In the website it was stated that it’s a room and not dormitory. I was fine with staying in a dormitory type room but they made me stay in a room full of guys. I didn’t feel safe since I am a solo traveller and the only girl in that room. I went back to the front desk to ask them if I could be in an all girl dormitory and explained why. They did not transfer me. They room has a disgusting smell and the charging port attached on the beds were not working. The room wasn’t clean at all. The wash rooms were disgusting as well. I hope the management sees the need for improvement. Also, please fix your website to avoid the situation that I have gone through. I did not sleep the whole night there and I had to rebook to a different hotel because I can’t stay the night any longer. I waited for the morning in the lobby since they didn’t switch up my room to an all female one.

We had clean room, no extra cost for linen. However, there were glass shards inside our linen but we managed the situation with the reception but we had to clean the room of the glass ourselves. The guest kitchen was bad and we didn't want to use it. However the stay was okay and not at all as bad as some reviews. More blugs for phone charging is needed. The location was okay, not noisy, felt safe and easy access to train station.

Great for budget travels and large groups who don't mind sharing the bedroom, hotel bathrooms ans hotel kitchen The lobby/lounge is a very lovely place to hang out If you get a private double room you get two single beds and private bathroom WHAT I LIKED Our double room was clean as well as tge bathroom. Extra full cleaning must be booked the day before (can be done online) but it's free Heating is good Bathroom has soap and shower gel One medium towel per person + floor towel Hairdryer is good WHAT SHOULD BE DONE BETTER I understand mattresses aren't cheap but damn those were borderline painful to sleep on To sprinkle some irony, the pillows were almost nonexistent One more towel per person would be ideal

The rooms are really small but super clean, there is no mini fridge or closet in the room. the biggest problem is that not only there is no air conditioner in summer time, but also the windows do not have fly screen, so basically u have to decide if u want to struggle with all the mosquitos or id u prefer to die from heat :)))

    1) This hostel did not offer walking tour that to me are fundamental 2) USB ports located at the bed side was not working, The little light located at the bedside was not working 3) Breakfast was expensive ( about 11 euro) 4) Not a hostel vibe atmosphere 5) personnel super friendly and no cost luggage storage. 6) no mosquitoes screening at the windows 7) no A/c 8) kitchen very basic and environment super small

They charge for random non-pre announced stuff, like tourism fee to put a feet on hamburg. USB inputs are broken in every Room/Bed and the place looks scary ( like ex- mental treatment facility) the staff is nice tho. They don't have not even ventilation inside the rooms so you have to inhale extrangers condensed sweat meanwhile sleeping ;) Don't come here.

Absolutely awful! At least that was my experience. Never come here for New Year. I don't know if three quarters of the staff called in sick or what, but they had three reception staff attending to a fully-booked seven story building on new years eve (many of the guests of whom only just arrived that day and had to be checked in). The poor staff also had to serve drinks at the bar at the same time (owners, please note: you lost sooo many drinks sales, because after waiting at the unattended bar for over 10-15 minutes to be served, many guests gave up. By hiring one extra person to tend the bar you could have made at least 50 times their hourly rate of pay. Coffee, cold drinks and snacks machines were also all out of order). At first I felt sorry for the staff, but not for long. They were super rude, even when you were extra friendly, nice and understanding towards them (I spoke very politely, only asked for something if I absolutely needed it, and tried to save them time however I could). One of the three staff would always be hiding away out in the back room at any given time. I saw them scrolling through fast food pics on the computer screen, so I'm assuming they were taking their breaks (which, of course, they are entitled -- and deserve -- to do. But why say 'just wait a minute and I'll come back to you' and then walk off to take your break if you have no intention of coming back?). So there were really only ever two people on duty. I had to wait over an hour to check in and then stand in the same queue for yet another half hour because my key card wouldn't work. Nearly everyone else in my dorm had the same problem. I was never able to resolve the situation because after half an hour of waiting I gave up. I was barely any closer to the start of the queue. I came back an hour later and the queue was just as long. Even to ask for the key to the guest toilet while waiting hours for access to my room was impossible. I had to buy something at a nearby cafe instead in order to use the loo. (btw, the hostel has one toilet for all the waiting un-checked in guests to use, many who had also been waiting for hours). Even the next night when things were a bit quieter, the staff on duty were slow, unhelpful, disinterested and surly. Only the night/morning staff at 06:50 am the next day were pleasant and attentive. All in all, I spent over 3 hours waiting for help from the staff, was very late to my new year's eve event as a result (couldn't check in until 5pm, as hundreds of people were waiting at 3pm, the official check-in time, came back at 4pm but still had to wait an hour, and then wasn't able to briefly shower and change until after 7pm due the room access issue) and couldn't get into my room during the rest of the evening if no one was there (thank God someone was in bed one of the times, but he wasn't impressed). The following day I was able to get my key card revalidated, but it would only ever work the first time. Very annoying. Regarding the rooms, they were small but ok. Fine for the price if you are staying there outside of holiday/peak times. Definitely not worth €30-50 for a bed in a 6 bed dorm though. There is no privacy when using the attached bathroom at all. The dorms are mixed and there are no other toilets you can use except for the guest toilet, which is also mixed and always seems to have a queue. The walls are paper thin and you can hear everything people are doing in there) and were too cramped to walk in even though most people had brought a minimum of stuff. I payed over €60 for two nights to stay in what felt like a cattle yard, where they are trying to cram in as many animals as possible. Thank God there wasn't an emergency requiring immediate evacuation. With two tiny old-style elevators that fit a maximum of 3 people each, and a very narrow staircase, I'm surprised it meets Germany's strict building standards. Oh, and make sure you give yourself plenty of time to check out!!!

