The visit to the gallery was a wonderful experience. I love the architecture of the building and the surroundings. The location is great, in a practical and historical sense. A tip! If you are going to visit on Sunday, be there before 10.30, otherwise you will find a very long queue. You should definitely see also the temporary exhibition of Louvre (potraits). You should estimate 3 hours at least for all the collections.

A middle size national gallery. BUT, as i Turkish citizen , it was fun to visit at all. Do you know why? Well i had chance to visit the gallery early in the morning of a Sunday. It was pretty non congested. So i started my tour in temporary section. In this section i saw couple of fine contemporary art. It was international. Then i proceeded to main building. The building is divided into 3 parts, every part is at different levels. When i entered the ground floor, 19 th century greek art wellcomed me, with full of independence? oil on canvases. I was always surprised with active modern Greek History, has been fully influenced and filled with Turkish opposition. I always think it is a hard burden to carry for decades, anyway, none of my business, but this burden halted the progression of art. And… i climbed to the third floor, which belongs to current greek art. Oh yeah i was impressed with so many techniques and free minded creativity. That was good. Especially Yannis Moralis and Giorgos Rorris i have never heard of them till now, fantastic artistS. From now i am their fan.

Every time I go into the National Gallery I'm always happy to see the permanent and/or other unique exhibits on show.👍😊 Today's visit was truly special & educational; with many gems to admire in a modern, clean cut setting in an Exhibit called ... In Search of Immortality. The Art of Portrait, In The Collection Of The Louvre Exhibit👍😍👍 It goes without saying that last year's reopening of the renovated National Gallery was a welcome addition to the City's art/cultural scene ... and I believe ... should be considered as a must visit attraction in Athens ... for locals and visitors alike 😊😉 After wandering around the exhibition/s you might also want to check out the cafeteria ... for some refreshments & snacks ... with tables both indoors & outside. 👍😊👍

The new building is really modern and nice. The treasures the museum has are remarkable. This is the only criterion to visit it. The paintings, sculptures and installations have no room no "air" to give visitors the feeling they deserve. It is really like a storehouse. As a visitor I did not have the chance to think feel admire the art. As a parent It was difficult to find spots of interest for my young kids. And no interaction and no digital things to play with. As a educator (in CS) I found a typical old fashioned museum struggling to find ways to make it interesting and accessible for our young students.

The newly opened National Gallery is another art space that must be visited if you are interested in Greek modern art. The gallery is located near the Evangelismos Metro stop, on the corner of Vasilissis Sofia Av. and Vasileos Alexandrou Av. You can also see “The Runner”/“Flying Nike” from the gallery. The gallery is divided into 3 levels, with different art periods. There is also a temporary art space, which usually costs 5€ extra on top of the 10€ admission price.

The only proper fine arts museum in Athens with artworks from early portraiture to contemporary art. To visit the temporary exhibition you need a special 15 euros combo ticket

The National Gallery is a truly beautiful art gallery with a huge collection of painting works, sculptures, engraving works and other forms of art, from the 18th century. Here you will see the artistic character of many great Greek and, foreign creators, a highly recommended activity for any Art lover!

First of all, instead of giving the responsibility of the building to one architectural office there should be an architectural competition so the best can be chosen. Architectural flaws was easily spotted such as bad lighting design (especially close to the ramp, were the lights don’t follow the slope). Last but not least, the logo was purely designed. However, the exhibition was pretty interesting.

Definitely worth a visit - an impressive modern building and an excellent presentation of Greek artists from the 19th century to the present. I also recommend the cafe on the lowest floor - efficient service with seating inside and outside. An easy walk across Rizari Park from Evangelismos metro station. Discount available for over 65s.

Beautiful building. Wonderful staff. Nice layout of the collections. Minimum three hours to walk around (as a novice). Ramps and elevators. Big clean bathrooms on every floor. There is a restaurant and coffee shop. 10-15€ entry fee. Highly recommended.

Interesting glimpse into greek paintings of 19-21 century. It's interesting to see how trends in Greek Visual arts were connected to general European trends. Fascinating Installations. Nice cafe downstairs. Easy accessible with subway.

This recently renovated gallery is awesome! It has a large collection including three paintings by El Greco! I went on a Sunday and enjoyed my walk through this gallery. The pieces are displayed according to their era. There are three floors plus a lower level and there is a ramp and an elevator if you want to avoid stairs. On the top floor there is a restaurant with a lovely view that I definitely recommend!

Very beautiful building and its surroundings. At the entrance there is a big touch screen where all the paintings are digitally saved with its details. This is the best part of the museum. If anyone wants to see a specific painting of a specific painter they can find it from the digital screen then find the exact location where the paintings are kept. It will be a timesaver for them.

