J.
Zikaro's
house
(J.
Zikaro
st.
3,
Kaunas)
became
a
branch
of
the
National
M.
K.
Čiurlionis
Art
Museum
in
2001,
when
the
sculptor's
daughter
donated
it
to
the
museum.
For
a
long
time,
one
of
the
first
semi-secret
museums
of
J.
Zikar's
works
operated
there.
After
the
death
of
her
daughter
Alytė,
a
memorial
exhibition
was
also
installed.
Next
to
the
Kaunas
School
of
Art
in
a
new
wooden
house
in
1932.
The
Zikar
family,
based
here,
spent
a
life
full
of
happy
and
very
dramatic,
tragic
events
here.
A
teacher
at
the
Kaunas
Art
School,
the
first
professional
sculptor
spent
only
12
years
here
-
in
1944.
the
artist
voluntarily
withdrew
from
life
in
order
to
protect
his
family
from
persecution
and
exile.
Thanks
to
his
daughter
Alytė,
not
only
his
works,
sketches,
documents,
letters,
things,
but
also
bright
memories,
which
she
generously
shared,
were
very
diligently
preserved.
Therefore,
creating
the
exhibition
was
very
interesting,
because
there
was
an
opportunity
to
dispose
of
endless
authentic
objects
and
stories.
The
daughter
asked
that
it
not
be
a
"museum"
(a
holy
and
silent
place).
She
wanted
it
to
remain
home:
alive,
noisy,
open.
Such
an
atmosphere
is
created
in
the
new
exhibition
by
the
faces
appearing
in
the
video
installations
of
those
who
used
to
gather
here
to
discuss,
play
chess,
and
taste
the
delicacies
of
Zikarienė.
Intimate
letters
are
spread
here,
in
which
children
shared
their
love
for
their
parents,
and
parents
-
gentle
lessons,
letters
in
which
Zikar
expresses
his
devotion
to
his
wife,
his
muse,
and
mourns
the
sudden
death
of
two
children
within
six
months.
Next
to
it
is
a
box
with
Zikarienė's
inscription
"My
greatest
jewels",
in
which
strands
of
hair
from
all
the
children
have
been
preserved.
The
workshop
meets
a
skull
that
was
found
while
digging
the
foundations
of
the
future
house.
She
became
the
guardian
of
Zikar's
"male
space",
because
the
wife,
who
did
not
like
the
skull,
did
not
want
to
set
foot
in
the
man's
workshop.
In
the
room
of
the
father
and
the
boys,
the
viewer
will
find
an
unexpected
design
object
from
the
First
World
War
-
a
piece
of
furniture
that
served
as
a
bed
at
night
and
as
a
desk
during
the
day,
at
which
the
Zikars'
sons
prepared
lessons.
Here
are
the
grade
books,
which
reveal
that
the
boys
were
quite
advanced
and
not
very
inclined
towards
science.
On
the
father's
desk
are
unique
teaching
plans,
in
which
the
future
tasks
of
Art
School
students
are
encoded
not
in
words,
but
in
drawings.
The
house
is
filled
with
children's
laughter,
which
echoes
through
these
rooms
as
they
run
around
in
circles.
"Santa
Lucia"
sounds
in
the
living
room,
which
the
sculptor
listened
to
with
his
painter
friend
Jonas
Mackevičius,
sipping
Limoncella
and
reminiscing
about
the
latter's
travels
in
Italy.
Art,
the
authentic
environment
of
interwar
houses,
unique
views
of
Kaunas,
many
interesting
details
of
the
house,
interior,
residents'
lives,
sounds,
smells
create
an
atmosphere
where
time
disappears.
You
will
be
told
about
this
and
more
by
the
tour
guide
and
manager
of
this
house
-
Rasa
Jonė
Ruibienė,
who
regularly
leads
tours
here
"J.
Zikar.
Everything,
in
my
Homeland,
in
your
name."
It
is
true
that
you
need
to
register
for
this
excursion
in
advance.
