Marseille History Museum is located near the old port and the museum is focus on the fascinating history of the Marseilles region from the BC to the contemporary. The exhibitions are very well organized chronologically with a wide range of artifacts, including pieces of several ancient wooden boats that have been recovered in the area. The museum places used to be the dock and the port spot in the Roman times. The City of Marseille did a great job to discover and dig out all the ancient stuff, there are so many. It is amazing tour in the exhibitions. Great way to learn the history in Marseille. Strongly recommended.

A museum showcasing the history of Marseille dating back to 26 centuries ago. There were a lot of amazing archeological finds; some notable ones were the Roman ship wreck and tomb/burial site. Entry and audio guide were free.

Duration/Time: 60 - 90 Minutes The museum can be comfortably explored within approximately one hour. Positive Aspects: It was a free museum and exceeded our expectations. The staff members were kind and friendly. We were impressed by the overall collection, which was better than expected. Negative Aspects: The staff members had limited English skills, which posed some communication challenges.

Free museum to permanent expo to learn about the history of Marseille, the first city of France that go back to ancient Greek times! I particularly love the history behind how the site was discovered while some large building complex were planned to be built and they were able to conserve part of the area and turned it into a museum for everyone.

In the heart of Marseilles, at literally attached to a shopping center (Centre Bourse) this city history museum is informative, entertaining, and free! It is organized in a linear chronological order from the founding by Greek colonist in 600 BCE and onward into the 20th century, exhibiting maps, models and artifacts. If you are interested in history and/or just like to learn more about the city itself, this museum is a worthwhile visit...the price is right ($0) and if you want to leave there is a shopping mall steps away.

As a museum, it’s great. I’d never before notice comments about the extraordinary rudeness of staff before, as I did when I read up on this place. Well, on my visit I was forced to witness a large anger miserable Karen type berating an older gentleman. He stayed mild, acknowledged he understood the rules in question. Eventually he said enough already, calmly. There are rules yes, their are also manners. This museum seems to have only one of these things for their staff. The guard was clearly a miserable individual, bent on victory and humiliation of the visitor. It spoiled my visit to witness this. Disgraceful.

Huge Museum with a great and collectiom from ancient times until now. The objects are presented in a fine way and accompanied by historical maps and explanations. Most is also in English, some even in Italian and German. And in the garden there are the ruins of the old Greek and Roman port, gate,....

Amazing experience. Marseille is one of the oldest cities in the Mediterranean and the museum walks you through that rich and colourful past, from the Greek traders in 600BC to date. Great audio guides (we used the English language ones). Our one visit of about 2 hours was definitely not long enough to do it justice. Would recommend 2 separate visits if you can.

The good part? The museum was free. The bad part? The staff was a hit and miss experience with some very dedicated people and others behaving like you're visiting their living room. As a tourist there to learn, it wasn't very easy to engage with the non English speaking staff or be informed about the pieces as none of the information was provided in anything else than french. I feel like that's a big miss, and an easily fixed one with little effort and money.

This Museum is great! There are so many vestiges of the early period of Marseille history. You can see pottery, and tombs from it's earliest days. I was fascinated by the earliest burial practices and especially the sarcophagi there. There are also materials for more modern periods as well as stories about important Kings and generals (Napoleon) who also lived here.

Okay I heard positive comments on this. I went and it's €6.00 euro with free audio in English. It's not user friendly. Also it would be a higher rating if there were internation language signage present. It would be better if employees were bilingual. A lot of neat exhabits, but poor descriptions and guide does not give great details. Recommend for a rainy day.

Quite a thorough walk through of the history of this incredible city which helps decipher and understand why Marseille is so special. They don’t have audio guides because of COVID but they do have a journal which guides you through the museum and gives a lot of additional information, ask for it at the ticket desk. It’s only €1 and I wouldn’t have appreciable the museum as much without it. Free entry during the summer of 2020. It was quite empty so I had the luxury of being alone most of the time.

Wonderful museum! I didn't find the entrance at first and it's a bit unusual for me that it's integrated into the mall. Nevertheless a great experience. I really liked how they preserved the old port which one can see from nearly every place inside the museum. The audio guide is good as well, but I think all the information provided in the museum is a lot. So plan in a bit of time for a visit!

(Translated by Google) Good way to get into the history of the city and have a quick rundown. From the Greek foundation to today's multiculturalism. The museum boasts some beautiful pieces especially from the Greek and Roman times. The finds related to the burials are interesting and the models and reproductions are useful to understand how and in what way it developed around the access to the sea. In summer it is free. It would also be very interactive with many touch displays which, unfortunately, for hygienic reasons related to Covid, were off.

It is a fascinating museum of history in the city, erected following archeological excavations made on the site, which it stands, in the 1960s, for the construction of the Center de la Bourse shopping center. The museum presents the history of Marseille from ancient times to the 18th century. Among other things, you can see the 2nd century AD ship museum, which is considered one of the world's best-kept ships of that era. Apart from the ship, you can see in the museum a variety of Greek ceramics, spectacular mosaics and various architectural works. Admission is reasonable. Admission is free for those aged 17 and under. Opening hours: Tuesdays to Sundays from 10am to 6pm. How long should you visit? Between one and two hours.

I visited the Marseille History museum with my wife on our last day in the city. It was a good opportunity to hear a little more about the history of the city dating back 26 centuries. It was helpful to have the audio guides available in Italian and English to provide you guides during different parts of the museum. It was interesting to see how the discovery of the old Roman port was made during the building of the central shopping center. There were several boats unearthed during this time that are on display in the museum.

(Translated by Google) The great museum of the city of Marseille is located in the last place on the planet where we would think of going for a cultural itinerary: a shopping center. It occupies the basement of the La Bourse shopping center in Marseille, exactly where the wrecks of Roman ships with their cargo of goods and history came to light. The museum covers the history of Marseille from antiquity to the present day, from the Greek age, then the Roman age, to the Middle Ages and to follow. The most accurate and interesting part is, from my point of view, the archaeological section, with the splendid relics of the Greek and Roman era found in the excavations of urban archeology in Marseille which are the real protagonists of the exhibition, as well as unique finds of their kind .
