Went there 10 am Monday. Had stuffed cabbage and potatoe cakes, broccoli salad, angel fluff eggs and pickle and 2 sliced rye bread 19$ oh and a black cherry soda. The egg and bread made sandwich later that day. It was excellent as always. Wholesome food for the soul.

AMAZING! You do not want to miss this place. Oldest running kosher-style deli still owned and operated by the original family (started in 1905) and almost everything has stayed the same for decades. If you want to go back in time, visit Shapiro's in Indy, just check out the pictures of the "cafeteria". As an important data point, I grew up in New Jersey eating at delis like this this was so incredibly nostalgic I was just smiling the whole time I was there and did not want to leave. I had so much fun from the moment I walked into Shapiro's. You come upon the bakery first and the smells were amazing. Fresh baked rugelach, challah, the best rye bread I have ever head as the crust was crunchy, black & whites and I might say the best Chocolate Chip Cookie I have had in awhile. I had a pastrami sandwich on rye with a Dr. Browns Cream Soda and was in heaven. Of course it was HUGE and I could not eat it all but it made an amazing breakfast chopped up and pan seared with an egg the following morning for breakfast - Total YUM! It is amazing how they have been able to hold onto this incredible history. Notice the Pie Cases - wowee if you love pies and so hard to choose. Picked up a pound of corned beef and half a loaf of rye to bring back to St. Louis with me thank goodness I had a cooler. My only wish was that I had purchased more baked goods. I cannot wait to go back.

Shapiro's is one of those places you splurge on for lunch when in town. They are certainly on the expensive side ($19 for a sandwich and no sides). However, that sandwich is amazing! I love the corned beef/pastrami combo Reuben. The meat is cut fresh and it's a huge sandwich. Mac and cheese is great. Their desserts are excellent. I got the carrot/cheese cake combo. Delicious. Love this place and wish I was back in town to get some more.

We were staying across the street and saw this place a block away. This place had plenty of dishes and choices. You could get a full hot meal with 2 sides or a great sandwich including Rare Roast Beef, GREAT Pastrami on Rye or other selections like Corned Beef. We opted for a Rare Roast Beef Sandwich and Pastrami with Swiss on Rye. My wife really enjoys Rare Roast Beef and this place did not disappoint. It has been awhile since I have had a Pastrami Sandwich and the Pastrami was really tasty and very tender. The rye bread blended well and was not overpowering at all. Definitely recommend these 2 sandwiches. I also tried the Coleslaw (very well made) along with their potato salad. The potato salad was more mustard based vs mayonnaise but was well made and had a good consistency and taste This place is not cheap but like they say “you get what you pay for” and we enjoyed our meal here for sure. If you want a good meal then stop by and visit Shapiro’s Delicatessen!

I came through this joint on my recent trip to Indy. I usually try to eat at least one place in every city I visit. Houston has a great Jewish/Eastern European food scene so I've had some awesome stuffed cabbage so naturally I got the stuffed cabbage along with a cup of beef stew and mac and cheese for my sides with complementary rye bread and a kosher spear. The restaurant has two sections; one for take out the other for dine in. The dine in side is large and spacious with cafeteria style for serving - think a la carte. The portion servings are quite large, check the pics! To the food! The stuffed cabbage was very sweet, well the sauce that was poured over it at least. Seems like it's prepared with ketchup it was that sweet. The beef and rice stuffing in the cabbage was at least yummy and pretty savory. Not my preference but it wasn't bad. I was disappointed with the beef stew as it consisted mostly of vegetables and maybe 4 pieces of beef. Might have been luck of the draw since I did go around 2pm. The mac and cheese was about the only thing that was legit: Creamy and cheesy, no crust on top so it was not oven prepared but good none the less. The rye bread was yummy and chewy (like fresh bread) and the kosher spear tasted in house prepared but also had the leached taste from the plastic buckets they're prepared in (probably).

My Grandfather is a regular at Shapiro’s, and whenever we’re in town we’ll go out for lunch here. Besides the food, which needless to say is absolutely delicious (the Reuben sandwich is one of the best I’ve had in years, although it’s quite large so be prepared to take half home. Desserts are sensational and very well portioned as well, as are their sides & soups. Can’t really go wrong with anything, honestly) the staff members are all extremely friendly and complaisant, and make a point of greeting my Grandfather and I whenever we sit down to eat. Jennifer in particular is quite convivial. Shapiro’s in general is just a really solid place to eat. If you’re visiting Indianapolis, it’s a must visit.

An iconic Indianapolis eatery. If you enjoy a classic Jewish deli, you can not go wrong with this wonderful restaurant. A wide variety of delicious options. The rye bread is extraordinary.

My wife and I were pleasantly surprised by how well the food tasted. Not one dish was less than delicious. The Reuben sandwich was piled high with thinly sliced corned beef, and sauerkraut was in between and topped with Swiss cheese and 1000 Island Dressing. A big meal, but oh so delicious from the first to last bite. My wife couldn't stop raving about her salami sandwich. The potato pancakes were perfectly fried with crispy edges, and chock full of flavor. The Cole slaw, which was thinly chopped, was so good there was no reason to add salt or pepper. The potato salad had perfectly cooked potatoes in a spicy brown mustard sauce that perfectly coated each and every potato. The Deviled Egg was the big surprise because it tasted amazing. Spicy from the brown mustard, and a hint of sweetness from the pickles. For dessert we enjoyed eating the German Chocolate cake. The cake was chocolatey, the coconut filling had the right amount of sweetness, and the chocolate frosting was divine.

