Well, this is a touristy market for sure but it is worth visiting for the vibe and the food. Some of the foods are truly legit. My all-time favorite is the tofu shop where they made tofu donut and tofu soft serve. Such a light yet pleasant sensation from both sweets. The food stalls selling seafood look amazing too.

This is a very interesting market. Run mainly by mum and pa shops, family owned business. They sell fresh seafood and a lot of other produces. From dried fish to preserved vegetables and street food and other delicious stuffs. The pricing are cheap. So it is worth to go there. However, similar stuffs can also be found in Kyoto's local super market if you know where to go to find, and it can be cheaper.

Definitely worth spending an hour wandering through the food hall. Prices are fairly reasonable for prepared foods, maybe 10% increase for things like fresh produce and seafood. I priced peaches, oysters and bitter melon out of curiosity compared to the local supermarket. ** Skip the restaurants and try small skewers of various delicious things as you wander along. I had 2 crab legs as big as my hand for about ¥700 ($4.75 USD). You will have dozens of stalls to choose from. The food hall is several blocks in length. Easy way to navigate is to look at the glass ceiling in the halls. White glass is shopping. Red and orange stained glass is food. The general shopping hall had mostly overpriced tourist shops mixed in with a few genuinely interesting resale shops and specialty stores. Several arcades as well.

A must go to visit if you're in Kyoto. It's only about a 20 minute walk from Kyoto station or a quick 5 minute taxi ride. It's a large, open market that is multiple blocks long as probably has over 100 vendors. You'll see everything sold from fresh seafood, grilled seafood, soft serve, fresh vegetables, decorative items, alcohol, etc... It's fun just walking around and buying a little bit of everything. Just pace yourself as there's so many good food vendors you'll want to try.

Good food, the prices are relatively decent (compared to other markets). I had the chance to try many things, from skewers to tempura, from honey-based drinks to mochi desserts. I recommend people to go there. Also, the samurai and ninja museum is located inside. I also recommend. It's a nice experience. Book on their website and in advance for a discounted price.

Very long street market. There are variety of food and dessert. We all enjoy tofu donut and tofu ice cream. The price consider high if compares with other local market. There are lots of tourists. From this market, the visitor can walk all the way to kamo river or shopping streets near by. There are so many sightseeing around.

An absolute must if you’re in the area. So many great shops and foods. The grilled scallops with soy sauce and butter were exquisite. The salmon sushi was excellent. Make sure to take home a bottle of sake or at least sample it for 100 yen. There is a bakery that had a match macadamia nut cookie that I loved. We had so much fun we went back for lunch again the next day.

Great market that isn’t as busy as Osaka and Tokyo’s equivalent. Had Kobe beef skewers here for the first time and that was great. We tried so much different food and everything was great and fresh. Some stores do seem like tourist trap and overpriced, but overall it had a way more relaxed atmosphere and it’s easier to just stop and try things. Definitely worth a visit.

Crowded and buddy! Better closer to closing (~4:30 to 5pm - yes most steals are starting to close around 4:30 or have sold out signs. There are some outliers that stay open longer.) Overall very good experience. Lists of fun things. We tried two different crepe stores. Both very good. Taiyaki was good and there are multiple stalls for it. Restraints get packed quickly and lines go into the walkways. It is a very long market and goes into a mall-like space. Lots of fun and interesting things to see. Multiple temples and historical information. Overall a must see! Nice light day of culture. We went on two different days and still didn't cover it all.

One of the largest open food markets in Kyoto, packed with crowds at all times. You'll find yourself squeezing through each of the stalls. Food is moderately priced and you'll need to queue for their food. Remember to finish up your food before getting going , as walking while eating is not allowed. A variety of food can be found.

If you want to try some local food made by local stores rather than big chains, then this is not a bad choice for a place to visit. However, there are also countless big brand stores if you want to do more regular shopping, or you can visit the local Kura-Sushi, for example. In general, there are countless options in terms of restaurants and various stores with more than just food. The place itself is also rather spectacular. Just beware of huge, dense crowds of tourists, which tend to form here and can be very hard to move through.

