(Translated by Google) The Castle of the Dukes, is to see and also to review. Access to the inner courtyard and the ramparts are free to access. It is already a beautiful visit. The castle museum tells the story of the city. Be careful, the museum is very busy in summer. The photos of the castle are not lacking but will you know how to go to the top of the stairs to admire the vault above the stairs. And will you be able to count the gargoyles that haunt its walls?

Located in the center of Nantes, the Castle 🏰 of the Dukes of Brittany is one of the most important monuments of the city's heritage. With almost half a mile (500 meters) of walls and the Flamboyant Gothic ducal residence within the walls, the castle forms an impressive ensemble. 😯👌🏻 I recommend to visit this incredible place 🙌🏻🤗

Excellent museum - couldn’t tell you the last time I spent 3 hours happily exploring a museum. Great exhibits, wonderful audio guide in English and really informative. Highly recommend!

Might be one of the best museums I have been to. This was my 1st stop with the 48 hour Nantes Pass and I was not disappointed! The Museum is set inside the Chateau with about 90% of the focus on the history of Nantes through the ages, with 10% on the caste scattered throughout. As one would expect, most of the text is in French, but they do offer audio guides from the front desk of which I was able to get an English version. The museum is organized into just over 30 rooms that have thematic groupings but each their own individual theme when you step into a room. The audio guide is very good at giving a brief overview and then there are selectable options if you want more detail on certain artifacts. The main highlight for me was the use of multimedia devices in a number of the exhibits which really took the museum experience to the next level. They have one unique feature that I've never seen before where you can pilot a virtual hot air balloon around the historic city circa 1750 and then set the balloon down in various areas and move around the digital rendition of the town.

Beautiful chateau right in the city centre. Worth the walk along the allowed areas. There is also a new slide that goes from top to bottom but unfortunately, we came on a really hot day and they do not operate it on severe weather.

Amazing free Chateau to visit in Nantes. The grounds are beautiful and there's a moat with koi, turtles, and ducks swimming. Inside there's a cafe, a museum(need to pay for this), and the ramparts(free). We walked the ramparts and took in some great views of the area. There are a few placards around with some information about the area and the Chateau as well.

After going to tons of history, art, and culture museums all throughput France, this has to be at the top. We went kind of late with only about an 1.5 hours left until close so we were only able to visit the museum and not the exhibition. There is free admission every first Sunday of the month. It was well worth the visit. The history of Nantes was very interesting and the displays were really captivating. The amount of stairs kind of hurt as it is basically the whole castle (very well preserved) but there were lots of elevators. You could also walk around the castle and within the courtyard for good views of the city from higher up.

Very interesting castle musée to visit. I'd recommend to spend at least 2 hours including the Genghis Khan exhibit. At the GK exhibition, you can borrow their English guide book in exchange for your ID. There are locker that's free and can easily fit a 45l backpack. I think there are bigger lockers too. You'll pick up a coin from near the reception and use it. Many of the exhibits have English but I'd estimate around 90% don't. Kinda hard for me whose French isn't up to date.

One of the best monuments that you can visit in Nante! Here you can do all sorts of things! You can visit the courtyard of the palace, you can walk around in the walls of the palace, you can visit the inside of the palace where you will find the history of the palace and the history of the city of Nantes, like the past of Nantes in slavery trading, the ww1 history, ww2 history, etc. It’s a must go if you never visited Nantes!

This impressive place had been neglected over too many years to become recently the museum of the history of Nantes. It's amazingly nicely done and you only realize the importance of the city when you visit this place and learn about it's past. Beautiful collection and, modern pedagogical display. Just fabulous 👍👍

A definite must see! This castle was renovated between 1990 and 2010 and therefore offers a fantastic experience of the castle. You will have plenty of videos to watch and many texts to read in order to better understand the past of this castle and the history of Nantes. At this time (05/2019) there is also an Exhibition of Rock in Nantes that on can find very interesting !

Amazing piece of history...well worth the trip. Very close to Nantes gare and city center. However English speakers may have a hard time to navigate as most is in French. Staff nice and accommodating. Overall, well structured and assembled. Wish I had more time to enjoy and spoke language.

A must visit in Nantes! My visit here was during an educational activity which was for a short duration in the premises. Got a glance of the Genghis Khan's exhibit at the museum. A revisit is required in order to explore all the museums and programmes here.

