Really enjoyed my stay! Staff and other guests were friendly and helpful. Dorm rooms have their own bathrooms and rooms are cleaned every day. Good deals on food and drink in the bar downstairs and there are events on their rooftop bar at the weekend.

The rooms have ensuite bathrooms, daily cleaning by really friendly staff and we were warmly welcomed on reception even though we didn't arrive until 10pm. The bar next door was good fun too and you get discount on drinks for staying here. Good value for money and really close to the trams to get to the city. Would definitely recommend

I stayed in summerhouse Melbourne for about 2 months and absolutely loved it! The staff are super helpful and friendly. The rooms are big and are cleaned daily which is always appreciated. There is a bar downstairs that has a nice atmosphere and good drinks. Friendly hostel and super close to the beach. I would recommend as a solo traveller.

The room is clear and the toilet is separate for each room. Good hostel, because they keep the COVID rules. We are two people and live in 5-bed room. Nice.

Genuinely the worst experience I have ever had with any accomodation. Travelled for years and never had this poor level of customer service. Please for your own sake AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS.

Given this place is a backpackers in one of Melbourne's Iconic locations - St Kilda, Its offers a range of options for the avid adventurous traveller. Keeping that in mind it has a great Hotel Bar with great specials every night of the week and an opportunity to rub shoulders with locals. Also has a great roof top bar facility when it's not booked out for Private Functions. It's stone throw away from the hustle and bustle of Acland St and the parks and beaches such St Kilda Beach, Elwood Beach, Albert Lake Park and the Grand Lunar Park. Great and helpful staff who are committed to ensuring your stay here is enjoyable. They also offer the option to help out in exchange for accomodation which is a great way to get connected and meet a bunch of great people. Considering this facility is a backpackers and having travelled and stayed in many backpackers this is definitely a great spot!

Great place to live at. Very cooperative, even let me in at 12:30 am as my flight was delayed. They have a Pub down stairs and an amazing Bar/Club up stairs. The other backpackers were really good too. Thank you, will choose the same place again if I come to Melbourne.

Rooms were nice, and clean too. I stayed in an 8 bed dorm room, was great, each bed has its own twin power point, near the bed, beds were nice and comfortable. Staff are fantastic, easy to talk to, and very helpful. Only thing that I did not like is the location, ling way from the City, but, if not being in the City is your thing, then, you will love it. You even get a free drink card when you check in, to be used at the Hotel next door. Breakfast is not supplied, even though the ad says that it is

Arrived late, bar staff were quick to call on a reception staff member to check us in, friendly and polite. The buildings interior a little run down, however appeared it was going through an update, the toxic smell of paint fumes filled the air on all floors. The private room, spacious and somewhat clean, bathroom well done out. The kitchen, a joke. The amount of people staying there for the space in the kitchen, terrible, like a cattle farm, two tables, enough for 6/8 people but far more staying. Bring a torch if you plan to cook after sun down, two measly lights to cook under. If you enjoy sleep, pray you get out in the back, constant noise from a busy intersection, racing cars through to early hours of the morning. Stayed a few more days than planned, charged more than a 4 star hotel which was up the road. After the stay was up, we were greeted by a rude receptionist, very dismissive and rarely acknowledged you when you required assistance. Highly recommend looking about, for an alternative stay in a better run, cheaper hostel.

Really nice vibe in the hostel, with a great bar attached to it. Staff are all friendly and the rooms are good enough. Would highly recommend.

The location of the Hostel is amazing with coffee shops on your doorstep as well as supermarkets and the beach! The hostel in itself has on suite bathrooms, so Jo awkward corridor shower issues. And no forgetting your room key every time you pee. The staff at reception are super friendly, And Marie also gave us a guide to Melbourne booklet for free!!

Best hostel in Melbourne, the area is just in front of the beach and there is really good public transport around. Moreover, the hostel has great rooms, with a private room each one and shared areas are great. By the way, I loved the rooftop you enjoy great sunsets there. I am going to come back 100%

Really kind and fun staff and the manager is always so accommodating and helpful! Super fun vibes at both bars in the building and great people were staying there! Also the location is ideal! Just minutes away from the beach, Luna Park, and acland street.

Ok location, but extremely run down and rough venue. Hasn’t seen much investment in a long time, and the patrons and guests leave a lot to be desired.