Run, don't walk to this market. An incredible number of shops and restaurants. But the best part is the stalls of vendors a mile long of amazing food. It's a chance to find those incredible souvenirs and grab a grilled squid on a stick. Just one of the highlights of this wonderful city. And EVERYONE of the many vendors I interacted with were all so friendly and helpful.

One of the best markets in Kyoto, you can wander for quite some time here checking amazing restaurants and eateries, souvenir shops and so many more. Depending of the time of the day it can get quite crowded but being so large it is still fun to explore. The prices are typical, not higher and actually some lower compared to similar markets. Here we could try a Michelin supervised restaurant for very decent price, chicken and gyoza (fried dumplings) combo for 10.000 yen, indeed amazingly delicious. If you are a foodie, this would be street food Heaven with plenty of choices like beef, fresh seafood and produce, Japanese style sweets and so on. The market being close to downtown Kyoto makes it very easy to access.

This place is packed with tourists. There are wide selection of street food, pickles, dried food as well as few souvenirs shops. Good experience but don’t need to spend too much time. Don’t eat and walk. Go to a corner and complete your food. The giant crab legs is quite unique and worth a try.

Utter foodie heaven! I was so full after leaving this market, not to mention I came back to the hotel and completely filled up my suitcase with all the snacks, sweets and pickles sold here. I love that many places offer tastings so you know what you're buying.

Many good foods and shopping. Best visited before noon. Some live seafood stalls close early. The most memorable food tried was the beef skewers at the “Beef and Wine Restaurant”. No idea if this is literally the shop name or just a sign to say what it does. Whilst the beef skewers we had wasn’t Wagyu, it was absolutely delicious. Chances are, it’s also the skill of the chef. We liked it so much, we went back for second helping. Each skewer costs 972Yen

Probably our TOP market! Bring cash and take your time walking one side and when you’ve reached the end, turn around and check out the other side! Go early, it can get crowded but stop and try everything! The seafood is fresh, food is delicious, and a wonderful variety of stalls. Some items we got were Kobe beef skewers, uni, oysters, fried crab stick, peach icecream, etc. everything was amazing. You can eat and shop, come hungry!

This place is huge! We visited on a Sunday afternoon, and it was packed. So crowded that it is difficult to walk. We enjoyed selecting different seafood from the stalls and eating it fresh. We tried eel, squid, and shrimp. There are lots of stores for shopping.

Amazing food, fantastic shops if your looking to buy cubs, plates, mugs, household items, ornament to remember your trip, and Japanese kitchen knives, which look amazing! Very busy! I went at 3pm, which was not ideal. Best to attend early in the morning or later in the afternoon. If you like to take lots of photos of the great food you’ve bough, this is a great place for you. And the food is really good. Very much comment the baby octopus stuffed with a soft boiled quail’s egg. And the scallops on a stick are fantastic!

(Translated by Google) There were many parking lots nearby and it was convenient. Take a walk around Nishiki Market with a navigation system. The town name is also interesting around here. Just looking at the map of Uoyamachi, Yaoyamachi, Kaiyamachi, etc. is exciting! The narrow alleys where people are worried about passing each other are dim and nostalgic shopping streets. There was a place where the shutter was closed, but it was cheerful and lively. Meat, fish, and so on ... At the liquor store, delicious side dishes are lined up, and you can stand in the back and drink, and the world view that you get lost in is so wonderful that you can feel like you are traveling abroad as soon as you walk. Unfortunately, the takoyaki restaurant I wanted to go to was closed, but I enjoyed it enough. I wish there was such a shopping street in my hometown ... There are few people from overseas and from all over the country due to the corona virus, so we were lucky to have a leisurely walk and enjoyed it for the first time, but I also run a restaurant. I think that everyone who works at these tourist spots is really worried. I definitely want to stop by when I come to Kyoto. Please do your best.

