I stayed at Ixchel with a group from my university this week. Everyone was extremely welcoming. The facility is clean and beautiful with outdoor and indoor locations for the 1 on 1 lessons. The school is located near a variety of restaurants and coffee shops, but honestly I didn’t want to go eat anywhere else because the food served at the school was very good. Before this trip I had never eaten Guatemalan cuisine, and now it is one of my favorites. My teacher, Araceli, did a great job of assessing my current Spanish speaking ability and constructing lessons to help improve in weak areas. She was a delight to learn from and really helped build my confidence. The school hosts an optional excursion each afternoon guided by a Spanish instructor. It was great to learn about the local history and continue practicing Spanish during these excursions. I would absolutely recommend Ixchel to anyone looking to improve their Spanish while staying in a beautiful city.

I did one week of study at Ixchel and really enjoyed it. Everyone there is so nice and the teachers are very patient and supportive. I learned a lot at the school and then being immersed in Spanish outside of the school was an extra bonus. I did 4 hours/day. With it being one-on-one I think more than that would be a bit tough mentally, but definitely doable. They also offered quite a few activities outside of class. I really enjoyed the salsa class. I chose to stay at a Homestay booked by the school. It was great. The host family was so nice and it provided extra Spanish practice. All-in-all this was a great experience. I would love to go back and study with them again sometime.

I had a great experience studying at Ixchel and living in a local homestay during the two weeks I spent in Antigua. My teacher Aura did a great job keeping 4 hours of daily 1-1 classes engaging with a variety of learning exercises and lots of conversation time as well as incorporating some more fun activities in the after-break session. I had a few other friends in Antigua who also took classes at the same time and all seemed to have a great experience with the school. Definitely a great value and a great learning environment! I also appreciate the office’s responsiveness and willingness to work with my schedule. The team was able to set me up with housing and classes on short notice and able to accommodate for things like needing to take a morning off and taking a long weekend to hike Fuego. Hope I can return again one day!

I have been looking for a way to have individual attention and conversations to improve my Spanish. I have taken Spanish classes for years, but still didn't feel comfortable conversing. Most of the classes focused on the rules of grammar, but I couldn't put the grammar into play until I could carry on a conversation. I was referred to Ixchel by a friend and I have found this to be the experience I have been looking for. My teacher at Ixchel is easy to talk to and is patient. She understands what level I'm at and is able to let me practice and then add in new info to move me to the next level. I have had 5 classes now and I feel much more comfortable conversing already. The Zoom program works very well to suit my needs. I highly recommend Ixchel.

It was a great two weeks staying at Ixchel Spanish School! Lots of laugh, especially at the mini concert with the students and staff. Also, the food at the school was delicious (and vegan!) the cooks were incredibly friendly, and my teacher was excellent. Don’t hesitate, you’ll learn a ton and have a great time doing it!

I stayed at Ixchel for 2 weeks and studied Spanish. I had an amazing experience. The host family and staff were friendly and welcoming. I had an amazing teacher, Lu. She was friendly, patient, and taught me so much. She took the time to get to know me and made sure I understood the lessons. I will definitely be back!

This was the best experience of my life! I stayed at the school with the most amazing family and now my new friends! I plan on coming again because my Spanish significantly improved thanks to my incredible teacher, Brenda! I miss Antigua so much and have already recommended this school to everyone I know! Everyone is so nice, the food is amazing, the culture is incredible, and the program is so organized! Thank you for everything!

Our family loved our two weeks at Ixchel. The four of us (2 adults, 2 kids ages 7 and 10) are four different levels of Spanish, and the school easily accommodated our individual needs as well as our family needs. Our homestay with a local family was a definite highlight. The Ixchel office team was always helpful, friendly, and responsive to our questions. The afternoon cultural activity options were great. Our teachers were the absolute best. Each of us made great progress and truly enjoyed the conversation and personal connections while being challenged to improve our language skills. Highly recommend Ixchel!

Cannot say enough great things about Ixchel. The teachers (I worked with Soledad, and my husband worked with Marlon) were absolutely incredible - so patient, kind, and intelligent. Scheduling was super flexible, classes are 1-1 (game changer!),and the learning areas outside are absolutely beautiful and cozy. We spent some class time at the school learning and some time out learning as we explored Antigua. This was an insanely valuable part of our learning (and really fun, too)! The women in the front office and every worker we met was welcoming, warm, and waited generously as we tried to spit out a few Spanish sentences that actually made sense, haha. It really did feel like family. Forever grateful for the whole experience especially with this being our first time learning in an official Spanish school!

I had a great time at Ixchel. My tutor was Paulina and she was great at helping me improve my Spanish. I already had a foundation and only spent a week there which was a good amount of time for me; however, if I had no background speaking Spanish, I would definitely spend more time there. I enjoyed the activities that were planned for us, especially the visit to the beach in which the tutors joined us. I opted to stay in a homestay, and I loved the family I was arranged with. They were super friendly!

Update 8/3/2023 I just finished my third time at Ixchel School. I came back for a three week refresher course and continuation of my study of verb tenses in Spanish. Once again, I enjoyed the school, my private room and bath, and the amazing food and comradery around the dining table with other students, teachers, and staff. I enjoyed reconnecting with my teacher, Aura, and continuing my growth as a spanish language speaker with her. Lourdes and her staff continue to create a welcoming dining experience. The office staff were accommodating and helpful. Muchas gracias por todo. 12/4/2022 Today, I finished three months of spanish classes at Ixchel Spanish School in Antigua! I have learned so much and have enjoyed my experience here at Ixchel, with my teacher Aura and the other staff members. My host family at the school, Lourdes and her daughters, have created wonderful food, even accommodating my vegetarian diet. Our conversations around the dining room table helped to immerse the students in the wonderful culture of Guatemala! I also enjoyed the various cultural outings and assistance with visits to other parts of Guatemala through the office. I highly recommend Ixchel Spanish School and the experience of learning and growing with other students!

