It’s a fantastic restaurant where you can have authentic Korean and Japanese food in Halifax. Not only is the price of the food affordable, but food is very well-portioned. The staff, especially the one with tattoos on her left sleeve, were super sweet and willing to help as much as they could, smiling all the time. I love the vibe and aesthetic atmosphere here, which is very hip. Strongly recommend this hot spot!

This was the best food of our entire Halifax trip. It tasted delicious ad came out so fast. The menu helps you decide with all the beautiful photos, but also makes you want to order everything! And the taste did not fail. I would go back here everyday next time I am in Halifax. Do yourself a favour and try this on your first day, instead of the mistake I made by trying it on my second last day. Also, the waitress was very kind and friendly to us and every single other table around us! She told us about her recent trip to Toronto and was very gracious.

Easily one of the best Japanese food experiences in the city, down to the presentation. With such a varied menu there are a lot of great options to choose from. The selection of Sake and other drinks is also large enough that it makes sure that you always have a unique experience.

Went here for lunch last Thursday and I had a great time. The decor was charming. We had paper lanterns hanging over our table, and the window beside us looked like a cool repurposed garage door. They also had a catchy city pop playlist to really set a relaxing atmosphere. As for the food, most items were in the $10-20 range. The omurice is very pleasing to look at and I am a fan of the sauce. The chirashi bowl was even better because each cut of fish was really savory and fat which helped me appreciate the alternating bites between rice and fresh fish. I recommend the super creamy and decadent korokke as an appetizer. Our server was attentive and it didn't take long for our food to be served on a not-so-busy afternoon (maybe like 10-15% occupancy at the time). Overall service was good. 🫶 I rated it 4/5 for now because I think Kanpai Izakaya has another level I've yet to experience. The place honestly looks primed for a fun night out. Can't wait to revisit for a late dinner!!

Place: Chick and cool decorations. Love their Japanese lantern hanging overhead. Food: Perfect temperature, hot from stove, authentic Japanese taste. Price: $7-$10 for appetizers. $15-$22 per dish for A La Carte. Portion: Small portion for me. It is my personal issue. But i have to find something to eat more after that.

I ordered salmon poke for pick up. I paid $23 (including tax and tips). First thing I was concerned about was the portion size. Little did I know it would be so small. They could certainly put at least more rice. The bowl is half empty, or half full if you will. All the ingredients were fresh, had good texture, but I certainly needed some sauce. Imho, the taste was a bit dull without it. Do they have sauce options? I wasn’t offered and did think of asking about it. I enjoyed it. Oh silky salmon, it was delicate and delicious. Would I pay the same price again for the same bowl? Probably not. Only if it was bigger and with sauce options.

Very rarely do you experience something so incredible that you regret not experiencing it sooner. That was my dining experience at Kanpai Izakaya. If ever there was a place I could put at the top of a hidden gems list for Halifax, this would be it, by an absolute landslide. Food is top notch, authentic Japanese comfort food - It will never disappoint, it is simply perfect. The service is attentive, friendly, and spot on, always there right when you think you might need them. But what takes Kanpai Izakaya to a tier of its own is the atmosphere this restaurant is able to curate. You enter and feel like you've walked into a small family run restaurant/bar off a quiet side street in Kyoto. It's warm, interesting, comfortable, and somewhere you will want to spend hours (there's lots of Sapporo to keep you company too). It also feels as though the restaurant has not been fully discovered. And as much as I would hate to have trouble getting a table, it would be a shame if people didn't experience Kanpai Izakaya. Absolutely blown away by this place, there's no excuse not to try it. 11/10, just sublime.

LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Highly recommend!! Me and my boyfriend went here earlier this month and it was just what I was expecting! Foods were so delicious and the staffs were super friendly!!! Definitely will go back there again!

We came from out of town and omg we are soo impressed! The seafood is fresh and yummy 😋 much better than what we get back home in Montreal. This place really raised my standards. My boyfriend isn’t a fan of fish but he likes the salmon dish

Outstanding food and atmosphere. Exceptional sushi. Delightful. There are not enough adjectives to adequately describe this incredible indulgent place.

The lighting is warm, they have high ceilings and the furniture is very comfortable and classy. The waitress was very friendly and made me feel welcome. I ordered the spicy buddha bowl, and had the choice of white rice or sushi (vinegar) rice. The flavors clashed, it was an unusual mixture. I couldn't finish it. They have many other choices for food, which look amazing (they have really nice menus with pictures of the food, very colorful.). Come here if you like to eat specialty fish.

This place is super cute and cozy but looks like it could be bumping on a busy night. Good music. Good atmosphere. Food presentation is great! The beef tartare was delicious, as was bbq eel, the fried shrimp was nice and meaty, I was a bit let down with the skewers which weren’t nicely charred (also wasn’t feeling the chicken meatball— not my thing I guess) and I didn’t really like the little fried fish with the mayo (fish was a bit bitter and mayo sauce was underwhelming) I will definitely come again and try their other tasty looking dishes though!

Really enjoyed our dinner. Friendly staff, lots of food choices on the menu, spicy Buddha amazing. Good flavors and sauces. Raining so would probably see more customers. Combo of booth seating and tables and bar.

Went here on Christmas Eve and was not disappointed. The sushi was amazing. Fresh, well made, and absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was simply wonderful. You could dress casual, semi-formal, for even straight formal and wouldn't feel out of place. Definitely will be returning.

Very beautiful decor and ambiance at the restaurant and very friendly service. Presentation of the food was also very nice. Overall the food was good but there could be been some improvements.....ponzu sauce on beef tatake needed more flavour, and grilled mackeral was a little over done. Taco Wasabe could use less Wasabe and red onions as it overpowered the octopus. Must try the buttered squid. Enjoy!

High-quality food! A lovely place for dinner. The place has a nice and cozy traditional atmosphere. I had the pokebowl and it was amazing! There's only one option for dessert but it's a great one; a perfectly balanced cheesecake! The staff is also very friendly and made good recommendations.

We chose this restaurant in part because of its proximity to the Public Gardens and its lunch-time hours. We had buttered octopus, baby squid and edamame. I found the squid tough, but my partner was happy with it. Nice service.

Delicious, reasonably priced and the waiter was super friendly and helpful with suggestions. Can't wait to make another trip to NS someday will be going here again.