The hostel overall was okay. There is not really a kitchen available, it is just a shared fridge and a stove, but no plates, pans etc. The rooms are good, but the sheets and pillows have dirty stains. For the lockers in the rooms you have to bring your own lock.

This hostel is poorly managed and with little effort it could be so better. The common areas are nice and you have a good breakfast, common kitchen and a small bar for drinks and pool. However, the rooms are not the most comfortable, the aisles and corridors are not clean and the rooms are overpriced and don't even include sheets and towels, that you pay on top. To consider this hostel a good deal, they should either improve the equipment or lower the price.

Do not expect to receive any replies for any queries. Neither before or after the stay. Before the stay we asked by email if breakfast included anything gluten free but never received a reply. On the day of departure we forgot a bag of clothes on the bed and called the hotel 2 hours later to ask if it could be put aside for later pick up. We were told to contact them again later. We contacted the hotel via email/customer service but never received a reply to the question. We went to the hotel again to ask in the reception if anything had been put aside as forgotten items but they knew nothing about the forgotten items. Our mistake to forget the clothes but really poor to non existing customer service in this regard.

Sunday breakfast was a disaster. At half past seven there were no rolls and the eggs were uncooked at the buffet. When we came back around 10 o'clock there were rolls and the eggs were cooked. But 90% of the eggs were broken. Not burst but as if they had all fallen down. Also, there were some weird brown spots on the eggs like they rolled through some dirt after cooking. Very gross. The milk at the buffet was not chilled.

Price matches quality. Cheap. Be aware of some employees at the reception! Although some are very nice, some try to trick you into paying money for stuff that are included in the booking, such as bed sheets, towels and storage room access. Location is great!

I liked the hostel, it's close to the Hauptbahnhof of Hamburg. But there are few things that could be improved, like have more then 1 person for the check-in, it takes a little bit too long now. Also the snacks machine is not working to get something at night. + A smile would be nice from staff members.

They charge you for everything even the bed linen 3,5.... The staff at the reception was rude and just didn't care at all. I needed to get some urgent work done and the WiFi wasn't working at all. Yes it is cheap and a budget hostel but it's definitely not worth the money and given all the extra charges you ought as well sleep at a better place like the generator or another hostel there are many good ones in Hamburg where you even get free bed linen and towels.... I would not recommend staying here at all!

Nice or OK are great ways to describe this hotel. It is an affordable weekend getaway and in a good location. The single room is tiny but does have everything you need. The cleaner just entered the room even after I said I was not ready... which was awkward. The Bar red wine was OK but they had run out of prosecco. There is a night security team and when I was there the police were called.