I had a great experience here at Ixchel school! One on one sessions are an excellent way to learn Spanish at any level. Both my teachers were very attentive and patient, and they made me focus and learn what I was missing in my day-to-day Spanish so I fell much more confident now when I speak. The location is also very nice, great environment, and everyone is so welcoming.

I signed up for the 15 hours of one to one lessons. Having previously studied Spanish a number of years ago I wasn't sure where my knowledge of the language was at but thankfully Karla helped with me a quick written test. This helped Mollie, my tutor and I to establish where we should start from. I really enjoyed my time here and was made to feel part of the family. My spanish has improved significantly in a short space of time and I only wished I could stay longer. Upon speaking to some friends who attended other schools the content and materials given to me at ixchel seemed to be of a higher quality. I would therefore highly recommend joining a class at Ixchel.

After studying for three weeks at the Ixchel school I am sad to be leaving Antigua, I had such a wonderful experience learning Spanish here! Aura was my teacher and she was always polite, funny, and very knowledgeable. 100% recommend this for anyone who wishes to learn more about the culture and improve their Spanish skills! Thank you Ixchel for improving my Spanish and helping me learn more about the beautiful country of Guatemala!

Hi All. I just got back from a four weeks immersion course in Ixchel language school in Antigua. I was very surprised how much I progressed in my conversational Spanish in that short period. To make my stay efficient and to allow myself to focus on studying I chose the room and board option at the school. You can also opt to stay with a family if you wish. From the first day, you will be matched with a dedicated teacher, who will assess your level and will quickly map a study program for you, pending on your goals and objectives. In my case, it worked very well and we became quickly in Sync with each other. I noticed that all teachers at this school are very patient and very professional. If you stay at the school, the kitchen is run by a local family (Lourdes the mother, and Dania and Victoria her two daughters). You will definitely feel from the first encounter that you are among a warm Latino family. Antigua is a small city surrounded by volcanoes in southern Guatemala. It’s renowned for its Spanish colonial buildings, many of them restored following a 1773 earthquake that ended Antigua’s 200 year reign as Guatemala’s colonial capital. This city is a treasure and it’s people are very calm and respectful of tourists. I really enjoyed my stay in Antigua and I recommend IXchel school if you want to pursue Spanish Language studies. Ixchel is a great place to study Spanish. I participated in immersion classes on 2 different trips to Antigua and was very impressed with the instructors and the whole learning environment. The teachers are top-notch and one-on-one instruction is the way to go. The resources that the school provides, from full board lodging to excursions in the city and the region make the whole experience integrative and practical. I continue to have Skype lessons with my teacher weekly! I highly recommend Ixchel!

I am very grateful for the opportunity to study at the Ixchel Spanish School. The School is perfect for anyone wanting a quiet and serene place to study. I came to the Ixchel Spanish School knowing very little Spanish. Thanks to Marlon, Lourdes and the Ixchel staff, I believe I got a great foundation in Spanish. The staff is very patient and supporting in their efforts to foster learning Spanish. The meals and accommodations were excellent, and I felt comfortable and had all my needs met. I would recommend the school to anyone who is looking for a place to learn Spanish. I hope to return in the future for continued instruction and enrichment.

Spent a wonderful three weeks improving our Spanish skills at Ixchel School. My husband, myself and our 11 year old daughter had different levels of knowledge and were matched with perfect teachers for each of us. Miss Amelia, Miss Corina and Miss Ilse we’re knowledgeable, kind and fun! I would recommend Ixchel to all levels and ages! We want to go back soon.

I have been so pleased with my experience so far. When I started a few months ago, I could only speak in the present tense. So, on the first day, my teacher, Luis, taught me speak in past tense (preterito), and I have been adding tenses to my portfolio since. I am able to understand so much more in Spanish, and I am thrilled with the progress I am making. It is just the right combination of conversation, structured instruction in grammatical concepts, new vocabulary. A very enthusiastic 5 stars!

I have been taking online lessons at Ixchel weekly for almost a year now. It has been a great experience! I love that it is a one on one class, so you really get to spend time working on speaking in Spanish. The curriculum is well structured and my teacher was able to adjust the classes to my level of Spanish easily. My teacher is so nice and patient, and makes classes fun. I feel as though my Spanish has greatly improved and am looking forward to continuing my lessons. Highly recommended!

The school was welcoming and accommodating to my teen. They were flexible and always had great communication. The teacher was amazing and so friendly and helpful. She always adapted to what was needed and made lessons fun and engaging. This made it easy to learn and really motivating. I would highly recommend.

I had a marvelous experience at Ixchel Spanish school. The teachers are professional and patient. The staff goes above and beyond to accommodate the students in any way possible. Spanish learning and practice extended into mealtimes and cultural activities, all provided by the school. Anything you need, the staff and teachers and fellow students are there to help you. My only regret is that I could only stay for a week during the spring vacation. I absolutely want to go back, stay much longer, and maybe bring one or two of my relatives with me.