Pretty much every local I've met told me to hit this shop. I took the brisket sandwich and potato salad. Not a cheap eat, but the quality was there, no doubt. Service was friendly, and very quick. Next time I'm trying the pastrami!

Four and a half stars! Wonderful place for a great sandwich! Only reason it's four and a half is it's a little on the pricey side if you're looking for a bargain. Friendly service! Cafeteria style service. An amazing pastrami on rye! 😄 Really wanted to try the Reuben but they only serve full size sandwiches 🥪.

Rueben’s are amazing! I have had the Turkey Rueben and it is moist and piled high. Sour kraut between stacks of Turkey. The matzah ball soup is moist and tasty. It’s not cheap, but it’s worth it. It is like a large cafeteria, but the large selection is hard to beat.

Very disappointing. Pastrami was grisly, chewy, and tasteless. I didn't send it back, but the lady next to me did, and got fish instead. VERY overpriced for what you get. Potato pancakes were good, German chocolate cake was just okay. Ample parking and indoor seating. Don't waste your time or money.

Yum! Cafeteria type place with delicious options! The pastrami sandwich was 1 of the best I've ever had. The Bakery, talk about AMAZING! Tou had to use a fork & knife to eat the eclair bc it was so big! I was in Indy for a week on work trip, ate here 4 of the 7 nights I was there. Wish we had 1 closer to home

Excellent Ruben! Potato salad is mustard based very good though! The potato cakes are more like a bread than potato cakes in my opinion. The place is school style line with trays to grab all you can eat! Definitely an experience and I will be back!

What a place! Authentic deli that backs it up with food that will blow your doors of. So many options to please any palate. Toughest part is narrowing you selection. Saturday lunch had a line of 65 or more out the door. It’s cafeteria style so it moves quick. Hint: look at the menu before you hit the line. Gets stressful making quick decisions with all the awesome food in front of you. If you go once, you’ll be back. Incredible!

The best deli! The roasted turkey sandwich and hot dog w/ krout is just the best! But don't forget to grab some Bagels, rye bread, cookies and a slice of cake on your way out.

My husband is obsessed with the corned beef sandwich and is never disappointed. I’ve tried various things with mixed results. The last 2 times, I had chicken salad on one visit and tuna salad on the other. Neither had enough flavor to lure me back anytime soon. I suspect if I tried one of their tempting desserts, I’d have something to rave about.

We have to stopped by this iconic Indianapolis place. It seemed to be local favorites. The place was packed, but the line moved quickly. Their food was fresh. You should look at the menu before getting in the line. There are two sections of the dine in and take out.

Absolutely fantastic place. Heavenly Matzo Ball Soup, excellent pastrami & pepper beef. Potato salad was better than my grandma ever made, and the chocolate cake was delicious. Can't wait to go back & try more goodies! Check it out!

Come hungry - food was fantastic! Staff was courteous and place was very clean. Had a very family/home vibe. We had the “Award winning Reuben” and it was great. Big enough that we were glad we split it so we could have cake! OM Goodness - save room for cake! We had the Black Forest cake and Carrot cake - both excellent and both huge! So good that we bought some treats to bring home too.

Shapiro’s never disappoints! From stacked pastrami sandwiches to delicious entrees and huge desserts, it should be on your list if you are visiting Indianapolis! We had a pastrami on rye with Boston Cream pie, and the baked chicken entrée with green beans and warm potato salad. All of it was inhaled (except the dessert- we took it to go because we were stuffed!) They have a deli and carry out as well as dine in. Don’t miss out on Shapiro’s!

Thee best deli! It is the oldest deli in the US. Everything is perfection. I got the new york style Reuben with coleslaw. The meat is fresh and tender. The next day I got the tuna, and it was perfect. The carrot cake and Boston creme pie are fresh and authentic. I had matzos soup for the first time and it was just like chicken soup with dumplings I admit it's pricey you'll spent 30 bucks for person but well worth it.

Impressive selection of cakes. I arrived before 4pm and was lucky, because the Roast Beef Manhattan was already available! I‘d recommend it to take it without the bread. They put lots of mashed potatoes on the plate, this is filling enough.

Tasty meats and friendly staff. Loved their Matzo ball and corned beef is very well made. Prices are on the higher side compared to usual Indy prices but they make it up with the quality they offer.

Really cool place. Large dining area w separate area for takeout. Gotta love the cafeteria style approach with lots of great offerings. The traditional Reuben is exceptional!

We visited for the first time in Indianapolis with a group of about twelve family members. Service was great lots to choose from. The food was good but very expensive. A friend of our family was nice enough to treat us and one other person to our meal. I was shocked the bill was almost $160 😳! A very expensive lunch. I don't like that they only put on mustard, and miracle whip is the only option. I like mayonnaise too. Additionally, you have to put on the extra condiments yourself. I felt rushed going down the line and disliked speaking into the 🎤 to order. I wanted my sandwich grilled to melt my cheese and that wasn't possible. The large sliced sweet potato I shared with somebody else was 😋 though. I had a pastrami and turkey sandwich, a cup of soup, chips, potato cake, german chocolate cake, and a soda. Hubby had the same sandwich, potato cake, potato salad, lemon cake, and soda. I am willing to try it one more time in a different location.
