I spent one month in this hostel and everything was very good until the day when the owner came to me angry, almost agressive because I didn’t wash my stuffs in the kitchen right away after using. To explain to you, I was just me, myself and I in the kitchen so I took my time to eat first and then I had planned in my mind to wash my stuffs like I do usually. I can understand that we have to wash the cooking stuffs quickly when it’s busy but at this time it was no reason to react as he did. I was not bothering anyone. Maybe he needed to show me he has power. Anyway, next he took my room card to put a note against me. I felt like a kid in primary school . It was so pathetic. I was confused and surprised about what it was just happened. We spend about 350$AU a week for a 12 beds dorm, I think he could be a bit more friendly with his clients. He doesn’t have good business sense at all. Anyway, I knew later that some clients didn’t like him very well. He is very lucky to have staffs very friendly. I can’t accept this behavior. Happy to finally have found a apartment. I refuse to give money to the kind of person. PS: Maybe it’s time to change fry pans because they are damaged and maybe you could put towels to try our hand in your bathroom because you dry hands machines don’t work properly then your washing machine make blue stains on our clothes.

I was expecting something more cozy for the price@!! (36$!!!) In low season!!! Next to the street and no curtains to have a good rest at night. The bunk beds are old and shake every time someone moves... In the rooms there are just beds and a locker.... no aircon!!! It was too hot at night! There is too areas for watching movies but they are next to the corridor without doors.. so not enjoyable to watch anything. They have a bar outside of the hostel so they don't alow backpackers yo bring their own alcoholic drinks.... The receptionist are nice though and it's nice to have some coffee and tee for free☺. Still I wouldn't come back to this hostel.

Okay so the staff were absolutely amazing! So helpful and friendly- just fantastic! Beds are quite basic- very creaky and not that comfy. They have curtains but they cover barely half the side of the bed- you can block out the other people in the other beds if you have a towel as well but it doesn't afford much privacy Also very little storage space- the underbed lockers are awkwardly shaped and not that useful Overall it's an alright place to stay- but considering they're currently charging 50 bucks a night it's probably a bit overpriced for what you get

Great hostel! I would definitely book here again. Highlights: stayed in a female dorm and everyone was lovely. The different areas to chill in, the kitchen has a big table to sit at, a study area with a few desks, another couple small tables near the stairwell and the tv room. The kitchen had loads of appliances, cutlery, pots and pans to use (also cleaned daily after breakfast time). The rooms were comfortable with a fan but I imagine in peak summer it could get a bit stuffy, the windows open (although no screen for mozzies). Big bathrooms with space inside the shower cubicles to dress, also private showers/bathrooms on level 2. Social and communal vibe, felt safe with myself and my stuff around others. The cafe next door was very nice, good coffee and croissants, and people. There is Thursday night trivia which I didn’t make it to but great idea. The location, 10min walk into the city, close to Melb Museum as well. Parking next door if you’re doing road trip and need to put car somewhere. Thanks The Mansion crew :)

People working there are awesome. Hats off for their work done. The place has a big kitchen with lots of utensils, and a couple of areas for having your meals. It has a TV room and some desks for working with laptop. Travelers staying there have a good vibe. Everything clean and tidy. Would recommend.

Good location and helpful staff, but cleaning is the worst. There were rats on the kitchen floor and in my room. I had to leave at 11pm to find other room in CBD, because the rats were running in my room floor. I do not recommend.

The Mansion Melbourne Hostel exceeded my expectations on various fronts. The kind staff, impeccable cleanliness, good service, and a strong emphasis on safety made my stay truly comfortable. Additionally, its convenient location close to the city center adds significant value, making it an ideal choice for those looking for both accessibility and a pleasant stay.

