Beautiful bookstore with a large selection of English books. Unfortunately there was a line, having customers wait about 30 minutes to get in and honestly I would not go again if it was busy. Many people go for some quick pictures but aside from the name value the bookstore is not particularly unique. On the other hand, if you have time to spare, you can take a book upstairs to the reading room and read in the company of high selves and loud tourists. Would recommend for the reading room and maybe a picture outside, but the prices are similar to most other bookstores and a book is a book in the end no matter where it was bought.

What a memorable experience! We had to wait in line to get in (10min) and once we got it, it was crowded. But you're dealing with a quiet, respectful, nerdy crowd so perusing was lovely. The upstairs 'reading room' was AMAZING! Photography inside is prohibited so to explain: it's an OLD BUILDING, the upstairs are hallways and rooms filled with old books. Floor to ceiling. And cool little places to sit and read. It was not crowded and people were relaxing and reading. Back downstairs, all the books are well categorized and it feels like they have a superb collection of books. Beautiful & unique covers. A great children's section. At checkout they'll stamp the inside of your book with their logo as proof you were there! So much fun.

Amazing store! Incredible history, great selection of books (mostly in English), and the best kind of atmosphere. There was a girl playing piano in the reading room and I got to sit and read while I listened to her play. That is true happiness.

I'd been dreaming about visiting Shakespeare and Company for many years, and when my husband and I finally were there in May it DID NOT disappoint! From the lovely bookstore to the cafe, it was all wonderful. If you are in Paris, visiting this English language bookstore is a must. Just a heads up that lines can be long during peak tourist season, so going at the top of the day is a good idea. We visited three times over the course of three days and each time we were there, there was a quite a long line up. That being said, it's worth it to line up to experience a great place with a ton of history and excellent creative vibes. It's also a fun place to people watch and grab a coffee at the cafe.

I did not expect this famous bookshop to be so big on the inside. It even has a small museum and so many books that you can browse or buy. No pictures inside, but i took some outside and it was not a problem.

Quaint little bookstore with a lot of charm and character. There was a short line up to get in when we visited an hour or two after it opened in the morning. Several of the Paris walking tours pass though this area and I think this is a stop along them. It’s a bit of a tight squeeze inside and be aware they do no permit any large bags or backpacks inside (I heard one of the people who work at the store tell someone there’s a bag check next store if they need it). They also do not permit any photos inside. We enjoyed our visit to the bookstore and given we were in Paris, we thought it fitting to pick up a copy of the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Truly a must see if you are in Paris! I saw someone walking with a tote bag in Paris and I decided to google what this is. Online, I saw a great bookstore I had to visit! I got there early Saturday morning at 10am. It wasn't crowded yet and the bookstore is super fun to visit. There are 'rooms' with books everywhere, lots of books. They also have seating areas where you can read books, a piano and a café. Of course, I bought a tote bag!

Loved, loved, loved my experience here! This is definitely a staple visit when touring Paris. The smell of the books, the environment, everything was perfect for a book lover or a tourist. Oh and to top it off, the customer service was amazing. They should have been shutting down for the night and let us come in (we were last in last). They were so patient, I found a nice book to purchase, and got my official Shakespeare stamp on the book. I can’t wait to return and highly recommend a visit if you have time

If you love to read, check out the English bookstore Shakespeare and Co in Paris's Latin Quarter!! They do not allow pics inside out of respect for patrons wanting to enjoy themselves and read in peace. The line to wait outside does get long since they keep track of capacity in order not to overcrowd. If it's hot out, bring an umbrella and a bottle. There is a pretty fountain of drinking water that you can fill up your bottle with. The selection of books inside is amazing! On the outside the bookstore looks small but once you're inside, it expands way back and there is a 2nd floor dedicated for indoor reading space I believe. I spent a good amount of time here trying to decide what to buy for myself and for friends. The unique thing here is that at checkout, they will gladly stamp their signature stamp onto your books, making them perfect souvenirs. Oh and their tote bags are cute and very high quality.

