Many German cities were destroyed during WWII, Hamburg being one of them. Historical buildings are almost nonexistent, only replicas. Many of such buildings have a preserved historical look, but not the feel, sadly. Hamburg Art Gallery consists of 3 buildings and is considered to be among the largest art museums in Germany. The main building dates back to 1869, but it's hard to say what actually survived the devastating WWII. Today the museum looks shiny and modern. Attached to the main building is a domed annex and there is a separate building of Contemporary Art Gallery just opposite the main entrance. All three are interconnected with an underground corridor. The collection is big and includes art from Old masters, 19th century art, modern art and contemporary art. Easy to navigate, lots of space, plenty of information, audio guides, maps, etc. Facilities include a nice art cafe/restaurant The Cube. The museum shop is rather small. Tickets office is cash only, so if you want to pay with a card, buy the ticket online, which is not the ideal user experience as you need to fill in too many fields with unnecessary information before you get through. You need to leave all the bags in the locker room, where you will also need 1Eur or 2Eur coins to use it.

A large gallery which you could spend many hours in if you want to see the permanent collection and all the special exhibitions - the entrance price covers all this. It is a good place to see 19th Century German Romanticists, notably Caspar David Friedrich, about whom a special exhibition is coming up soon. Some of the early modernist rooms were under renovation. There is a pleasant and airy café within the museum. Note that all bags must be left in a locker, including any jackets that are not being worn. The €1 coin is returned when you vacate the locker.

The museum and the exhibits are good. There are some interesting pieces, but also some … unconventional ones. Some of them are definitely not for everyone, but that is art. I do think the ticket price is a bit too high hence the 4 stars.

I finally have made it to Hamburg's first address, when it comes to art of various centuries and art genres. Over more than 200 years, the Hanseatic people have built up a considerable collection - containing some masterpieces of paintings and remarkable objets d'art. For me, the facade of the old part, designed in the Italian Renaissance style, was also impressive. From October 2023 to February next year you can visit a special exhibition on reliefs, called "HERAUSRAGEND!" (In English: "Prominent!") where interesting objects of different museums are highlighted. Normal fare 16 Euro, but only 8 Euro if you decide to visit in the afternoon.

One of the best art museums where i have been to so far. Good guided and organized. Friendly staff. Beutiful paintings and sculptures. You should visit here.

Impressive, but really rude staff kicking people out 15 mins before closing time. There was also quite a lot of renovation ongoing, so could not see all exhibition rooms and art pieces.

This museum has it all: modern art, sculptures, old paintings, contemporary art. It’s nice for young and old. The price is also good, however the signage could be a bit better. We got lost in this big museum.

Cool space and great collections. You'd need more than 3 hours to take a full and detail tour of both buildings. Totally recommend if you want to spend a day soaking up art in silence.

MAGNIFICENT collection spread over a gorgeous gallery. The entrance hall is truly breathtaking- a masterpiece in its self. A varied collection and great to see the German masters with such prominence in this gallery. Definitely worth a look

In the context of the top galleries in Europe why isn’t the Hamburger Kunsthalle more prominent. It’s a fantastic collection and the periods and themes expertly curated.

  • 1/5 Yuu 2 months ago on Google • 53 reviews New
Over crowded and underventilated. They set a time where you book your ticket for entrance but since there is no time limit to how long people can stay, it means nothing when it comes to controlling the crowd. My main complaint is the museum organising a group guided tour. On a very serious note, guided tours should only be on weekdays. Why would a group of pensioners need to have the guided tour on a Sunday? The multiple guided tours blocked our views on many famous paintings.

A great collection of art. You can see the historical evolution of the paintings. It’s definitely a must-see place in Hamburg. It can take at least 2 hours, so plan accordingly.

It is a one day visit, depending on the exhibits that are present ant the time. It is very beautiful and expressive and it also has something for everyone. I highly recommend checking it out.

Great art museum to walk and learn about European art, mainly Northern. If you love Expressionism there is a nice selection of pieces of art. Dont miss one of the most interesting pictures by Caspar F. D.

Great place to go when nothing planned and you still need to stay near the train station(free lockers/washroom). Highly recommended for art lovers. Great collection of arts from different periods and movements. The audio tour on the app was very detailed and wonderful to help plan the route. Although I'll say the entire art hall is very big and there could have been clearer signs/maps to direction. It was quite confusing at some point.

Splendid. Amazing experience. Was really moved. A day isn't enough to marvel all these wonderful masterpieces!! The drawings are magnificent and the feeling you got is really a museum. There's a selection of art types they're offering and I find these worthy of visit. 10/10 will go there again because I haven't had enough!

Fantastic collection of European paintings and sculptures. When we visited the famous Caspar David Friedrich painting was not there, but there were so many other beauties... Could have been there 4-5 hours to see it all. It's nice that the old and new buildings are connected with an underground tunnel. The café in the old building was good but not extraordinary. There are boxes to leave bigger items, but you need a coin to use them (either €1 or 2).

Very noce ! I was surprised to see one of Kandinsky's paintings here. There is a free opening event on the first Thursday of every month. It was also a good event to stop by after work because it was extended until 9 o'clock

A museum with a lot to offer, I just wish there was more guidance on the best way to navigate it, as I became rather frustrated with the layout, and a very mediocre black & white map I was given (after asking) seemed very inadequate for such a famously large exhibition space as the Kunsthalle. Also was there really only the toilets in the basement? What a trek to make, mid way through the hoards of beautiful works on offer, to have to stomp back downstairs. Please also can the cafe improve in its offerings for someone who didn’t want to do the restaurant, but also wanted more than just a slab of cake.