There’s just so much to see and sample in Nishiki Market. Everywhere you turn there’s something delicious. We had a tamago sandwich that was made in a shop that sold mainly eggs and the sandwiches, it was amazing. The market is kept clean and although it is a tourist spot, when you go early in the morning it’s a really nice experience. You can buy anything from coffee to sushi. This place has got it all!>?

Lots of delicious seafood and nice titbits to purchase. If you love fresh seafood this is place to go to in Kyoto. Most of the shops have really small spaces so it’s difficult to find seats. Can get really crowded during the weekends so it is best to go early and avoid the peak hours. Otherwise you will need to eat while you stand or walk. But this is a really great market. Highly recommended.

Hours of entertainment, eating and shopping all within the several blocks of the marketplace. Unique food must be tried. So many things to buy. Just a fantastic place to walk through. Had a great stroll through the market and picked up some lunch and snacks on the way to the Samurai & Ninja Museum. The souvenirs may be overpriced a bit for tourist but if you don’t really have time to hunt for the cheapest places, can pick up some items here. Had awesome tempura & sushi for lunch, honeycomb ice cream and some of the smoothest mochis ever. Great place to bring the family.

The central market of Kyoto is a paradise of street food and local products. Hundreds of little shops next to each other, smiling owners happy to server their product and millions of aromas! Don’t lose the chance to wonder around and taste the deep fried oysters, the Japanese pancakes and the wasabi peanuts! The market is located within the center and you can continue your shopping on the nearby streets with more fashionable shops and store departments!

This is a tourist must! My family spent hours walking up and down the market going in every shop trying most foods and just absorbing this lively market. The shop owners were very kind and happy to help. We went for lunch and there was no shortage of food, but you could definitely find restaurants in this area for dinner too. Bring Yen because most of the places don't take card.

We visited at around 5pm (closes at 6) on a Friday evening; it was quite busy but not too bad. A good selection of nice food stalls at reasonable prices. The octopus & quail egg seems to be a local speciality... an acquired taste, maybe?

A huge bustling market selling different seafood, and authentic Japanese sushi, skewers and tempura. There are also a lot of specialty shops like snoopy shop and matcha house, and there is a wide variety of collection. However, I don’t find the food particularly nice, and the prices are quite high which makes it feel a little like a tourist trap. My dad bought two tempura for 1200¥, which was quite steep. I would recommend coming here to take a look but don’t spend too much money here!!

This place is a tourist trap filled with shops to attract tourists and their money. There are a lot of stalls falsely advertising crab meat on skewers but they are actually selling crabsticks, which are imitation crab meat. Most of the food items, beer and souvenirs sold here are overpriced. But the place is still worth a visit for its lively atmosphere and diverse food options.

Cool place to stroll around and taste some great food. There are overrated places but some hidden gems. I found a truck where there wasn't a queue, and that was suspicious, I thought at first it wasn't that good, but I got the best wagyu skewer! Prices can be high somewhere since it's a popular tourist attraction, but you can leave with a full stomach if you take a couple of things, spending a fair amount of money.

It’s good to go just for the experience. The majority of the vendors have the prices posted for everyone. You aren’t allowed to walk and eat, so you are crammed into a tiny space, but it’s all good. The food is okay, nothing mind blowing. My favs were the shrimp tempura and the spicy chicken, it wasn’t spicy though 😂. My least fav were the octopus balls - they were mushy and not in a good way, but people seem to enjoy them. The shrimp tempura was light, crispy, and flavorful. So just be ready for crowds and be open to experiences!

Market sold a lot of pickles. Felt less touristy compared to the Kumoron market in Osaka. Worth a walk through. There is a store selling roasted chestnuts and dried fruits. That was yum. They even give black bean tea to get you to go into their shop. Took me 2 hours from one end to the other through lots of food tastings. Had the soybean cream croquette. Worth a try!

