The
Deutsches
Eck
with
the
huge
monument
is
now
a
popular
meeting
place,
tourist
magnet
and
landmark.
When
you
stand
in
front
of
it
you
are
very
impressed
by
its
size.
The
German
Corner
was
created
for
the
Kaiser
Wilhelm
Monument,
an
artificially
raised
headland
at
the
mouth
of
the
Moselle
and
the
Rhine.
The
equestrian
statue
of
Kaiser
Wilhelm
I
was
inaugurated
on
August
31,
1897
in
the
presence
of
his
son
Kaiser
Wilhelm
II.
The
monument,
which
the
Rhine
Province
had
commissioned
for
the
monarch's
100th
birthday,
was
intended
to
commemorate
the
founding
of
the
German
Empire
in
1871.
As
a
thank
you
to
the
prince
for
the
unification
of
Germany
fought
for
in
three
wars
(1864,
1866,
1871).
Shortly
before
the
end
of
the
Second
World
War,
the
statue
was
destroyed,
and
from
1953
to
1990
its
base
served
as
a
“Memorial
to
German
Unity”.
Since
its
purpose
was
fulfilled
after
reunification,
a
replica
of
the
original
sculpture
group
was
placed
back
on
the
base
in
1993.
The
monument
is
37
meters
high,
with
14
meters
being
the
equestrian
statue,
and
the
weight
of
the
bronze
statue
is
63.5
tons.
It
is
based
on
the
plans
of
the
architect
Bruno
Schmitz.
