Had a memorable experience. The luxury of staying in a small hotel really hit home - friendly staff, intimate atmosphere, personalized service, attention to detail. The balcony room was spacious with a great view and well thought out rooms with beautiful artwork. The lobby had good ambience and the gardens were amazing!! There were a lot of them for a hotel with just 19 rooms! A zen garden in the lobby that tells a story, a forest-like one on the roof and a great place to relax and pocket gardens in each room. One of the best and most beautiful things I liked were the bonsai lamps that they call "space colonies". Just fantastic! Plenty of interesting design features, with a story behind everything. I was able to have a taste of Kyoto culture and creativity even before stepping outside the hotel. A great place to stay that is in a great area not too far from the many places to see in Kyoto. Loved it!

This property was just amazing. So we’ll thought out with so many great design features. To be able to sit up on the rooftop garden and enjoy a beautiful breakfast was just the best way to start the morning. Rooms are spacious and well laid out. By far the best property I have stayed in Japan. The team at Genji show great hospitality and go above and beyond to make the stay memorable. Can’t wait till my next visit to Kyoto

I had a great, short stay. This was the best service I have ever received from a hotel in all my travels. Very personable and caring. I left my laundry overnight after falling asleep and when I went downstairs it was folded. I felt very bad that someone had to fold my laundry but when I went down to thank the gentleman I could see he genuinely just enjoyed making others happy. Rooms are very unique with traditional Ryokan style mats built into the floors and comfortable beds. Staff treated me life family from the moment I walked in to the moment I left and I look forward to returning on my next trip to Kyoto. A few notes that don’t take away from how good the hotel is but are important to keep in mind : 1. It is hard to darken the rooms that have lots of windows. 2. All the very high end materials in the room seemed to upset my allergies a little. If you are sensitive just take a Claritin beforehand. 3. It was cool out but it’s hard to keep the room cold (This only applies to us Americans who like to freeze ourself to sleep). This is a GREAT place to stay!! Highly recommend!

Stayed there for my wife’s birthday! Wonderful experience! Rooms, garden, rooftop everything was astonishing . And the details of the architecture… AMAZING! My wife still talks about how good the burgers we had on the rooftop was. Later we find out the buns are made there fresh! I really enjoyed their meze plate! Over all I would definitely go back again and will tell all my friends to stay there if they ever come to Kyoto!!!

We recently had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Genji in Kyoto, Japan and were thoroughly impressed with the level of customer service provided. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. One small but thoughtful touch was the provision of hot hand warmers as we left for a day of sightseeing which was much appreciated during the chilly winter weather. Additionally, they offered us free umbrellas after we checked out which was a great help as it was raining heavily. The staff even went the extra mile by walking with our suitcase to wait for the cab in the rain, which made our departure much more pleasant. Overall, the Hotel Genji exceeded my expectations and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable and very clean and welcoming stay in Kyoto.

I recently had the pleasure of staying at Genji Kyoto, and I must say, it exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I stepped into the hotel, I was captivated by its nice, modern minimal interior and stylish layouts, creating an ambiance of sophistication and tranquility. One of the highlights of my stay was the breathtaking view of Kyoto from the hotel's rooftop. It provided a mesmerizing panorama of the city, allowing me to immerse myself in the beauty of Kyoto's landscapes. Whether it was during the day or at night, the view was simply astonishing. Being a Muslim traveler, finding halal food options can sometimes be a challenge. However, Genji Kyoto went above and beyond to accommodate my dietary needs. The executive chef, Murat, is a highly skilled culinary expert who personally greets visitors and takes care of their dining experience. Upon informing him of our preferences, he ensured that all the dishes he prepared for us were halal, including the delicious steak sourced from Kobe. The attention to detail and the flavors that Murat brought to our table were truly remarkable. The location of Genji Kyoto is another aspect that impressed me. It is conveniently situated close to the activities area and within walking distance of the train station. This made it incredibly easy for me to explore Kyoto's attractions and access public transportation, saving valuable time during my stay. The hotel's strategic positioning allowed me to seamlessly navigate the city, making my experience even more enjoyable. The staff at Genji Kyoto deserve special mention for their exceptional service. From the moment I checked in until my departure, they were incredibly friendly, attentive, and always ready to assist. Their warmth and genuine care made me feel welcome and ensured that every aspect of my stay was catered to with utmost professionalism. The dedication of the staff truly sets Genji Kyoto apart.

