天文元年1532年弘信上人が、堀越城外の萩野の地に開基したことが始まりとされています。2代藩主津軽信枚(のぶひら)公が、高岡の新城(現在の弘前城)を慶長14年1609年に築城しました。築城後の慶長16年1611年に最勝院を萩野から田町(熊野奥照神社の近く)に移転させました。その時に津軽藩の祈願所になります。寛永3年1629年に津軽真言五山の一つに数えられるようになりました。明治3年1870年の神仏分離令により、銅屋町の大圓寺の現在地に移転しました。つまり、五重塔や本堂などのほとんどの伽藍堂宇は、旧大圓寺のものを引き継いだものです。今も行われている例大祭を「ダエジ(大圓寺)の宵宮」と呼んでいるのは、その名残りです。現在の護摩堂に安置されている本尊牛頭天王像は、大圓寺の本尊でした。旧暦6月13日が牛頭天王の縁日です。大圓寺は、大鰐の高伯寺と合併しました。廃仏毀釈で廃寺となった旧百澤寺(現在の岩木山神社)の金剛力士像が、ここの仁王門に移されています。文殊菩薩は、卯年生まれ一代様として学業に御利益があると信じられています。