This museum focuses solely on Greek artists. My companion and I enjoyed reading about the different art periods and their influences on Greek art and culture. All artwork was labeled and had Greek and English titles. We also had a tasty meal at the cafe. The building is modern and blissfully air conditioned. The collection is not big, but it was interesting.

A must-do. Although Athens is not the art capital of Europe. 🖼️ Arranged in chronological order right through the 21st century.

A national treasure. Doing lots of efforts. I guess the problem is the management. The manager that was in charge when 2 paintings From Picasso and Pierre Mondrian were stolen, is still in place. And nobody is gonna move her.

Very nice architecture and building, a brand new actually and minimal especially inside. The whole collection and the exhibits are nice and carefully placed. However, it's not a big collection generally speaking, there are no female artists, it could be more technologically updated and not "old fashioned" somehow. Also, staff is not actually polite, both the ones at the ticket desk and the ones at the rest of the building, placed around the exhibits.

Great national art gallery. Modern, large but not overboard... levels are per century 18th ,19th,and 20th. Great flow of works and good descriptions of the Greek artists. The view from the building allows you to see all of Athens city area. Price of entrance decent. The staff helpful and there is also a ramp outside entire building 🏢 for all levels.

National gallery has a good selection of almost every painting style from mostly Greek artists or artists depicting Greek scenes. The building is very interesting and modern. I would visit it again for sure.

My partner and I have been travelling in Greece for two weeks, and it's been a truly exceptional experience here. We were expecting this gallery to be another lovely addition to Athens, however we were pretty much refused entry to the gallery due to my partner's medical exemption for wearing a face covering. It's a very genuine exemption which my partner will be recieving surgery for next month, and wearing a covering triggers heavy bleeding. We very nearly walked out in shock of how disrespectful the crowd of staff that had gathered around us were. After a battle, they allowed us into the gallery. We were both very stressed by this point which completely soiled the whole experience. Other members of staff as we walked around also forced a face covering on her which we had to re-explain with just as much force as the first battle. Once we reached a good distance through the museum, we discovered staff also not wearing face coverings! The purpose of this review is to ensure the staff show at least a little understanding for the future, as there are many better ways to spend the entry fee than be in arguments with staff for the first 20 minutes of entry. I hope nobody else experiences what we did this evening. Note: the art here is well worth seeing. Wish we could have enjoyed it!

Brand new building, clean lines, spacious and with plenty of natural light to view the 3 floors of artwork laid out. All Greek artists (of course) spanning hundreds of years, this is a must visit place for anyone with the slightest interest in art and painting.

Probably the most “international looking” museum of the city with the rather new acropolis museum. I won’t judge the quality of the Greek artworks exhibited here but if you’ve already existed all the must-see attractions already, you can spend two hours here to visit the four floors of exhibition. He said that the museum shop is so poor of books in other languages, but Greek. I hope that a lot of locals visit this museum thanks to the temporary exhibitions.

A wonderful collection of art from the last few hundred years. A perfect compliment to everything else we’ve seen in Athens, which is focused on artefacts from thousands of years ago. The 3rd floor restaurant has fascinating panoramic views and serves a delicious cheese sharing plater. Perfect with Mamos beer

Spectacular paintings by all-time Greek artists, very representative of and helpful to understand Greece's main historical events as well as Athens' evolution in the last 200 years. Includes several religious artworks and a small but significative collection of International masters. A must!

A total reimagining of the National Gallery. The collection is primarily Greek in focus, but wide-ranging and includes some amazing art. The new building and hand allow the works to be enjoyed at leisure. Not necessarily the first place you will visit in Athens, but definitely well worth spending a few hours in. Disappointingly the café and restaurants hadn't opened yet, when I visited a month ago.

I went to this gallery a couple of days ago and it really was worth it. The price is 10€ for the permanent exhibition and it's an additional 5€ for the temporary one (which I thought was worth it). It is free for people younger than 18. The paintings were spectacular with immense history (especially the ones from the 1800s and early 1900s) The modern arts floor didn't amaze me as much as the others. If you truly want to appreciate the paintings and look at each one for quite some time just know you'll need a lot of time. The additional 5€ were also worth it, if anything I think it was up to standard with the rest of the exhibition. There is a store with some items to purchase yet it is not on the top floor like it says. It's on the ground floor. One thing that did frustrate me was the way they labelled the paintings. Sometimes paintings were quite close to eachother or even above one another. You could not tell sometimes, when it wasn't specified, which label suited the right painting. PS: I barely took any pictures of the art from the greek revolution and if anything it's for the better; it is far more different to see them up close. They are much better!

