Short version They should change their name to “Sphincter Döner”. I’m writing this review from my toilet. Long version Don’t go here on a hot summer day before closing time. For all their rules, Germany doesn’t seem to be very strict about enforcing food safety in its restaurants. At a Döner joint such as this one, you will often see chopped vegetables in large heaps which cannot be cooled effectively. Today, the chopped tomatoes at Sphinx looked like they had been sitting in the heat most of the day. This place has no AC. It’s hot in there! The front door is propped open. The refrigeration can’t keep up. And yet, against my better judgement, I accepted those tomatoes with my Kebap. They tasted… wrong. Foul. Exactly what one would expect under the circumstances. So I just picked the tomatoes out and ate the meat. But it was already too late. I ate enough of the foul things that on my way home I could feel sharp pains in my stomach. And now I’m spending the rest of my evening on the toilet. I might go here on another day when it’s not too warm. But, to be honest, if they don’t understand basic principles of food safety — or they don’t care — should I ever go back? 2 stars while I ponder that question. In any case, I’ve learned my lesson: listening to my gut can save my gut.

This place does stand out from all those kebab-next-door places. Guys working there are doing a great job, always fast and polite. Can't judge about kebab, but my falafel plate is always outstanding - fresh and deliscious.

Hands down the best döner and kebab i have had in Europe ever. The ingredients are fresh and high quality. If you don’t want to be disappointed, then Sphinx Döner is where you should go. The staff are extremely friendly and service minded. We were in town for holidays, and didn’t know they will only take cash. When the food got ready and we had to pay, they didn’t let us to get cash first. They basically demanded us to eat first, since the food will be cold and trusted us to go get cash after we ate. Went there for lunch everyday during our stay in Hamburg. will definitely go again

The kebabs are soft and juicy and there so many nice fresh salad within the döner. I removed one star for not having enough and tasty sauces and also because they only accept cash!

Highly recommend this place. Definitely one of the best kebabs I've tried in Hamburg. Ingredients are fresh. Meat and sauces are delicious. Portions are generous and staff is efficient and friendly. Prices are reasonable. Seating inside and outside. Beware that due to popularity sometimes there is a line.

Ate the spicy traditional döner and it was really good! Its a small place but there are a few tables inside. Staff was friendly and realy quick in their service.

I never saw a döner this big in my life before! I was really hungry and I thought I could finish a jumbo döner. I was totally wrong. I would like to meet a person who can finish that thing. Döner itself was great, sauces were on point and the staff were really helpful. Will definetly go there again.

This could be the best Durüm Döner in Hamburg. Juicy & a lot of salad & dips. The staff is also friendly as hell ❤️

I grew up in hamburg as a child before returning back to the UK. My older brothers stayed in HH. Döner is the thing I miss the most, even over my family haha. Sphinx Dõner is hands down the bestnone over ever had. I had one last night and I'll be back at least 2 more times before I depart again. Truly nevt level deliciousness and great service. The best in the city!