I stayed at The Mansion Melbourne for five nights after arriving in the city for a working holiday. Although nothing was terribly wrong, I was generally disappointed by my stay. I felt the pros of the property (good location in CBD, generally clean, co-working spaces) were outweighed by the negatives. For one, the advertising of the hostel online does not accurately represent the hostel or amenities offered. I stayed in the 12-bed dorm, which was overcrowded, did not have lockers (as advertised), and the privacy curtains (advertised) are so dilapidated that they are essentially non-existent. Additionally, the beds are cheap and shaky, and it is quite loud to sleep given the hostel is next to a hospital and fire station. It is also a dry hostel, which is not mentioned online and would have affected my choice to stay there in the first place. The cafe/bar downstairs, advertised as a nice place to hang out, is open at extremely strange hours, so I never actually had a chance to visit it. In general, the layout of the hostel is not conducive to meeting other solo travelers. It would be nice to have some activities or a WhatsApp group organized by the hostel to help people meet each other. For these reasons, I would recommend booking your stay in Melbourne elsewhere.

The best hostel I’ve stayed at. The cleanliness here is top notch. Kitchen is cleaned regularly and bathrooms are also clean. Front desk staff are also super lovely and helpful. Great location too very central to lots of things in Melbourne

One of the best hostels I have been in travelling this year. A huge restored building, spotlessly clean with great kitchen facilities and cheap card operated laundry. The location is perfect, quiet and right beside a great park and a lovely museum but within walking distance to the city centre and areas with amazing food/nightlife. Above all the staff were so nice, enthusiastic but in a genuine way and super helpful!

2 mins walk from the tram station. Looks like a historic building with spacious rooms. Hot and cold water with good pressure. Clean common places. Staff at reception very courteous and friendly. Quick check in and check out. Good size kitchen with multiple fridge and storage

Had an amazing stay at Melbourne Mansion. Clean rooms, good vibes, great location to the best of Melbourne night life, and surrounded by beautiful greenery. I was happy to greeted by the lovely Ashley and her welcoming energy. Would highly recommend!

The staff is really friendly! I felt very welcome since I came into the door! The hostel is nice and clean. I was in a 4 People mixed room and was really grateful for the little curtains around the bed, these give you a little bit of privacy. The kitchen is unfortunately very small and most of the times really busy. I found it quite hard to find a time to cook. It's also bit hard to find a space where you can call someone in the evening because most areas where you can sit are already taken. It would be nice if the gate to the garden was open in the evenings, so you could go out for a call for example. I can understand that the gate is open when the staff is around but I'm pretty sure that a solution would be there if wanted. The location is really nice, Fitzroy is in walking distance (10-15 minutes) and also there are three different Tram Stations which take you into the city center. I really enjoyed my stay, thank you!

I stayed at The Mansion for a couple of nights and was made to feel welcome by the hospitable staff. The location is unbeatable and the bedroom / bathroom facilities were well maintained and of a high quality. 5 stars for a faultless experience.

I didnt think I'd stay months in this hostel, but that just speaks volume to how great the Mansion is. The staff stays on top of cleanliness, there are lots of kitchen ammenities, and super comfy beds. Though it's not a drinking hostel, it's a social one, perfect for solo travelers. The Mansion is perfectly located, as it's just at the edge of CBD but not in the chaos of it all, and it's a 5 minute walk away from Fitzroy. Matt, Ashley, Emma and the rest of the staff (all are such characters) have been lovely and were always there to help. This place will forever have a place in my heart.

Loved my stay here. The staff were lovely and polite and did whatever they could to make sure you enjoyed your stay. The location was prime, it was a five minute walk to some of the best cafes, shops and bars in Melbourne and public transport was at my doorstep. The rooms were comfortable and clean. As a solo traveller I felt safe in the shared dorms and met some great new friends. Overall I would say this is one of the best hostels I’ve stayed in!

Although the bedrooms are a bit small and in need of some improvements, all in all is a nice hostel with friendly staff and nice ambience. Well located.

