Also known as World's 1st university. You have to climb too many (250+) stairs since it was built on top of the hill but all the effort is worth it. Excavated by sir john Marshall and is very well preserved by kpk govt. A stream comes on the way that supplies water to the federal ❤️❤️❤️

Jaulian, quite close to the Taxila Museum, has the remains of an ancient Buddhist monastery dating back into the millennia. It is almost 5000 old city and ruins of world first University. The monastery apparently also used to house one of the oldest/earliest universities in the world and was a center for scholars from many parts-- India, Afghanistan, China, Persia, Greece, and so on. It is quite well maintained and has survived surprisingly well over time. Do go and see it. Simply entrancing. It is older then the History of Jesus.

Such a beautiful place, full of history and serenity. The whole monastery and its surroundings create a peaceful space to meditate and take a deep dive into history. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and is being taken care of by government. A lot of artifacts from this site have been shifted to Taxila Museum. A must visit place for history lovers and anyone who wants to relax and meditate. Adult entry: Rs. 50 Foreigners: Rs. 500

Such a well kept historical site! We were very fortunate to have this lovely guide called Sayed. She is so passionate about Buddhism history and historic site that she goes above and beyond on giving us information about the ruins. There are many rare historic Buddhism status that you can hardly find any where (even in Buddhism country like in Thailand) except old ruin like this place. If you are history buff, this is a must to visit site

It was good. You could easily pass by this site without realizing. Access is by several flights of steps which take you to the top of the hill, the higher you climb the better the view. There is an entrance fee, the tour guides are very knowledgeable but be prepared to pay them at the end of the tour.

Jaulian is a Buddhist monastery located in Khanpur area of Khyber Pakhtukhwa, Pakistan. On way to khanpur dam from taxila, a small roads leads to Jaulian Temple and Monastery. The monastery is located on a hill top and a small clear water canal from Khanpur Dam flows near its foots. Government of Pakistan has built stairs to reach the top but its a tough hike. It involves climbing approximately 250 stair cases. However, when reach the monastery, it is a haven for archaeologists. There is a pool of rituals up on the hill, it is filled with sand now. Many Buddha stupas are there in different formations.

Seeing them you cannot believe that the ruins of the Julian, Buddhist Monastery date back to the fifth century BC. This Monastery and the College are located on top of a hill. You can also see the remarkable stops here too. They are intricately decorated with figures depicting the life and philosophy of Buddha. You can also see some meditation chambers here. The most interesting statue of Julian is that of the Healing Buddha. Legend goes that if you put your finger in the hole in the troso you will be healed of all illnesses. Another interesting feature of this monastery is that it was built to be earthquake resistant as the walls were made of a combination of small and large stones to absorb the shock. Sadly the area could not be made attack resistant so it was ravaged by the White Huns around 450 BC.

A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. A must visit in the taxilla archeological trail. It’s a shocker and it has stuff the Buddhist world can only dream of! The ashes of bhudda are here. The prayer belly button bhudda is here. The words. And over 2000 yrs old! But beware of the gift shop seller at the entrance he will sell you fake stuff and try to pass them off as the genuine artifacts found in the crop fields.... and he won’t take no for an answer... best not to make eye contact.

If you're a fan of ancient ruins you'll feel right at home here. This place houses the things used by ancient people and the remains of their status. There are markings on the statues and on the walls which surely mean something which we can't comprehend. You should spend at least a couple if hours here to see everything with ease.

A great palce to visit. Its almost 4-5km away from Taxila on way to Khanpur dam. If you are planning to visit Khanpur dam, do visit the Julian Budhist Stupa Site. Its an archaeological site and specially very sacred for the budhists. Its the first univerisity and a religious congregation point. The foreigner visitors from Thailand and South Korea especially visit this place. The place includes a place for servers where they used to cook food for the pilgrims. There was special rooms for meditation, taking bath and assembly hall where the pilgrims used to pray for three months. Numerous stupas are also there with engraved Budha in various postures. The part of the statue of Budha have been shifted to Taxila museum. Also, the history tells us that Mongols have damaged numerous Budha Statues and stupas. There was a pool for bath or ablution. The place has been an isolated place and it appears that only rich pilgrims could afford to come here from far of places like China, Afghanistan etc. The entry fee for Pakistanis is Rs. 20. From the ground floor upto the site, almost 250 stairs have been built to reach the site. It will be hard for the elderly people to get up there through these stairs. Photography inside the site is not allowed, so cant upload the pictures. Its a UNESCO declared heritage site and surely a well-maintained site.

Gandhara, the cradle of the great Buddhist Civilisation, was the main centre of the Gandhara kingdom more than 3,000 years ago. This city was home to many splendid Buddhist establishments important among them being Julian, the oldest university, a centre of learning from the 5th century BC to the 5th century AD. The site has been included in Unesco’s world cultural heritage list.

