We in Kempten are very proud of this monument, which has been outstandingly restored. We took part in a guided tour on the “Open Monument Day”. Totally interesting, an incredible achievement by everyone involved. Thank you Kempten 👍It makes me very proud to have grown up here and to be able to live here. A visit to all of our historical buildings is always worthwhile and can only be recommended to every tourist. Unfortunately, the bridge is not yet integrated into the city tour at the moment, but we really hope and hope so!

It was built between 1848 and 1851 and 29 years later the middle part was reinforced with iron lashing straps because the trains that drove over it were getting heavier and heavier. In 1905 it was finally closed to trains because a new concrete bridge was built next door. In 1911 it was converted to accommodate cars They were able to drive until 1970, when it was converted again for pedestrians and cyclists. In 1988, Illerbrücke 1, as it had been called until then, was renamed the current name “König Ludwig Brücke”. In 2005, the bridge, made of larkwood and oak, was spanned with a net made of synthetic fibers to protect it from environmental influences. Despite this measure, it suffered further moisture damage, which was repaired in 2017 by completely dismantling the bridge and restoring it by the end of 2018 become.

Very beautiful view. Highly recommended for anyone who is even a little interested in the art of engineering and the history behind it. I was allowed into the interior privately, which is really very interesting.

The bridge has finally reopened after being closed for years. It turned out very nice. The tour of the bridge was also very interesting and informative. I like the paved path on the bridge better now than before when there were only paving stones there. Hopefully it will stay open and usable longer now.

The bridge has been perfectly restored and offers, for example, a great view of the historic industrial complex, which also dates back to the mid-19th century. There are several circular paths and small parks around the bridge. It's worth a visit.

The King Ludwig Bridge is a bridge over the River Iller in the town of Kempten in the Allgäu. The Royal Bavarian State Railway structure was built in the middle of the 19th century. The bridge now serves as a pedestrian and bicycle bridge.
