Where do I even start? This is by far the BEST restaurant I have stepped foot in, in a very long time. My boyfriend and I were in Halifax on a getaway trip. We stopped in for dinner around 6:20pm on Saturday night, not knowing that they were actually closed. We walked in and they offered to still serve us. They were extremely friendly and kind. The food though!!! You guys!!! I have no words for how delicious it was. We enjoyed it so much, that we returned in the morning for their breakfast as well haha. Which was also just as delicious. We had the pleasure of chatting with Mary, herself and some other people that worked there. They are the nicest people. It was lovely chatting with them. I can't wait to go back to Halifax just to eat there again. I'd like to note that the person that commented the 1 star below this review is just a bitter person. When we walked into Mary's the first time, they stated that their dine in was closed to the public due to Covid restrictions. (It's not a very big establishment). So there are no restrooms open to the public in this restaurant until they deem appropriate. So Karen, have a seat. Trying to take down a local establishment for having protocols and rules in place is just tacky.

I've been to a handful of african restaurants in my lifetime but none like Mary's African Cusine. The food here was seasoned to perfection and they have a good selection of veggie/vegan friendly options. I ordered the veggie plate (3 curries + rice...plantains are an extra) and the veggie roti. Everything was fresh and decently priced. Can't wait to go back soon 🤤. Don't forget to ask for a bit of their 👌 hot sauce

Wonderful place for some authentic African cuisine. Tried the rice bowl (veggie bowl with 3 curries) and the fried plantain (must-try). Mary also has several breakfast options, and is very friendly to talk to and made us feel at home. Place has several vegan options too.

In one word, phenomenal. Particularly if you love spicy food. The oxtail is sublime. The jollof rice is spiced to perfection. Ask for a side of hot sauce, you won't regret it! Extremely small eat-in space, so takeout is recommended.

My experience here was good. I went in to get some breakfast as it said all day breakfast on the outside but they were actually out and I decided to pick up something else which I'm glad I did. I had the grilled chicken with spinach and pumpkin seeds with lentil rice and it was amazing. Lots of beautiful faces and also menu options to keep you coming back for more. I actually left my wallet somewhere in the store and the person at the front actually carried it to me while I was eating. I am so grateful. Will visit again

First time trying the cuisine. I was pleased with the chicken yassa, would definitely get it again and recommend to a friend. The roti was also good. All the condensation made it soggy though.

Chef Mary and her daughter are quite a team! We were WOWED!! The Egusi stew with beef and groundnut soup with chicken were delicious. We were advised that the soup was spicy, and it was; but rather than being it too spicy, our senses were overjoyed by the flavors! Yum!!! If we lived in Halifax, we’d be regular customers. The space is small, so if you are planning to dine in, which we did, you may have a short wait or can share a table. You can also reserve on-line. The food is prepared to order and we waited 20 minutes which wasn’t long at all. We’d happily wait double that for Mary’s delicious food. We returned for dinner today because the food was so mouthwateringly delicious. Once again, Mary’s food is the tastiest, most flavorful we have eaten in Nova Scotia. The Grilled Chicken with black-eyed peas and lentil rice and Chicken Yassa with spinach and pumpkin seed and Jollof rice were YUMMY. Thank you!!

Loved the veggie platter! All vegan. I chose curry rice as my side and fried plantains, stewed cabbage and black-eyed peas as my three veg dishes. Wish I lived in Halifax! Just so delicious. I would be coming every day!

The food tastes amazing! So incredibly flavourful. Even though there was an issue with the online order payment, the staff worked it out and still served us our food. Would definitely come here again!

This place is fantastic. I just ate the grilled chicken, spicy rice and cabbage. It was amazing, i would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone. There is a wide range of food and the service is quick and friendly. The price is very fair, the portion size is great and the atmosphere was welcoming.

Incredibly delicious food! I wished that I lived closer so that I could visit this place twice a week. Don't miss the plantains. The goat stew was absolutely phenomenal.

Location is good, in downtown, hours are a bum though. They are only open till 7 PM so have an early dinner or take out. Food’s amazing. I’m not African but the dishes here remind me of home!! Don’t have a complaint about their main ones(those are amazing) but meat balls were too dry (equivalent to meat puffs but drier powdery filling). I took takeout on both occasions, staff didn’t even smile or look friendly, may be they are tired from long day. I don’t expect small talk (though it’s quite common in Canada) but atleast greeting or acknowledging the customers is welcome. First time was ruder than second though i tipped for first time so didn’t feel like tipping for second time. No complaints about food but overall experience is mixed leaning on positive for me.

Delicious African restaurant. The meals are amazing. Many choices of meats, but many vegan and gluten-free options available. They also have a breakfast menu, ideal combination to start your day! The service is great. I loved it and will come back anytime!

Incredible food in a simple setting. Saw this restaurant while walking by and decided to give it a try. Had the goat stew. Very spicy and delicious but recommend a refreshing Red Stripe beer to cut through the heat. My friend had the oxtail. Equally delicious, not spicy. Highly recommend this Halifax treasure!

Really delicious food and their vegan options are great! We had vegan stew with fufu and vegetarian platter. The juices and coconut water are also great.

AFRICAN GOLD! Authentic, delicious, healthy, flavourful. There’s not much else to say. One of the few mom and pop shops with Mary herself behind the counter. We had the Goat Stew w/ Garri Fufu (cassava). My wife had the veggie platter - my lord. So savoury, spicy and sweet all in one meal. Go visit this place !!!