I love the selection of paintings and the way the gallery is organized. The contemporary art section was particularly impressive while I find that it has more of a message. I have taken some pictures but I feel that posting them here would rob people of experiencing it first hand.

It’s that type of the museum where you can easily spend a day without noticing. It has everything from classic masters to contemporary art. It has the art that makes you learn history and the art that makes you question reality.

We visited the CASPAR DAVID FRIEDRICH Exhibition which consists of three parts; the first floor is where they exhibit sketches and the paintings of Caspar Friedrich, on the second floor you will find the modern and postmodern art installations inspired by Caspar's style together with a little place where one can experience the nature by feeling, drawing, and smelling. There's also another small part of the exhibit in the neighboring building. You can reach the other building by passing through an underground passage. It took us about 2.5 hours to complete the tour and it was a great experience. Strongly recommended.

Excellent Caspar David Friedrich exhibit with an astounding number of works from all sorts of places, thoughtfully grouped. Part 2 with contemporary works exploring CDF’s themes offers some wonderful surprises. Part 3 consists of two Kehinde Wiley pieces and is located quite far away in the old building. However, they are installed adjacent to a gigantic Makart painting, and Wiley’s sense of scale seems a bit diminished by it. Worth seeing if you haven’t seen Wiley’s work before, but I would save that trip and spend more time with part 1 instead. Spent 3.5 hours, very few places to sit—only in part 2. Extremely crowded.

I really enjoyed the main exhibition of Hamburger Kunsthalle. Dear fellow tourists, please make sure you have at least 3 to 4 hours planned for the visit, the gallery is HUGE. I originally wanted to see the contemporary art, however, the main exhibition is something that does actually impress.

If you are planning to go, expect to spend there approximately 2 to 3 hours. The place is huge and there is a decent collection of artworks. There are paintings for Monet, picasso and Munch. I advice you to take the audio guide tour to know the stories and enjoy the artwork

Hamburger Kunsthalle was a great experience. Normally in a museum you can sometimes get bored due to number of all the art pieces but here every famous art piece has an explaination and it makes you understands all the hidden things that the artist used. I really liked the museum and we spent three and a half hours there but i didn’t even realize. Thanks for all the workers and curators in the museum.

I believe when you visit Hamburg, you should also visit this mesuem. Located near Hamburg Hauptbahnhof its very easily to reach from where ever your Hotel or Airbnb is located. The is build built in the 19 century, and has still the same style of that time. Making some rooms look like time stood still. There different kinds of exhibitions within the meusem. From contemporary art too old art. With paintings from famous painters like Edvard Munch too one of the mostl know painting of Napoleon Bonaparte. I would recommend going here on time when its not so full, so I believe during the week.

It is a wonderful place to visit and see. Information is given next to each picture on the paintings or the statues found. I think people who love history and art should definitely stop by. A valuable and carefully organized museum. Here are Caspar David Friedrich's painting “The Wanderer in a Sea of Fog” (1817) and much more, including Cezanne, Manet, Monet, Picasso, just to name a few. Have a good half day. It was nice, but all the old pictures were a bit too much. It takes a long time to watch them all and is a bit boring for my taste. I would like more modern art. However, the very large painting in the first room was very impressive!

Glad I was able to visit this museum during my short visit to Hamburg, I enjoyed it a lot. Stayed almost up to 3 hours but even longer would be better if you’re not in a rush. I was lucky to visit this “Femme Fatale” exhibition during my visit, in addition to old collections. Price is expensive a bit, 16 euros for one person. Did not get one of those audio guides, instead downloaded the app but was not able to use it since the internet did not work inside so well, I was not able to download the contents so couldn’t use it unfortunately. Overall, a must-see in Hamburg!

I spend some hours there and it is worth it. The exhibition of the paintings follows a chronological order. I was amazed with some paintings from the romanticism and 19th century realism. Unfortunately the Wanderer above the sea and fog was on a tour. They also have a contemporary art exhibition

Excellent Hamburg art museum/gallery. The museum consists of three connected buildings, dating from 1869 (main building), 1921 (Kuppelsaal) and 1997 (Galerie der Gegenwart). It is located in the area between the main station and the two Alster lakes. We visited primarily to see the exhibition entitled Double Vision consisting of work by Gerhard Richter and Vija Celmins. It was excellent. But the museum houses a permanent collection that covers seven centuries of European art, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Its focus is on North German painting of the 14th century, paintings by Dutch, Flemish and Italian artists of the 16th and 17th centuries, French and German drawings and paintings of the 19th century, and international modern and contemporary art.

The museum has a lot to offer, this is more than one can take in within a single visit. Especially since the exhibition expands from before Renaissance all the way to the 20th century (19th, but then also there’s a nice section devoted to Contemporary art). My favorite part was Expressionism and around. Edvard Munch’s Madonna, among others.

Old paintings are limited. Such a big iconic architectural place housing only limited number of public galleries. May not hold much for a non modern art connoisseur or amateur. Good thing you can enter the main hall any number of times from within the complex between two buildings interconnected from the cellar.
