This forest is under the Kandy Municipal Council. It’s not open to the Public. You need to get special permission from the KMC to enter this premises. It’s a beautiful place and great for nature walking. Situated in the top of the Waakarewatta area, in the Middle of the Kandy City. This forest houses large varieties of the trees and its very interesting to spot the different ones. There is also a lake /water tank that supplies water to certain parts of Kandy.

It is actually a hidden gem. Its belongs to Kandy municipal council. It was a reserve forest from kings era.But English men removed tha tree cover from that land and make that land as a Coco & Cofee plantation. But after few years they had to face a water problem for kandy town. Then in 1910 they build two reservoirs in this land and make it as a rain forest again. Now we are seeing that replanted forest. We have to get permission from kandy municipal council to visit this forest.

A very quiet place for nature lovers. It's not very popular In fact it's doubtful that even the people in Kandy know the existence of this beautiful place. A special approval needs to be taken from the municipal council of Kandy if you want to enter the park. There are two lakes situated in the forest reserve which are used to supply drinking water to some parts of Kandy city. There are beautiful hiking trails which are not hard and they are very good for beginner hikers. This is the only forest reserve in Sri Lanka which is controlled and maintained by a municipal council.

A Hidden Gem. Owned by the Kandy Municipality. They have around 1700 acres of Virgin Jungle. Built by the Britishers as a water catchment area to cater to the needs of the Kandy town. Leopards could be seen. Can go in with permission for a nature Walk.

The Dunumadalawa forest reserve, located in the hill capital of Kandy, is also popularly known as Wakarawatte after its original estate name -Walker’s estate. Situated on the edge of the Hantane range just south of the main town this long abandoned tea, coffee and cocoa estate encompasses the watershed for Kandy’s main reservoir. Now a looming mixed forest replete with mature jak trees, wild tea trees and extensive swaths of ironwood, it is home to several troops of toque macaque monkeys, barking deer, wild boar sounders, porcupines, civet cats, golden palm cats, fishing cats and leopards. Since October 2003 investigations have been ongoing at this site in an effort to better understand its leopard population. Whether the leopards rumored to exist in the forest indeed did so and whether they are resident or merely occasional visitors were two of the primary questions of interest. At roughly 5 km2, the forest reserve is small and the leopards typically elusive. Using camera trap technology and long hours of tracking we have identified one resident female leopard with cub and one male. Discovering that the female was indeed a resident and not merely an infrequent visitor to the forest was significant as it underlines the importance of this reserve. That this is a resident population is further substantiated by the fact that over the past four years 3 leopards have been killed in the vicinity.

It's a shame that they treat tourists like this. We went to the municipality to ask for permission to enter and they told us that it was not necessary, that we asked for it at the entrance door. After walking 2 hours to the entrance they told us that we had to ask for it at the municipality. They don't care much about tourists like the rest of Kandy.

Most peaceful and beautiful place in kandy. And it was the only one forest that controls under Municipal Council. If you want to travel, you have to get a pass form the main gate or the Kandy Municipal Council

This area is an interesting area to visit for nature lovers. But unfortunately this place is not open to the public. Reservations for this area, located in Sri Lanka, can only be made after obtaining permission from the Kandy city council.

👍👍 One of the oldest tunnel build in Colonial era.Located very close to Kandy town ( around 500M from Dodamwala Junction). There is a hight limit so very tall vehicles can't travel though the tunnel. You can walk through tunnel. It is bit dark and cool environment with drops of ice cold water dropping...

👍👍 Mesmerizing view. Must visit during evening. No tickets. A good place to stop at and see the amazing view of Kandy city. We stopped here on our way to the famous Sri Maha bodhi temple. The place wasn't too crowded and there are some local vendors around.
