Place du Vieux Marche, or the Old Marketplace square is a historic square in Rouen center. The square is very picturesque with old half timber houses and many artisan shops, cafes and restaurants around. Also, there's a small marketplace with fish, meats, cheese,...etc stalls and a convenient parking lot right beneath it. However, what spoils the whole sight and impression is the ultra modern Joan the Arc Church (read that review).

This square is very historic place. Jean d'arc was executed in this square. A bit later she was canonized by the Pope. Where she was executed they opened a new Church. St. Joan of Arc, by name the Maid of Orléans, French Sainte Jeanne d’Arc or La Pucelle d’Orléans, (born c. 1412, Domrémy, France—died May 30, 1431, Rouen; canonized May 16, 1920; feast day May 30; French national holiday, second Sunday in May), national heroine of France a peasant girl who, believing that she was acting under divine guidance, led the French army in a momentous victory at Orleans that repulsed an English attempt to conquer France during the Hundred wars. Captured a year afterward, Joan was burned to death by the English and their French collaborators as a heretic. She became the greatest national heroine of her compatriots, and her achievement was a decisive factor in the later awakening of French national.

The Place du Vieux-Marché is in the heart of Rouen and holds a significant place in history as the site where Joan of Arc, the legendary French heroine, was executed. There are many shops, cafes and restaurants where you can grab a coffee or something to eat. The pretty cobblestone streets and medieval architecture create an atmosphere that seems to take you back to the 15th century.

A stunning place to visit. A handy underground car park brings you up next to the cafes and then it is a picturesque and interesting walk all through the square, into the shopping area and through to the cathedral. Lots of cafes, bars and bistros to relax and take refreshments.

Such a beautiful place! Unique buildings and nice restaurants! Even some vegan places! Sadly one was really expensive and for the other you need a visa to pay.

Love the quaint buildings and friendly Cafe owners. You will see the place where Joan of arc was executed. Be sure to visit the Joan of arc museum and go inside the churches.

This area has the most beautiful modern church dedicated to Joan of Arc. It is where she was executed sadly. The church and market (fresh fish, cheeses and fruit) share an undulating roof.

The square where Joan of Arc was burnt, the place is marked by a cross, next to the foundation walls of an old church and behind a modern church which takes up most of the square now.

What a beautiful gem of a place! We went on a Sunday got a parking easily (it can be very tough especially on street parking). Theres a big beautiful church in the middle. There is also a very nice indoor stall market (it is covered) which was great as it started raining once we got there. The market has a little bit of everything from fruits to spices and fresh meat. There was also a couple of fresh flowers stalls! It was very nice to walk around!

I was pleasantly surprised to visit this unique area. The architecture is so beautiful and the place is so chilled out. There are some really beautiful alleys and buildings which will keep you interested. The city also boast of a good shopping area, Christmas market there is also quite nice, however I only heard of the party life there but dint really feel the city has many happening surroundings.

The first place we stopped by was the covered, open air market in the center of the area. There were plenty of different local produce including fruits, cheese and meats. It was a nice place for a quick wander. The building surround the area was quite interesting and had really intricate designs. Most of them look really old but really interesting since they had lights out front. There was also a ferris wheel in the area but it wasn't on. The middle area contained a small garden and an interesting looking building, Joan of Arc Church. It was quite nice walking around the area and taking in the historical atmosphere.

Rouen is a city with a history that goes back too far to discuss. One of the original cities. The sites are eclectic. From the death of Joan of Arc to the Musee des Beaux Arts. The clock and the ancient market. Rouen welcomes us all back to share the sites and the history.

Beautiful square with lots of restaurants and a souvenir shop. You can also find the place where Joan of Arc was burned, a church dedicated to her and the remaining of the church that once stood here

Located in the heart of Rouen, France, the Place du Vieux-Marché holds a significant place in history as the site where Joan of Arc, the legendary French heroine, was executed. Steeped in both tragedy and triumph, this historical square is an essential destination for those seeking to understand and revere the courageous spirit of Joan of Arc. Walking through the square, one cannot help but feel a profound sense of somberness and respect. The cobblestone streets and medieval architecture create an atmosphere that seems to transport visitors back to the darkest days of the 15th century. Plaques and sculptures commemorate the martyrdom of Joan of Arc, reminding us of her unwavering conviction and her ultimate sacrifice.

Never saw a church like this before, the architecture is so clever and unusual, shaped like an arc, Joan of Arc. Don't miss this.

At the end of October, almost the last day this treasure is open for the season...flowers in bloom, the lily reflecting ponds absolutely stunning, an emotional visit to the home and landscaping of Claude Monet. I will treasure these memories forever.

Great selection of independent shops in amongst the bigger branded shops. The clock tower is marvellous.

It's a bit hard to review the town square, when we arrived it was packed with people watching a band perform, then there was a procession of military chaps and later some giant models of people came dancing through. We had stumbled across a festival day and it was excellent. Apart from that, the centre of Rouen is beautiful.

This is supposedly the spot where Joan of Arc was burned. The square is surrounded by numerous half-timbered houses. In the square you can see the foundations of a medieval church that was destroyed in the 18th century. There's also a market hall and the Joan of Arc church, both with slate roof. The church has a striking appearance. There are a couple of good restaurants.

Large, slightly empty square with a few nice buildings (mostly restaurants) and an interesting, modern church. Worth a look but not a highlight of Rouen.

Rouen is a quaint old city worth a visit. Old wooden built houses are interesting. Lots of cobbles but walking isn't too difficult. Interesting shops. The big clock is also interesting.

This is a beautiful area. The Joan of Arc church is here, she was burnt at the stake here also

I liked the modern architectural design of the church, and the more inclusive feeling provided by the single level of the floor sloping gently up at an edge to aid viewing position.