Place is really close to central station and many sightseeing locations. The room and bathroom were clean. Showers get nice and hot and soap+towels are included. Location is near a highway and lots of construction. Room was stuffy and not well ventilated unless we opened the window. Beds are very loud when anyone moves it creaks and shakes the room. My bed was missing a comforter blanket and my friend's bed was missing a pillow. Laundry machines were broken. USB ports in bed were broken Decent value.

One of the receptionists made a mistake with my booking and behaved absolutely unprofessional on top of that. Unacceptable behaviour for a front desk employee. Started making "Blabla"- noises. Only thing that was missing was her putting her fingers in her ears. Ridiculous. Value for money still without concurrence regarding the location. Rooms are okay 👍 Edit.: In addition to the front desk employee making a mistake and behaving like a pre-pubescent kid, they denied my check-in for my extended booking and banned me from the hostel without giving me a reason ( because of data protection ?). Do yourself a favour and check in to one of the other hostels in the area, they are not only better but also have polite, professional employees. For now I didn't get any money back even though the check-in was denied. I might change the rating depending on how the management reacts to this incident. First time in 10 years of travelling the world that I had such a disappointing, kafkaesque encounter. Absolutely underwhelming!

The staff are lovely, however the rooms are not. The rooms were not clean, there was rubbish left on my beds shelf, a dirty plate and an empty beer bottle next to the windows. The room smelt like cigarette smoke, and on my last night, someone smoked in the bathroom, which created a horrible smell in the room. It's not worth the €100, I wouldn't recommend here.

Very good for a cheap staying in Hamburg. The rooms are not the cheapest in town but the shared beds are really economic, if you don't Want to pay extra for the bedsheets bring your owns. It's near to the central station and 2 stops from the jungfernsteig ( mall and most of the big franchises stores).

everything should be better. the receptionist gave me a wrong bed and i had to had an unnecessary beef. the pillow were non-existent, it was uncomfortable. the hall were dim, also made me uncomfortable. sometimes it smelled bad, like a cigarette mixed with body odor. walking to the hostel were a bad experience, i didn’t feel safe. what’s good about this place is the heater work well. the lobby were bright and it open 24 hours. they gave soap in the bathroom. the place were pretty spacious.

We booked private room for 4. Nothing really to complain except one time the vending machine was not working when we needed it the most.

The staff is easily overstaffed and my room was not cleaned at all when I arrived. Maybe this were the people before me, can't really say, overall an OK

Everything was nice, hostel is very big and has a nice sitting area, bar and good breakfast. The front desk staff are helpful and polite. The only problem was that the rooms were very hot at night. But it was good for the price.

Just terrible in general, I would rather be in a box on the highway going over the speed limit about to crash than stay here again. The shower was horrible if you turned it too far right it was like acid on your skin if you moved it 1 nanometre to the left it would turn to ice particles and freeze you in place, i came on holiday to relax and this has just made it worse and if that isn’t enough my pillow had poo stains. There is not words to describe how terrible the food is

Arrogant and amateur personnel. No sense of customer satisfaction whatsoever. Long check-in lines. Your room will be ready two hours after you check-in... You are lucky if you can find a place to sit during that time. Never gonna stay with A & O again. Simply awful.

Nice hostel. And reception so nice, helpful and friendly. Everything is good. Near train station and bus station. Have to pay city tax(but it didn't show on booking website)

stayed 2 nights. You get what you pay for. Booked a single-bedroom, got a twin bedroom, so lucky me! One thing that kind of annoyed me: my room/window was right next to the street. Even late at night after 10pm, the streets were full of cars. Hard to fall asleep with window open (in summer).

On the online booking we choose the 6 beds room but in the hotel we instead got 8 beds room. It's not that bad until the last person come in and make the room rather suffocating. The room has that humid smells and the receptionist is handling too much work that it's hard to ask for something. But overall it's a very great experience to stay in this hostel.

Located 10 Mins walk to/from main station, friendly staff, the price is very affordable 👍👍. Room where i stayed was not so clean (compared to A&O Hostel in other cities, where i was staying) but still okay and i could still had a good sleep.

  • 2/5 Luara L. 1 year ago on Google
I love the fact they had many vending machines in this hostel, but I went in a summer week full of students they were extremely loud until 3 am in the morning in the hall apparently there is no strict rules for silence there! I gave 2 stars because I had a bad night in this place and a good night of sleep for me in precious!!!

