A must-visit in Hakodate for the iconic city view, especially at night. Be prepared for crowds and plan your visit accordingly, arriving well before sunset or opting for a daytime visit. Dress warmly, especially during colder months.
Arrive 2 hours before sunset to secure a good viewing spot, but expect to share the space. Check for seasonal driving restrictions if planning to drive up. Consider visiting on a weekday to avoid peak weekend crowds. The ropeway is the recommended method of transport.
Night scenery is soo beautiful.
A famous night view of Japan.
Nice city view but that’s it .. it’s way too crowded up there with too many tourists.
The view was spectacular but very crowded.
I ran up and down it and it was so rewarding! Great views.

The Mt. Hakodate Observatory offers an incredible vantage point to witness the iconic night view of Hakodate City, often regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world. The best time to visit is just before sundown, allowing you to enjoy the stunning transition from sunset to the dazzling city lights below. However, the site is extremely popular and often crowded with tourists, so be prepared to share the space and remain respectful to others enjoying the view. Make sure to wear warm clothing, especially during cooler seasons, as the wind can be chilly at the peak. Fun fact: this location is featured in the anime Detective Conan (Case Closed), adding a layer of excitement for fans. Despite the crowds, the unforgettable scenery makes this a must-visit spot in Hakodate. The best way to reach this place is by Mt. Hakodate Ropeway (cable car). You may also drive to the summit but there are seasonal restrictions so research about that before going.
Mount Hakodate observatory is a must-visit destination, especially during the clearer nights when you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the city. The observatory offers stunning nighttime screens, while the ropeway provides a fast and convenient way to reach the top.
Nice city view but that’s it .. it’s way too crowded up there with too many tourists trying to there at the same time around sunset.
We were in the hurry going through, but it had a great 360 view of Hakodate area. We wish we found some posts that tells you what we are looking at though
Visited on a Sunday and it was not that crowded. Nice view from the mountain. Slightly slippery when walking out. There’s a souvenir shop, restaurant and take out store in the waiting area before boarding the ropeway. There’s also a row of capsule machine. I was very shock that an empty capsule fell out when I turned it. Informed the staff and she was very efficient and kind. She opened the whole machine and asked me to choose the one that I liked! Thank you🥲
Hakodate is such a beautiful city and the ropeway is a the best way to experience of the best night views and views in Japan. I headed up around 3pm and soon after it was absolutely packed so the earlier you arrive the better. Managed to find a good spot at least for some photos, including on the way back down on the ropeway.
Have to come up here at least once if you're around the area, went up around sunset and stayed until the first tinge of darkness came in the horizon. There were quite a lot of people on the observation deck and around the area, and there was broadcasted warning that the way down was gonna be very crowded. Took us 15 mins to queue up to go up, went down without queueing at all. Only had the nice view on the way down because everywhere else was blocked by stupid tourists who basically cock blocked the area where you could see the whole town.
Nice spot with breathtaking views over the city and towards Aomori and Honshu island. We took a taxi up (the cable car was under maintenance), which cost around 2000¥ from the base of the mountain. At the top, there are a number of vistas, though these are quite small so may be congested at busier times. As an extra treat, try the banana coffee from the vending machine near the top. (You can thank me later!)
The Hokkaido Mountain Observatory, worth a trip If you really want to get a fantastic view of Hakodate, you must go up to the conservatory atop the Hakodate Mountain There is a choice of the rope car, (cable car) or you could like we did, take a leisurely drive up! There is also the opportunity to hike up the mountain which isn’t that difficult if you are in shape, your legs play along, we came across quite a few such souls! It is definitely worth the visit, as you get an amazing view almost 360 degrees of Hakodate, and the seas! All major TV stations have their masts there, but around is a wonderful walkway, and the highest view point is on top of the souvenir shop/cable car entrance! But the best is to just enjoy a few shots of the scenery, we loved it! #sapporo #Japantravels #MarketAdventures #gourmettravels #selfdrivingholidays #hokkaido #hakodate #hakodateobservatory
A famous night view of Japan. The view was spectacular but very crowded. We had to go there 2 hours prior to sunset. Even so, we still couldn't find a good viewing spot. After waiting for the sun set for 2 hours, the view we got was above the other shoulder or head. When we traveled back down it was also chaotic.
Stunning panoramic view and easy access via the ropeway. We didn’t stay for the night view as it was quite windy that day and we were worried the ropeway might close early — which it did while we were up there. Luckily, it wasn’t crowded at all, and we were so glad we went up earlier instead of exploring the area first. The daytime scenery was absolutely beautiful and worth the trip!
Was a weekend holiday. Super crowded evening. Besides the night scene of the town, u can also get nice pics of sunset on opp direction. If u want seats, book early for the cafe or restaurant. Else suggest early or late dinner.
Went up by self-driving after 10pm, via a dark and narrow path up to the hill. A brilliant night view. I’d like to come again under sunshine. Be sure to wear windbreaker or anything to keep you warm.
I ran up and down it and it was so rewarding! Great views, option for food, drinks, dinner after 4pm, and gifts.
I love this place. Night scenery is soo beautiful. Best place to go as a couple when you visit hakodate. Make sure to go during the day time too. But it'll be a bit cold on the top during winter months. Really recommend visiting during Autumn, winter and spring.

This northern region provides a mild summer escape and world-class powder snow in winter, complemented by delicious fresh seafood, local specialties, and the unique culture of its indigenous Ainu people
I went on a Tuesday evening at 4:30PM in November. The bus was packed on the way there, and while the line was long, it moved efficiently. Plan to wait outside in the cold if you come in the colder months (and if you come for the night time views). I was only outside for about ten minutes before the line made its way into the warm building. The staff is very efficient in managing the large crowds. This is a must see if you are in Hakodate. One of the most beautiful views I've ever seen! Be sure to bundle up and bring a good camera.
The view on the Mt.Hakodate is remarkable but as the other tourist keep pushing you from the back starting from the evening. You may get a little grumpy as people are packed like sardines.
