and manager who promised to call me back to address my issue. NOT A SINGLE CALL OR WORD!!! I can accept some kind of lower standards services but not addressing your customer is one hell of a big mistake! NEVER AGAIN im gonna step in this hotel.

Rooms were spacious - enough wardrobe space, even had a small daybed, enough socket points. Bathroom was a good size with separate section for toilet and shower area separated by the sink. Location was excellent- good to walk around to the Swettenham Pier, Fort Cornwallis, Esplanade, restaurants. Area was brightly lit at night - so no fear of walking around at night. Breakfast was good with a good variety of Malaysian and western food.

Overall good experience here but would not stay here again. Nice buffet breakfast but many food not cooked fresh. Location is nice, quiet and safe and entry staff was welcoming, other staff not so much. Room was still dirty, fridge had coke stains inside and ants around fridge, half blame cleaning staff but also could be previous occupants being disgusting. Room services cleaned up and changed sheets again after complaint (they didnt seem happy to do this), i would have preferred a room change. It is a very old building with many things falling apart or leaking. Very different building and experience compared to Royale Chulan KL. Many other hotels to stay at in Penang for next time.

Beautiful hotel with strategic location. Its located nearby chew jetty where one can see a beautiful sunrise at the jetty. Also nearby to famous breakfast locations. Please ask for rooms that face or have the sea view where you will be able to see huge cruise ships parked. The buffet breakfast are not the best in the town but pretty decent with mixture of local and continental. Multiple story parking is available free of charge inside the hotel. Room is clean and as expected for a 4star hotel. The 2 reason I don't give 5 star to this hotel is 1) The recipient counter staff didn't give me an opportunity to say anything but straight away ask me to come again at 3pm for check in(I arrived around 2pm) and I didnt even ask for early check in. I just reached the counter to ask whether they have reservation under my name. 2) I got to call 2 times and waited for 30 minutes for my luggage to be delivered to room. Other than these 2 incidents, the service was OK.

I don't get all the 5-star reviews. Very suprising. Anyway, the pleasant well spoken girl at the concierge was definitely 5star. The hotel itself is 3-Star at best and the rooms are clearly dated. Pretty looking building from the outside but it's the room that matters to me most. Moving on to the next hotel. Posting some pictures i took as soon as i checked in. Superior Suite RM 189 nett. Thank you.

A fairly good Ramadan buffet with 5 Pax in our group. It never ceases to amaze me how attendees, presumably thinking the food might run out ( & most nicer items did actually !) need to stack their many , many plates so high that inevitably there is huge food wastage at the end. Some of those overdoing it should think of so many folks in Penang & Malaysia who are struggling to find a meal every day. My request to this Hotel & all others is to charge those who "take too much food and yet leave so much wastage". Let's tackle the issue now please. The Hoteliers in Malaysia should join together to come up with some better ways to tackle the problems. Thanks.

It was situated by the seaside. Though it's not exactly downtown very close to the tourist spots, getting around from here was not hard at all. Thanks to the convenience of Grab cars. The hotel consisted of six floors altogether. The breakfast buffet was offered on Ground Floor, while the gym and swimming pool were on 2/F.

Booked two room for business trip. All went well from reception, concierge and front office. Aircond just light temperature and not cold. Breakfast with good buffet spread and taste. Room was clean and well maintain. But, until i found big cockroaches in my room. Inform front office staff named Faizal, but just said ‘okay, will inform to our housekeeping’. Not even mention sorry at all. Left my phone charger, and contact the hotel. They found it and promise to send to me by curier. Big thumbs up.

The presentation of the place is satisfied. The pool equipped with jacuzzi. No buffet breakfas just a lame breakfast set and free flow of juice roti bakar roti canai and noodle soup. I sometimes wonder how did they interview their chef. Makcik at roadside can do a nasi goreng way more better. Meanwhile theres no restrictions at nasi kandar only in hotel.