Gorgeous boutique hotel with a rooftop garden overlooking the river. A really special place. The location is on a quiet side street besides the river, 15 minutes walking to Kyoto Station and walking distance to many attractions and restaurants. Practical touches include free self-service laundry and free bicycles for rent. Kyoto is a great city for cycling and we got around everywhere on bicycles. Food: while there isn't a full-service restaurant here, there are Japanese and Western choices for breakfast, and you can choose to be served breakfast in your room, the lobby lounge, or the rooftop garden. There's also a small room service menu. A lot of thought has gone into every detail of this hotel with spacious rooms, soaking tubs in every room, luxury linens, and custom artwork inspired by a classic Japanese story, the Tale of Genji. Very friendly and accommodating staff, willing to help make reservations, taxi bookings, and make custom recommendations. I stayed with kids, and even though this is more of an adult-oriented hotel they were exceptionally welcoming to the little ones.

The Genji Kyoto staff and hotel facilities were such a wonderful find. We were greeted warmly by staff at the door and were treated like family our entire stay. The hotel is fairly new and so clean and beautifully appointed. The hotel has superbly blended modern luxury amenities with the beauty and elegance of the old world charm that surrounds it. The staff went out of their way to tend to our every need from recommendations to directions to just fun conversations. I would recommend this hotel highly for a once in a lifetime sophisticated Japanese experience.

Stayed at the hotel for 2 nights at the River Superior room (501) as part of birthday trip with my girlfriend. Everything with this hotel is perfect, spotless. The staffs there went above and beyond my expectations to help me order a birthday cake, helped me source flowers and entertained lots of my requests including making restaurant reservation for some hidden Kaisheiki place. Can’t appreciate enough how helpful they are! All staffs speaks very fluent English as well. The breakfast - make sure u choose the Japanese set, and have it on the rooftop garden if weather permits. Taste amazing as well. They have joined Design Hotel chain (Marriott) just few months ago so it is not so “Marriott-ised”, which is also why i found them. I really hope that in long run they can keep up their own standard and keep their brand personality - so you know that their training and services is not only up to international standard, but also not losing what makes Genji Kyoto special. Long comment short, I will 100% stay there again, look forward to our next stay with them!

It is a beautifully designed space. Everything feels premium with lots of beautiful items around the room and the hotel. We got a room facing the river and it was a real treat to wake up to the view every day. The service was impeccable and the team took great care of us. The breakfast was delicious. There are a couple of washing machines for shared use, which was helpful. Location is pretty central, there is a subway close by and the train station is a short cab ride away. It is in a small street though, so bring along the map that the hotel provides to give the drivers direction to the hotel. We really enjoyed the hotel and highly recommend it.

Everything and everyone at the Genji Kyoto Hotel was fantastic. From the moment the entry door was opened for us to our goodbye as they wait with us for our train station taxi to arrive. The rooms are gorgeous. The attention to detail is inspiring. The staff could not have been nicer or more accommodating. They gave us hand warmers as we left for our walking tour! The food at the hotel was a nice surprise. Delicious breakfast (recommend going with the breakfast inclusive rate - it’s really good!) and the evening fare was delicious, as well. 10/10!

Genji Kyoto is a hidden gem nestled amongst a quaint neighborhood next to a river. It is obvious that a lot of thought has been put into the design of this boutique hotel. This level of attention, down to the smallest details, is rarely found anywhere. The moment you walk through the bamboo lined walkway into the stylish lobby, you know this is a special place. The lobby itself is not a big space, but the decor, the garden, the bar and sitting area all come together to create a very harmonious space. We were welcomed with a glass of champagne and treat while they check us in, which was a very nice touch. The staff members were all very friendly and helpful. We had contacted the hotel prior to arrival to get some dinner reservations made. Koko answered all my questions patiently and promptly via email. She was very helpful and made the arrangements for us. We arrived at the hotel close to 8pm and asked the check-in staff for a suggestion for a quick bite nearby. I'm sorry I didn't ask for his name so I can't give him a shout out here, but he gave us some suggestions, and when we selected yakiniku, he quickly made a reservation for us. It was a short walk from the hotel and we were blown away at how good the food was. Honestly, we didn't expect much at this late hour in this relatively quiet neighborhood. We also had a mishap with our luggage, Leila at the front desk was there to help us until we got it sorted out. Each day when we leave and come back to the hotel, we were greeted by the staff. We have two rooms. One for our 3 kids which was quite spacious. We have a room with a river view, which is smaller, but the space was so efficiently used, it felt roomy. I will let you look through their website to see what the rooms look like, but they were so tastefully done. It's a great combination of modern comfort, sleek artistic design, but with a Japanese flair. There were nicely packaged coffee and tea in the room that would be replenished each day. You will find slippers and robes in the closet. The bathroom floors are heated and there is a good size tub and shower. The toiletry is good quality and they even provide bath salts. Of course, you will also find a Japanese style bidet toilet with a wall mounted remote control. I've stayed at 5 star hotels, but have never had a dyson hairdryer in my room before. The rooftop garden is such a nice space and we enjoyed some coffee up there one morning. The entire place is squeaky clean. While I know this is a new establishment, I have no doubt they will keep it nicely maintained. The only drawback I can say is that it is a bit of a walk to the train station. If you walk fast, it will take about 15 minutes. At a more leisurely pace, it will take you 20+ minutes. We didn't mind it because we like getting our steps in so we can exercise and feel a little less guilty when we indulge in all the good food Kyoto has to offer. Also, because it is located in a quieter part of town with narrow streets, some taxi drivers will not drive you up to the hotel, but drop you off within a short walk, which wasn't a problem for us. Overall, I would say Genji Kyoto exceeded my expectations in all areas. I will gladly stay here again the next time I'm in town. Thank you for making our visit to Kyoto such a pleasant one.