(Translated by Google) Fantastic and beautiful! Admission is ¥ 500, and you can enter for free under kindergarten. In some places, such as places made according to the theme, trees become Japanese-style patterns by projection mapping, and rivers and ponds are fantastic with water mist applied, and the deer figurines are cute and can be enjoyed enough. However, as others have said, measures against cold are essential. The distance itself is short, but worth the price. There was a real deer scattered around the entrance, it was Nara-like, and it was a short but healing space. There were few foreigners because the time was right, so there was also a disinfectant. (Trip was made back then on 30 Nov 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit) Our first stop was Nishikori Market Shopping Street upon reaching Kyoto in the early morning 2 years ago on this very day. The market caters to both locals and tourists, offering a wide variety of goods for sale, ranging from street food snacks, to merchandise and eateries, as well as fresh seafood and preserved vegetables. There were so many choices but we decided to only try a few and save room for lunch. The street food snacks ranged from decent to tasty, but nothing was really an attention grabber. During pre-Covid-19 times, manoeuvring down the street proved to be challenging due to the large crowd of people being crammed into a narrow street. It’s an interesting place to visit as a first timer but Kyoto has many more interesting attractions and Nishiki lacks the attractiveness to entice us to revisit anytime soon.

Nishiki market is a great choice when you plan your trip to Kyoto. By visiting the Nishiki market, tourist will be able to get the idea and to understand the local flavour and culture of Japanese. On the other hand, the market has good varieties of locally produced dried foods and it is definitely a great place to shop for food souvenirs! Nishiki Market is very clean and the products are neatly arranged. Most of the products sold are locally produced and the market offers very fresh seafood. Visitors could easily spend an hour or more at Nishiki Market that has more than one hundred shops and restaurants. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the market and the sellers were very friendly and approachable.

It’s more like a tourists spot than for real local market. Anyway I love this cleanliness and the vibes of “The city bakery & coffee shop” in the morning most recommend! You could find lot of tourists thing here instead of just fresh fish likes Matcha, chopsticks, flowers, local fruits, etc. Quite a long straight walk through than you will end up with Kyoto biggest shopping area start with ABC shoes shop on you right.

AMAZING! Every food we tried was incredible - tasty, fresh, unique. All the vendors were very friendly, spoke enough English to transact. Bring cash, but some vendors accept credit card now too. It was sort of hard to find at first, but it’s basically an indoor alleyway that crosses about 4-5 perpendicular streets, and you can enter into the market at any of these cross streets, so you really can’t miss it.

Great food market and a must visit for anyone coming to Kyoto. The variety and quality of seafood here is amazing. Most stores do close around 4-5pm so it's only really for lunch. And there is no walking and eating. It is a rule here that you need to stand and eat and finding a place to stand can be challenging as most stores don't have much space to eat at.

The sale of fish started in the area around 782, thanks to available cold groundwater, that kept meats fresh. In 1615 the place officially received official permission to conduct the sale of fish, being this the first step for becoming a renowned market it is today. In 1883 due to the strong competition between establishments the number of shops was reduced to only 7. The market saw a renewed vitality in 1911 after new association promotion of the marketplace. It decreased again when the Central Wholesale Market of Kyoto was opened in 1927 and some stores moved there. In 1928, a new association promoted the opening of shops offering fruits, vegetables, meats and other food products. The market began to be known as “Kyoto’s kitchen”. The cobblestone floor was installed in 1984 and arcade canopy added in 1993. In the year 2005 “Nishiki Market” was registered as a trademark. The place became very popular with tourists and it is almost always very crowded. There are many shops where one may try different types of local food (specially seafood), but the amount, quality and prices reflect that this is a place for tourists. One may eat cheaper and better someplace else.

This place surprise me in all the aspects, is a nice place to taste street Japanese food and sake. There are a lot of stores with many souvenirs and you can buy a kimono at 1 yen/g. In addition, there is a museum of ninjas and samurais, I didn't see this attraction because I didn't buy the tickets in advance.