I am very fussy with big cities and accommodations. As not all hostels or accommodation feels like home in foreign big Cities. Fortunately for me , i have stumbled over a gem of St Kikda; Summer house St kilda. I love a lot of things about it, the people to start with. People are friendly and out-going for the most part ( cultural and personality differences can only be the reason of why you are not friend with someone) but for the most part, i make friends everyday, the atmosphere just feels like a summer camp. The location is perfect, 5 min walk to the beach, 30 sec walk to the cheapest takeaway coffee in Melbourne (Coles express 1.50$) and its low key very good ngl. Nearest pubs is down 1 level , i don’t need to go out if i wanna go out HAHHA you know. Anyways, lots of perks like beds being genuinely comfy like better then at my mums. Housekeeping cleaning everyday the whole day : housekeepers rotating from 7 am to 7 pm there is a cleaner also after 10 pm and onwards. Better then at mums for sure … she doesn’t clean my room like the housekeepers . Bathrooms inside the room, ensuite style, again, better then at my mums. Lmao! I also after a moment got to be a housekeeper for acc. In exchange and every minute of working is worth my free sleep zzzzz. I sincerely enjoy my time here , i mean there is a lot of perks in this hostel there may be 2-3 flaws but honestly you just disregard them because you realize that its better then at your mums . Thank you summer house

Had an amazing time here at summerhouse backpackers! We got to the Hostel close to 12am. I felt bad since the check in was technically closed. There was a staff on duty who came down diligently to let us in and get us checking in for the night and it was an easy process! my boyfriend and I got a private room that could fit 3. We have stayed in a couple private rooms but nothing compared to this one! The room was absolutely massive! Bigger than any hotel room I had ever stayed in. It had a private bathroom which was renovated and lovely and even had a large sliding door that could be opened! There were towels provided and we even had a mini fridge in our room! They had a great movie/lounge room, that we underutilized. Kitchen was tight. There were very large tables which left minimal room to move around the kitchen. More storage would be a plus too because it did seem cluttered. But it had all working burners, microwaves and kettles so I couldn’t complain too much! Location was great, quick walk to tram and bus stations and grocery stores and restaurants! They even have a bar right below the hostel. It’s a public bar but if you stay there you get discounted rates! We got a jug of beer for $10! Would highly recommend!!

If you're a backpacker, do yourself a favour book somewhere else, out of the three Ive stayed at in Melbourne this was the worst. Try maybe Flinders Backpackers I had a good experience there and I also had a good experience at Space! Trust me start your travels in Melbourne right.

The room (6 beds female) was big and clean, with private toilet and warm shower. The icing on the cake was the staff: super friendly and helpful. A huge thanks to Max, always attentive to the needs of the guests.

If you're a backpacker looking for a nice hostel where it's really easy to get to know people, where the atmosphere is fun and cozy and where the staff genuinely try to solve problems and make your stay comfortable, choose Summer House Melbourne 💖 The location is great in St Kilda, the prices of the bar/restaurant downstairs are really cheap for hostel guests and it's easy to get to know others at the bar, for example during the weekly trivia or karaoke. And if you want to do more than party, this is the best hostel in Melbourne for that: they organize various sports activities, free pizza nights, movie nights, hanging out on the roof terrace or picnic ect. AND on Sundays some of the best hostel pancakes with good toppings!! 😍 The kitchen is medium-sized, but it's actually much better than a large kitchen, because it's natural to get to know others when eating and cooking together vs. everyone sitting separately at their own table. The reception is open 24/7, so arriving at any time is possible and help is always available. So I really recommend this place ♥️ When I moved to other hostels, I really realized how special the atmosphere is in this hostel. Each room has its own bathroom which was awesome!! There are sockets near the beds, the lockers could hold a lot of stuff and the rooms had a lot of space compared to many other hostels! The housekeepers also clean all the rooms and bathrooms every day, so the rooms were kept tidy, (of course it was the customers’ responsibility to keep their own things tidy!) and you could be sure that you would have clean sheets because the housekeepers did a really good job. The building is not the newest, so you can't expect the same as newly built hostels, but everywhere is still clean and the places are taken care of! The vibe, other hostel customers, the size of the rooms, the bathrooms, activities, rooftop and friendly staff are the main reasons why I ended up staying in this hostel for several months, because the others I tested were just not as comfortable and homely 🥰

Place is great, reception are nice, close to a few of St. Kildas many bars and hotels, perfect distance from the beach and Luna Park, which was the fullest it's been since before lockdown this week, will always find parking, close to a huge and probably one of the nicest Woolies you've been in. I've only ever come around St. Kilda for work but currently staying at this place till I find a more permanent place here in St. Kilda. Love it

It's a proper hostel with a bar on the ground floor, super friendly staff and dirty rooms. Little bit small kitchen. Beautiful rooftop. Free welcome drink. You can do the checkout and they allow you to use the kitchen, storage and showers until 11 pm that day.

