Stay away from this hotel. The pictures are nothing like the reality. The minute you walk in side the hotel you’ll be blinded by the bright fluorescent cool lights inside the interior of the hotel which shows every ugly details of cracks on the walls and floors. The funny part is that these ugly light bulbs are placed on beautiful expensive looking chandeliers. The furniture looks beaten up and old. The front desk staff are nice but they look tired. They are not well groomed. You would expect this hotel with that much history to have better services. They need to do major maintenance and repairs. The elevators are so slow, old, and some have key scratched graffiti seen through a cheap paint job. The first room they gave us was so bad and depressing. Giant room with a small old bathroom with a scratched & beaten up door. The ac/heater was an old unite sticking out the window. The curtains were not customized for their windows. There are huge gaps between each window which did not serve the purpose for blackout curtains. In general, for the price you’re paying, you would expect much better quality of a hotel. While having breakfast in the morning in the main dinning room, they play old 90’s pop/R&B music which doesn’t go with the theme of a hundred year old hotel. I feel bad for the staff, because they are only here to work and they always get the complaints from customers as we have witnessed in several occasions of our stay at Lord Nelson Hotel.

EXTREMELY overrated hotel. the rooms are old and outdated with all doors/ drawers / cabinets / closets and anything wooden smelling and feeling grungy and stale. these are also all misaligned or extremely hard to close/open, constantly getting stuck and needed excessive force to actually pull open or push closed. there are no typical touches you'd find in hotels in this price range - things like robes or slippers are nonexistant. the bathroom experience overall is a bad one - the shower and sink were both clogged. the bathroom also has many stains and the curtain is tinted yellow and feels unhygienic. overall the room felt super outdated and icky with ac sporadically working. the walls are also super thin so you can hear every tiny sound anyone makes. for being the most expensive hotel in the city, the experience was not a pleasant one at all. you could spend half as much and have a much nicer stay. this hotel could use major room renovations to give it a fresh/clean/modern feel while preserving the modern charm of the lobby and hallways which are really the only redeeming qualities.

My rating is based on: room, location, noise, ease of stay, and value for money. Room: was nice and relatively clean. There was grim and dust on the baseboards, not a huge deal but expected cleaner. Location: good, close to the public gardens and the citadel, however there is a lot of partying and transient populations screaming and yelling. The noise in the rooms was a lot, and kept me up. Ease of stay: yes this is an old building but the elevator waits were so excessive that people started getting in the elevators to go up just to go down. We were walking up and down flights of stairs because of this. None of the staff were wearing face masks, as is not mandated, but were shaming us for wearing masks. I have an anxiety disorder, and need to wear a mask. I don’t need to be shamed and mocked for this. Value for money: one night was reasonable, the other night was about triple the price because a wedding was in the hotel. Had we of known, for noise even, we would have stayed elsewhere. For a place that cost around $700 for two nights, with parking an extra $30/day, and no breakfast, I feel this was over priced and not worth the money. Bottom line: it wasn’t the worst place I’ve ever stayed but it wasn’t enjoyable and I felt like it wasn’t worth the money.

I often wonder whether hotel owners actually have ever stayed in the rooms of their hotel when you see all of the little details missing. Such is certainly not the case at the Lord Nelson. A beautiful, well appointed room in a building that maintains its rich history. All of the small details are taken care of such as blackout blinds and convenient outlets throughout. A huge thanks to the friendly and accessible staff for accommodating us at the last minute.

A few years ago I stayed at this hotel for one night. I feel that you need to be very careful checking your credit card and what is held back. After checking out I had a business meeting in St Andrew’’s NB. I use a business credit card with a relatively small amount of credit to prevent fraud. I went to check into my hotel and for some reason my credit card was denied. Comes to find out “The Lord Nelson “ held back $1500.00 for a one night stay without any prior notice. I would like to say that was the end of the story but it wasn’t. That amount of $1500. stayed on my card for three weeks. The Hotel is average to good but they will never get my business again or anyone I represent.

Dated rooms. The bed and finishes are updated and nice but the bathrooms are shockingly small and feel like you are stepping back into the 1920s. Does not feel luxurious at all. Needs a reno desperately. Not great value for money but good location. Overnight street parking is also very do-able.