New Year Eve Buffet 31/12/2020. The food is excellent with the variety of main dishes and desserts. The spacious and clean (though dated) studio suite had a terrace with a view of the harbour. Staff were cordial with fluent English: special mention to the security guards who demonstrated unwavering dedication in their door-opening and patron-greeting duties, even in the middle of the night. Breakfast spread was decent - the Ayam Rendang to go along with the Nasi Lemak was especially delicious. Very short walking distance to Fort Cornwallis and a 7-Eleven whose exterior looked like a wand shop in Hogsmeade Village. The other tourist bits like the Street Art are within 15 minutes by foot.

We stayed in adjoining rooms for 3 nights. The hotel honestly had its grand days past and badly needs a refurbishment. Mattress is fine but the bedsheets are a disgrace for any hotel worth their salt. The rooms are dated and signs of neglects can be seen everywhere from peeled wallpapers to broken fixtures. The saving grace is breakfast as it is actually quite generous and varied menu. I sincerely hope the hotel can regain its former glory.

Clean, comfortable and convenient hotel. Providing multi level parking for guest which make this very convenient as parking could be challenging in Georgetown. Book at room on klook at the price of RM171. City view, but it’s not city view and I heard construction going on nearby. Hotel is clean, is not dirty like others traveller’s review. I’m happy with this. No chair in our room. Overall it’s good bc there are so many restaurants tourist spot at walking distance. I will come back again and choose the room carefully.

Making the reservation was simple and they accommodated my request for early check in since there were rooms available. The room was neat, clean and it had a nice view of the pool. Once I parked my car in the car park, I didn't have to use it again as everything was within walking distance - food and sightseeing. I had dinner in the hotel and it was worth the price. Will definitely return for another stay.

Centrally located at the business district nearby banks and government offices. Hotel entrance is away from the main road. Parking is available but with limited numbers. Checking in was smooth and fast, rooms are ready to be occupied. We were lucky to arrived at the right time! Room is comfortable and spacious. There is a dressing area next to the bathroom. Staffs are friendly and helpful. We throughly enjoyed our stay and would happily visit again. Exceed expectation!

Overall great experience staying here as it's central and accessible to all the food spots in georgetown. Downside is the parking for the hotel which is insufficient especially during weekends. The breakfast that they serve is pretty much the same for 3 days I've stayed there. Hope that the management will work on this

Good location as it is near all tourist spots. They need to check their property properly and how the staff maintain the place. It’s quite ok but not really maintained nicely. Toilet has cobwebs, thick layer of dust on lamp shade. Whoever design the toilet most likely didn’t check properly, while showering (rain shower head) the water will flow out of the shower area, to the bathroom door, to the corridor and to the front of the room. We had to call for bath towel, floor mat and toiletries. Buffet breakfast considered okay. They also give free parking for guests. Front counter and security are all friendly.

I checked in on 7/12 in the afternoon, first thing first I’m amazed by the customer service of the front counter staff at the moment. There was an annoying uncle complaining very loud regarding some double booking issue and just keep on scolding the manager and staff, however they just play it cool and answer his question respectfully and professionally. Salute to you guys as I understand front counter service is always challenging! The hotel room is big and great and the breakfast is wonderful. Will definitely visit again!

The hotel is looking old, outdated and tired. The buffet breakfast was good. My room was a deluxe room was clean and comfortable. The aircond was quiet and cold. The shower was good. I will stay here again even if it's a boring hotel.

The room is spacious with nice deco and with balcony facing the pool too. The staff is really friendly and quick to respond. The housekeeping staff is excellent. Food is yummy. The hotel smells very nice, feels like you are in Lovely Lace shop, probably the most fragrant hotel I've been to. Highly recommended.

I was check in here on 26 to 27 March 22. This is my second time check in here. Breakfast was good. Room clean and tidy. Service fast and good. Location good but not enough parking for guest. Should improve it as soon as possible.

A very nice stay. Location is superb, many historical sites are within walking distance. Also very convenient to get an e-hailing vehicle. Food is fine, with a few good dishes, such as salted egg prawns, grilled lamb, chicken rolls. Favourite dessert was the chocolate chaux pastry.

Nice location. Very convenient cause parking building is just side by side with the hotel. It can be validated too. Room is clean in general. Water pressure is good. Wet dry toilet separated too. Only suggestion is that the sink area can get a lil wet. Only two towels provided but extra cloth isn’t provided for the floor. Staffs are all friendly.