Room was clean mostly the bathroom. Service was good especially the Indonesian manager who assisted us to have some pack lunch and get our room ready as we came from a long flight. Kudos to him.

This place could be much better with some adjustments, because the building has a ok structure and location. I stayed in many many hostels and this may have been the worst. Dirty, very poorly trained receptionists, charge for the use of the sheet… Idk.. I thought all the time “this place doesn’t make sense’

  • 1/5 Simon S. 2 years ago on Google
Unfriendly staff. Room and tables at the dining room are dirty. After telling the staff that there’s only dirty tables, I only got a dirty and old rag. Terrible. Everything very old. Would not recommend.

We booked a family room for 3. Sheets included, no breakfast. We enjoyed our stay and were suprised after reading the reviews how nice it actually was. The room, which included bathrooms with a shower and a toilet was all clean. 10 min walk from the central station so nothing to complain about.

+ Nice place to stay & price is also desirable. - Only thing I did not like is they give bedsheets for extra 3€. It would be great if they include bedsheets & towels to total price. In many hostels towels & bedsheets are free & provided by hostel.

I don't understand why negative reviews here because a&o is the best hostel ever in Europe (I went this same branding in Vienna, Dresden and Budapest). It's a good hostel and cheaper. Easy to book and check-in. Friendly staff. They have bed sheets, towels, shampoo etc. for free. Cleaners come everyday for a room. Very organized and too clean. My friend and I stayed over 4 nights, and she was so shocked how good they are. She said she went many hostels but not this one. She said she would definitely visit a&o again in any cities.

Needs a good renovation and cleaning the carpets. Lots of teenagers making noise all the time at the corridors. Be careful with your stuff because there's no lockers inside the single rooms.

My girlfriend and I settled in a room for 6 women, there was no one else in the room, the next day a man was accommodated, we were given another room at the reception, did not want to overpower 1 man who just settled in our room, and gave us at least in us heavy suitcases and unfolded things, we got to another room, continued for 1 night in addition online, at the reception a boisterous employee said we can not stay there, we need to pick up our things, leave in the locker, and wait for check-in after 14:00, on request to stay in the room or stay in another room was refused! stayed in the network of these hostels more than once !!! after such a weekend there is no desire to stay !!!

Actually not so Bad as other reviews indicate. The rooms are clean and clear. The breakfast is actually very convenient and price worthy!

The rooms are basic, but good. The staff are wonderful. Special mention to the waitress in the breakfast restaurant for making my son a very happy boy by getting him some pancakes.

  • 3/5 Prateek Z. 1 year ago on Google
Okay for the price!! Pros: 1. The rooms and common areas were clean and organized. 2. There was always someone at the reception to answer any queries 3. Easy check-in & check-out 4. Cheap stays available at very short notice. 5. Good location. 6. Diversity. You can meet all kinds of people across all the ages. Cons: 1. No proper managements of the beds or anything nobody knows which bed you are supposed to occupy and that also creates issues with cleaning staff. 2. No locker facility. Have to bring your lock for the storage facility. 3. Kitchen is very basic. hardly have any cutlery. 4. No food was available on any day during breakfast. didn't get a chance for other meals. There are not many options available nearby as well. 5. Rooms are pretty small.

Close to the main station but right in between a main road and train tracks. Uncomfortable beds (dorm) in which you can't even sit without hitting your head on the top bunk. 2 elevators but one marked out of service already and the other one doesn't work either. The laundry at the hostel costs twice as much than if you went to a landromat. Fine for one night but I wouldn't recommend more.

  • 2/5 Rene F. 1 year ago on Google
Don’t stay over 1 night. This place charges for bed sheets and duvets, which you have to install yourself. I watched housekeeping and they don’t clean the blankets or pillows, so you really do need those sheets. It’s in a neighbourhood that I felt unsafe walking through late at night as a solo female. I’ve travelled solo A LOT. I couldn’t go party because I was wary of the walk home and Ubers were €25 back during pride weekend. The breakfast was lame as hell for €8.50. Each bunk has two charges. Me and a girl tried each charger in the 6 dorm room and only 2/12 worked. There isn’t a social aspect. They may have sold drinks near the lobby but it wasn’t a bar atmosphere. AND it’s still kinda far from the train station. Down a big hill you’ll inevitably have to go up again.