I was nervous about booking this hotel as I’ve never been to it before. Although an employee named love had welcomed us in with a kind smile helped with luggage when he put them in our room. The hotel was extremely fancy and the elevators were extremely fast. Another employee named Jonathan was really nice, as he spoke to my children kindly and at the end organized and put our bags in our car. He also kindly offered to help a lot! We needed a microwave and asked the receptionist in the lobby, who said they’d have someone bring one up to the room. Another employee was sent to our room to bring it, he even connected it for us. He was super kind and also later on brought up forks to our room when we asked. Yes. Forks. They went all the way to floor nine to get us forks. I love that they go through so much work for the simplest things. Although they had no pool when we asked, the receptionist offered to give my kids the YMCA passes for the one nearby for free. On my checkout when I met the hotel coordinator Chantelle , as soon as she was told I am a local guide . Decided to give me a tour of the hotel’s Decoration history which i found fascinating. The room was clean and amazing! We loved our stay here, and hope they have a chain.

Beautiful hotel! The staff are so friendly and helpful. My room was spacious, comfy bed. Ideal location. The walls are on the thin side so i could hear my noisy neighbors. There wasnt much in the way of drawer space for my clothes. I’d stay here again

The staff at the Lord Nelson are phenomenal. There were some issues with our booking that they helped straighten out, the housekeeping staff are great, and they gave us a complimentary bottle of wine for our wedding anniversary. We even extended our stay here. Top notch service. Would stay here again!

Had an amazing experience in this hotel. Staff are very nice and kind. The hotel is clean and we got great accommodations. My fiancé and I fell in love with this hotel. We planned to elope in Peggy’s cove but when we saw the hotel we changed our mind to get married here instead. It was so worth! It’s gorgeous and our elopement was beyond perfect! Thanks to all the staff and management for making it possible. They are so sweet! I would come back here again if we visit Halifax in the future. I have nothing to say but good things about this hotel ❤️❤️❤️❤️

The hotel was a wonderful stay! There was a small issue with the bath as it was clogged, and it was quickly resolved by the hard working cleaning staff! Kudos to them for keeping the place as clean as possible!! It was also a pleasure to know that our hotel was upgraded from a Queen's to a King's for no added costs! And on top of cleaning and fixing the bathtub quickly, they also provided us with a free wine bottle as an apology!! They truly respect their clientele here!! The location is absolutely perfect as it's right downtown next to all of the attractions and restaurants. Beautiful garden right next door, and the fort within walking distance. Lots of electric scooters also makes travel super easy across the city!!

We stay in a lot of hotels when we travel for work. By far The Lord Nelson has been the best one. This incredible hotel helped to restore my road weary self. This hotel was a true blessing for us. It was clean, well lit and invited guests to relax. The staff are so friendly; they speak well, dress appropriately and treat guests respectfully and with good manners. The room was a slice of heaven for we road weary travellers. Incredibly clean, well spaced out. I loved the coffee area ( such a welcome change). The coffee is excellent too! The personal care products available in the bathroom were remarkable. I felt restored, clean and comfortable. The scent was perfect for me. The bed was amazing. The mattress was perfect, as were the pillows and sheets. And I especially appreciated that the bed was easy to get in and out of without having to hop up or down (I am a short lady). I hope we can stay here again, in future.

Great accommodations, but it’s really the staff that made our stay amazing. Customer service is what makes loyal clients and that’s why we will 100% come back to this hotel the next time we’re in town. Management should do everything in their power to nurture this amazing team.

5 stars for the location, cleanliness and atmosphere. Most of the staff members were extremely nice and helpful, except the check-in lady. Very clean, beautifully decorated, and well maintained hotel. Everything you have to visit during a short stay in Halifax is very close. Staying here, although it cost more than what we would usually book, saved us money and especially saved us time. Traffic in downtown Halifax is crazy, so being able to walk instead of driving was a huge plus.

Bad experience with front desk. Left hotel on morning of last day without checking out and realized i left something in room i needed. Phoned front desk and they assured me they would retrieve it for me and hold for my return. Come back 2 hours later and front desk says sorry but we forgot to write down your room number when you called so we didn't do it. ARRRGGGG. I had to find the lady who cleaned my room and go through her garbage to get the item. That was fun. Manager has stupid sheepish look when informed and wasn't helpful. He did mumble sorry so all good. Not. For 500 bucks a night i expect better.

