REALLY COOL! If you walk the streets, you'll come across this ancient gate with a clock and a giant bell. It's a beautiful place for pictures and videos and even more impressive at night. There's some nice eateries around there too, so it's worth visiting.

Grosse Cloche is located a few minutes away from Victoire and Musée d’Aquitaine. It’s a well preserved medieval structure that comprises the classical style of Bordeaux. There are so many characteristic shops that sell cute and exotic home deco, clothing, or accessories along the alley leading to Grosse Cloche. You can sense the calmness and idyllic side of Bordeaux right after a turn from the busy shopping avenue in Victoire. It’s definitely a recommended district to take a walk around.

The Big Bell of Bordeaux PURCHASE ONLINE TOURS, EXCURSIONS, CITYPASS,... Introduction Practical information Location GROSSE CLOCHE REGISTERED MONUMENTS AND SITES The Grosse Cloche is one of the oldest belfries in France, in the heart of the city The Latin inscription on the inside of the Grosse Cloche (literally "Big Bell") reads "I ring the hours and my voice is a call to arms, (…) I sing for happy events and weep for the dead". The bell was cast in 1775 and weighs no less than 7,750 kilos! Christened "Armande-Louise", it rings 6 times a year for major celebrations such as Bastille Day, VE Day, and Remembrance Day and also the first Sunday of each month at noon. The gateway where the bell is hung also had a defensive function and served as a prison. Young people who misbehaved were confined there, shut in by a door 10 cm thick with enormous bolts. It was joked at the time that they stayed in the "Hotel du Lion d’Or" – an allusion to the weather vane on the central dome with a representation of a lion, symbolising the kings of England. This gateway is open for visits. A guide will show you the strange dungeons still haunted by the memory of people who did not respect curfew or public order.

Not only does it look good during the day but the small buildings around it have some nice detailing, the small streets off it are charming and it looks lovely at night when illuminated.

I didnt search for this place but I knew it already. And believe it or not, I found it accidentally :) which makes the "grosse cloche" my best. I tried to take the pictures for you, I tried to show you that made me love that place the most. I want to ride my horse to pass under where makes me feel like I am living in the medieval ages.

Very nice, but you might find it's not that grosse, especially in the early morning when it's cold. Better to see later in the day

Beautiful site. It's right in the middle of a set of streets so it's a bit difficult to get a picture, but still a good site to see. It's just something to look at from the street, not a place you enter or need tickets to see.

The old entrance into the old city which you must see. The area of shops and bars around is the most beautiful in Bordeaux

It's the photo you are required, by law, to take while in the city.

This is one of the famous landmark in bordeaux which has been built since medieval times. The big bell clock leads to a nice street saint catherine, full with shops.

Its a beautiful building to see and take a picture of. The architecture seems very typical of the other landmarks in Bordeaux. The bell only rings once a month now though, the first Sunday in the month. Definitely check out the little cafe just at the bottom of it too

A simple clock tower that had given so much character to the city. It's one of the few attractions in Bordeaux and thus a must see. It also has a cathedral at its base. The Grosse Cloche is one of the oldest belfries in France, in the heart of the city.

Really beautiful site, there was building work and scaffolding on one side though. Definitely worth seeing if you're at a loose end in Bordeaux. Nice cafés and shops around there.

Lovely surprise of the Grosse Cloche in the narrow lane and lively street. The building consists of the medieval bell, city wall and the church is well restored. Register on the website of the tourism center if you wish to visit the interior.
