Amazing. The cave system is huge. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and kept the whole tour on track. Beware, this can be a physically tough tour. Lots and lots of steps, steep incline and declines and very, very tight squeezes through the tunnel system. Hiking boots or trainers are the only suitable shoes. This is a magical place. The geology and history of mankind locked in these caves is stunning. When you exit the cave system, take a moment to appreciate the highveld scenery... It is breathtaking

Impressive caves with a rich history and importance for humanity. Nearly all of the publicly available parts of the cave are lit, the slopes are cut into stairs and the path is covered in thick anti-slippery floor mats. The cave has many halls of impressive size, with the most impressive perhaps being the Elephant hall. The guides are knowledgeable and friendly and you are certain to get a good history lecture on the fossils found in the cave. Bringing children is not a problem, but infants and toddlers will be a bit challenging, though not impossible. They have no toddler-sized helmets and there is one steep and narrow descending passage while leaving the cave which requires you to crunch down while simultaneously holding your child in your arms, which requires some agility and dexterity.

Fantastic heritage site that takes you into the crust of the earth and exhibits ancient caves were fossils were found. A perfect day out for the family but beware of the tight spaces you need to crawl through. The guides are knowledgeable and provide lots of information on the history of the cave.

what a beauty of a place full of so much history and knowledge. the tour felt like a mini warm up before heading to the gym. πŸ˜‚ i was prepared for the activity and didn’t know it was so nice and cool underground. the tour guide was a great sport.

This was such great fun with a professional friendly guide who took us through the caves and explained everything in detail. There is an area to sit at where one can order food and drinks. Great way to spend a Sunday. The only thing i did not like is seeing how people litter with their masks and hair nets. Not cool. Throw your litter away and respect our earth.

O my, this was an amazing experience. I would definitely recommend it πŸ‘Œ. Take a flashlight, you definitely want to see everything in there. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, there are a few narrow spots that you have to climb through. It is a total workout, lots of stair climbing. Have something to drink afterwards at the restaurant. Enjoy the experience!

Why have we never done this??? What a magnificent experience! Ourbtour guide was friendly and professional. The caves were spectacular. And the museum building was excellent. There were some challenging parts in the caves to crawl and slide through, but all part of a great experience.

A truly eye opening experience. My family and I had a wonderful time exploring the caves and learnt so much. Would definitely recommend this excursion to anyone who wants to be fascinated by the vastness of life.

A wonderfully educational experience. Our guide was knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour. The tour is set up to enable almost anyone to visit! Be prepared to get down and dirty into smaller crawlspaces. We had a lovely experience. We enjoyed it even more because we visited the Maropeng Visitors centre beforehand and already had a lot of context to the tour. A great activity to do as a family, school or just as a couple. I just wish they would make the tour groups a little bit smaller so that you have more time to interact with the guide and the surroundings.

A truly unique and unforgettable experience, exploring the caves where some of the world's oldest fossils were discovered. To think, you are in an area where an ancient civilisation possibly lived, millions of years ago. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes as there is quite a number of steps, some slippery areas, and tight spaces. In our group were two elderly ladies who did the tour quite comfortably, so you don't need to be very fit as some have mentioned. Just be careful and use the handrails in the steep areas. If you are doing both the Sterkfontein Caves and Maropeng museum, I would recommend at least an hour and a half in between, and start with the caves - so if your first tour starts at 10am, the next should be at 12h30. It gives you enough time to take a break, freshen up, and drive to the next site. Enjoy this beautiful country of ours and support local tourism - and tip the tour guide πŸ˜€

They need to tell you to book online. Don’t pay in person otherwise you’re not guaranteed a spot to go in. Plenty of unhappy people left.

What a wonderful wonderful experience. I definitely suggest everyone to at least see the birthplace of our species at least once in their lives. This was my second time here and I'm dumbfounded by the guides' continued passion and dedication to the route and the history of the area. My experience was filled with kindness and awe. Thank you, team!

Must go outing, for those living in Gauteng. We took our kids for a short trip on Sunday afternoon. The caves present a different experience to what most outdoor activities in Gauteng have to offer. Going down into a prehistoric cave is a refreshing break, especially for those of us with kids younger than 10.

Really great experience, tour guides are professional and knowledgeable. Closed toe shoes and long pants a must. Quite a few places in the caves that requires crawling and tight maneuvering but makes it an authentic experience.

Excellent tour guide. Thank you LAWZI. Great experience. Worth the long drive. Not for people with physical disabilities; lots of climbing, crawling, walking, slippery and wet tiny places. Book online; ensure your tickets are correct. Each place has its own ticket. Give your self time for a meal in between visits. Tours are long and exhausting, but lots of fun for the entire family.

Going through these caves is eerily intriguing, the tour guide explains various parts of the trip and you get to experience first hand a site where where some of the oldest homosapien fossils were found. It has a bit of exercise in it too so best to wear hiking or gym gear and comfortable closed walking shoes or clothes you can bend or crawl in. You are not allowed to take videos in the cave.

The cave tour was really nice, something you should definitely do once. Our tour guide was AMAZING, (Think his name was Mfanna) very Historical, knowledgeable and full of fun jokes... Keep up the great service- Even the restaurant and bathrooms were sparkling clean and the food was great! The Museum building that you can walk through before or after your tour is also packed with lots of interesting historical findings. Spend some time (reading) in the museum before your cave tour because you are a bit tired afterwards to do so. There are ALOT of stairs/steps, some parts of the cave are muddy and other parts are very dusty, but overall I enjoyed it so much.

Informative and adventurous experience. It is advisable to do this tour after visiting the Cradle of Humankind as the 2 are somewhat linked. Our tour guide was energetic, friendly and accommodating to all who attended. Lots to see if you're willing to get a little dirty.

What a great experience! Our guide was very informative and told us about the history of humankind, fossils found in the area, and lots of interesting facts about cave formation in general. The tour entails quite a few stairs and some pathways require you to squat/duck through, so it isn't for anyone with knee/back/etc issues.

  • 4/5 Teresa G. 2 years ago on Google
It was an awesome experience with wonderfully friendly and helpful staff, but I think some warnings should be placed on the website about the difficult & slippery terrain and 320 steps inside the caves, specially for the elderly, small children or people with mobility issues. If you are healthy and reasonably fit, this would have little to no impact on you.

What a great experience. Fun scary interesting. Not for overweight, unfit or Claustrophobic people. Places are tight dark wet. I wouldn't recommend for small kids or elderly. Overall an amazing experience lots of stairs. If you get there early you can go up and have meals etc. Food is good and guides are great. A definite treasure. Worth every penny.

I absolutely loved visiting the Sterkfontein caves, I highly recommend buying a package for both caves - this will give you the best experience The caves is quite deep and requires a lot of walking- Don't attempt if you're claustrophobic! This was a tour to remember! Our guide was super passionate about this tour and even snuck in a few jokes - keeping the tour light-hearted. I'm claustrophobic and was worried that being in the cave would give me anxiety, but it was really manageable. I'm a little saddened by the fact that we could not crawl through due to COVID safety regulations. Overall the tour was exciting, informational and fun! Only warning: the climb back up the stairs is exhausting, go at your own pace! :)

Our learners were very excited to learn new things and get to see and touch different historical pieces they only read in books such as the Millennium Sundial time track, this was an amazing experience. I would definitely recommend it to other schoolsπŸ‘Œ. It's also a place to visit for families too. You just need to take a flashlight, you definitely want to see everything in there. Moreover this couldn't have been that exciting if it had not been for the well informed Tour guide we had, Mr Kamogelo. Thank you and keep it up.
