(Translated by Google) As with the automobile museum, it is a guaranteed step back. Even at a standstill, these trains, each more beautiful and impressive than the next, continue to make us travel by sight and thought. (Translated by Google) A beautiful collection of trains that perfectly reflects two centuries of history of the French railways, in the largest railway museum in Europe (two large halls). With different spaces of visit and animations, we can discover locomotives and wagons of XIXth and XXth centuries, superbly staged. Finally, a steam train, which starts every hour, it's all just magic. An address in Mulhouse that I highly recommend.

Amazon place, with an exceptional collection of trains, both ancient and new. Wonderful whether one is interested in history (trains are tightly linked to French and European history, but also to relationships with the US), in trains technology (a lot of details provided), in seing beautiful omthings from the past and of today. Spending 2 hours or the full day is possible: in any case, a marvel! There is also a "model making" section. Plenty of things to do with kids, in particular a comprehensive tour in a small train inside the whole exhibition.

Amazing museum! Suitable for anyone, children or adult, fan of trains or just interested in pretty trains. The average visit time indicated on the web site is 2h30 but I would say it's at least 3 hours maybe even 4. If you get hungry, there's a restaurant inside - a bit expensive but decent for a museum.

Beautiful and large train museum. Interesting exhibition about WW2 and the importance of rail transportation. Never new there was also a fourth class. The differences in the classes was huge. Loved the train cabin the French built for De Gaulle with the extra long bed. The sleeping cabins and restaurant cars were beautiful. Good restaurant at the museum.

It is not a bad museum, but there is nothing to explain the 13 eur entrance for adults and 9.5 eur for a child of 4 years old. There are trains there of all era's and description of them. Furthermore there is nothing else. If you really like trains this is nice, but for the average man or woman there is nothing special.

A cathedral of railway history. Wandering through this sprawling structure, I felt overcome by a spirit of deep reverence: for those towering leviathans of steel that helped create the modern world and transform the populace's conceptions of time, but also for the workers and engineers and even the politicians who helped make such a world possible. Even dormant, the old trains seem to possess an overwhelming and imposing force, feeling almost primordial in their grandeur and clean elegance of design while also signalling the birth of a different age, one of sophistication and glamour. They are harbingers of transformation, of an age that once seemed exhilarating and terrifying in its sheer dynamism, but one that we now look back upon nostalgically. Lingering in the darkness of what was once the old SNCF trainshed, they still seem almost alive, especially surrounded by a series of quite informative mini documentaries about railway travel throughout the last century and a half.

Great old train museum. My father-in-law really appreciate this place as he worked for the French railway station for 38 years from the ages of seventeen years old to the age of fifty five years of age. Many beautifully kept old train on displayed. The staff are very nice as well.

Beautiful museum even if you are not particularly interested in trains as you can learn about the history of the train in France. Good for kids as there is a noddy train to take kids (and adults) around the museum (included in the ticket price)

Our kids simply love it! Cool installations with audio where they exhibit real life conversations in trains in historic hall, then there's also a part for showing the trains outside and finally a hall with modern trains. So all about French trains and beyond. A tip: if you plan to visit several museums in the area, a museum pass can pay off especially if you have 2 or more kids, because one pass can take up to 5 kids with it

This place is a cathedral dedicated to the railway. A thorough exploration of the exhibition halls took me three hours. Special mention must go to the museum staff: the enthusiastic young man on the front desk gave me an overview, whilst the young lady in the restaurant was delightful and most helpful. Both spoke fluent English, which I appreciated - they were great ambassadors. I highly recommend this destination as an exceptional place to spend half a day!

It's a lovely place to visit, there are a lot of trains to see with a good mix of epocs, there are also lots of little bits and pieces dotted around. It is too much biased towards French speaking, not much information for tourists, which is perhaps a little like a dropped ball as the exhibits are made in France, Germany, UK and America! A special mention should be made for the kitchen, the team are doing some really good food, not like a typical museum but like a restaurant, worth going just for lunch. The lady at reception was very welcoming, had a big smile and was knowledgeable, she spoke English, maybe German too.

  • 5/5 Claudia C. 11 months ago on Google

  • 5/5 Henry de C. 8 months ago on Google
Great museum with a lot of things to discover and experiment with. The special activities (engine initiation, mini train, high speed train cabin...) are run by volunteers who are fully passionate. 90% of the content is inside therefore it is a good option in case of bad weather.

What an amazing museum! Such a large collection of trains, locomotives and carriages. There is also info available in English, but all of the interactive stuff is in French. My two year old was a little afraid of the first room (dark, noises and big trains), but he enjoyed it a lot in the end. He still talks about it a week later.

Visited the museum with our train loving daughter (age 8) and her tolerant sister (age 10) and we all enjoyed it - good selection of food in the restauran, lots of trains to see and 3 ride on trains for us to go on. Happy to recommend.

Jeden Cent Wert!

A place worth a visit, even if it doesn't rain and you don't know what to do with your 3 and 6 year old children. As in other French museums, the curators were able to put together didactic intent, sensationalism and national history.

  • 5/5 Richard Fenn G. 3 years ago on Google
Unfortunately I'm afflicted by some strange disease that makes me excited by trains and this place just exacerbated my condition! The museum is really well laid out with an obvious history of French railways. Although, you can discern the general gist of what's going on, sadly most signs are in French, so don't expect to lots of technical information in English. However, I was offered an audio tour at the start (presumably in English) but you had to have your own headphones and I'd left mine in the gite! The exhibits are in great condition and most have viewing platforms to help you see inside. The story of French obsession with rail speed is very interesting and contrast markedly with Britain's railways (however quaint ours are). The videos interspersed around the displays (although in French) are well worth watching as they show railway operations in some unusual settings. The only downside was the shop which appeared to be covid-paranoid rather than just secure. It also seemed a little pricey (but maybe that's thanks to Brexit!). A great place to spend a morning or afternoon, taking about 2-3 hours. Also, there is catering although they don't sell decaffeinated coffee - otherwise this was very good.

Absolutely love this train museum. There is a mini train ride on to take you around the trains. Love the video on TGV and also love the train models and display. Massive space for kids to run around. Adore the souvenir shop with a good collection of books. Although would be lovely to have more options for magnet. Additionally didn’t have the chance to explore all of the museum for some parts were closed as it was still running winter schedule in March.

(Translated by Google) Such a waste! This museum has great potential, but it is poorly organized and it is sorely lacking in explanation and consistency! I do not recommend the visit unless you are passionate and have extensive knowledge of the subject. We navigate in the middle of locomotives and wagons which follow one another in a great mixture without logical continuation (chronological or type). A poster in front of the elements presents only the model and a QR code provides access to more information. It is not at all fun, and makes the visit uninteresting. No explanation of how a train is driven, no possibility of seeing a driving position of a steam locamotive with explanations. A video shows a locomotive but the locomotive next to the screen is not the correct one (although it is in the collection 🤦). An electric locomotive is cut out in order to see the different elements that constitute it without explanation of the role of each. Different signage elements are present here and there without signs or QR code. It's a shame because the material presented and in great condition and the collections are important. This is not to pay homage to the restoration work carried out. Visit carried out under COVID health constraints.

👍👍 I like art and travel all over to see it. I've been to most of the big art museums all over the world and have seen hundreds if not thousands of paintings. The Mona Lisa is beguiling, Water Lilies are beautiful and Picasso is intriguing. Then I stumble upon this place in one of the hotel pamphlets....