Amazing hotel and super helpful staff. Love the rooftop garden. We stayed in both river suite and river superior rooms. Both are exquisite. Will come back next time we are in Kyoto.

Genji Kyoto is a fantastic boutique hotel which we cannot recommend enough. It is conveniently located less than 10min from Kyoto Station, via multiple bus routes. The facilities are new, modern and clean, with useful amenities such as a laundry room available free of charge for guests. The rooftop terrace garden, with its outstanding view overlooking Kamo River, all the way to the Higashiyama district, is a romantic setting for breakfast or a nightcap. The main highlight of our stay at Genji, however, was the staff, who were generous and warm. We felt so welcome from the minute we arrived to the moment we departed, and were impressed by the attentive and thoughtful touches throughout our stay, such as providing hand warmers on particularly chilly mornings. We were sad to leave this wonderfully charming and beautiful hotel, but will be sure to return on our next visit to Kyoto.

Genji Kyoto was possibly the best hotel I have ever had the pleasure of staying at. From the second we walked in the staff were incredible. Eli was the best. She helped us get checked in and it was always a please to see her. The hotel itself is beautiful. The rooms are amazingly curated, and the beds are extremely comfortable. The rooftop garden and view is a great place to hang out at, have a delicious cocktail from the bar, or eat some food. The hotel was next to the river in a quieter part of Kyoto which we really loved. It was still very close walking distance to the main busy tourist area. This hotel was amazing but it was the staff who made this place extra special. Every person we encountered, including the general manger, were exceptionally nice and helpful. I appreciated every second of interaction I had with each staff member. Exceptional is an understatement for this hotel and I will stay here every time I come to Kyoto. Thanks again from the bottom of our hearts! Sending a million thank you’s from Canada!

We stayed here for 5 nights and loved this hotel! The rooms were very tastefully decorated and the views were amazing. We loved sitting on the balcony in the evenings. The staff are also super helpful and friendly- they helped make us dinner reservations and book our transport back to the train station. Also gave us umbrellas and cold waters to make sure we were well prepared for the rainy/hot days. We will definitely come back!

We had a perfect stay. Beautiful and tastefully designed rooms that blend Japanese and international style. Quiet nice neighborhood by the river. Very warm and friendly staff, with better English than many Kyoto hotels. Convenient location. Great breakfast, both Japanese and Western (try the Japanese, the grilled fish is worth it). Can’t wait to come back for our next visit.

This hotel is the hotel with the best service that we ever received. The setting is amazing on the river (The rooftop is opened to everyone and you can have breakfast their), very quite and unique neighbourhood but very close to the main entertainment and food quarter (walking distance). The room is fantastic, and the details in which every item was chosen is nothing but genius. Again, the service level from the receptionists to the cook (wonderful). Special thanks to Mao, who helped us a lot. A real experience. Do not miss!

Stayed here in January while on holiday, and is great for western tourists. Great rooms, wonderful views of Kyoto and located in a lovely spot. All-round beautiful spot, really welcoming and friendly staff, and a nice variety of meals and drinks in the restaurant area at the entrance. Great place to stay!

