Decent place with kind hearted staffs. It was winter we visited . Wanted to challenge the weather to see 5 color lakes along with our 4 and 9 years daughters. The staff suggested not to attempt , if only we follow the foot steps . But we were lost in the middle of no where . One of the staff suggested to come in spring time for the hike.

Well maintained - free parking and nice trails. You can walk to the blue color bishamon pond from there (though there is closer parking as well, it's just 5min walk) Considering there might be bears around, we were feeling more confident entering the trail from the visiting center side as there were more people around. Dogs allowed on the trail (though the sign on the visiting center says they don't recommend taking pets on trails considering the bears might feel intimidated.) You can also rent rain boots as well as a bell for the bears in the visiting center.

Here is the starting point of the trekking trail. (You can start from the other side too) Friendly staffs (speaking Japanese). They provide sufficient information and able to suggest you the best route apart from the five Color lakes.

Free parking. Can also park a bit higher near the first pond since the actual trail starts from there.