This Market is the place to go if you're looking for a wide variety of affordable street food to find! While crowded, especially in the evening, everything is quickly accessible and the food comes out relatively fast. Most everything on the menus is written in English for foreigners, and there is lots of seating available, since it is preferred for customers to not walk and eat at the same time! The food is unique, too, from beef sushi to a quail egg wrapped in an octopus, it's all delicious and fun to try!

Very cool spot for traditional Japanese shopping. I loved the shrimp tempura here and many spots with sweets and other different options. There is even a Mexican taco stand at the beginning before you enter that is a must try. They were delicious! Go early. Places start closing around 5 here.

A definite must visit when in Kyoto. Don't let the crowds turn you off, there are lots of hidden gems to be found here. It is a great place to get your tummy full with street food and drinks. There are a lot of options from savory to sweet, cheap to expensive. There is also a section of the market for trinkets and souvenirs.

One of the coolest places I went on my trip. The people watching to really cool and if was a nice change of pace to the other stuff I'd been doing. Definitely worth it to check it out. I recommend you be a little adventurous and buy or eat something you normally wouldn't.

Very enjoyable Market experience with too much to see in one visit. TIPS: If buying food, do not eat and walk. Many places are cash only, bring a coin purse for yen. It will be PACKED, be courteous about not blocking the path of movement.

Loved it! The food is AMAZING and not expensive at all! Super yummy! You can also find non-food related shops, but it’s mainly food. I’m still amazed about how affordable it was! (Also, it’s August now, and it was less hot then outside, not the usual air conditioning freezer, but not even as bad as outside)

If you’re looking for snacks and some decent finger food then this is the place to go in Kyoto. Not only popular with tourists but it’s popular with locals too. They have all the snacks and Japanese food you could ask for. Plus you can buy fruits, fish, meat for cheap.

This wasn't really a bustling and chaotic market, but more structured, with designated stalls and vendors quietly working on their craft. We were able to get a bowl of noodles here and try some dessert and it was all super yummy! Good place to try if you're in the area and looking for some quick eats. Note: Visited prior to Covid, so things may be different.

  • 5/5 Ro N. 1 year ago on Google
There are plenty of shops to explore. If you’re looking for souvenirs or interesting food experiences, this market is perfect. As with many touristy spots, it gets busy very quickly, especially on the weekends. Go before noon if you want to avoid crowds~

Such a phenomenal market! I really enjoyed coming here and walking around the market to try out all the cool snacks and deserts. Although prices are a bit higher than usual, its been a very good experience eating food here! It takes getting use to, to eat only in front of the restaurant, but it makes sense since you don't want accidents to happen when walking. Also, having a crowd In front of each restaurant helps people know where the good food is located! My highlights including trying out the octopus balls and the eel!

This is one of the coolest shopping and eating streets in Japan - it’s only a few blocks but filled with stalls (and some restaurants) selling all sorts of candies, sweets, goodies, fish, yakitori, grilled stuff and many others. Also intersects a couple of streets with fashion and Japanese specialties (knives etc.). Stalls close early though, most by 8 pm or so. Had wonderful BBQ seafood here.

  • 4/5 Sharjeel A. 1 year ago on Google
A bustling street (10 am to 6 pm) with a variety of food options, and sake options. My advice? Don't eat too much at one store. Rather, take one stick at a time and eat at as many places as you can. Everything tastes good and they're pretty darn cheap. Also, the famous Artisugu Knife shop is on this street as well. Worth checking it out.

  • 4/5 Daniela 1 year ago on Google
Very nice! I enjoyed a lot the experience. A lot of food stalls with local food, nice shop for special souvenir and a fantastic knife shop for real chef :) At the end of the market there’s a small temple to visit. Be prepared with cash. It is required. Several of those shops doe not accept payment with credit card! Suggested!