A great place to stay if you like warm atmosphere. It feels great because it's easy to meet people. And the staff is amazingly welcoming. You'll never be alone in this hostel. Why 4 stars? Prices increased dramatically for high season (almost 10 dollars per night) which will make you almost forget the definition of an hostel:cheap accommodation in dormitories. I feel that this increase is not justified. Ameneties are clean, beds with curtains, a kitchen with all furnitures but there is not outstanding services (like a jaccuzi at the space hostel) or any activities organized (like yoga classes every morning at the Selina hostel). For the three of them prices are the same though. The value of this hostel is made by the hosts who create the atmosphere. This shouldn't be forgotten :)

An infuriating stay. Don’t pick the 7 bed dorm because if you get the single bed you get far less for your money. No power outlet, light or privacy curtain - completely exposed. The room was small and overcrowded with people who looked like they’d been there for months. Very small living quarters with insufficient power outlets or places to sit. Wifi was completely useless and if you managed to connect was still very slow. I had to use mobile data most of the time because it would randomly log me out. The only redeeming quality were the staff who were friendly and helpful, I think they just need to spend a bit of time fixing these issues.

I have stayed here 3 times and struggle not to compare all other hostels I stay at to The Mansion. I've found the environment to be comfortable, respectful and fun. The staff are friendly and accommodating. It’s not a party hostel but it is easy to find people who are happy to go out and explore or stay in and have a chat at the kitchen table. The location is fantastic. It's close to Fitzroy and the CBD. Parliament Station is around the corner, which connects to Melbourne's free tram network and regional trains. Public spaces are clean and bright, the kitchen is well-equipped and the rooms have big windows, heaters and comfy beds with privacy curtains and individual electrical outlets. It's not perfect-- sometimes you do have to wait a few minutes for space in the bathroom or kitchen at peak times, the building is very pretty but old so it has some wear and tear and can be drafty-- but it is obvious that thought and care is being invested into the space. I recommend The Mansion as a great spot for rookie and experienced travellers looking for a place to stay in Melbs.

The Mansion was a great hostel due to its location and all the lovely people you meet! The surrounding area is super well connected and close to transport. Everyone in the hostel was super friendly and the dorms were what you'd expect from a hostel. There were a few older men staying so as a woman I'd recommend avoiding the mixed rooms. The only downside was that they chucked out my food as they do weekly clearouts which I do think is good for any hostel fridge however I think that they could maybe have a "will be chucked" shelf where they put it first as I lost a few days of food due to it.

I stayed 2 month in this hostel and I’m so sad to live it because it was so nice. The location is perfect because you have lot of parcs close to this place and the CBD at 5 minutes walking. You can learn English with other people all the time and you have a little so nice garden. The service was perfect, for exemple Ezra was so friendly with us. You can ask all the time questions and if you have problems they try to do every things to help you. Thanks of all the staff i’lol miss you in advance. 🌈✨🙏❤️

Great hostel, one of the best I've been in. A lot of space, great living room where you can work or watch a movie, very well-equiped kitchen with spices, oil and other essentials.

I highly recommend The Mansion as somewhere to stay in Melbourne. The hostel is in the most stunning 1901 building with lots of original features and is only a short walk into the cbd or Fitzroy. The hostel is not so much of a party hostel but is still very social which was perfect for me. The rooms and common areas are comfortable and relaxing. The hostel is cleaned everyday at least twice a day so for a hostel the standard is very high. The kitchen is fully equipped with so many appliances as well as spices, oils, etc. which again for a hostel is amazing!! The staff are so friendly and attentive which really makes your stay memorable. The Mansion is very homely which I think helps backpackers being away from home.

I really liked this hostel- big spacious rooms. The building is under construction but it's a beautiful spot. Just need to work on the front desk staff being present.