Great location across from the public gardens. Super friendly and helpful staff. Rooms were nicely renovated and very comfortable. Also had a cool mail shoot. Had brunch in the pub as well, delicious croissant french toast!

The Lord Nelson was as good as you would like it. The staff were happy to help and took great care of us during our stay. I hop we get a chance to go back and spent some time. Don Hunter

The Lord Nelson was a perfect spot to land after flying into Halifax for the first time. The front desk staff are incredibly accommodating and friendly, and allowed this weary traveler to do a very early check-in. The location is very central and in walking distance of all the downtown desireables. The rooms are comfortable, the petite room perfect for a solo traveler. Would recommend to anyone looking for a short term central stay in Halifax.

Stayed 3 nights. Great location, friendly staff. Provided extras not in the room such as a shower cap, extra milk and creams for nespresso machine with regular coffee and no decaf. Sure the view is another building but we were there to sleep. Close to breakfast at Cora's, and/or Tim's and McDo's. A short walk down to the harbor front. Pick up from the airport is worth it when a flat rate taxi is $72 + tip. We would stay here again.

We stayed here on our anniversary trip and fell in love with this hotel! The staff were all extremely friendly and very helpful. I had mentioned when booking that it was our anniversary and they went above and beyond to ensure that we enjoyed our stay, and even left a card for us (along with some treats) when we got to our room. Everything was spotless and the hospitality team made sure it stayed that way. The only drawback is that it's a little difficult to get into the parking garage during rush hour, but we didn't have too hard a time. It's in a very central location so it was easy to walk wherever we needed to go within downtown Halifax.

Front desk was not helpful at all. Welcomed me with a cold face. Spent about half hour to check in. They charged a different price than what I had received through my email and told me the extra is charged by the city. I have travelled around NS for a week and never heard about this. Hard to manage my bookings online or have a clear understanding of my invoice. Do not book directly with the hotel because then you have no one to make a complaint. Bad customer services. Room was outdated. Wifi was slow. Not worth the money.

Our room was clean and nicely appointed. The view was not much outside the window, but we didn't mind. The restaurant food was very good and served in a relaxing setting. The staff was great. The location was good with easy walkability. I walked to Pier 21 and the Nova Scotia Archives. The public gardens across the street from the hotel are beautiful to visit. We will definitely stay here again the next time we're in town.

The hotel is gorgeous, and the rooms were very nice. Our concern was with the all-night partying of other guests. We had people talking loudly in the hallways until 4:30am, even after numerous calls to the front desk asking them to remedy the situation. We had to cancel our last night at the hotel because the noise and partying in the common spaces (halls, elevators...) were just too much. On the up side, the hotel did provide a prompt refund when we cancelled our room, but the staff did not seem interested in quelling the partying.

I do not recommend staying here. I called to see if they would match the online price I found, so they wouldn’t have to pay commission to another company. They told me their direct price with a CAA discount was going to be $2 more than my online booking price, so I figured I’d pay the $2 and save them paying a third party commission fee. They failed to mention this price was before taxes, even after I told them my price.. so I ended up paying about $35 extra because I was trying to help the hotel save money. When I called to inquire, they couldn’t care less. When I checked in, the front desk told me the restaurant was opened until 1am for dine in and room service. When I went to the restaurant, I found out this was a lie and they closed at 10pm for both dine in and room service. I was woken up numerous times early in the morning by the cleaners standing outside my door having long conversations. I was also woken up a few times during the night hearing water loudly running through pipes from other rooms. I know this is an old hotel, but they definitely need to update their soundproofing. I was supposed to be given a 1pm check out so I could get a decent sleep before my overnight flight. At 12:05pm the cleaners were banging on my door. A few minutes later my phone was ringing with the front desk asking me to check out. I work at a hotel and we would never harass guest to check out minutes after the usual checkout time, especially when we approved a late checkout. There are dozens of homeless people living in tents about one minute from the hotel. So expect lots of drug addicts hanging outside asking for change and cigarettes as soon as you walk outside. There are many other hotels in the city, and I highly recommend staying at one of them instead of The Lord Nelson..

Such history and beauty. Located in Downtown Halifax within walking distance to everything- foodstore, restaurants and transit. The rooms are lovely and the staff are wonderful!! Food is very good as well. The staff is the 'icing on the cake'. ❤❤

Loved our stay. Location made walking everywhere super easy. Huge thick towels, fluffy pillows, very clean rooms (shout out to the housekeepers for doing a great job!). Loved the in-room kettle. Will definitely go back.