A beautiful escape to be found in the heart of Nantes. While the old quarter of the city suits just metres away, and offers some beautiful sites and destinations, the château is an excellent place to visit to escape some of the bustle. Check out the tours for a taste of local history, or simply washer at your own pace and enjoy some lovely views over Nantes.

We loved the chateau. It has a great mix of Nantes history and the details about the chateau and royalty. 10€ to enter with an audio tour and had a great afternoon. The next day we toured around the outside for free. It is open as a public park and it is just beautiful. Walking around the moat was really cool too.

A lovely building which has been made into a museum about the area. Liked the different areas which took you through time with the Ducs of Bretagne and Anne of Bretagne all the way through to modern times. Learnt a lot about Nantes and how the river brought fortune and then almost famine as ports nearer the cost and the introduction of the railway meant as a port it received less goods. Was amazed that Nantes was heavily involved with the European slave trade and was pro republic for the civil war. Children are free You can spend time looking at everything or they have guides if you want a certain theme.

We wandered in off the street and enjoyed the free areas of the chateau. The buildings were really impressive with some multi-lingual information boards. Going up on the ramparts was fun and gave some good views of the city. Probably difficult if you have limited mobility, but we didn't inquire into any help that was available or go into the ticketed areas. There are birds and fish to see in the moat, and pet sheep in the grounds.

Amazing museum. The external part, including the remparts, are open to the public at no cost. Inside, there is a nice 3d-virtual reality reconstruction of old parts of the town. Really a great piece of historical research done! Totally recommended.

Very interesting, beautiful, and well preserved castle in the centre of Nantes. Plenty of possibilities to walk around before actually having to pay entry to the interior rooms. Nice view on the surrounding area.

It was the weekend of march 2023, the sky was lovely. I booked the ticket day for student, so the price for visiting the monument is so cheap. You should change the ticket before come inside the Castle of Ducs. It so big and large, we spent about 2,5 hours to all exploring. There is a map in the reception and the locking to put the bag and the coats 🧥. You can read the history of Nantes and also watch the short video in the museum. Outside the castle 🏰, there is the place to see the city center. Near by the Gare center. Highly recommended for your trip in Nantes.

The design of the castle looks very unique, and although I didn't spend much time in it, yet I noticed and liked few stuff. I liked that it's surrounded by water where ducks swim and play around, which is a nice scenery, and moreover the grass down there is very beautiful where people sit and enjoy their time, quite unique. I recommend any group of people passing by to go there and spend some time around it.

Lots of good information about Brittany in multiple mediums (artifacts, text, interactive and passive screens). One interactive screen was particularly interesting: a layout and history of the chateau over several centuries. It allows you to compare different centuries. I really wish there had been multiple screens available because while we were reviewing it in English, several people passed by and didn't want to wait for us to finish. Quite awkward...

I'm probably biased but this might be one of the best castles I know. I've been there a hundred times and have never been deceived, it really is beautiful. Besides, the view from the ramparts is incredible AND free, you can go in there without paying. Inside the castle, there are a lot of activities and events that make it lively - once I've even been dragged into a room to test perfumes (that was fun). They really try to reinvent this beautiful place and it works, makes me want to go there all the time - I recommand! And besides, it's an account of Nantes and Brittany's great history, it really represents the whole country.

Walk in for free and stroll the grounds or up on the battlements to get a great view out over Nantes. Have a seat or relax on the lawn of the lower section near the moat and take the load off your feet from walking round the City. Pay to go in the museum, it's a very historical place worth getting to learn.

Amazing castle with a really good museum to look around. It is really big though so can take a good few hours to go round if you want to see everything. It's really interesting so I would recommend it

Not very impressive. The interior of the chateau is a museum and the view from the remparts is good. The chateau is not laid out as residence. Rather dusappointing.

A must-see in Nantes! Beautiful castle with a museum inside. The museum is focused on Nantes history, it's very well done & full of interactive media! You need at least 3 hours to get through the main exhibition. I recommend bringing wired head phones for the audio guide.

Brilliant restoration work underway on the chateau and we’ll worth the visit, especially the ramparts . Tragically the nearby cathedral was gutted by an arsonist’s fire a couple of years ago and has not been reopened but there are other churches for those who ABC; another beautiful church.