The location and the hostel itself was amazing! You can easily go to any places in the CBD area by walking or catching the tram (within the tram free zone!!). The only downside is that there is a fire station nearby, so unfortunately you could hear the siren every now and then, even at night. However, in general, it was still a great place to stay at and everyone is extremely nice :)

Perfect Hostel for long-term stay! I had a great time here. The Mansion is one of the smaller hostels, which I personally prefer. It is very spacious and there's plenty of room to find a quiet corner for yourself or socialise in the kitchen and in the TV room. Not sure how easy it is to socialise as a short-term stay, since most people know each other because they've been staying for several weeks (like me). But I suppose that always depends on the people that are there when you are:) The kitchen is unbelievably well equipped - even a sandwich maker (which is actually cleaned daily!!) and a rice cooker. (The only thing that could be replaced with new ones are the pans.) They change the sponges daily (which is unfortunately very rare in other hostels) and there's always fresh tea towels as well. Plenty of space to store your food and the free food shelf works super well! Rooms are quite basic but got everything you need - there's a plug and light at every bed, curtains that go halfway and if you're lucky, you'll get one of the beds with the pockets to hold small things like phones etc (could be improved so that every bed, especially top bunks get them). Beds are quite squeaky and mattresses are a bit too soft for my personal taste. There's shared bathrooms and private bathrooms which was great. They get cleaned multiple times during the day and therefor are usually clean. WiFi worked well. The washing machine and dryer can be paid by tap on card, which is super handy. Location is pretty ideal. Close enough to CBD but not in the middle of that mess and also close to Fitzroy. Parliament station is less than a 5 mins walk and from there you have great transport to most places. And the cherry on top of it all is the staff - especially Ashley but also all the other staff members are lovely and so helpful and supportive and just made the stay 10 times better! So to sum this super long review up - The Mansion has all you could possibly need for even a long-term stay: great atmosphere, chilled and no party hostel, best equipped kitchen, plenty of storage and space. Would've loved to stay here again for my second time in Melbourne, though unfortunately it is not the cheapest and despite all the big advantages, it's not affordable for me at the moment. But if you can afford it, I can tell you it's definitely the best hostel you'll find in Melbourne! Thanks for this great stay to all of the staff! All the best:) Katharina

Okay hostel, it just seemed pretty quiet and people weren't doing much compared to a hostel I stayed in Sydney so I moved to a hotel instead. The staff were great though and the facilities were not bad for a hostel. Just a quiet day when I went I guess which was a shame.

I stayed as a solo traveller in the female dorm and I couldn't recommend this place anymore! Great staff - Max is super welcoming and good fun, makes you feel at home! New management took over in August and the place has recently been renovated so it feels very new, and is incredibly clean. The beds all have plug sockets and a reading light. The female dorm includes a hair dryer and straighteners which is such a great touch. Really close to the CBD, Carlton Gardens and a stones throw from loads of great bars and restaurants in Fitzroy. Also loads of great transport links on the door step. The kitchen is clean, and the hostel runs a number of free events through the week which is great for meeting other travellers. It's a really inclusive place with no cliques. There's also a bar directly next door.

Loved my stay here! The Staff are super welcoming and make you feel comfortable when travelling alone. Rooms are clean and great vibes all round. Location was ideal for me as I love somewhere that is close to public transport, cafes & restaurants.

The staff was friendly, and I suppose out of all the hostels in Melbourne this is one of the more durable ones. That being said, I didn't enjoy my stay in Mel because of this hostel. There were ants on the floor in our room as well as in the hallway. The hostel was overall quite messy, and let its guests be that as well. The kitchen was dirty and way too small for the size of the hostel. The staff was friendly, but I assume they were backpackers or working-holidayers like the rest of us. One very positive thing I will say is the location is great. We could way so most things e.g. Fitzroy fairly close to the hostel. Also, there's a tv, and although the couches are a bit grim, it was nice to be able to put on a film and chill with other peeps.