Loads of food variety and lively atmosphere. Well worth a visit but keep in mind that it's not open for dinner and it gets very busy. Also they do not like you eating whilst walking and some places have restrictions or charges to sit and eat.

Cool place! A lot of interesting food stalls and tiny souvenir shops. We bought some Hori jackets and A5 wagyu beef so we’re super satisfied. Be warned there’s A LOT of tourists here and little walking space.

Amazing market! It is crowded but even with the crowd it feels good to walk there. It is a paradise for food and drinks. You can find any object you can think of (except electronics). It is in fact a great place to find souvenirs (おみやげ)! You can explore the sideways and find tea shops, restaurants and small shrines, or walk the full length of the market and reach two temples at the end of the road.

Going here is one of our best experiences in Kyoto. Great food at great prices. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and were properly filled to our throat with tasty authentic Japanese food. Many shops close up by 6PM though so you better head there in early afternoon.

A paradise for foodies! Ever since around 1310, when the first store opened here, this location has grown into an unprecedented retail market for food and cooking-related products. Many shops have been run by the same family for generations. The Nishiki Market consists of a narrow, five-block shopping street with more than a hundred shops and restaurants, also known as "Kyoto's Kitchen". Nishiki Market has a pleasant but busy atmosphere that is inviting to those who want to explore the variety of culinary delights that Kyoto is famous for. In short, a paradise that no foodie should miss!

  • 5/5 J M. 8 months ago on Google
Nishiki - "Kitchen of Kyoto", great stop for foodies, we visited couple times during our time in Kyoto. You can find all sorts of Japanese food, snack, sake, souvenirs and accessories. Be there early if you can, as it is usually super busy between 12 to 17.

  • 4/5 EK L. 6 months ago on Google
Nice place to see the different products of Kyoto and the Kansai area. Rather crowded especially in the late morning heading all the way till when I left at about 1pm. The stuff is pricey. The guide shared how it has evolved from a local neighbourhood market into one for domestic tourists and now for international tourists. The pricing reflects that. Convenient though because it might take a while to find alternative places of what you might want. Perhaps good to take a look and decide what you want, then Google to see where else it might be available? Might be tough though as most local shops use mostlt Japanese.

  • 5/5 P W. 6 months ago on Google
Can't miss the market! This market is huge and will take some time and some walking to get through. The good thing is that there are a few cafes along the way to rest, get a snack, and use the restroom. There is plenty to see, eat, and buy. There are also places where the fish eat the dead skin from your feet (wow!), you can get a massage, and even sleep (there is a hotel!). The market is as clean as anywhere in Japan. There is no "central" parking lot. You'll have to find a small lot in the area, but there are plenty to be found. We paid 1,000 yen for a few hours, but that was the day cap. There are also hundreds of stores that line the main thoroughfare that you can visit. This is a shopping mecca. Highly recommended.

Quite a large market spread across few sheltered streets. One of the street sell snacks and seafood. Suggest to come empty stomach and try out the different snacks and seafood. Was quirr thee crowded on weekday. The rest of the street are mainly fashion shops and restaurants. These streets are wider and less crowded.

  • 5/5 Ishma D. 5 months ago on Google
Fun place to visit. There are multiple food joints and cute souvenirs shops. Local shops that have great tempura. Very few shops had vegetable tempuras. Must visit, the shops start closing at 5:30pm. So an afternoon stroll would be great.

A must visit when in Kyoto! Your senses will be explode visually and tastefully! Despite the crowds at certain times of the day I found it easy to navigate even at the busiest of times. Japan just do crowds right! Pleasant, courteous and accommodating! This market is a must do bucket list in Kyoto!

  • 5/5 Terry “Monochromist” C. 5 months ago on Google
Wide range of food, drinks and souvenirs selections especially the Snoopy store. If you are into sake and seafood/beef, this place is a MUST-GO for you for Kyoto. However the walkway is relatively small so compare to some other markets so be ready for a squeeze at times.
