The coolest destination in Gunma prefecture. There’s some good energy here. There’s many dining options, attractions, and photo opportunities available . If it’s not on your “bucket list”, it should be. Parking. There’s free parking and toilets close to the roadside station (zip-line/ski area) walking down is not difficult or long at all.

Kusatsu Yubatake is a true gem nestled in the heart of Japan's hot spring culture. The sight of the steaming hot spring waters flowing down the wooden channels creates an ethereal ambiance that transports you to a different time. The surrounding area is steeped in history, and the therapeutic properties of the waters are renowned. Walking along the Yubatake, witnessing the billowing steam, and feeling the warmth permeate the air is an experience that rejuvenates both body and soul. It's a must-visit for anyone seeking tranquility amidst nature's breathtaking beauty.

Really interesting area. We parked by the train station and walked over. I don’t see any parking nearby but the walk is easy and stroller friendly. This area has lots of souvenir shops as well as restaurants and street food. You can shop and eat to your hearts content! The area does have that unique sulphuric rotten egg smell but that lends more charm to the experience. Bring a little towel so you can soak your feet in the nearby foot baths.

I highly recommend visiting yubatake (and kusatsu) during the winter time. The snow creates such beautiful scenery to enjoy the area. Yubatake has many shops and restaurants surrounding it, there are also two foot baths to enjoy! You can buy a towel at a local 7/11 and soak your feet for a while as you enjoy the relaxing view. There is a long line of wooden boxes, the water runs through these, and ends with a small waterfall and pool. It's a fantastic blue/green color! I loved this area since it was the center of the town, and there was a lot of things to enjoy!

The most beautiful open onsen water area. The green colour of the sulphur is just spectacular! Amazing views, lovely place to walk around. There are free foot baths and taps where you can feel the warm onsen water. What a great experience.

The highlight of Kusatsu Onsen is Yubatake, especially at night all lit up! Literally meaning "Hot Water Field", Yubatake is the symbol of this hot spring town. It's literally in the centre of Kusatsu so every you go, you will definitely hear, smell and see this bubbling wonder!

The source is something to see at least once. The illuminations at night are beautiful and the smell of sulfur surprising. Ashiyu (foot bath) is freely available. Recommend to go and see Yumomi during the day, it is short and interesting. If the trip is not planned yet, best to book a Ryokan with meal included : the restaurants on site were not good.

One of the most cute towns si have seen. Visited in Feb 26, snow tires is required for sure. Gets dark soon and visibility is not good so do not recommend to drive too late if you go alone like me.

Nice area to walk around and breath the sulfuric steam coming from the running water. There are also a small foot bath and a large one as well.

Night colors are magical, has Michael Jackson's thriller vibes. The rising steam and emerald waters are pleasant to watch. Nearby foot baths are nice too.

Quite special place! Maybe best at winter? For sure need to book room far in advance if you want to stay for a night and enjoy local onsen, especially long holiday weekend.

Visited there during end of March this year, beautiful place. The steam from the natural hot spring warms you up from the cold early spring chills. The onsen manju and onsen tamago are a must try if you visit here

Memorable place to visit with great old town scenery. Only one thing is the place must go down from the hell with slope. To come here by public transportation with a large luggage is not recommended. Need to connect different way of public transportation to reach here.

Absolutely amazing. Sure, it's touristy and rather crowded during peak season and hours but you should still go. The smell of the air, the black lights at night, the wonderful food and welcoming people all make for a great time. DON'T take the main roads to get around (unless you're shopping) because there are some pretty cool hidden gems in the little narrow pathways. Truly a must-stop place while in Gunma!

It was amazing and once-in-a-lifetime memory that a traditional way of cooling a hot spring could be this much gorgeous even if it built hundreads of years ago. I think most great moment is morning. Just after sunrise, hot spring's steam will fly to sun and you can enjoy warm foot bath with great scenery.

A must-see when visiting Kusatsu Onsen. Once you get past the somewhat overwhelming at first sulfuric aromas which summon images of 1000 rotten boiled eggs fermenting over the course of 100 years, the clouds of steam rising from pools and views of the natural hot springs are incredible. Especially beautiful in the evening and at night once crowds have dissipated, the hidden gems dotted around the surrounding alleyways and streets are what make this place so special - Cafés, restaurants, shops, stalls and other smaller attractions provide so much more to explore. The attached foot onsen was a fun added bonus!

A visit to Yubatake in Kusatsu is truly a captivating experience. The sight of Yubatake, with its wooden structures and the flowing hot spring water, is simply gorgeous in person. The visual appeal is heightened by the surrounding natural beauty, making it a picturesque spot that captures the essence of Kusatsu's charm.

Mesmerising place. Bit crowded. There are lot of snack shops around this. Difficult to find a parking spot. Narrow roads in the area, so you have to park the vehicle and walk of you want to check the place and do some shopping.

A local touristy town with the key feature in the town center. Surrounding are some big onzen hotels. You can take the round bus at 100yen at the bus terminal at Chuo Dori around the town.

This open plaza and the yubatake are centrally located in Kusatsu. There are restaurants, souvenir shops, and even the Yumomi Show building surrounding it. It is beautiful during the day and night, with illuminations during the latter. The foot bath next to it is a great place to stop and take a rest too.

impressed by the size of the hot spring. love the idea of being able to dip your feet on the side. I came in the winter and it's very lively. the smell of sulfur just makes this place so unique. I'm glad I made thjs trip here and would recommend anyone coming here to see it and go to the public bathhouse to bathe in the hot springs.

This is the main focal point and square of Kusatsu as an onsen town. A picturesque and very well maintained town that boasts some of the best onsens in Japan. The strong smell of sulphur coming from the thermal source reminds me of eggs and farts . It can get quite overwhelming but it’s comes with the territory. The thermal fields is something quite unique to this area. The minerals of the water leave a milky greenish sediment that coats all the rocks over time. It’s equally as beautiful and enchanting during the day and at night. Definitely worth the look around.

It is an interesting place to visit. There is a free foot bath. It lights up in the evening. You can take the stair up to the temple for a nice view.

Beautiful place to visit during autumn. The leaves are changing colour coupled with the town's old and quaint shops. Nice and cool weather for a stroll along the hotspring. Nice in the spring too. Nothing changed.

Very pretty! This is the center and symbol of Kusatsu Onsen. Must check out the view during the day and at night.

Excepting the smell of onsen water vapour everything is fabulous. If you are planning to visit once then it will be better if you choose winter time and off course not only day trip. No-onewant to miss the evening view and midnight IZAKAYA.

Really lovely place with a nice atmosphere, lots of amenities and souvenir shops. Definitely worth a visit to try the onsens here. It gets cold in winter here so bring a warm coat! Also I suggest bringing easy to take off shoes and a small towel as there are loads of foot baths here.