Most people don't realize this was not the original shop frequented by the masters of old. The owner of this shop bought the name from Sylvia Beach after World War II and now profits off the tourism tied to the name. Listen, it's gorgeous. But it's pretentious. And always packed with the most obnoxious visitors. It's a BoBo haven. They ban photos, too... But I didn't listen. The cat upstairs deserves 5 stars.

One of my favorite book stores in the entire world. You can go in buy a book and leave or you can browse for hours. Due to covid restrictions there is a queue to get in, but it moves quite quickly. Great prices, great people, great books! How can you go wrong? Especially with wonderful restaurants right next door all overlooking Notre Dame.

Most magical and MOST favorite bookstore in the entire world! From when you walk in you can feel the history of this gem, you can imagine Hemingway and Syliva speaking in the corner, and the soul of countless writers and avid readers fluttering about. You always find a book to take with you and I love that they stamp it so you know it was found here! The quotes inside and outside give you pause to read and reflect as well. If you aren't a reader when you walk in, this place will surely inspire you to become one!

Oh my god yes. Go. It’s amazing. It’s so lovely. I spent like 3 hours reading in one of their no photos/videos reading room on a velvet bed thing and it was amazing. The books are surprisingly reasonably cheap and their selection is (in this humble book worm’s opinion) phenomenal. I was so torn between so many titles that I desperately wanted. I will also say that the tote bags are really high quality. I have lots of tote bags and of course I got the iconic Shakespeare and Company bag, and it is very worth the price. I’ve used it as a purse on and off for months and it still looks like new. No seam ripping or anything. The bookstore is beautiful, it’s story is beautiful, and I promise you will be happy you’ve gone if you like bookstores or feeling like you’re in a little fantasy inn.

a heavenly treat for book lovers. beautiful space, with a piano upstairs if you'd like to play. there is also a reading area on the second floor. the first floor covers a wide range of genres including a small section at the back for second-hand books priced at around €5. they have books both in French (small selection) and English. was there on a weekday and it was fairly crowded, but their crowd control was good.

Nice bookstore. Very popular among tourist, so you might see a long queue to enter the shop. You could find here some gems among shelves, but you'll need to do extensive search. Nice collection here, but not a lot of exceptional staff to wait for. The prices are also above average. So, I would recommend to visit and walk around if you don't see a huge crowd outside :)

Amazing experience! The most unique bookstore I have even encountered, full of small rooms overflowing with books. There are beds and chairs tucked among the shelves, giving you a place to sit and read or just enjoy the atmosphere in the store. Henry Miller called this place "a wonderland of books” and for a good reason. Bonus points for the live music from an local quartet on the top floor.

A must see for all the book lovers. It is an old library and it kept an old atmosphere, with old chairs and sofas, with old books, and a sleepy cat. The place is nice and cozy and you will love it as you enter the door. It is a bit crouded in the weekends, so I think it would be better to visit in a week day. People are nice and open to offer you any information you need. Also, you can enjoy your freshly bought book with a coffee/beer at their restaurant.

Didn’t think I would enjoy visiting a book store quite as much as I did . Lots of history surrounding the building itself and the actual famous people who have visited and stayed here over the years. The upstairs was my favourite as it just had a very calming and relaxing feeling to it . They actually have a nice book all about the bookstore that I decided to purchase.

A unique and wonderful place. The queue to get in moved quick. A lovely place that was so calming and magical to be in. You can browse and read there for free. Upstairs you can just exist and read and enjoy the books, it’s so hard to find places to be without needing to spend money and this was so lovely. If you love books, go.

I was a bit let down, mostly because you're not allowed to take any pictures inside. Which I understand, but it's still a shame because the atmosphere is so unique. It was quite crowded when we went around 1 p.m., but they did have a lovely selection of books. I unfortunately didn't get a chance to go upstairs.