Hotel has some classic historical features while not appearing entirely dated. Rooms have been renovated and are clean. The pillows were not to my liking and, personally, I find this a critical element for a good night's sleep. Otherwise, the staff was friendly and the hotel is ideally located within walking distance to the water and local restaurants. We ordered room service for breakfast and the food was mediocre but the coffee was fantastic.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The room was great, the one thing I really would have wished for is an outlet by the side table so I could charge my phone next to me while I sleep. The location is completely amazing, cannot be beat for downtown accommodations! The restaurant was excellent for both service and taste.

My husband and I just spent 7 weeks at the Lord Nelson while he had cancer treatment! There aren’t many words to describe this Hotel. When u walk in the u walk back in time when hotels were wood and marble not tin and glass. It’s beautiful. The rooms were awesome with wide screen smart TVs I hooked my Netflix off my phone to ! The beds were comfy snd spotless. The staff inside snd out are remarkable! It made leaving bitter sweet. We were anxious to get home of course , but sad to leave the new friends we made. ! I recommend you have to try this Hotel u won’t be disappointed!

Had an amazing stay! Great service and staff is very friendly! Read some reviews about no fitted sheets on the beds!!! Who cares!! And as for bad ratings for housekeeping being loud, we stayed 2 night and didn't even know they were on the floor unless you left the room or knocked on the door to ask if we needed anything! Very quiet and efficient. Beds were comfy and rooms very clean and nice. Met a man named Morris who played the grand panio in the mezzanine area and and he wanted me to put a good word in and get them to hire him😉😉 so Morris if you see this there ya go you have hands of an angel and made my stay more enjoyable with your sweet music!!!

Incredible stay here! Super clean room, had everything I needed. Easy check in and out, best staff hands down in every area! Breakfast at The Arms was the perfect end to a fabulous stay... Can't wait to stay again...

Very beautiful and historic building. Incredibly clean rooms and great service. If you however want to sleep beyond 8 am, forget it. Loud talking, doors banging, vacuum cleaners running all outside your room door as early as 7 am. This is true for most hotels so try your best to get a corner room where things “might” be quieter or go with a suit so you have a separate bedroom inside your suit with an extra door you can close to insulate from the sound.

Nice location. Close to everything you need. Room wasn't anything special. Bit expensive for what you get. Interior in the lobby was really nice and pretty but that was it. Was given mismatching informations all of the time. There were no common understanding between the staff. I wanted a late check out was told the only way was to book an extra night. That was 300$. Then I spoke to another person who said I could have a late check out for 100$. But I already booked an extra night. Spent a lot of time rearranging that and when I had to pay for the late check out, all of sudden it was 150$. I did not accept that and after some while staff agreed on the original 100$. Nicest people was the cleaning staff.

Room and hotel is generally clean. This is an old hotel so keep that in mind. Walls are thin, rooms are a tad smaller and no fan in the bathroom. The location is great. You are in the center of everything happening and within walking distance of all the attractions. We had a few issues with our key not working on our door. Didn't get an explanation for it, just a "it's all good" from the staff. Overall the hotel is good for the price, front staff could use some training on etiquette. Cleaning staff was excellent.

  • 2/5 Dian M. 1 year ago on Google
Room was nice and quite clean. Check in was easy but parking is $32/day…we parked in public lot around corner for $11/day. Hair dryer is a joke for women just hot air with no volume. I wanted to be near the public garden which is beautiful but head east to harbour and it’s dirty dirty dirty. Elevator out of order created long wait times with absolutely no Covid safety restrictions but I guess they are following government guidelines however 6 or 8 people doesn’t seem safe. I think for the $700 we paid for 2 nights you could get better value closer to the boardwalk

We stayed here by luck of the draw through Hotwire, Aug 27-29. We upgraded to the suite and the room was very spacious and comfortable. The service from our guest experience host, Emily, was absolutely fabulous. She is one of a kind and made sure to go above and beyond to enhance our experience. The food from room service was delicious. The added birthday gift at the end of our stay was a wonderful, unexpected touch. Thank you for the stay.

I chose to stay here for three reasons: 1. Price 2. Location 3. Dog friendly. I am happy I ended up staying here as the staff were super friendly. Actually, I booked via phone and the first person I interacted with from The Lord Nelson was really nice. My only issue: our room was small and had a view of the neighbouring building's HVAC system. Other than that, everything was great. I would consider staying here again next time I visit Halifax.