An excellent two week stay at this beautiful hostel. Spotless and spacious rooms and showers. Comfortable beds and duvets. Friendly, professional and helpful staff -especially Max who went out of his way to help me a few times. A nice mix of short term and long term guests and the space makes it just as easy to socialise as to hang out and chill by yourself with a garden, great kitchen facilities, TV room, reception area and on site bar to choose from. They also organise activities most evenings like pub quizes, sausage sizzles, cheese and wine nights and the location is also perfect. Excellent value for money and I wouldn't stay anywhere else if I go back to Melbourne 😊

This is a perfect example of how a good hostel should be. Clean rooms, great vibe and super convenient location to the hip bars and hot spots of Melbourne. Will definitely stay again, just wish it could have been longer!

When you book a hostel you know what to expect bunk bed, sharing rooms with a bunch of people from all over the world, shared bathrooms, common kitchen. The bathrooms were clean and maintained, the rooms were alright. The place being a Victorian building wasn’t flash but had lots of character. The people were great and the location was ideal it was on the edge of the free tram corridor so very handy and cheap to get to the city. The bad side was no lift so heavier luggage’s are a struggle to carry especially to the third floor and the place being soo close to the roads and Melbourne teams running late in the night it was a struggle to get a good sleep. It will be handy to have some ear plug for a sound sleep.

Amazing location. One of the cleanest hostels I've stayed in and everyone there is really nice. If you're in Melbourne in the winter, you can't go wrong here. Only downside when it gets crowded in the summer might be the fact there's not much common place for the amount of guests there

  • 4/5 Wendy C. 5 years ago on Google
My husband and I stayed in a private double room with shared bathroom for 5 nights. The room and bathrooms were very clean throughout the stay. The kitchen was well cleaned by staff but it seems the regulars do not keep up with washing their mugs and cutlery in a timely manner; it would be nice if this culture changed. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. The hostel does not allow you to bring in your own alcohol but the attached bar does offer hostel guests decent discounts depending on the day. Finally, they do not mention on their website that they have a WiFi limit of 500mb per day. I find this a bit ridiculous. (They specifically advertise “NEW AND IMPROVED FREE WIFI THROUGHOUT THE HOSTEL”, no mention of a limit.)

Do not stay at this hostel ! The communication between the manager and his guests is the worst of any service I’ve ever experienced and extremely unprofessional. I was kicked out of the hostel without any prior conversation about why, or pre-warning so I could make other sleeping arrangements. I have since repeatedly asked to have a call and even sent an email to which all have been completely ignored. As a paying customer, all I am asking for is an explanation about why I went through this experience, and the decency of a genuine reply from the management. I don’t normally leave reviews but this situation was so incredibly out of line that I feel it is my duty to warn others about the way the manager here treats his customers !

Great location, park, bars , theatre etc and a long way from King Street . Also the place looks like a castle! Only draw back is that the the bar is not running yet (apparently place only just re-opened ) . Staff were super friendly .

$50/night and the WIFI doesn't work 99% of the time. If you're lucky to connect, it's super slow! You have been warned! Everything else is really nice....location, staff friendliness, other guests are awesome, great facilities. But I just wasn't happy with how much I paid and how unlivable it is without working internet.

By far the best hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Safe, clean and friendly! Staff remember everyone’s names, everyone is polite and respectful. Lights out 11pm-9am and low noise time is a godsend. INDIVIDUAL BATHROOMS! Absolute selling point. Beautiful building too. The only downside is a lot of long term residents have moved into rooms and they are cramped and a bit smelly because of this but the communal living spaces are spotless and wonderful. Hard to meet people as a lot of long term but eveyones always ready for a chat even if they don’t have time to socialise. Also the website says the bar is open with socials but it isn’t yet, just a cafe. Changed my opinion in hostels, I urge everyone to stay here for a comfortable, clean and safe experience

Stayed long term at the Mansion for 3 months. The staff are absolutely incredible and friendly. The building is in great shape and maintained well. The rooms are a good size and the amenities are solid. The location is perfect for exploring Melbourne. Special shout out to Colleen, Tom, and Ash on reception for making my stay such a great experience.