This is a MUST stay hotel in Kyoto. I had traveled to many places in Asia, Europe, North America and Latin America, and Genji Kyoto is by far the most impressive one of all. It’s like an oasis of “home away from home”, all the staff were so attentive, caring and will go an extra mile to make the stay an enjoyable one : I had craving for cooked vegetables and the Chef was kind enough to prepare “made to order” dish for me and it was so delicious. The guests host offered great recommendations for sightseeing, dining, transportation and will make all the necessary arrangements - feel so pampered🥰; Koko San at the hotel was patiently showing me how to get to places with great details to ensure I don’t get lost, how incredible is such service. If you have any special requests, Mao San is the person who will make it happen. Now, the hardware of the hotel: this boutique hotel is designed with such great detail. The minute you walk in, you feel so relaxed already and the atmosphere is so tranquil & calming. The decor is impeccable with great taste (to my taste for sure) and you can sense great care has been given to ensure guests will be most comfortable while staying here…I certainly am entice to stay longer. Truly grateful that my travel agent recommended this amazing hotel to me. Every penny well spent!

I recently visited here and I must say I love the interior design, friendliness of staff, cleanliness of hotel and of course the food. I visited here with my family and we were very well welcomed by the staff. It has a very nice rooftop where you can dine-in or just simply grabbing your drink and enjoying beautiful Kyoto city view. Another thing that surprised us was, halal food availability. As a Muslim, we did not have much options available in the city so finding he hotel serving halal food for its guests, made us happy. Thanks to Chef Murat, he really personally dealt with us to make sure we were well being taken care of. I will definitely recommend this place to my friends and will visit here again.

My wife and I stayed at Genji for 5 nights in June 2023. It was definitely one of the highlights of our travel. Everything was perfect. The level of service, of accommodation, has been the best among all the hotels we stayed at. Special thanks to all the staff, they always had small attentions, and really seemed to care about our well-being and our trip. I would very happily go to Genji again, and I recommend it highly.

Genji hotel was one of the highlights of our Japan trip. The staff made us feel warm and welcome from the beginning. They went above and beyond with their hospitality and made sure everything was arranged down to detail. They even helped us with our planning and had the best tips for food and shrines! The rooftop garden has a beautiful view and is the perfect place to enjoy a drink. The interior had modern yet a traditional character, with nature elements. The rooms are neat, clean and calm. Plus points are the electric curtains, heated bathroom floor and the comfortable bed. The Japanese breakfast was well balanced and delicious. We loved using the bikes and exploring Kyoto. Thanks to the entire Genji team! Greetings Flora

Excellent hotel with amazing staff located half way between the station and busy shopping areas of Kyoto. Rooms are spacious with luxurious shower rooms (including a decent sized bath) and comfortable beds. Many rooms overlook the river and include a small living area. The staff are outstanding. Super helpful and informative. There is a free to use laundry and new bicycles on site too. Great say for a short break.

This is a true gem in Kyoto. Waking up to the serenity view of kamo river and a panorama view of the mountains. We love the design of the room, every little detail is thoughtful and elegant. It is a retreat away from the crowds but easy walking to the city center. Didn't have breakfast during our 4 day stay because there are many options around and we want to explore this neighborhood.

Easily the nicest hotel I've ever stayed in. Aesthetics are incredible. Clearly it was designed with a lot of thought and care. The breakfast was solid. Service excellent and we need to highlight Eri in particular for her excellent enthusiasm which made our stay!

Everything was perfect. Many thanks to the team who created and who managed this hotel. The staff is really kind and helpful, the room and the overall building is nicely decorated in a modern Japanese style. We will come back.

Fantastic boutique hotel. The staff was extraordinary, went out of their way to help. The rooms are small but comfortable and the location is great, close to Nishiki market. The Japanese breakfast was very good too.

Genji Kyoto was one of the top highlights of our 2-week vacation to Japan. The entire staff is an absolute pleasure to interact with and are very helpful. We found that the staff routinely goes above and beyond with their hospitality. The design throughout this gorgeous, sleek and modern hotel encapsulates the Genji story, and the intention was impossible not to appreciate, from the outdoor sky garden to the stylish and comfortable rooms. My husband and I found ourselves renting the bicycles almost every day, and this was a perfect way to explore Kyoto. The Japanese style breakfast was delicious and delightful. The hotel even hosted a free sake tasting, which ended up being one of the most fun social events of the whole trip! Thank you to the entire Genji team, you all are amazing at your jobs and we hope to visit Genji and Kyoto soon!
