The city's largest cathedral was built at the beginning of the 19th century on the site where the wooden Trinity Church stood from the 16th century, and later a stone church. Catherine II ordered the construction of a new temple and allocated funds for it. The dome of the temple was larger in size than the dome of the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg, so there were doubts about the calculations and construction slowed down. But later the dome was completed, and it amazes with its gigantic size. The four-tiered bell tower dominates the old part of the city. The old altar was lost during Soviet times. Now the temple is decorated with a new altar.

The construction of this Holy Trinity Cathedral began in 1786 and was completed only in 1808. In 1818, the decoration of the temple was completed, and on April 10, 1819, on Easter Wednesday, the cathedral was consecrated by Bishop Anthony (Sokolov). The plan and facade of the cathedral were designed by the provincial architect I.D. Yasnygin, this is evidenced by a drawing and drawing signed by him personally, stored in the Central State Historical Archive. The cathedral is surrounded by a closely adjacent colonnade of Tuscan columns, with pilasters at the corners. In the spaces between the columns, in the upper part, sacred images of small sizes are placed. The side entrances are decorated with pediments on six columns, and in the pediments there are paintings on themes from sacred history. The dome of the temple, topped with a cross, was built in the Byzantine style in the shape of a hemisphere. This is the first unsupported dome in Russia, the internal diameter of which is 16.75 m (the outer diameter of the dome is 19.95 m).