WOW where do I start, this was by far the worst accommodation I have ever stayed in! Due to the recent rain prior to our arrival I can only assume our room was water damaged as they moved us to an alternate room and the only positive was that they offered us a 50% discount. This should have triggered alarm bells as that is a significant discount just for a room change!! The carpet floors in the room were wet and the air was damp and rancid, when it did rain we could hear water dripping from the ceiling onto the damp carpet, the ceiling outside our bedroom door had caved in and had been covered with clear plastic, timber frames around doors were rotting from the damp, the power points in the bathroom did not work on day one but were working on day two (which is always a worry!!!!) a spring was broken in my mattress and poking through causing discomfort. Had we been able to find alternative accommodation at short notice I would have gladly moved but due to a major event in our area that was not possible. Within 2 days of returning home I was struck down with Bronchitis and off work for a week - clearly a result of the water damage, dirty humid air and damp carpets. This property should not be allowed to continue taking guests in its current condition, and any photos listed in the booking website I used are completely misleading!! I have only given it 1 star so that I could write a review, but it is not even worthy of 1 star. The staff were friendly and polite but I suspect most of them were transient backpackers just using the accommodation. They attempted to keep the place clean but it needs more than just a vacuum and mop to fix the problem!

Room was DIRTY. I understand it’s bcz of the people who live there, but man. The room smelled like mixing dead fish, smelly feet and alcohol. The club downstairs shaked my bed kinda loud. The guy lives in the room they don’t even close the toilet door when they are using it. OH MY GOD. The staff was very helpful, facilities are very prepared and all, good water pressure. But please, choose room wisely.

Summerhouse is so much better than when I was here 6 months ago - before it was very dirty and dingy in each room I stayed in. However, now I’ve come back to Melbourne the cleaners are in everyday and everyone is so friendly on the desk.

One of the best hostels I've been to! If you want to find a good community, Summer House is the place! I spent more than a month here and had a great time, lots of activities and nice people!

Rooms not cleaned, dirty kitchen and staff are not friendly. And there are crack heads here on drugs.

Had a great stay here, 4 bed mixed dorm. The room was clean and a good size, massive bathroom with a shower which was ideal. Staff are all friendly and very helpful. Bar downstairs next to reception which is lively and ideal if you are a solo traveller and looking to meet new people as everybody Is very welcoming. I would recommend a stay here and if I return to Melbourne I will be staying here again. Great value for money. Only negative was no plug socket next to my bed so had to charge my phone on the other side of the room

Friendly staff and happy go lucky environment. There were house keeping issues however this was rectified quickly by front staff so no need for them to miss out on a star for this ;-). Excellent location and an upbeat vibe with other guests. I wasn't in a great place facing some personal challenges leading up to my trip to Australia however the team were unfazed and even offered a listening ear at times which I was grateful for. Thank you again guys. If you let me stay again I promise to be less hassle and more fun haha. J. ;-----)

I have been at Summer House Backpackers for 3 months now and it has been none stop love and laughter! Summer House has provided me with a job and the reception staff have allowed me to move rooms so I can be with my friends and much more comfortable. Summer House is super clean, sociable and has lots of weekly activities to join in with. My time here has been so enjoyable and it has been my favourite hostel so far in Australia! Thank you so much to the team for making me feel so welcome 😊

  • 5/5 Kelly G. 1 year ago on Google
If you’re looking for a decent hostel in Melbourne, look no further! Summerhouse is perfectly located in the heart of St Kilda, so ideal for beach loving people who don’t want to be surrounded by the hustle & bustle of the CBD, yet the atmosphere is very vibrant and public transport to the center are just on the doorstep. It has the perfect balance between social activities and chill vibes and therefore it’s not a 24hour party place, so you can easily reside here while having a job. However if you feel like going for a bevvy or two, the Barkly next door is a really nice European style pub with delicious meals & very cheap drinks when you’re a hostel guest :D I absolutely loved my stay here and would go back in a heartbeat <3

This hostel has the worst customer service I've seen so far. There was a lack of communication between the staff which made our stay complicated and the manager had an attitude with us which is very inappropriate. They were not helpful at all and even made me uncomfortable to ask for anything. I would definitely recommend to stay somewhere else.