We had a lovely stay at the Nelson. It is well located near tons of dining options and local attractions. Service is top notch; decor is exceptional considering the age of the building, kudos to the maintenance team to keep it up. Parking is available and right next door ( indoor access). Restaurant on site was one of the best meal we had while in Nova Scotia which is very convenient. I would definitely stay there again.

Great location for downtown walking. Amazing hospitality! Every staff I encountered were polite and professional. 10 out of 10 for customer service. Rooms were very quiet. Slept wonderfully. Will definitely be returning

We stayed 3 nights at Lord Nelson and our stay was absolutely perfect. The entire staff was so helpful and accommodating to any request that we had. Room was great, the location is perfect and everything is in walking distance. We enjoyed having the pub on site as well! Highly recommend this hotel!

Great location if you want to be in downtown core! Older hotel with so much charm and grace. Rooms are a bit smaller than newer hotels. My room although cozy was small, had to step between toilet and counter to shut the bathroom door! Bed was like sleeping on a cloud. Loved that window was able to open to get some fresh air. Great view of the park. Still a lovely hotel just remember some rooms from a different era space wise :)

On-site underground paid parking. Which smells amazing! Not sure what is pumped into the air but it's so clean. Doesn't smell like a parking garage at all. The entrance into the hotel is breathtaking. The chandeliers, gold accents, ceilings, art, seating etc.. it's stunning. We had the suite and were welcomed with a nice arrival gift. My only complaint is the bathroom was really small, didn't have a fan and the bottom of the bathtub was uneven and spongy, it was weird. The on site restaurant I highly recommend.! Food and service and fantastic. Across the street from The Public Gardens, a must see.

  • 3/5 Denise H. 1 year ago on Google
The location is great, close to restaurants, tourist attractions, medical centers and many businesses. Underground parking us avaliable for quite a high rate, but it is convenient. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The daily rates are very expensive. I really liked that there were no carpets in the rooms, they look much cleaner. The bathroom was much to small and did not have a fan, making showering very claustrophobic and uncomfortable. The bathroom was also dingy looking, I'm not sure if it is because it's old and needing repair or in need of a good cleaning. It is quite loud in the hotel all through the night. The walls are thin and people in the hallways and rooms are easily heard, along with the traffic and noise from outside. There is a restaurant on site, but there are much better options close by for eating. The best thing about the hotel is the location.

Our room was nice. It was clean and had lots of space. We were upgraded for a small fee. The Front desk was consistently helpful. The view was ok. The location was fantastic! Excellent stay!Good price. Recommended!

Beautiful suite. They upgraded us for no cost. We had the package with wine, charcuterie tray, and 100$ food voucher . The brisket and seafood chowder were amazing. A little pricey but the experience was wonderful all around.

I'd say it's a nice hotel but it's missing a few key features; bathroom exhaust fan, bedside lamps that you can turn on and off without having to get out of bed and walking 10 feet, plugs near the bed, wires hanging freely under the desk, and a couple more issues. Also, skip the mixed drinks, 3 rye and gingers without so much as a buzz in their bar. Nice looking but looks only go so far. No breakfast. I'll be staying at the Delta or the Marriott for my weekend getaways. Maybe these comments will help your stay a little better.

Front desk staff was adorable. Breakfast was terrible...paper bag with yoguart...l don't eat dairy....a super hard apple...cereal bar...and cranberry juice. The menu does not change from day to day. Housekeeping staff...incredibly intent on rushing us out. Check out is noon....3 times before 1130 they came to the door and asked what time we were leaving. We had arranged a late 1230 check out. It was a blizzard! Roads were not plowed and police were advising stay off the roads. If l lived close..l would not need a hotel room...my drive involved highways that were not safe...not my opinion...RCMP opinion. We left at 12:29....only to discover we were not alone. Housekeeper had harassed others on our floor.

The location of the hotel was so convenient. It was right beside the public garden and minutes away from downtown core and the water front. When I first arrived, I was greeted by a doorman who assisted me to the counter. Fortunately, for me I was able to check in early because there was a room available. The bar located downstairs was aesthetically pleasing in the staff was very kind . Definitely would recommend and definitely would stay here again .