I will must appreciate the government of KPK for good preservation of this historic site. Jaulian was built in the 2nd-century CE – around the same time as the nearby Mohra Muradu Jaulian, along with the rest of ancient taxila. The ruins at Jaulian are situated on a hill top, and consist of: a main central stupa, 27 peripheral smaller stupas, 59 small chapels displaying scenes from the life of Budha. A statue of Buddha in a votive stupa with a hole in the navel was called the "Healing Buddha". Pilgrims would put their fingers in the icon's navel, and pray for cures of various ailment. Original map of monastery I share too, which I take from Wikipedia.

Jaulian is located on a hill 100 metres above the nearby modern village of Jaulian. The cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad are approximately 35 km and 45 km to the southeast, respectively and situated near Khanpur Taxila road; a picnic place near Khanpur Dam. Jaulian is located near the Mohra Muradu monastery, and the ancient Taxilan city of Sirsukh. Moreover, Piplan Remains, Badalpur Stupa and Jinnah Wali Dheri Stupa are nearby places. Jaulian was built in the 2nd-century CE – around the same time as the nearby Mohra Muradu Jaulian, along with the rest of Ancient Taxila, was devastated in the 450s CE during the invasion of the White Huns, and later abandoned. Subsequent rulers, such as the Hun King Mihirakula, persecuted the region's Buddhists, and the site never recovered.

Another great historical site around Taxila. Both the site itself as well as the undercover section full of old Buddhist sculptures. Note this is not in Punjab, so your ticket from Taxila does not cover entry, you will have to pay again, but worth it.

Nestled in the picturesque landscape of Pakistan, the Jaulian Buddhist Stupa & Monastery is a hidden gem that beckons to all seekers of serenity and history. Visiting this charming place was a journey into the heart of Buddhism's rich heritage, and it left an indelible mark on my soul. Upon arriving at Jaulian, I was immediately struck by the overwhelming sense of peace that enveloped the area. The tranquil ambiance and the timeless beauty of the surroundings made it clear that I was about to embark on a unique and spiritual journey. The site, dating back to the Gandhara period, stands as a testament to the deep-rooted historical significance of Buddhism in the region. The Jaulian Stupa, a magnificent structure, took my breath away. Its simple yet elegant design, surrounded by lush greenery, exudes an aura of tranquility. The stupa's existence is a silent homage to the ancient wisdom and devotion that once thrived here. As I walked around the stupa, I couldn't help but be awestruck by the intricate carvings and the aura of mysticism that lingers in the air. The Monastery at Jaulian is equally captivating. The well-preserved remains of this ancient learning center offer a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of Buddhist monks who resided here centuries ago. Exploring the dimly lit meditation cells, living quarters, and common areas, I felt like a time traveler, transported to a place where spiritual growth and intellectual pursuits were paramount. The centuries-old frescoes and inscriptions that adorn the monastery's walls are a testament to the artistry and dedication of the monks. One of the most remarkable aspects of the Jaulian Buddhist Stupa & Monastery is its panoramic view of the Taxila Valley. The site is perched on a hill, offering visitors a breathtaking vista of the surrounding landscape. I found myself lost in the beauty of the valley, as the wind gently rustled the leaves of the trees and the distant mountains painted a mesmerizing picture against the sky. It was a moment of pure connection with nature and history, a feeling that is difficult to put into words. As I roamed the grounds, I couldn't help but notice the serenity that seemed to permeate the air. The site's remote location has preserved its tranquility and allowed visitors to connect with their inner selves. It's a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and find solace in the simplicity and grandeur of the past. The Jaulian Buddhist Stupa & Monastery serves not only as a historical treasure but also as a sanctuary for inner reflection. It's a place where one can sit quietly, meditate, and experience a sense of unity with the universe. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a spiritual seeker, or simply a nature lover, Jaulian offers a profound experience that is not to be missed. In conclusion, my visit to the Jaulian Buddhist Stupa & Monastery was a journey of self-discovery, a pilgrimage through time, and a deep appreciation for the profound spiritual and historical significance of this site. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a peaceful retreat, a glimpse into the past, or a connection with the roots of Buddhism. Jaulian is a place that touches the heart and soul, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime.

I went to the site with my friend on bike from Islamabad. The ride is about roughly an hour long from Islamabad. The site doesn't disappoint and is a must view once at least. You'll connect with the past and it is a wholesome experience learning that there used to be a civilization here about 2000 years ago. Visit before sunset to enjoy the scenery and landscape and also for safety concerns. The stone walls you see are intact and are original that were built some 2000 years ago. This whole area was basically buried under a mound and was excavated around 1916 onwards. There's also a museum where most of the sculptures are showcased in a safe environment for exhibition. So make sure to visit that also ( museum closes at 4pm in winters)

Truly a remarkable place to visit if you are interested in ancient history. I'd recommend checking out all the sites in the area. Just be aware that most sites in Taxila have either a government sponsored or private tour guide available to walk you through. Going rate is between RP. 500-$1000 or 5-10 USD for the tour guide. Foreigner pay about the same for an entry ticket. we were also asked to show our passports in the parking lot.

Its 300 foot above the ground level. Staircase is available. There are 2 stops to normalize your breath frequency. When you reach over there an excellent guide is available who have all related information.
