The Serpent d'Océan is an extraordinary metal sculpture located on the Saint-Brevin-les-Pins beach, a small French town located at the edge of the Loire estuary which connects to the Atlantic Ocean. This permanent installation represents the skeleton of a huge prehistoric snake that is somewhat playful with the tides. This impressive ocean snake is the work of Chinese artist Huang Yong Ping, created for the Voyage à Nantes Festival for the Estuaire 2012 contemporary art exhibition. The artist’s message is often that of the duality of destructive impulse and creative talent. This animal is linked to Chinese mythology and delivers a message in support of environmental protection. The 130 meter long skeleton is made entirely of aluminum and terrifyingly seems to emerge from the seabed. The sinuous movement of its vertebrae creates the illusion of a living creature, as if it wanted to rise from the ocean's waters to appear or disappear at the rhythms of the tide.

Definitely worth a visit at low tide. It's easy to find if you are coming over the St. Nazaire bridge. Get off at the first junction on the south side of the bridge and then follow your nose to the water's edge. There's a car park (and some, hard to spot toilets). Follow the path by the water's edge.

If you are a photographer and can choose any day of the year to visit then try for a date that has sunset around high tide and shoot between the hour before and the hour after, there are many angles all around the beach, on the sea wall and a look out platform accessed by some steps at either end of the Serpent section of beach. Once the head is visible and accessible understandably the world and their partners will be in selfie heaven. As an art instalation I liked it a lot. There is a caravan park (Camping Mindin) that we stayed in which has a key code gate directly onto the beach promenade very handy. The site is set in a wooded glade and was very pleasant. As a beach holiday you are on an estuary but it is sand though small with a lot of the section being underwater at high tide, if you want a larger sandy experience walk with the sea on your right and you will come to a large sandy bay with a controlled swimming area. I liked the place.

I had seen pictures of this sculpture, but did not realise just how big the sculpture is! Make sure that you time your visit well as the sculpture may be partially or totally submerged if the tide is rising in the estuary! You can get up close to the sculpture on the beach - taking lots of photos from different angles. There is parking nearby and a walking trail along the coastline.

We stopped here on route to our campsite. Views of St. Nazaire Bridge are fantastic. The snake sculpture was fine but maybe I do not appreciate modern art

Magnificent sculpture opposite the shipyards at Saint Nazaire, Interesting at anytime of the day, I had the opportunity to see it at high tide in daylight, but I much preferred at low tide at sunset (see photos)