The famous bookstore Shakespeare and Company at 37 Rue de la Bûcherie. The American Sylvia Beach started a small bookstore in 1919 that sold English-language literature in Paris. She is best known for being the first to publish James Joyce's controversial novel Odysseus in 1922. When the Germans invaded Paris in 1940, Sylvia Beach was imprisoned and the bookstore was destroyed. Today's bookstore was opened in 1951 by George Whitman. In 1964, the bookstore changed its name to Shakespeare and Company in honor of Sylvia Beach's original bookstore. Today, in addition to lots of literature, you will also find Sylvia Beach's own book collection, which is not for sale but anyone is welcome to read the books during the store's opening hours. The bookstore has for several years been a gathering place for those interested in literature and authors have also been able to live here. On the third floor are several beds ... The bookstore Shakespeare and Company appears in the films Before Sunset (2004) and Midnight in Paris (2011).

Very nice English bookshop! Its quirky rooms and crooked bookshelves make you feel somewhere halfway between the worlds of Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland. There are great choices of both English classics and modern litterature, and all other genres. The second floor offers some room to stay and read in a cosy and sheltered atmosphere. I really enjoyed it.

Do you believe in magic? Sometimes magic shimmers in little moments. Moments that make your heart sings and you feel grateful for your existence. We all live for those moments. Or better yet, we live IN those breathtaking magical moments! If you are a bookstagrammer you probably have come across hundreds of photos of a famous bookstore that is located in the heart of the Paris - Shakespeare and Company! At the beginning of the year 2021, I visited this remarkable bookstore and spent hours sniffing books and listening to live music. It was such a magical moment! It was unworldly! This bookshop is my most favourite place on Earth! 🖤💛

yes it's beautiful but i think it's a little overrated. the books are very expensive and so is their tote bag! it's forbidden to take photos inside which makes sense. you have to wait in a line to get inside. i don't think it's worth it that much and there are better bookstores that sell second hand books for a way cheaper price. the vibe inside of the shop is nice, but that's about it. and also all of the books were in english. i thought there would be at least some french books.

Its got to be one of the worlds greatest ironies that the best English language bookshop in the world is in the absolute centre of the Francophile world. If they can’t work out why Napoleon is spinning in his casket over at Les Invalides, this is probably why. Every time I’m in Paris we walk away with a book or dozen from here. Make sure you visit this.

One of my favorite places in Parise. Right on the Seine across from Notre-Dame it's picturesque and quaint. You walk inside and are reminded of a cozy library where you want to curl up with a coffee or tea and disappear into the world of books. There is something so authentic and unassuming about this place even though it has become so popular. It never lost its original charm.

One of my recommendation for any relatives who visit Paris. Here you can find enormous collection of english books and feeling the atmosphere of shopping in old bookstore. Kinda reminds me of the wand shop that you can watch in Harry Potter! They have library upstairs where you can read and they also provide some cozy reading spot. They have piano that you can play. And if you're lucky, you can meet their cute cat.

  • 3/5 Tyler A. 2 years ago on Google
Cute bookshop, but not sure it's worth waiting in line outside for. Great selection of English books. Besides the history and looks of the place, nothing particularly special. There are other more notable bookshops around; spend the time you'd wait in line here walking to those.

Cute book store with lots of photo op places. It’s very busy and has small walkways so it felt cramped. The cat is such a cutie but she seemed overwhelmed with everyone petting her and taking photos of her. I tried not to bug her.

The coziest place on the planet, and it welcomes both book worms and curious people. This place has the most delicate smell from different eras. Both in mail order and on site visiting, this bookstore checks all book lovers' boxes. You will spend hours in this place. Books in English in Paris.. how wonderful. Lots of nooks and small spaces to enjoy a book or look around their quality collections. Any trip to Paris deserves a visit across the river.

.. It is a wonderful place that smells of history and books, where you feel like you have gone back in time when you step through the door. It feels good to know that there are literary works coming out of this tiny place.

Honestly this space never disappoints. It feels like a community. Plus the cat 🐱 Aggie, walked up to me, completely unprompted and just…curled up into my coat and took a 20-30 minute nap.