Not my favorite art museum I've been too. Definitely lots of Greek artists, with some international ones as well. The building is beautiful and easy to get through. İ went on free ticket day, so that made up for the somewhat underwhelming feeling İ had walking away. The only interesting piece (imo) was a burnt wood casket on the top floor. İt has a two way mirror inside of it so you can see yourself. İt was cool, and that's about it. Mostly portrait paintings.

Incredibly well put together museum, which flows together great but also has something for mostly everyone. I was not very familiar with greek artists and really fell in love! It’s free for under 25 years old, and has a ramp but no elevator. It’s 4 floors however, so maybe not great with accessibility.

I really enjoyed this new Athens museum, even though it isn't quite finished yet. The sculpture garden, for example, is still off limits until November. The collection of 19th, 20th and 21st century Greek art is amazing and I discovered many artists I didn't know and who deserve to be known by a wider public.

One of the highlights of the National Gallery is its impressive collection of Greek and European paintings, spanning from the 14th century to the modern era. Visitors can marvel at iconic works by renowned artists such as El Greco, Nikos Engonopoulos, and Yiannis Tsarouchis, among others. A comprehensive overview of Greek art history, showcasing the evolution of artistic styles and techniques over the centuries. My favorite museum in Athens, with a lot to see and admire! Entry ticket 10EUR

Amazing masterpieces-mostly are paintings! Even Cafe & restaurant are closed now under safety protocol, the Athens view from its restaurant is top, worthy to run for booking when it will open..Gkikas & modern Art on 3rd floor was great, Go for it!!

Some part of the collection was very inspiring. However the modern artworks are not displayed properly and lacking of descriptions. The general curation could be improved.

One of the hardest reviews to write by far. The recently renovated museum is a joy to behold and 3 hours is the bare minimum to see everything and everyone will find something to take your breath away. Access for the impaired is also excellent which many buildings in Greece sorely lack currently. Unfortunately, the traveling or temporary exhibitions space is still not open and will consist of the building's basement floor. It seems that a huge opportunity has been wasted. The addition of just a single extra floor during renovations which lasted years is not near enough and everything feels crumped. There is no space for the painting collection to grow and develop unless they start hanging the paintings on the ceiling. I love the work currently on offer but the immense joy I felt going in became a bittersweet aftertaste in the end If you haven't been yet a one-time visit is a must if interested in art. I just don't think it will keep the public's interest or transform the area for years to come in a similar vein to what the Niarchos foundation managed to achieve with its opera and national library.

  • 5/5 Mike Z. 1 year ago on Google
Definitely a place to visit, the basic collection is impressive and surprisingly beautiful. Nicholas Gizis def my favorite. Have to visit again. And have to advise that in comparison with the museums/national galleries abroad, the price is ultra cheap and fair to attract everyone to learn about culture and history. Thanks again Stavros Niarchos foundation.

Impressive art gallery, representative of Greek art, including one floor with modern art that is actually thoughtful, as well as classics by Moralis, Tsarouchis, and more Greek painters. Topics are varied and include the independence war of 1821, people, dead nature and more.

  • 5/5 Kristina G. 1 year ago on Google
Very impressed with the actual facility that housed all the great Greek painters art work .. the staff very friendly .. however I was disappointed that the entire “Parthenis” collection was gone to another exhibit with the exception of 2 pieces. El Greco section was closed due to light issues. But overall I did give 5 stars due to the facility

  • 3/5 sofia m. 2 years ago on Google
The artwork is stunning, the building is beautiful and the three floors are well organised by period. However, the exhibitions are not very user friendly. There is not a path to follow. You don’t know where to start, and as you walk through a room the signs explain what you see but as you exit from the other way the sign are reversed. It would be much better to have a path to follow like in other museums and see the signs in the proper order. Also, in many paintings (mostly the ones under glass but also some that are not) they are many reflections and it can’t be observed correctly (see photos)

Highly recommended for everyone, even if you don't love art (like me). Huge building 3 levels full of history and art. We spend more than 2,5 hours due to its rich context and big variety. It's not only for tourists, it's literally for everyone. We paid 15€ ticket but it included a Louvre gallery as well so the main ticket will be cheaper.

Excellent national gallery, housing important work of arts. There is also great cafe and restaurant and museum shop. Totally recommended!

  • 3/5 The W. 2 years ago on Google
There was a notable sense of amateurism in the set up and operation of the National Gallery. Someone should inform them that one of the artists they host, Chronis Botsoglou, has passed away some weeks ago. The artwork was of course rewarding. Maybe the selection on the 3rd floor need some enhancement but this may just be my subjective view.

The National Art Gallery has reopened in 2021 after 8 years of renovation. The new glass facade is impressive. The collection includes works of famous Greek artists from the 19th-21st centuries.
