The old centre of Hida town is an underrated and less popular attraction than many similar places in this region, and hence seems less visited than other heritage sites. There are relatively few tourist shops, restaurants or commercial operations along the old streets, which are tranquil (when we visited on a May afternoon), attractive, and beautifully maintained. There is a lot of history here and without the hustle and bustle of mass-market tourists it is much easier to appreciate. Small canals line the residential streets, and temples and shrines, sake distillers, candle-makers, warehouses and museums are scattered here and there to add to the ambience. If you are driving, there is free parking opposite the Hidashi Bunkakoryu Center just north of the train tracks, and the station is also just a short walk from Shirakabe Dozogai Street if you come by train (15 minutes from Takayama I believe). I enjoyed wandering this district more than the old Takayama town centre just because of the peace and quiet and lack of commercial development. Highly recommended.

Walked there in late evening. Even in evenings the vibe was nice. Nice old town feeling. The old street in Takayama is pretty commercialised. It felt much better in this street and in the nearby areas.

Beautiful street in a beautiful town, short train ride from Takayama if you are not staying in HidaFurukawa. Do note that the carps in canals will NOT be seen during winter months as the locals use canal water for melting snow during winter. Which we found out the hard way but it is still very nice to stroll.

Hida Furukawa is a very quiet town with not many tourists each day but it is charming especially this the streets, the water channel has very clear and there are many koi fish in it. It's another city that I fell in love with.

A quiet town that didn't attract much tourist attention as compared to Takayama however it definitely worth a visit especially if one would like to experience the traditional feeling of Japan. It is easily access via train and relatively small and very clean, exploring on foot is recommended. Spare few hours to explore the charming parts of the town.

Nothing much happening here. We visited on a Sunday and the street was so quiet. Not sure if it's because it's winter and there are no tourists now. But most of the shops were closed. I read a review that said this street is better than the one at Takayama. It's definitely not better! You can skip this place.

A traditional Japanese street which is 5 minute walk from train station. It is like quieter version of Takayama known by much less tourists. The Hida’s traditional buildings such as wine shops are standing here, forming a beautiful scenery. Architectural details such as cloud carvings on the white walls and lattice bay windows can be seen everywhere on the street, making the nostalgic atmosphere full of charm. On the other hand, you can see about 1,000 colorful carps swimming through the Seto River along the street. The town used to be polluted by factory wastewater in the era of industrial progress. Seto River had turned into a stinky ditch blocked by sediment. Fortunately, the local residents started to think about importance of environmental protection. They decided to clean the river and refused any local factory. Their efforts made the town becoming a beautiful town with colorful carps swimming in front of houses.

Really peaceful, definitely recommend spending some time here. Fish food for 100 yen is available at regular intervals along the canal.

Nice little town with historical buildings. Less tourists than in Takayama which is nice. There are several sake breweries, a craft museum and many other things to see

Nothing beats being there and seeing it. Had a relaxing and enjoyable day exploring Hide Furukawa old town. We had lunch there and the misses picked up some of her shopping too.

Was there on 27 Nov 2023. Disappointed that the Fishes were moved to Masushima castle ruins for winter. They will only be back in spring. Those who plan to go i hope this helps avoiding a trip there.