Brilliant. I picked up a few books for the friends that I was staying with. They scanned the inside of the books with the Shakepeare and co logo so that was cool. I bought one of the canvas carry totes that I just love.

An amazing place for book lovers specially English books. There are huge collections of famous books and there is a place inside the bookshop to stay overnight in order to read books.

  • 5/5 Barbara Helena N. 1 year ago on Google
It is as magical as you'd think. The feel of getting inside and having little nooks and chairs to read, the construction itself and the history behind it makes it worth the visit. The organisation of books is clear and easy to navigate and it's lovely to see that some sections are decorated in the theme. Really loved going there!

  • 4/5 Mahmoud D. 1 year ago on Google
I liked the place, from outside it looks authentic and from inside it’s like a time machine! The only issue was to get inside, the line was huuge outside and it took me about 20 mins to get in! The structure and room placement is great and truly reflects the history of the city, the stairs were nice and the reading room felt like an old study. Unfortunately the cat was on leave 😅, the only take i have is that I expected a wider range of books especially literature, they have good titles but they were all mainstream.

  • 5/5 Kathy C. 1 year ago on Google
Crowded and touristy but still a great place to find English books you need! And cute tote bags. Go early! We went at opening just after 10, and it’s shorter line than it would be in the afternoon. Found all the books I was looking for!

  • 5/5 Lynn 1 year ago on Google
Many tourism bet also have many book-lovers come here to find the book. It is not very big, and the house has a long history, so the number of people in the house will be controlled (it is not allowed to take pictures indoors). There are two floors to visit If you want to buy canvas bags, you can go to the cafe next door. If you buy books, please remember to ask the clerk to leave a souvenir

  • 5/5 Adrian S. 1 year ago on Google
I would highly recommend a visit to this book store in Paris. They do all kinds of books from new to old. They have books in many languages also which is really cool. For those who love to read I would recommend buying a book from here. You also get their formal stamp on the inside of the book when buying here. It is not far from central Paris town. It is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Louvre.

Queues for this antiquarian bookstore would be very long but it moves fast. You could get inside for 20 to 30 minutes. As this was a famous bookstore, some books were sold out, so prepare your long list of books to buy so it wouldn't be a waste to line up for the books you have in mind. They have posted suggestions from the shelves and some bookstore clerks have their own suggestions. You can ask them but of course, their taste won't be the same as yours. Anyway, overall, I just love the experience thinking this was a place where some books are written and where authors had stayed.

In the end it's a bookstore but it oozes history and you are surrounded by book lovers which is a rare and priceless experience. The staff are knowledgeable and very friendly and the line to get in moves quickly. The upstairs reading room is a good place to slow down for a few minutes during your busy tourist day.

Famous Paris bookstore just across the Seine from Notre Dame. Fun to look inside, can get crowded and there can be a line to get in, but moves pretty fast. Most people buy a tote bag and a book or two. Upstairs is a reading room, not very quiet, but again, a fun and famous place to see. Worth about 30 minutes.

  • 5/5 Thais 7 months ago on Google
Lovely bookstore in Paris. As the name suggests, titles are in English and there's a huge variety of authors and styles. The place itself is very cozy and they even have a reading place on the second floor. People who work there are all nice and gentle. If you are a bookworm, you should definitely visit it. If you are not, you should too.

  • 5/5 Masuma H. 7 months ago on Google
It’s an awesome place to spend the whole day. I’m totally addicted to the ambiance of the book store. So many famous writers passed their quality time in this historic bookstore. Feel utterly privileged while roaming around the old & beautiful house.

Atmospheric, historical bookshop. You can feel the past glorious days of the Place. No photos are allowed inside. Huge variety of English books

This place feels magical, like traveling in time. There's a queue to get inside just because it is a small space and it can get crowded pretty fast, but the line moves quickly, there's a room upstairs if you wanna read and don't be bothered with other people bumping into you. Photos inside are not allowed, they have cool merch and souvenirs! The tote bag is pretty good quality and design!
